It seems Everett’s security company has been cutting into the Russian mob’s profits and they’re not happy about that. Since Phoenix is an action film, they decide to settle it with a fight to the death. That would be Everett’s death via a bullet to the head made to look like suicide.

WWE wrestler Natalie Eva Marie plays Everett’s daughter Fiona, Phoenix to her friends. She’s told of his death by General Shackleton. She knows he would never have killed himself and decides to put her hand-to-hand combat trainer’s skills to work finding answers.

It has been a long time since I’ve reviewed a direct-to-market Steven Seagal movie, in fact its been some time since I’ve so much as watched one for my own “pleasure”. I skipped over Sniper: Special Ops, Asian Connection, Code of Honour, and the most recent Dtv release End of a Gun, maily because after buying, watching, and often reviewing, every single film starring Seagal until the aforementioned I was suffering from Seagal burnout… A condition that often comes about in an audience when they realise that the once-agile former martial arts superstar has succumbed to appearing in extended cameos in the hopes that long-suffering fans – like myself – will buy the film on his name...

If you’ve got a zinger in your film, it helps to have a powerhouse speaker, like Ving Rhames, to deliver it. But failing that, there’s a breed of magnificently inappropriate actor who can inject fun into anything

In the unjustly neglected 2013 direct-to-the-abyss gangster film Force of Execution, Ving Rhames mouths these memorable words: “Look, I don’t know what the fuck happened to you. Mercenary: Absolution is the latest direct to market offering from action superstar Steven Seagal and marks the sixth time Seagal has worked with director/producer Keoni Waxman, previous films including Force of Execution, A Dangerous Man as well as the fantastic Maximum Conviction. Waxman also helmed a number of episodes of Seagal’s TV show, True Justice (released here in the UK as a series of direct to DVD “movies” starting with Deadly Crossing).

If there is any lesson to be learned in this scene, it's to never pick up a phone that isn't yours, which mysteriously starts ringing as soon as you enter the room. Steven Seagal has criticised Liam Neeson, saying that the Taken star is not a proper action hero.

Martial-artist-turned-Hollywood-star Seagal, whose credits include Under Siege and the recent Force of Execution, suggested that the Oscar-nominated Schindler's List actor wasn't "a great warrior".

Speaking to The Big Issue, Seagal said that Neeson was lucky to be getting so much work in action roles.

"He can't fight, he's not an action movie guy at all and he's getting action movies now so that should tell you something," Seagal commented.

"He's a great dramatic actor. Is he an action guy? No. Is he a great fighter, a great warrior? No. Let's be honest."

Seagal also lamented the demise of the more traditional action movie, adding that visual effects had levelled the playing field for the genre.

Steven Seagal has never been a big name in action movies for me. I’ve seen the popular ones he’s in such as the Under Siege movies but he never caught my interest like somebody like Jean-Claude Van Damme or Dolph Lundgren. This is probably why when I sat down to review Force of Execution I was more interested to see Danny Trejo’s name appear than Seagal, though even that is not a seal of quality.

Prisoners I still need to set aside the time to watch Prisoners again, but I've been listening to J?hann J?hannsson's score quite regularly as it is undoubtedly one of the year's best. I won't deny Prisoners has a few narrative hiccups that may have made it an otherwise better film, but it's still a good one and one of the best films 2013 has had to offer, especially one of the best studio films. The conviction of newly released straight-to-video action movie fight-fest Maximum Conviction was never in doubt. The film is set in a prison, after all. But its maximumness? That’s raised a few questions. I’m in the question answering business, so I sat down to watch the film to see just how maximum it was. The answer is that it was surprisingly maximum. In fact, it was so maximum that I felt compelled to list the 10 most maximum things about it. Why 10? Because it’s the maximum the editors would allow me.
