April showers… don’t matter if you’re sat inside watching TV. The Disney Bundle™ ensures that this is possible in perpetuity, with the entire libraries of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN available in whichever permutation serves your lifestyle.
This spring, Disney+ continues the rollout of “Daredevil: Born Again” and soon welcomes the return of “Andor” Season 2 (and achieving the rare astrological phase in which both Marvel and Star Wars are active on the streamer). Plenty of shows and movies will also join the Hulu library; the Emmy-winning original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns after a three-year hiatus with its sixth and final season, and FX will premiere the limited series “Dying for Sex” starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate (based on the podcast from Molly Kochan and Nikki Boyer).
Top Pick: “Andor” Season 2

A film ripe with delightful mischief, writer/director Leo McGuigan’s The Invention explores a deeply personal yet universally resonant story depicting a young boy’s rite of passage. Drawing inspiration from stories passed down by his father, McGuigan crafts a charming narrative set in 1960s Belfast. At the centre of it all is Frankie, a boy who, perhaps wiser than his years, reappropriates his mother’s knitting needles for a childhood caper. What begins innocently quickly reveals itself to be something far more complex as Frankie is thrust into the murky waters of moral ambiguity, family secrets, and the stark realities that adulthood will one day bring. McGuigan wanted the film to be filled with a sense of nostalgia while never shying away from the harsh truths and remaining grounded in realism. Through Frankie’s unflinching gaze, we see a world where uncorrupted youth collides with the inescapable weight of a secret.

The Overlook Film Festival returns to “America’s most haunted city” from April 3 to 6. A cat on its ninth life, the annual event in New Orleans was founded almost a decade ago to celebrate scary movies and immersive horror experiences. This year, the festival lineup emphasizes tradition — honoring Shudder’s 10th birthday at its opening night party, programming a retro series with “Ash” director Flying Lotus, offering a conversation with genre literary legend Joe Hill, and more.
“I feel like we are standing at the crossroads of horror history,” said Michael Lerman, co-founder and director of film programming. “This year really showcases the old and new guard coming together. We have astounding debuts from exciting newcomers. We have veteran masters that keep reinventing themselves with new work. And we’re just getting started so stay tuned for more.”

There are plenty of haunted houses — and hotels and summer camps — in horror movies, but some of the most disturbing cinematic scares are thanks to evil objects. Like the eponymous toy in Oz Perkins’ new movie “The Monkey,” his follow-up to last year’s “Longlegs.”
While some things are obviously not going to be good news, like the hand of a dead man, any inanimate object can be cursed, whether it’s a TV, video tape, or mirror.
Here are more cursed object movies in horror movies we’ll never forget.

The president of NYU’s College Republicans of America organization has been forced to resign following her “controversial” comments about President Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump.
Kaya Walker’s resignation was posted on X on Feb. 18, a day less than a week after an article about Barron’s life at NYU was published in Vanity Fair.
In the article, Walker told the outlet about Barron, “He’s sort of like an oddity on campus…he goes to class, he goes home.”
Walker’s resignation letter emphasized that her quotes were, “ridiculously misconstrued to suggest that I found Barron Trump’s commuter status to be unusual when in reality the majority of NYU’s body – including myself – are commuters.”
Walker further stressed that in her complete statement to Vanity Fair, she had clarified her “disappointment in the spectacle that the media and individuals on campus have created through the online circulation of gossip,...

Adam Scott had a bad feeling about Severance, and not just because of its eerie premise. Before stepping into the unsettling world of Lumon Industries, he read the script and felt an immediate sense of dread.
Something about it felt too real, like a warning rather than fiction. Thankfully, that nightmare scenario never materialized, but the psychological thriller still rattled audiences with its mind-bending take on work-life balance.

Severance star Adam Scott is set to lead the upcoming supernatural horror movie Hokum. Damian McCarthy, who helmed the acclaimed 2024 film Oddity, will direct.

