Last week, we left off in 1997. Batman And Robin came out and was a huge black eye for Warner Bros., effectively turning what was a once promising franchise into a punchline. Over the last week, it looked like the Lynchian fever dream of a Gambit film might not come to pass, with star (and producer) Channing Tatum apparently on the brink of exiting the X-Men spinoff.
It turns out Tatum is still on board, but the incident got us thinking of some other superhero castings that nearly were but never will be:
(Nb Please take it as read that Jude Law was considered for all of these roles.)

Hugh Jackman has become so synonymous with the iconic X-Man that it's strange to think of anyone else taking on the role (even if they inevitably will). But before he had been cast, Russell Crowe was considered to play the angry Canadian mutant, and is credited with directing Bryan Singer's attention towards his fellow Aussie.
A-list hopeful Dougray Scott came even closer, and was actually cast in the role before shooting on Mission: Impossible 2 overran,...

Matt Bomer has been cast in a new Montgomery Clift biopic.
The White Collar star will take on the role of the Hollywood legend in the new film.

Bomer appeared in Magic Mike, and will next be seen in Space Station 76, Winter's Tale and The Normal Heart.
He was reported to be Brett Ratner's first choice to play Superman when the director was in line for the project. He voiced the superhero in the animated Superman: Unbound.

The highlights from this year's Comic-Con were Tom Hiddleston surprising Hall H as Loki and Andrew Garfield spending a majority of his panel in character as Spider-Man. With the exception of Sacha Baron Cohen and the Spinal Tap crew, actors very rarely make appearances dressed in character. An even rarer sight is seeing voice actors dressed as the animated characters they play. It can be a bit bizarre, but it's always a treat to see. Here are 15 (and a half-ish) actors in cosplay as their own characters.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
As part of their panel for Sdcc '13, the cast pre-recorded a bit that had them "forced" to dress up as their cartoon counterparts -- Bill Hader as Flint Lockwood, Anna Faris as Sam Sparks, Andy Samberg as Brent McHale, and Terry Crews as Earl Devereaux.

With interest in Superman at an all time high thanks to Man of Steel coming out in less than a week, DC Animation have released Superman: Unbound to capitalise on the attention. And while I’m sure Man of Steel will be an excellent film, Superman: Unbound certainly isn’t.
Based upon Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s 2008 story arc, Superman: Brainiac, Unbound features Brainiac, a super-powerful, hyper intelligent green alien with tubes sticking out of his head who collects cities from around the universe and stores them in jars, who turns his attention to Earth with the intention of miniaturising Metropolis to join his collection of bottled cities and blow up Earth. Superman to the rescue!
This is Superman’s first encounter with Brainiac though his cousin, Kara/Supergirl, has faced him before. Decades earlier Brainiac stole the Kryptonian city Kandor, shrinking it into one of his jars,...

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is collaborating with Bruce W. Timm and Warner Bros. on a new Superman short film, in conjunction with the 75th Anniversary of this iconic superhero. The studio has released a logo that will be used on all of its Superman-themed products and initiatives, which you can take a look at below.
No story details have been confirmed for the two-minute short, but insiders claim it will be one continuous shot without edits. The short will pay homage to the various incarnations of Superman throughout the years, including Max Fleischer's cartoons, film performances by George Reeves and Christopher Reeve, iconic versions drawn by artists Wayne Boring, Curt Swan and Neal Adams, and Henry Cavill's interpretation in Man of Steel. Warner Bros. and DC are planning on showing an animatic version of the short at San Diego Comic-Con 2013, before it debuts this fall in multiple platforms.

The first trailer for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's animated DC comics film Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox is now available for you to watch. The story is based on Geoff Johns' graphic novel Flashpoint, and the story centers on the Flash who wakes up devoid of his super powers. It looks like it could be a decent movie. I'm sure we'll get a chance to check it out at Comic-Con this year.
When time travel allows a past wrong to be righted for Flash and his family, the event’s temporal ripples prove disastrous, creating a fractured, alternate reality where the Justice League never formed, and even Superman is nowhere to be found. Amidst a new world being ravaged by a fierce war between Wonder Woman’s Amazons and Aquaman’s Atlanteans, Flash must team with a grittier, more violent Batman and government agent Cyborg to restore the continuity of Flash’s original timeline.

With 2013 being the 75th anniversary of Superman and Man of Steel scheduled to come out this summer it was a forgone conclusion DC would release their emblematic direct to home media animated feature this year. DC certainly has been more successful than their marvelous competition at translating their classic stories to this format. Superman: Unbound however, ends up being a mediocre entry for this franchise. With a limited scope and a stereotypical plot it adds nothing to the Superman mythos. It feels less like an extended feature and more like a pilot episode of an upcoming television series. The animation and voice acting are both handled with care, but neither is given that much to work with. The...

