Georgia matriarch Mabel "Madea" Simmons (Tyler Perry) and her great-niece Eileen Murphy (Anna Maria Horsford) spend Christmas with Eileen's daughter Lacey (Tika Sumpter), Lacey's husband Connor (Eric Lively), and Connor's parents Buddy (Larry the Cable Guy) and Kim (Kathy Najimy) Williams at Eileen and Connor's farm in Alabama. The problem is that Lacey is black and Connor is white, and Eileen doesn't know that they are married, because Lacey has introduced Connor as the "hired hand." Fortunately, Madea is there to give everyone her unique gift of tough love.

A Madea Christmas is based on the stage play "A Madea Christmas" by Tyler Perry. The movie itself was written, directed, and co-produced by Perry. A Madea Christmas is preceded by Madea, grand-mère justicière (2005) (2005), Affaire de femmes (2006) (2006), Meet the Browns (2008) (2008), Madea Goes to Jail (2009) (2009), I Can Do Bad All by Myself (2009) (2009) and Madea: Protection de témoins (2012) (2013), and followed by Boo! A Madea Halloween (2016) (2016), and Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween (2017) (2017)—the series being accompanied with an animated movie Madea's Tough Love (2015) (2015).

At the Christmas Jubilee, Lacey thanks the Sheldon Construction Company for their sponsorship and their pledge to fund the McCoy School with $100,000 for the next four years. The announcer thanks Mrs Lacey Williams for her help, and Oliver (James Roch) realizes that Lacey is already married to Connor. In the final scene, Bailey sings "Mary Did You Know?".