While most people recognize Adam Scott these days for his starring role in Apple TV's Severance, he's certainly no stranger to the horror genre. He's appeared in the likes of Krampus, Piranha 3D, and Hellraiser: Bloodline, and will be featured next in Osgood Perkins' The Monkey. He's also been tapped to headline the new flick by Irish director Damian McCarthy, which comes hot on the heels of his 2024 breakout hit Oddity.
Per Variety, Scott will star in the supernatural horror film Hokum, which is slated to begin filming in Ireland later this month. This will mark only McCarthy's third feature, following not only Oddity last year, but 2020's Caveat, which was equally unhinged (remember the bunny?). Every genre has positives and negatives that give viewers ample opportunities to have engaging, interesting discussions. Horror has a wide range of sub-genres that pair well with different themes and tones fitting to the nuances of the genre, making it entertaining for many different viewers. However, the complexities of horror also cause a great deal of controversy that makes the fanbase just as pleasant as daunting.
Even successful films from this year, including Late Night With the Devil, Oddity, and The Substance, are the subject of contempt for many viewers, each offering their own reason why certain films don't meet expectations. This conflicting reception to inclusions in the genre has to do with the complexities of fan's expectations and industry trends, which highlight the harsh realities of being a fan of horror.

The horror genre has been experiencing a massive change for the last decade. The masterful art of terrifying the viewers has categorically evolved, transitioning out of trope-filled storytelling and approach. Instead of blatantly depending upon supernatural elements, most horror movies have shifted to a slow and steady buildup supported by a strong foundation of good writing and direction. Recent hits like Longlegs, When Evil Lurks, Oddity, and more have awakened the audience's excitement for psychological horrors, which are proficiently well-balanced with adequate jumpscares and ominous presences.
Having said that, if fans have particularly enjoyed the brilliant amalgamation of crime drama and horror like Longlegs, there's an 11-year-old underrated title that will also invoke similar emotions.

2024 was a slightly odd year for horror movies. Audiences and horror fans were completely divided on some of the most critically acclaimed films of the genre. Many of the best horror films went completely under the radar and remain obscure. Arguably the biggest horror release (Nosferatu) was a remake of a century-old film. Most others were just decent, fun, but slightly forgettable films. That somewhat applies to the Carrie-Anne Moss and Douglas Smith movie, Die Alone, but its grim world-building and nasty ending prevent it from being forgettable. That, and a wonderfully memorable performance from Frank Grillo.
While Grillo led his own fun horror movie in 2024 (Werewolves), he only appears for a bit in the final act of Die Alone, but it's a crucial scene and a brilliant little performance from an actor who is usually a much bigger part of things. His inclusion is a testament to the film's strong writing and unusual narrative,...

The rejuvenation of the horror genre in the past five years has been simply sublime. Recent hits like Oddity, Longlegs, and more have redefined the popular genre, transforming the canvas and introducing a new era of terror. While fans have been over the moon with new and original titles, nothing can beat the hype of a legacy sequel. Just when fans thought that their favorite cult classic was done for good, filmmakers appeared out of nowhere, reviving famed horror franchises like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
It’s safe to say that the year 2025 will be gold for horror franchises, both new and returning. From timeless teen slashers like I Know What You Did Last Summer to horror giants like The Conjuring, this year, there will be no escaping the supremacy of the horror genre.

From director Damian McCarthy (Caveat), Oddity tells the story of a female psychic attempting to get to the bottom of her twin sister’s murder by returning to the scene of the crime.
Oddity is all about its atmosphere. Thankfully the filmmakers have clearly put a lot of effort into creating this part of the movie, whether it be through camera work, sound design, the score, or the placement of jump scares. It all feels incredibly well thought out.
I’m sure many people viewing it will see it as one of the scariest films they have ever seen and that claim would be justified. It does an excellent job of building up two or three really good jump scares. And even knowing that doesn’t hinder the moments because you...

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
I’ll be blunt: it wasn’t a good year for films, or at least for me it wasn’t. The following ten films and five honorable mentions, while fine to very good, represent a step down from what 2023 offered. Part of this is due to an industry impacted by two strikes in 2023 that cancelled or postponed many productions. Part of it is personal, in that I couldn’t see as many films as I’d like in 2024. And part of it has to do with the large amount of mediocrity I did see, of films that lacked risk and imagination. A lot of movies preferred to ape their influences rather than build off of them, and in turn coddled viewers with familiarity. By the end of...

