Not many actors can say they've had a career as impressive and diverse as Robin Williams. While he could knock comedic roles like Mrs. Doubtfire out of the park, Williams also delivered some amazing dramatic performances, especially with the cinematic masterpiece that is Good Will Hunting. Sometimes he could even be downright terrifying when the occasion called for it. Williams delivered what might be one of his best performances in his final film, Boulevard.

Sept. 29, 2006 forever changed Dito Montiel and Robert Downey Jr.’s lives.
It was not only the day that Downey was officially cast as Tony Stark in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, but it was also the theatrical release date of Montiel’s debut indie drama A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, starring Downey as a semi-autobiographical version of Montiel. The day cemented Downey’s return to industry prominence after a series of highly publicized personal struggles, and the random fall Friday had just as much meaning for Montiel after many of his own storybook ups and agonizing downs.
As a native of Queens in New York City, Montiel was something of a renaissance man before becoming a filmmaker. In the ’80s, he was a mainstay in NYC’s hardcore punk scene as the teenage frontman of Major Conflict. In 1989, his new band, Gutterboy, signed a then-record $1 million deal with Geffen Records.

Nancy Olson, the last living star of Billy Wilder’s seminal Hollywood satire Sunset Boulevard, still remembers Oscar night 1951. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three.
Olson, 96, shared her recollections on a recent episode of It Happened in Hollywood, The Hollywood Reporter‘s eyewitness film history podcast.
Olson was just 22 at the time, and Sunset Boulevard was only her second picture in a seven-year contract with Paramount Pictures. The role — Betty, a studio reader with ambitions to be a screenwriter — earned her a best supporting actress nomination.
“I did not expect to win and I did not win,” Olson told host Seth Abramovitch. “I felt very rewarded being nominated and that was quite enough.”
She says she sensed her fate was sealed when she entered the Pantages Theatre and was ushered to her less-than-prime spot. “I was seated in the back, on the side,” Olson says.

Despite having no real winter weather to speak of, living in Los Angeles often feels like looking out at the rest of the world from the inside of a snow globe.
In January 2025, L.A.’s happy little enclosure for controlled dream-making — the idyllic hometown for legendary A-list celebrities like Dustin Hoffman, Barbie, and the Santa Monica Ferris Wheel — filled with smoke and fire. Dangerous winds that spread the emergency event haven’t stopped blowing yet, but so far, they’ve left the promise of months, maybe even years, of disaster recovery ahead.
The comfortable climate of Southern California usually provides ideal conditions for filming. This has long made the city a prime shooting location and has inspired thousands — even millions — of starry-eyed dreamers to move here from other cities.
Pleasant weather and railroads essential to trade a century ago played key parts in helping Hollywood emerge as the premiere destination for the entertainment industry.

Love them or hate them, obsess over them or ignore them altogether, the Academy Awards are a cultural artifact whose history mirrors the very history of American film. Granted, as a gatekeeping and taste-managing institution, the Oscars have always been better at belatedly following and responding to winds of change in the industry than at anticipating or provoking them, and you could probably count on your fingers the number of times that the Oscar statuette in any given category went to a genuinely bold, bracing, game-changing winner. But they're as good a summation of the congealing of critical and commercial mainstream consensus over the decades as we film buffs have. And, as such, it's fascinating to look at the instances of the ultimate winner being so out of lockstep with that consensus as to cause an uproar.

Exclusive: Andrew Lloyd Webber has unveiled his new West End and Broadway musical: a magical romance called The Illusionist, directed by Sunset Boulevard’s Jamie Lloyd.
During a private audience at his penthouse office adjacent to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, one of six theatres controlled through his Lw Theatres group, the legendary composer of Phantom of the Opera and Evita gave Deadline an exclusive preview of three of the several numbers he has so far scored.
The impresario says Oscar-winning screenwriter Chris Terrio (Argo) “has done the book very much with me, but he’s the scriptwriter.” British songwriter Bruno Major is also attached.
Lloyd Webber performed an early draft of his score to Lloyd earlier this year as they began preparing to open Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, on Broadway. The show premiered at the St. James Theater on October 20 to ecstatic notices from the majority of critics.

