Cloud 9

Three Shades of Brown
Whether you are British or not, the ‘rude boy’, the ‘freshie’ and the ‘coconut’ have graced your life with their presence.

A ‘rude boy’ is that lawless South Asian lad who likes Ska or Reggae. In other words, a brown guy trying to be black. A coconut is yes indeed an oval brown seed of a tropical palm lined with white flesh. However, a ‘coconut’ is also a brown guy trying to be white. A ‘freshie’ is an immigrant who has just arrived in the country- that brown guy who is oblivious to how brown he is.

Now, here’s a question: What happens when a ‘rude boy’, a ‘freshie’ and a ‘coconut’ move into a London flat together?

Answer: Three Shades of Brown! Three highly conflicting personalities that can only spell Doom!

The multi talented DJ, writer and director Shai Hussain presents Three Shades of Brown, a comedy web...

Valmike Rampersad: 'Cloud 9 has been a brilliant opportunity'
Valmike Rampersad has described the experience of working on Cloud 9 as "a brilliant opportunity".

The 32-year-old star plays the lead role of Ajay Shah in the path-breaking series produced by Brit-Asian lifestyle channel Zing TV.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the experience, Rampersad said: "It was an amazing experience to work for several months solidly and so intensely for 125 episodes.

"I think once it stops airing on TV, then it might kick in that it's over. But right now it hasn't sunk in. Obviously I'm gutted it's over. It's been a massive learning curve. A brilliant opportunity."

The UK's first British Asian daily soap featuring a multicultural cast, Rampersad feels that the show achieved its objective in representing the cultural experience of a new generation of British Asians through realistic storylines and characters.

"The objective was to provide a modern British Asian drama that wasn't dumbed down, that reflected...

'Cloud 9' stars celebrate Holi festival in special episode
The cast of Cloud 9 are celebrating 'Holi' (Festival of Colours) with a special episode.

The UK's first British Asian daily soap featuring a multicultural cast, Cloud 9 aims to represent the cultural experience of a new generation of British Asians.

The show's viewership has grown steadily since the pioneering series was first launched in January 2013.

Lead actor Valmike Rampersad, who plays Ajay, told Digital Spy why he first became interested in being a part of the ground-breaking series.

"I found it refreshing, because while it happens to be an Asian cast it's a very British drama. Nothing about it felt that it was a British Asian TV series," he explained.

"There are refreshing storylines, refreshing characters, a character who speaks like me, who doesn't have some sort of dumbed down Asian accent, who's educated - which is rare in Asian television - and not driving a taxi and I'm not a terrorist.

Niki Walia, Rakhee Thakrar, Valmike Rampersad, Johnny Sachon, and Amir Jardan in Cloud 9 (2013)
The first British-Asian soap Cloud 9 has launched in the UK. Marketed as the 'first of its kind' weekday drama series, the series is aimed at engaging a second and third generation British-Asian audience. Producer-Director Gunjan Hazarika told Digital Spy: "Being in production over the last several years, I sensed a void within the South Asian entertainment space, which I can say today is being filled by Cloud 9. "Existing offerings across channels and the production standards have not been on par with mainstream, which always challenged my own talent. Zing has provided me with a platform to showcase this today. If you're a person that loves life, the ups, the downs, the people you meet and your surroundings, then you will absolutely love Cloud 9." Composer Rishi Rich, who (more)...
