Amid a broad reshuffle of its programming lineup, MSNBC is initiating “mass layoffs” of 99 employees who are members of the WGA East, the union said Tuesday.
Over the past two days, according to WGA East, “we learned that MSNBC is starting mass layoffs of 99 of our union colleagues from at least nine different shows. This devastating news comes after the slow, painful trickle of announcements regarding a near-total overhaul of the network’s broadcast lineup.”
Among other changes, Comcast-owned MSNBC is removing Joy Reid and Alex Wagner from its primetime lineup. Meanwhile, Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary who joined MSNBC in 2023, is moving into the network’s 9 p.m. slot between Tuesday and Friday.

The Writers Guild of America East responded to what it called “mass layoffs” at MSNBC Tuesday, slamming the “devastating” move at the liberal news network as an irresponsible decision while democracy is “under attack” by the Trump Administration.
“News of layoffs comes against the backdrop of the President of the United States making direct threats against MSNBC, among other news outlets, and at a time when it has never been more crucial to have a fully staffed newsroom to cover a democracy under attack,” a statement from the union obtained by TheWrap said.
The union said that layoffs of 99 staffers across nine different shows began rolling out this week — as seen in part by the Monday shuttering of such programs as “TheReidOut” with Joy Reid and “The Katie Phang Show” with Katie Phang. Anchor Alex Wagner was also replaced during the 9 p.m. spot Tuesday-Friday, though will remain with the network as a correspondent.

Jen Psaki, the former Biden White House press secretary who has become a favorite at MSNBC since joining in 2023, will get even more screen time in front of viewers in April when she takes over the network’s 9 p.m. slot between Tuesday and Friday.
The move is the latest to be unveiled from MSNBC under new leader Rebecca Kutler, who has wasted little time in tearing up the network’s schedule as it faces seismic pressures. MSNBC is grappling not only with the new Trump administration, to which many of its progressive anchors and analysts are directly opposed, but it also faces a big change in its business operations once it is, along with a group of other cable networks, spun off from Comcast in a transaction slated to be completed later this year.

MSNBC’s new chief isn’t wasting any time in figuring out where she wants to take the progressive-leaning network as it prepares to be spun off from NBCUniversal and its corporate parent, Comcast.
Rebecca Kutler, who was named president of MSNBC earlier in February, is considering expanding the on-screen presence of Jen Psaki, who currently anchors hours on Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings, as well as the trio of personalities who lead “The Weekend,” the roundtable show that airs Saturday and Sunday mornings and is led by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
MSNBC declined to make Kutler available for comment. Puck previously reported discussions around the aforementioned personnel moves.

Former White House press secretary-turned-MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki torched Fox News and Rupert Murdoch after the announcement of his departure from the company on Thursday.
In announcing the exit, Murdoch appointed his son Lachlan in his place as chairman of Fox and News Corp. After decades of relentlessly building a massive media empire, however, Murdoch’s exit didn’t leave Psaki with high hopes for the future of Fox News without him.

Rep. Adam Schiff told MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki that the $40 million super spending at work in Donald Trump’s 2024 Presidential campaign is part of the former President’s strategy to “keep out of jail.”
While speaking on Sunday’s installment of “Inside With Jen Psaki,” the MSNBC host asked the California representative what he made of the “eye-popping” figure dropped in a recent article from The Washington Post, which reported that $40 million from PACs supporting Trump’s campaign has been spent on legal costs this year alone.
“It is eye-popping but it also shows, I think, by one powerful metric how much Donald Trump’s running for presidency is part of his strategy to keep out of jail,” Schiff told Psaki.
“This is all about the hope that he becomes the next office holder and he can make all these legal problems go away as the next president,” he continued.

News media figures from the left and right clashed this week when Megyn Kelly took MSNBC’s Jen Psaki to task, saying that the former Biden press secretary’s Sunday program is “failing” because of “drivel” like she saw on this week’s episode.
The segment in question? Psaki had a standalone report Sunday on “the reemergence of a very old GOP playbook” of pitting different groups of Americans against each another for the party’s political gain. The latest example, Psaki said, was what she saw as the right’s pitting of Muslim Americans against trans people.
“It gets covered by MSNBC as ‘the white man is evil and manipulative,'” Kelly said in response on Monday.
In her “Inside” report, Psaki broke down over a five-minute segment the GOP’s history, dating back to President Richard Nixon, of “pitting one group of Americans against another,” which under Nixon...

Jen Paski took aim at Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott and more Republican lawmakers on Sunday night after the Texas politicians once again offered thoughts and prayers, but no gun reform ideas, to victims of the latest mass shooting at an Allen, Texas, shopping mall.
During the latest episode of “Inside With Jen Psaki” on MSNBC, the former White House press secretary honed in on the idea of politicizing tragedy. But, she noted that those who criticize people for politicizing tragedy — which has included Cruz, Abbott and their Republican colleagues just about every time — are the ones who are actually doing so.
In light of the most recent mass shooting in Texas, Psaki first pulled up a clip of Abbott speaking to an NRA convention held in Texas last year, not long after the horrific shooting in Uvalde that killed 19 children and two adults.

On Sunday’s “Inside With Jen Psaki,” MSNBC host and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki took a moment to reflect on the week over at Fox News — particularly in its surprising and unceremonious firing of Tucker Carlson.
But while there continues to be speculation over what Rupert Murdoch’s decision came down to, it’s clear that Carlson’s absence hasn’t changed much of the problematic sentiment espoused on the network daily. Psaki argued that “explicit white nationalist views were never the total problem for the network” and that under Carlson, they even “endorsed all of that.” Now instead, hosts like Laura Ingraham are continuing to push that messaging.

Jen Psaki spotlighted Sunday the changing talking points, and even hypocrisies, of several Donald Trump-supporting, Maga Republicans when it comes to defunding the police.
The five-minute “Inside With Jen Psaki” segment breaks down how, despite many elected officials rallying around “backing the blue” and heralding “law and order” in the 2020 aftershocks of George Floyd’s murder, the likes of House representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Jim Jordan — and even Florida Gov. Harris Faulkner and her Fox News colleagues have long been stoking the flames of the “cancel culture” wars. But the host of “The Faulkner Focus” had an interesting proposal Monday to have two non-Fox media figures work out the truth of “woke” and its political impact on the debate stage in 2024: the respective hosts of HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” and MSNBC’s “Inside With Jen Psaki.”
“You know what political debate I wanna see in the season of 2024? Jen Psaki and Bill Maher,” Faulkner said, speaking Monday with radio host Jason Rantz. “She hates the woke, and he does too! But she hates it ’cause they can’t fight it, and he hates it ’cause it’s gonna make them lose.”