Upstream Color Shane Carruth's new film found its way into 43 theaters and grossed $352,400 over the course of 31 days and now the self-distributed picture finds its way to DVD and Blu-ray. I've already discussed the film and its meaning on more than one occasion (here and here) and certainly recommend you give it a look. I'm not entirely sure it is a film you simply must buy, but I'm certain those of you intrigued by its mysteries will enjoy diving in yourselves.

“Superman: Unbound” is the 16th movie from DC now under the DC Animated Universe name, and like all of those that came before it, it is another solid entry into their series of direct to disc films. Based on the Action Comics story arc “Brainiac” by Geoff Johns, the comic aimed to retcon the villain a bit as well as return him to being a true threat to the Man of Steel. The fifth movie to star Superman, this one takes a well known villain and some classic story elements and creates a well written drama filled with action and emotion. Brainiac is a villain that has gone through many incarnations over the decades. When he first appeared he was a green skinned guy in short pants and a purple top with some mental abilities and a force field, which is the look he held all the way til “Superfriends...

Superman: Unbound is based on the 2008 comic book miniseries “Brainiac” by DC Entertainment creative head Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank. The story re-imagines the titular Brainiac – one of Superman’s most iconic villains – as an alien-turned-cybernetic organism seeking to catalogue and control countless alien cities, which he shrinks down and keeps as mementos aboard his ship, before destroying the very planet he robbed.
When a Brainiac probe droid lands on Earth, Superman intercepts it and learns from his cousin, Supergirl, that Brainiac once attacked Krypton and made off with the city of Kandor – an attack Supergirl barely survived. Determined to free Kandor and stop Braniac, Superman flies off into space; however, Brainiac is stronger and more cunning than the Man of Steel could’ve imagined, leaving Metropolis vulnerable for theft, and Earth facing destruction.

Moviefone's New Release of the Week "Jack Reacher" What's It About? Tom Cruise stars in the long-anticipated adaptation of the best-selling series of novels about a tough-as-nails military investigator searching for a deadly sniper who has already claimed several victims. Haven’t gotten enough of the big blue boy scout in animated form yet? Good, cause here’s a new clip from his latest direct-to-dvd original animated adventure, “Superman: Unbound”, along with two interview clips, one featuring “White Collar” star Matt Bomer (as the voice of Superman) and the other with “Castle’s” Stana Katic, voicing the rather odd looking Lois Lane (is it me or does Lois have purple eyes in this movie?). Apparently it’s really tough being the Man of Steel. It’s a good thing he can deflect bullets and fly. That should come in handy when he wants to chill out after a good argument with the missus. "...'Unbound' might be the most violent and bloodiest Dcau Superman film to date. Braniac and his robotic cronies are merciless in their attack on aliens and humans alike and the animation makes no great effort to hide fatalities." Superman: Unbound is the 16th DC Animated Universe (Dcau) from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment. Based on the 2008 story-arc, Superman: Braniac from Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, the adaptation is not a panel for panel recreation of that story. Instead, the film picks and chooses which elements of the five-issue story to embrace and leaves the rest on the cutting room floor. This is something Supervising Producer James Tucker said would occur during his tenure atop the animation branch of WB. Of course, longtime Dcau fans will know that aside from The Dark Knight Returns, no other Dcau film was a panel for panel adaptation but what...

Here's a new film clip and a few new photos from DC Entertainment's latest animated comic book adventure Superman: Unbound. The clip takes place very early on in the movie, and it features Molly Quinn (Castle) as Supergirl saving Lois Lane (Stana Katic) from a group that has kidnapped her. I'm not sure how well this movie is going to received by fans. I liked aspects of it but didn't like others. All-in-all I thought it was entertaining, but I'll never watch it again.
The movie is partially based on the Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's 2008 Action Comics storyline "Brainiac." Also starring is the film is Matt Bomer (White Collar) as the voice of Clark Kent/Superman, and John Noble (Fringe) as Brainiac.

Warner Home Video has released the first film clip from DC Entertainment's new animated movie Superman: Unbound. It features Superman's first encounter with Brainiac, "a destructive force who has been devastating planets across the galaxy -- with Earth next in his sights."
I watched the movie up at WonderCon a few weeks ago, and it was actually quite entertaining. The story and script were solid, but the animation was really weak this time around.