"Sometimes I dream..." Time for one more stunning look back at the past year in movies. Are your favorites included? As 2024 winds down and we get ready to jump right into 2025, cinema lovers have been making their own video recaps and trailer mashups. One of them that debuted just days before the New Year arrives is this one created by a filmmaker / editor known as Clementine Narcisse who often just goes by simply "Clementine". Her 2024 in Film video is a ravishing, refreshing, amusing roundup of some of her favorite films from this year. I'm delighted to see her include a bunch of under-the-radar picks that aren't mentioned as much as they should by others - terriific films such as Monkey Man, Problemista, Blink Twice, Bird, The Outrun, Cuckoo, Saturday Night, The Last Showgirl, Love Lies Bleeding, Oddity, The Shadow Strays. Her editing in this so good, especially cutting together all...

This has been a phenomenal year for horror movies. I’m talking one of the greatest years the genre has ever seen. From a villain with a wacky appearance to a one-night stand that doesn’t go expected all the way to body horror getting some theatrical recognition, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Especially if you love performances because…boy howdy. So join us here at JoBlo Horror as we take a look at the Best Horror Movies of 2024!
Before we get into our list, we need to make sure it’s clear: Spoiler Alert. The whole point of this is to gush about why we love these films so we’re gonna talk about the twists and turns. You’ve been warned. And only 10 spots in a year such as this, means some difficult choices had to be made. Each of these could have easily...

It should be no surprise that, as another year winds to a close, horror continued to dominate in 2024. Terrifier 3, for example, became the highest-grossing Unrated movie in box office history, throwing all the indie cinema rules out the window in the process. Longlegs caught everyone off guard, becoming Neon‘s highest-grossing film upon release in July, and streaming service Mubi smartly acquired the body horror movie The Substance, where it became the platform’s highest-grossing film at the box office.
That doesn’t even touch on the huge studio earners like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or Alien: Romulus. Yet the surprises extend well beyond how well horror performed at the box office; 2024 horror is defined by the way it refused to stay within its tidy genre bounds.

The holidays are officially in full swing and that means a lot of folks are heading into some well-earned time off, and probably some long-overdue catchup on the biggest movies of the year. As we all know in 2024, trying to find out what’s streaming where is half the battle when you’re wondering what to watch.
Whether you’re looking for major box office hits like “Beetlejuice Beeltejuice” and “Inside Out 2” or lesser-known gems like “Thelma” and “The Bikeriders,” there are a ton of 2024 movies that you can watch on streaming over the holiday. Want to caught up with some awards contenders? “Conclave,” “Challengers” and “Emilia Perez” are all streaming now too, among others. Rather catch up on horror? “The Substance” is on Mubi and, naturally, Shudder has you covered with “Oddity,” “In a Violent Nature” and more.

Overall, it's safe to say that 2024 was a solid year for movies. Desert epics like Dune: Part Two and Furiousa: A Mad Max Saga provided endless thrills and spectacle, while hits like Anora and Challengers served up fiery, character-driven drama bolstered by compelling performances. Even horror fans got their fair share of scares with Oddity and the surprisingly great The First Omen, to name a couple.

Horror, namely how it finds its audience, continues to evolve in ways that confound studio executives and in the process prove the durability of the genre. For all the hand-wringing about supposed “horror fatigue” and the persistent urge to bury a genre that’s remained profitable even in (oftentimes especially in) the worst of times, 2024 proved once again that demons and psychos and killer clowns are as popular as they’ve ever been—just not necessarily those that have a big studio label seared into their clammy flesh.
If horror in the 2010s was dominated by aging juggernauts like Paramount and molded by the growing dominance of younger, hipper, genre-focused studios like A24 and Blumhouse, the chaotic 2020s are, fittingly, increasingly being shaped by less predictable players. Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, distributed by Cineverse, kicked Joker: Folie à Deux to the curb in its first weekend, and now it...

