10 Things You Didn't Know About Undead Unluck
Image
Cbr Anime Week is brought to you by Hulu Animayhem

Undead Unluck first debuted in the Fall 2023 anime season. Based on author Yoshifumi Tozuka's ongoing shonen manga of the same name, Undead Unluck is a wacky action story about Negators, or people born with the supernatural ability to negate certain rules of the universe. Such people are in direct defiance of God's laws, making Negators His enemy. This includes the two protagonists, Fuuko Izumo and an immortal man nicknamed Andy.

Undead Unluck 's story is intensely personal at the start, with Fuuko wishing to end her own life due to her Unluck's negative effects on her life, while Andy wishes to use her powers so he can finally pass on after so many years alive. Before long, though, the plot, setting, and combat system of Undead Unluck are greatly expanded upon, leaving readers/viewers in store for a few surprises.

Kentaro Miura’s Passing Didn’t Prevent Berserk from Beating Demon Slayer and One Piece for Top Spot in Highest Selling Manga List
Image
If you were told to guess the highest-selling manga in America in Fall 2023, your answer would most likely be One Piece, Blue Lock, and Jujutsu Kaisen. However, the manga franchise that took the #1 spot in America surprised everyone, and it was none other than Kentaro Miura’s magnum opus Berserk, which outsold Demon Slayer and grabbed the first spot.

Guts in Berserk manga

Although Kentaro Miura is no longer here to guide his beloved story to success, his successor, Kouji Mori, and Studio Gaga paid their respects to him by taking his beloved series to the top of the charts for Fall 2023, beating many prominent names.

The 10 Best-Dressed Stars at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards
Image
Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar is no stranger to events both starry and stylish, and on Sunday, Jan. 14, the 2024 Critics Choice Awards joined that list, offering up a plethora of high fashion amid the trophies determined by the voting body consisting of digital, print and broadcast journalists.

A variety of fashion trends carried over from the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, notably in the crimson-hued dresses worn by Dua Lipa, Abby Elliott and others. Rose details, seen on the custom Balmain gown worn by Margot Robbie, as well as with the rosettes that cascaded down the shoulder of Emily Blunt’s Giorgio Armani Privé gown were also notable. New trends that emerged at the 29th Critics Choice Awards included black as the dominant color in gowns, such as Angela Bassett’s Pamella Roland design or best actress winner Emma Stone’s custom Louis Vuitton. But voluminous white looks also ruled the carpet,...

Fall 2023’s Most Bingeable And Skippable Romance Anime
Image
Quick Links What To Skip What To Watch

The fall anime 2023 was the year’s most highly anticipated season. The fandom was treated to non-stop quality animation, especially with some of the biggest shows returning with essential seasons. Mega-hits like Jujutsu Kaisen, Dr. Stone New World, Spy x Family, Attack on Titan, and more made their smashing entrance into the season with some of the best arcs the fans had all year. While it is obvious that the spotlight belongs to big names, there were several low-key anime shows from different genres that wowed the fans equally. As usual, the romance genre remained dominant in the best fall anime race next to key shonen titles, giving the audience something wholesome and genuine to look forward to.

Since it’s the innate quality of the romance genre to embrace almost all other sub-genres, fall 2023’s romance lineup offered the fans a little bit of everything.

How Are Fuuko's Powers Different In Undead Unluck?
Image
The following contains minor spoilers for the Undead Unluck manga.

Undead Unluck's comedic and unpredictable fight scenes, thanks to Fuuko's unpredictable unluck, set it apart from more straightforward and basic shonen series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Yu Yu Hakusho. Undead Unluck joins the trend of anime subversion alongside titles like Chainsaw Man, Zom 100, and Oshi no Ko. Fuuko's unluck ability contrasts with the more straightforward powers of other Undead Unluck characters like Andy, highlighting Fuuko as a unique and subversive shonen hero.

The Fall 2023 anime season has introduced a variety of exciting new shows, including the shonen action/comedy series Undead Unluck. It may be a good action series like Spy x Family, but those two series have very different combat systems where rules mean different things. Spy x Family is funny because of its slice-of-life, character-driven antics, while Undead Unluck is funny because of its characters' rule-breaking Negator abilities.

Image
Shangri-La Frontier is one of the newest anime to air in Fall 2023 on Crunchyroll, and it’s already off to an amazing start. The anime stars Rakuro Hizutome, a boy who makes a hobby out of playing notoriously terrible Vrmmo games so he can master them despite their various flaws and glitches. One day, Rakuro decides to play an actual good game for the first time in ages, the world-renowned Shangri-La Frontier, and through the avatar Sunraku, he finds himself ecstatic over getting to play a game without any flaws, especially since his experience with “trash games” allows him to play on a different level than the average player.

There’s only one episode of Shangri-La Frontier out so far, but just from that, it’s shaping up to be a great addition to the Fall 2023 lineup. The basic premise of a Vrmmo game might not be that unique after all this time,...

The Holdovers Review: Giamatti & Newcomer Dominic Sessa Are Alive With Chemistry
Image
Alexander Payne's The Holdovers is a highly anticipated film of Fall 2023, showcasing his ability to bring levity to a teenager's implosion. The film's setting in Barton Academy, with pompous teachers and arrogant kids, sets the stage for an unlikely bond between student Angus Tully and his chaperon, Professor Paul Hunham. While The Holdovers may not excel in any particular category, Payne's direction, the 1970s setting, and the performances, especially by newcomer Dominic Sessa, make it an enjoyable and well-made film.

Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers is one of his most likable films to date, and one of the most highly anticipated films of Fall 2023. Payne routinely writes his own films, but as with Nebraska, The Holdovers is not written by the auteur. Payne was approached to direct a pilot about a similar subject matter in the past and declined, but did stay in touch with The Holdovers screenwriter,...

CBS Fall 2023 Primetime Lineup to Include ‘Yellowstone’ and Reality Programming
Image
The cast of ‘Yellowstone’

CBS’s 2023 fall primetime lineup will look vastly different from previous years. Due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production has been shut down on scripted series and films. Given the lack of new episodes of its normal nighttime shows, CBS is diving into programs that have aired on Paramount+. Plus, the network’s leaning heavily on unscripted series and game shows.

Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner, Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes will make its debut on broadcast television this fall. Season one will air on Sundays on CBS, five years after premiering in June 2018 on Paramount Network.

Paramount+’s Seal Team season five will run on CBS on Thursdays, and FBI True makes the move from Paramount+ to CBS on Tuesdays this fall. And the original U.K. Ghosts, which inspired the American version, will take up a spot on CBS’s lineup on Thursdays.
