It’s likely you’ve heard from your neighborhood cinephile about Korean thriller films. Whether it’s the classic Oldboy, I Saw The Devil, or a more recent Bong Joon-Ho obsession, there’s no denying that Koreans just know how to make high-quality, terrifying thrillers that’ll keep your adrenaline flowing for days. But what if I said they’re just as good at doing it in the series format? When you hear “K-drama,” you probably think romantic comedy or pure drama, but the thriller/psychological drama genre is just as big in the country. And you notice this, especially when even the rom-coms or the dramas will have a mystery serial killer angle to them. It’s just something that somehow works for them. But! If you’re keen on watching a thriller that has a satisfying ending and is pure thriller, here are some recommendations for you to...

It’s a story — the attempted genocide of Europe’s Jews by the Nazis and their willing executioners — that has been told many times before. But, say the creators of the new German TV drama The Interpreter of Silence, it’s a story that needs to be told again and again.
The five-part limited series, which bowed on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ worldwide Nov. 15, is up for this year’s Critics Choice Awards in the best foreign-language TV series category. The period drama will go up against the South Korean series Bargain, The Glory, Mask Girl and Moving, the French crime series Lupin, and the Italian mafia drama The Good Mothers.

There was no shortage of quality Korean shows to watch this year. From mystery thrillers and classic dramas to riveting reality series and heart-fluttering romances, 2023 was truly the year K-content ruled the roost. More recent releases like 1940s historical thriller, Gyeonseong Creature, with Park Seo-joon (The Marvels) and Han Soo-hee (My Name), and the latest season of horror drama favorite, Sweet Home, prove the momentum isn’t dying down anytime soon as we head into 2024.

Gone are the days when K-dramas almost exclusively meant love stories, period pieces and family dramas. Today, South Korea produces some of the most chilling and outrageously violent TV shows you’ll ever see—while also continuing to release the more traditional, wholesome fare that longtime K-drama fans fell in love with years ago.
The diversification of genres in recent years can largely be attributed to the rise of global streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+. In the past, most K-dramas were aired on broadcast TV, which comes with certain guidelines around what can and cannot be shown. By contrast, streamers aren’t bound by such rules around content.
The result? More extreme and graphic K-dramas, with Korean original series on Ott services like Netflix, often featuring plenty of gore and violence, and sometimes some sex and nudity as well. This year saw a host of Korean thrillers and horror series,...

Mask Girl: A dark and confusing thriller that highlights the dangers of social media stardom. Engaging and popular. Love To Hate You: A fun fake dating rom-com with great chemistry between the leads. A light and enjoyable watch. Crash Course in Romance: A heartwarming romance about second chances in love. Sweet and uplifting, especially for those who have sacrificed their dreams.
A lot of great and addicting K-dramas were released in 2023. With shows like Squid Game and Business Proposal having popularized the genre internationally, Korean dramas have upped their game when it comes to engaging shows. 2023 was an excellent year for K-dramas, with dozens coming out on Netflix, Viki, and Paramount+, among other streaming services. The output of fantastic dramas will only serve to lift the genre higher.
The best K-dramas are those that keep viewers engaged, so the most addicting K-dramas of 2023 are a mixed bag in terms of genre.

When Netflix announced in April that it’s planning to spend $2.5 billion on Korean content across the next four years, on top of the more than $1 billion already spent since 2016, it made the world sit up and take notice.
In many ways, spending heavily in Korea is a no-brainer. Netflix has already had a global breakout Korean hit with Squid Game, followed by a slew of shows that may not have reached the same dizzy heights but are still international hits such as period zombie drama Kingdom, supernatural thriller Hellbound, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, about a female lawyer on the autism spectrum, revenge saga The Glory, and survival game show Physical: 100.
Of course, Netflix is not the only global streamer in the Korean content game, but it was arguably the first to spot its international potential. On a recent trip to Seoul, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said that 60% of its...

The following contains spoilers for Mask Girl, now streaming on Netflix.
Genre fans can always count on Netflix for Korean horror and thrillers, and the streaming service's newest show, Mask Girl, is a welcomed addition. However, it happens to have a novel approach concerning character development. Instead of relying on the time-honored tradition of constructing a narrative with a clear-cut protagonist and villain, the seven-episode miniseries is littered with plenty of anti-heroes. In short, none of the main characters are good people.
While this may not go over well with some viewers since Mask Girl makes it challenging to pick an honest personality to root for, it makes a lot of sense. Due to the plot, which covers everything from bullying and objectification to murder and society's obsession with beauty standards, there are no real winners. As a result, Mask Girl's main characters live tough, arduous lives where it's hard to be righteous.

Kim Mo-mi, the central character in the Netflix K-drama Mask Girl, has always wanted to be a star. She learned early on how to dance and exude charm on stage, but was torn down by bullies who said that her face, which was not conventionally attractive, would stop her from becoming famous. But Mo-mi finds a way around that — she becomes Mask Girl online, guarding her visage and true name so that she can show off her skills and be whoever she wants to be. From that point on, the role is inhabited by three different actors, each signifying a distinct moment in Mo-mi’s life.

If you’ve enjoyed binge-watching the new Korean drama Mask Girl on Netflix over the weekend and don’t know what to do with yourself after, we thought of curating a list of adrenalin-pumping revenge thrillers that will keep you hooked. This new show has to be one of the more exciting ones of the year, starring so many amazing women in powerful roles. As we’ve seen many times, the “revenge” genre is one that is very popular amongst Koreans, and this year alone, we’ve had three massively successful ones already. Mask Girl is unique in the way it plays with the timelines throughout the show. While there aren’t many shows that follow the same pattern, there are many that are wholly about vengeance and keep you on the edge of your seat in the same manner. Murders, debauchery, and action—we cover it all in this list.