2024 has been a great year for horror fans, especially over on Shudder, where some of the most ambitious and original movies have debuted to widespread acclaim. It appears as if 2025 is going to be no different, as the streaming service has just acquired the rights to The Ugly Stepsister – a twisted fairy tale that puts a body horror spin on an old classic.
Written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Emilie Blichfeldt (in her feature debut), The Ugly Stepsister stars Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, and Ane Dahl Torp, and follows the character of Elvira as she "prepares to earn the prince’s affection at any cost. In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes to become the belle of the ball." Writer-director Damien Mc Carthy’s Oddity didn’t have the splashy marketing of, say, Longlegs, but it’s a corking horror you don’t want to miss.
Anticipation is the lifeblood of a good horror yarn, and writer-director Damien Mc Carthy creates an ingeniously tense scenario in his low-budget shocker, Oddity. A golem-like wooden effigy sits at a dining table in a spacious yet austere converted barn in a remote part of Ireland. Its mouth is frozen in a silent scream; its hands sit flat on the table as though it’s performing some sort of seance.
For a large chunk of his engagingly twisty narrative, Mc Carthy invites us to wonder: what is this thing? Is it going to move? And if so when, and what will it do?
Taking in just a handful of (largely interior) locations, Oddity feels like a welcome throwback to the quintessentially British horror of something like Amicus Productions,...

Before Damian Mc Carthy blew the socks off of horror fans this year with his low-budget indie hit Oddity, he directed his first feature film back in 2020 thats largely remained a hidden gem, until now. Thanks to Shudder, Mc Carthys Caveat is now available to stream on the service, and if you thought Oddity was impressive, dont sleep on this one because it's equally terrifying.
Starring Johnny French, the film follows his partially amnesiac drifter character of Isaac as he takes a job caring for a psychologically disturbed woman (Leila Sykes) on a remote island. Its a simple premise, but the way Mc Carthy executes it is a wonder to behold. Like Oddity, its somewhat of a slow build, inducing dread and anxiety with each passing frame to create an atmospheric horror film that descends deeper and deeper into madness as its mystery is revealed. And while Oddity had that disturbing wooden mannequin,...

The surging horror movie hit of 2024 is now succeeding on streaming, too. With the year nearing its end, 2024 has been a great year for horror movies, with Alien: Romulus emerging as arguably the biggest hit of the year with over $350 million at the box office. A Quiet Place: Day One also capitalized on the established popularity of a franchise and pulled in over $260 million. On the lower-budget side of the spectrum, Blumhouse released several hits such as Speak No Evil, Imaginary, and Night Swim even if they didn't always resonate with critics.
Some of the year's most unique and unforgettable horror hits have come from indie film, including Longlegs starring Nicolas Cage, which leveraged a masterful marketing campaign to make over $100 million at the box office. Another unexpected success has been the unrated Terrifier 3 which, made on a minuscule budget of $2 million, made nearly $80 million at the box office.

Despite some misfires, 2024 has been a relatively strong year for horror. Alien: Romulus is the most blockbuster-sized horror movie to succeed this year, and The First Omen is a critically-lauded standout. Lower-budget Blumhouse horror titles like Speak No Evil, Imaginary, and Night Swim have also been hits, even if not all struck a chord with critics. It's the indie space, however, that delivered some of this year's most memorable and unique horror movies.
No discussion of 2024 horror is complete without mentioning Oz Perkins' Longlegs, which utilized a stellar marketing campaign to become a major box office hit, in addition to earning generally positive reviews. Terrifier 3, an unrated horror gore-fest, has also been an unprecedented success. Horror movies have been with us for a very, very long time. This genre, despite inducing shock and fear among the viewers, is extremely popular, and starting with Alfred Hitchcock, some directors have made careers by making horrors. George Romero, John Carpenter, and Wes Craven are considered classics, while today, we have a series of new, young directors who are great in the genre.
And since we’re writing this in a period of year when horrors are even more popular than usual, we have found a very interesting report that has seemingly determined the scariest horror movie of all time based on objective scientific criteria.
If you want to know how the guys at Science of Scare determined this and which horror movie actually won the prestigious title, we advise you to stick with us until the end as we are going to reveal absolutely everything you need to know.

