Good chemistry between the leads, but the comedy is more on the nascent, cheesy side.

Scotoe is a new action comedy directed by Jamel Aattache, the director of Tatta's films. Actors Mohammed Chaara and Sinan Eroglu also step in as directors in addition to both playing the leading roles in this film.

Street wise detectives Sino (Sinan Eroglu) and Mo (Mohamed Chaara) grew up together in the same neighborhood in Amsterdam, so they got to know the dark, criminal world.

They both learn about a major cocaine smuggling operation, but their own Turkish and Moroccan working methods take them off the case. So they now have to continue with the case without their boss finding out to save their careers.

In addition to playing the leading roles themselves and assisting as directors, Mohammed Chaara and Sinan Eroglu also largely wrote the story of this film. They know how to insert their own comedy moments into the film. For both of them this was their first writing and directing work. They were somewhat guided by the third director and writer, but otherwise tried to keep the film more in their own style. Because of all this collaboration in and behind the film, the two characters have good chemistry together.

Due to the more novice and somewhat inexperienced sides of the two, the film is quickly reminiscent of other buddy cop films such as Bad Boys or Rush Hour, only in a different guise. The comedy can thus remain on a familiar, cheesy side, but with its own touch of humor.

    Want more

This was a time such a recognisable movie, as the actors launched lines and expressions that Dutch people will recognise, particularly as street language.

This movie does remind one of many American police movies, but it has it's own Dutch aspects. We also have to acknowledge that it's not on the level of such other movies, mainly because the Dutch industry is much, much smaller.

The storyline if you boil it down is like any other run of the mill police movie. I would have liked a twist that would be particular to Dutch culture. It should be possible, with our down to eartch and black humour. That's why I am saying.... want more.

A heartwarming comedy about friendship and cultural identity

This film feels like an episode from an amazing TV series, packed with humor and cultural references that leave you smiling. It tells the story of two migrant children-one from Turkey and the other from Morocco-who have grown up to become police officers in the Netherlands. While navigating Dutch work culture, they also strive to stay true to their roots.

What makes this film truly special is its ability to balance lighthearted comedy with relatable themes. It's not a deep or action-packed story, but rather a heartfelt exploration of friendship and identity. The interactions between the main characters, their families, and their colleagues feel genuine and real. Despite differing opinions and personal struggles from those around them, the two friends stand by each other through thick and thin.

This is the perfect movie to watch with family. The subtle humor, the thoughtful portrayal of cultural differences, and the strong chemistry between the lead actors create a unique viewing experience. It feels like a pilot for a TV series-introducing characters you'd love to see more of in future episodes. If you enjoy a blend of comedy, humanity, and cultural insight, this film is a must-watch!