The finale of Mask Girl is as gritty as expected. It’s a fierce fight between mothers and women who would do anything to protect their children. It’s the most intense episode of the show and finishes off quite cleanly. Sometimes redemption is not the end goal; it’s only revenge. Mask Girl is a great thriller drama with a lot of twists and turns that keep one hooked from start to finish. What is Kyung-Ja’s justice? How far will she go, and does Mo-Mi find her salvation in protecting her daughter? Let’s find out in the ending episode of Mask Girl.

Episode 6 of Mask Girl really ties up things very neatly and truly embraces the revenge thriller genre. It may not have as big a twist as Oldboy, but it’s just as exciting and almost as shocking. We’re left with a few questions after the sixth episode and are hoping the finale will tie it all up neatly with a bow and leave no questions unanswered. Episode 6 has a large time jump from 2011 to 2023, and we see a huge change in Mo-Mi’s character as well as her appearance as she is older and has been in prison for years. We see the prison system and how some people are influential, but Mo-Mi manages to stand her ground and make her own space there too.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In the Episode?
Finally, we’ve returned to Mo-Mi’s side of the story after four episodes of new perspectives.

As you keep going with Mask Girl, you’re given new and unexpected twists by the episode. We were wondering why the show was set so far back if our protagonist was in her prime in 2009, but we’ve finally reached the present day. Episode 5 follows Mo-Mi’s daughter, Kim Mi-Mo. The effect of generational trauma is explored in this episode, and we can see the phrase like mother, like daughter play out. It’s an interesting depiction of the thought process of a child who doesn’t know anything about her parents and lives with a grandmother who essentially hates her own daughter. Let’s find out why Mi-Mo hates Mo-Mi so much.

Mask Girl keeps getting better with each episode. The K-drama uses familiar tropes and previously seen plot twists in a more original manner. As the story of Mask Girl progresses, we get introduced to new characters who contribute to Mo-Mi’s plot. Mo-Mi has had a rough life, but she’s also a serial killer now. Chun-Ae and Mo-Mi’s story is almost like that of the princess and the pauper, but with plastic surgery and poor lifestyles involved. They find sisterhood in each other, but what makes them connect so much? Let’s find out in episode 4 of Mask Girl.

In a thriller, we rarely get to see the perspective of every side involved. Mask Girl connects the dots of an investigation through the many perspectives of the people involved. Episode 1 introduced us to the main character; episode 2 took us to the guy who was obsessed with her; and episode 3 was about his mother, who was desperate to find him. This doesn’t stop the story from progressing, though, and although some incidents overlap for us to understand the timeline of things, it conveniently moves forward in such a way that it keeps us engaged and wanting more. The end of episode 3 is a huge cliffhanger, and we can’t wait to move on to the next episode to learn more.

From a simple story about a girl who found her calling in livestreaming to an incel who is obsessed with her and would do anything to protect her, episode 2 of Mask Girl completely switches gears. The show is crass and has a noir-like quality to its presentation, making us sit on the edge of our seats at all times. While episode 1 was about the namesake of the show title, the second episode is about her fans, particularly one specific fan who is observant enough to figure out who she is by just looking at her manicure. The show is frighteningly accurate in regards to how terrible the lifestyle of a cam girl can get and how difficult it is to protect yourself in dangerous situations. The show also goes full Basic Instinct by the end of Mask Girl Episode 2.

Netflix Korean drama, Mask Girl, is set in the late 2000s, and the first observation one can make is how it’s even shot in the same manner. The first episode is extremely enticing and very quick-paced, leaving no room for distractions. The titular character, Kim Mo-Mi, is an ordinary girl with an ordinary life, but there’s something she’s hiding. Mask Girl follows the story of an ugly woman who wanted to be a celebrity all her life. As an adult, she still loves the applause and cheers of an audience and continues to be an excellent dancer. This leads her to use her talent in a new kind of way, where she can hide her face and continue to live her dream at night while working a terribly boring day job with overtime and a terrible boss. From the first episode, you can understand that Mask Girl...

The new Netflix thriller is proof that Korean storytellers still have it when it comes to revenge tales. I’m not sure why they’re so keen on this genre, but it seems to have worked grossly well for them since time immemorial. Going all the way back to the Vengeance trilogy and the most recent popular show, The Glory, it’s a subgenre that mostly finds success. Although you can’t really call Mask Girl original because, at the end of the day, every little detail of the show feels somehow familiar, it is the way it is presented that makes it unique. Mask Girl follows Kim Mo-Mi, an ordinary office worker by day and a cam-girl by night who gets embroiled in a murder mystery because of her night job. Mo-Mi’s story is poignant right from the start. She’s the ugly duckling that nobody wants anything to do with.

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.

Netflix has a string of K-dramas and movies coming to the platform in 2023. As Korean entertainment continues to gain notoriety worldwide, streaming services are playing a big part in this new wave as they make many shows accessible to a wider audience. In 2023, Netflix is ready to continue this trend by releasing multiple new K-dramas, ranging from all kinds of genres.
Over the years, the streaming service has already housed several great shows that eventually became worldwide phenomenons. For example, the Hyun-Bin and Son Ye-Jin-led show, Crash Landing On You, which is exclusively available on Netflix, was so successful, there are plans for an English-language adaptation for it. Meanwhile, Squid Game has become such a massive hit for the service that it resulted in an upcoming second season and a reality competition. Suffice it to say, there's clearly a growing interest in Korean entertainment. For those who are looking to delve deeper into it,...