As a visionary modern horror filmmaker, Mike Flanagan's views on the genre are well worth listening to. Through his work in both film and TV, Flanagan has used horror to explore personal and emotional stories. Films like Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor have wonderful intersection and character work, while never losing sight of what makes the genre great, and providing the audience with genuine scares. However, beyond being scary on their own terms, Flanagan's projects invariably demonstrate his respect for the broader genre and reveal several major influences.
Flanagan has a love for all types of horror, from ghosts to vampires, and everything in between. The director has consistently shown appreciation for all kinds of things that go bump in the night, both in his own films and through the kinds of movies he recommends. In Irish folklore and literature dating back to the 1500s, writers from the island nation have written about mythical beings known as “Fetches” that haunt people whose days are numbered. According to legend, Fetches take on the physical form of the humans they visit — and if your own creepy doppelganger visits you in the evening, it means your death is imminent. But if they visit you in the morning, you can prepare yourself for a long life ahead of you.
That mythology is set to come to life in “The Fetch,” a new horror movie debuting at the Austin Film Festival that promises to fuse Irish folklore with modern day scares. According to an official synopsis, the film follows a grieving father who finds himself haunted by the Fetch as he mourns the death of his only son.
“The Fetch” marks the feature directorial debut of J.C. Doler, who has previously released six short films.

Every year, the Science of Scare project gathers together 250 people to help determine the most frightening horror movies ever made. While Scott Derricksons 2012 film Sinister and the 2020 UK film Host have been trading the top spots since the project began in 2020, a new independent horror movie has emerged out of Ireland this year to crack the Top 20, beating out a number of other 2024 films that were nowhere to be seen.

Movie fans likely already have subscriptions to streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Those who love horror have to make room in the budget for Shudder. Beta testing for Shudder began in the summer of 2015, and back then there were only a handful of titles available to watch. Now, Shudder is more popular than ever with over 1 million subscribers as of 2023.
Shudder has become a household name not only because of its library of classic and foreign horror films but also for its original content. There were many incredible Shudder originals released in 2024, not limited to Oddity, In a Violent Nature, and Late Night with the Devil. Meanwhile, two other films, MadS and Azrael starring Samara Weaving, are due for release on the platform later this month. Some of these movies are stronger than others, but each is worthwhile viewing for any horror aficionado.

2024 is shaping up as a year to remember for horror. While not every film has been a smash hit with audiences, theaters have welcomed some of the most refreshing and entertaining flicks in years, from the surprise favorite Late Night With the Devil to the bloody new feature from Radio Silence, Abigail. One title that has mostly flown under the radar for general audiences thus far, however, is Oddity, an Irish horror flick and Shudder original that premiered at SXSW earlier this year to rave reviews. As Halloween approaches, the little film by writer-director Damian McCarthy is starting to make waves on streaming, cracking into Reelgood's Top-10 movies for the week of October 3 through October 9.

Oddity has become a major streaming hit after earning 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Damian McCarthy, the Irish horror film premiered at SXSW in spring 2024, where it was met with a glowing reception from those in attendance. Starring Carolyn Bracken, Gwilym Lee, Johnny French, Steve Wall, and Caroline Menton, among others, the Shudder original tells the story of a psychic medium as she attempts to uncover the truth about her sister's murder, with Oddity reviews praising the scares, atmosphere, and filmmaking.
New data from Reelgood now reveals that Oddity ranks as the tenth most popular movie on streaming in the U.S. for the week of October 3 9. The movie, which is available to watch on Shudder and AMC+, falls short of titles like Killer Heat (2024), Inside Out 2 (2024), Challengers (2024), and Apartment 7A (2024).
With Halloween approaching, the top 10 list features a number of horror tiles, including one in the top position.

While not many viewers have heard of one of 2024's great horror hidden gems, Mike Flanagan is right to spotlight the Irish indie Oddity as one of the years highlights. It might seem hard to believe when there is an entire slate of upcoming Mike Flanagan TV shows and movies on the way, but there was a time when the genre legend was an obscure indie director. Before the breakout success of his 2018 Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House made him a major name in Hollywood horror, Flanagan was best known for smaller horror movies like Oculus, Before I Wake, and Hush.

The paranormal and the horror mix together in Oddity, creating an authentically hair-raising experience that is as unsettling as it is terrifying.
Before that, Flanagan was 2011's helmer of the under-seen indie horror Absentia.