In June, Cats: The Jellicle Ball seemed to shake Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats like a bottle of champagne, joyfully letting the old, vexatious material burst out on the stage at the Perelman Arts Center with glittery effervescence. Now, returning to Broadway in a stripped-down West End transfer, the heavy bones of Sunset Boulevard—Webber’s ponderous music, Don Black and Christopher Hampton’s repetitive lyrics, the general plodding approach to Billy Wilder’s 1950 film—drag behind director Jamie Lloyd’s austere vision like a body bag.
Lloyd’s ethos is all about turning the audience toward the text and performance, sharpening the listener’s ear by stripping away all the trappings of traditional productions, including, most of the time, eye contact between actors. That worked splendidly for his Cyrano de Bergerac at Bam two years ago with James McAvoy, as Edmond Rostand’s play is about the power of language itself.

Todd Haynes will be spending the better part of his May in France. Between a career retrospective at Paris’ Centre Pompidou and the premiere of his latest film, May December, in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the Oscar nominee will be jetting all over the country. The back-to-back events have meant Haynes has been working on his latest release while reliving the entirety of his film career, which has included Far From Heaven, Carol and Wonderstruck. Says Haynes of the retrospective, which will include a screening of May December, “It’ll be a trip.”
His latest film stars Natalie Portman as a Hollywood actress who travels to Georgia to research the life of Gracie (Julianne Moore, teaming with Haynes for the fourth time), who became tabloid fodder after she started a May-December relationship with Joe (Charles Melton), a man 23 years her junior. While preparing for the film about the couple’s past,...

Green Day helped popularize pop-punk music with mainstream audiences, largely due to their successful releases “Dookie,” “Nimrod,” and “American Idiot.” The band’s commercial success has matched their awards success, with five Grammys and 11 MTV Video Music Awards to their name. Perhaps the biggest honor the band has received is the Grammy for Record of the Year for perhaps their biggest hit, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” The song’s win marked a big moment not only for the rock band, but for rock music in general, especially with how strong its competition was. Let’s take a look back.

Morrissey has announced a new album, and it’s up for grabs to any label who wants it.
News of his forthcoming release, titled Without Music The World Dies, was shared via the musician’s Messages from Morrissey website on Monday (20 February).
According to the former Smiths frontman, the new record was recorded in France and features 10 new tracks, “described by [Morrissey’s co-writer and lead guitarist], Jesse Tobias as ‘a lightning strike’”.
However, the tracklist appears to give clues as to the overarching tone of the album – and it’s not a cheery one.
The ten tracks are listed as: “The Night Pop Dropped”, “Zoom Zoom The Little Boy”, “Boulevard”, “Headache”, “Without Music the World Dies”, “Suspicious Minds”, “Notre-Dame”, “Many Icebergs Ago”, “Happy New Tears” and “The Monsters of Pig Alley”.
As per the website, Morrissey wants anyone interested in releasing the new album to get in touch at an email provided.

I don’t know if all of the Waldo stories are consistent. I don’t know if they can be consistent, or if Deitch would want them to be.
I kind of hope they aren’t, actually. Memory is flawed, history is misunderstood, the past is a mystery. And demon-creatures shouldn’t be completely knowable, able to be nailed down to a specific timeline.
Alias the Cat! is a Waldo story: it’s almost twenty years old now, but close to the last major Waldo story to date. It followed A Shroud for Waldo and The Boulevard of Broken Dreams (probably the centerpiece of the Waldo universe) and was in turn added onto by The Search for Smilin’ Ed. Deitch’s most recent book, Reincarnation Stories, is a similar style but doesn’t include Waldo as far as I remember.
What does any of that mean?

News that he first spent the day going on a walk, during which he stopped to take a photo by the Fendi x Skims collab pop-up boutique on Rodeo Drive, which was closed at the time. "So I went further for my walk, looked at the beautiful mansions and walked to a park, then stopped by the Beverly Hills Hotel for...

When Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation of Sunset Boulevard premiered in 1993, it became a major hit. But few people then, or even now, are aware of a much earlier attempt to bring the classic film to the stage—by Gloria Swanson herself.
Boulevard! A Hollywood Story, directed by Jeffrey Schwarz, explores how Swanson, five years after her star turn as Norma Desmond in the 1950 Billy Wilder drama, threw herself into the adaptation project with a pair of unknowns. Her collaborators: handsome young composer Dickson Hughes and even more handsome young lyricist Richard Stapley.
“[Hughes and Stapley] were creative partners and also life partners,” Schwarz noted Tuesday night at the world premiere of his documentary at the Outfest film festival. The event took place—where else?—on Sunset Boulevard, at the DGA theater in West Hollywood.

Peter Bart: Like Anthony Hopkins, Most Of The Audience Skipped Awards Season; Will 2022 Be A Sequel?
Here’s the question haunting Hollywood about the Oscar show: Why expect next year to be different?
Anthony Hopkins’ no-show put a hole in the show last Sunday, but it was the slate of nominees that represented the biggest “hole.” Audience movies — films that register on some scale of awareness — were on the missing list. But will that change?
The majors are clearly panting to unleash their wannabe blockbusters like Black Widow and A Quiet Place Part II – pricey projects that were pushed back this year. The indies (those that survived) also wait nervously for theater openings and confirmed festival dates. “The pipelines are bulging at the moment but the delivery systems are still iffy,” observes one seasoned distributor.
Hollywood is trying to figure out what sort of product will define the majors in 2022, given their shifting hierarchies and redefined business models. Further, will those indie filmmakers who fueled the...

George Lopez has joined the cast of Dito Montiel’s “Afterward.”
It’s unclear what role Lopez will play in the dramatic thriller, but he joins an ensemble that includes Aaron Eckhart and Terrence Howard. Lionsgate Grindhouse is distributing the film in North America. “Afterward” will shoot this winter in California. Angel Oak Films is backing the movie and pre-sold foreign rights. Production was supposed to begin in the spring, but was delayed due to Covid-19.
The film centers on a father’s struggle to deal with the passing of his daughter, which leads him on a quest for truth and justice against corruption and small-town politics.
Montiel made his feature directorial debut with 2006’s “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.” His other credits include “Fighting,” “The Son of No One,” “Empire State,” “Boulevard,” “Man Down” and “The Clapper.”

Sunset Boulevard showed the damage wrought by fame. Seventy years on, popular culture is more obsessed than ever with being seen
On its release in August 1950, Sunset Boulevard punched its own industry in the face. Showbiz royalty, normally enclosed in an echo chamber of self-congratulation, sputtered into a rage. At a star-studded private screening on the eve of the film’s debut, MGM studio mogul Louis B Mayer lambasted the film’s Austrian-born director, Billy Wilder: “You befouled your own nest. You should be kicked out of this country, tarred and feathered, goddamn foreigner son of a bitch!” Wilder’s response: “Why don’t you go fuck yourself?”
Audiences, however, piled into cinemas. Serendipitously released in the same year as Joseph L Mankiewicz’s All About Eve – a ruthless dissection of the American theatre world – Sunset Boulevard became a landmark statement on the perils of celebrity culture. But 70 years later,...

Over a decade ago, Dito Montiel made a well received indie movie, “A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints,” but ever since has largely been failing upwards. A string of movies have followed, that find him working with decent names (Dwayne Johnson, Shia Labeouf, Kate Mara, Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Juliette Binoche) but all them have failed critically or commercially or both (“The Son Of No One,” “Empire State,” “Boulevard,” “Man Down“).

After coming out more than two years ago in the U.K., Robin Williams' final movie is going to get released in the U.S. The comedy Absolutely Anything, in which Williams voices a dog, has finally secured distribution from Atlas Distribution Co. Outside of the appeal that comes from Robin Williams, the movie also serves as something of a Monty Python reunion, which isn't likely to happen again on the big screen.
According to Deadline, Absolutely Anything will be given a limited release, with Atlas hoping to get the movie in theaters on May 12. Terry Jones, who directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Life of Brian and The Meaning of life, directed Absolutely Anything from a script that he wrote more than 20 years ago. The movie also stars Monty Python alums John Cleese, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. So comedy fans have several very good reasons to go see this movie.

It follows the stories of eight people – dealing with waking up with someone new or familiar and how they handle their need for instant gratification, intimacy issues and infidelities. The film stars and offers up some terrific performances from Michelle Lombardo (“Entourage”, “Californication”), Vanessa Evigan (“Blood Ransom”), and Roberto Aguire (“Boulevard”, “Struck by Lightning”). Filmmaker Shanra J. Kehl is riding high on her directorial debut, as the film earned her the Spirit of Independents Award at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival earlier this year.
