Movies have always had a way of connecting people and communities, as well as challenging the typical norms of society. While everyone loves a classic rom-com, things go up a notch when a movie tries to break barriers by telling stories that, in one way or another, push against societal taboos, especially when it comes to love, acceptance, and identity.
Roshan Sethi’s A Nice Indian Boy is such a movie that promises to bring a refreshing take on romance by exploring a same-sex relationship, that too with a mix of traditional Indian family values. With changing times, more and more filmmakers have embraced such storylines.

Set and shot in his hometown of Syracuse, New York, with family members even making cameos, “Plainclothes” is clearly very personal to writer/director Carmen Emmi. It’s much more than its plot synopsis, which tells of a 1990s period piece about an undercover police officer luring gay men into the crime of indecent exposure. In reality, “Plainclothes” is a meditation on the process of accepting oneself even as society and loved ones deem it wrong.
English actor Tom Blyth, most recognizable from the MGM+ series “Billy the Kid” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” impresses as Lucas, the cop. Blythe’s performance is an interior one, where what Lucas does is not as important as how he feels inside. Capturing that is a special gift and Blyth delivers. Early on, it’s obvious that Lucas compartmentalizes his own desires with ease while performing his job.

It didn’t take much for Russell Tovey to connect with “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbird’ star Tom Blyth. The actors first met on Zoom before filming writer-director Carmen Emmi’s gay indie drama “Plainclothes.”
“Instantly I was just like, ‘This guy’s the real deal,’” Tovey says on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “He’s a Brit and I’m a Brit and we’re both out there doing our thing. I was so charmed and excited to work with him and he is a real actor, and he’s got an absolute passion for independent film. He is all about honesty and authenticity in telling the story, and that’s what I’m for. The relationship between those two and their connection and their chemistry is fundamental to this story working.”

Director Andrew Haigh On All Of Us Strangers And Winning Empire’s Best Movie 2024: “This Is So Cool”
We knew from the moment we first saw All Of Us Strangers all the way back in January that Andrew Haigh's film, a haunting queer romance centred around Andrew Scott's isolated writer Adam and the connection he makes with Paul Mescal's sad-eyed drifter Harry, was special. Is it a ghost story? A fever dream? A tangible construct formed of a grieving man's subconscious? We didn't — and still don't truly — know, but by God we felt every exquisite moment of its magnetising melancholy, its smouldering sensuality. So much so that when we came to write Empire's 'Best Movies Of 2024 (So Far)' list in June, Haigh's movie sat comfortably in podium place on the list. And now, a full twelve months since the movie first released stateside, All Of Us Strangers has taken root even deeper in our hearts — and soared right to the top of our Best Movies Of 2024 list.

Whether they know it or not, statistically everyone who saw a film released in 2022 knows the work of Bashir Salahuddin — or, as he was known in the year’s #2 movie Top Gun: Maverick, Navy Warrant Officer Bernie “Hondo” Coleman. But comedy fans have been steeping in Salahuddin’s career for a decade. He was a writer and sometime performer on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon before his acting career took off with roles like Malik in HBO’s dramedy Looking, Netflix’s prematurely canceled Glow and the scripted true-crime series The Dropout, among many others.
You may also know Salahuddin as the headliner of his own shows: with Diallo Riddle, Salahuddin co-created the Soul Train spoof Sherman’s Showcase, in which he played the titular variety show host Sherman McDaniel; and South Side, a Max import from Comedy Central that depicts the eponymous Chicago neighborhood — of which Salahuddin is a...

The Young and the Restless spoilers for Wednesday, September 18, shock absolutely no one when Victor effortlessly lies to the love of his life, “my baby,” the woman he cherishes above all others—his wife, Nikki.
Looking Out For You
Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) doesn’t like the idea of Victor (Eric Braeden) making Lily (Christel Khalil) think they are working together to get Billy (Jason Thompson) out of Abbott-Chancellor so that she can take over when, in reality, Victor plans to kick Lily to the curb and install Nikki in her position, instead.
Victor, how to put this…doesn’t care what Nikki thinks. He loves her so much that he knows what’s best for Nikki better than she does. She thinks they should be upfront with Lily. But that’s because she’s a naive, uneducated, alcoholic former stripper. Who will make an excellent CEO of Chancellor.

Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short will stick around the Arconia as Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” has scored a Season 5 renewal – and writing for the next mystery is already underway.
“We’ve been keeping that a secret for about a week and a half now. It’s very exciting,” showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap in an interview Wednesday. “We’ve been in the writers room for Season 5 for two weeks now. So it’s pretty fast and we’re already in.”
Season 5, which will consist of another 10 episodes, comes as the comedy series is in the middle of its star-studded fourth season. For Season 4, the trio is drawn to Hollywood where their true crime podcast is being turned into a movie while also looking to solve the murder of Charles’ stunt double Sazz Pataki.

The “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 premiere solved the mystery of where Charles Haden-Savage’s stunt double Sazz Pataki’s (Jane Lynch) body disappeared to following her death by sniper in the Season 3 finale.
In the final minutes of the episode, Charles, Mabel and Oliver discovered that Sazz’s body was brought down to the basement of the Arconia and thrown in an incinerator, with one of her metal joints from Bulgaria left behind.
“It’s about as dark as we’ve ever gone on the show, and it needed to be,” showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap. “The episode is structured in a way that the audience has a sense about something that our trio doesn’t. We needed to give the trio, and mainly Charles, a sense that something’s not right… And finally...

It’s safe to say a lot of people had a lot of problems with the switch from HBO Max to Max, but there was at least one upside to the streaming shakeup. Now, it’s easier than ever to find the excellent queer stories floating around Warner Bros. Discovery’s platform.
During its lifespan, HBO Max never had an LGBTQ tag to filter its offerings and help subscribers find stories about the queer community more easily: a surprising move for a streamer named after the channel that brought us boundary-breaking works like “Six Feet Under” and the miniseries adaptation of “Angels in America.” That’s been remedied on Max, which features an “LGBTQ+ Voices” collection. You do have to scroll quite far down the homepage to find it in the collections carousel, but when you do, it makes searching for the queer films and shows on the streamer considerably easier.

Diane Keaton has impressed the audience with remarkable performances in timeless classics like The Godfather, Manhattan, and Reds. She has quite the collection of awards to her name including some very prestigious ones and why wouldn’t she? She’s Diane Keaton, after all. Diane Keaton redefined the modern heroine in cinema and brought absolute authenticity to every character she set out to conquer.
A still from The Godfather (1972) | Paramount Pictures
One of the finest works of Diane Keaton’s career so far has got to be the 1977 film, Annie Hall, where she played the titular character. The actress’ performance was so raw and well-received that she went on to win her first and only Academy Award. However, she starred in yet another brilliant film in the same year that was equally deserving of the nomination and many fans believe that she should’ve won an Oscar for this film instead.

With the 2024 Tony Awards a few weeks away and the record-breaking Broadway run of “Merrily We Roll Along” coming to a close in a little over a month, three-time Tony nominee Jonathan Groff is looking back on the roles that shaped this first stage in his career. In an interview in The New Yorker, Groff recalled the impact performing in the visually-stunning and narratively-meta film “The Matrix Resurrections” had on his psyche.
“Getting to play Agent Smith really unlocked rage inside of me that I didn’t know was there,” Groff said. “That’s helped me so much with ‘Merrily,’ particularly in the first act. Learning the kung fu was, like, months of fight training. They called me the Savage, because I was so into it. We were shooting a big fight sequence with Keanu, and, after the first few takes, I remember Lana [Wachowski] at the monitor, like, ‘Jonathan, come over here.

Our favorite Arconia residents are back for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4, except this time, they’re heading to Hollywood.
Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin reprise their respective roles as a trio of amateur podcasting sleuths who try to solve the shocking Season 3 finale surrounding Charles’ (Martin) stunt double and friend Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch).
Per the official season synopsis, “Questioning whether she or Charles was the intended victim, their investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast. As Charles, Oliver, and Mabel race back to New York, they embark on an even more epic journey — traversing their building’s courtyard to delve into the twisted lives of the Arconia’s West Tower residents.”
Meryl Streep and Da’Vine Joy Randolph also reprise their roles, along with new season stars Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria,...

Eureka Classics have done it again and have now released the first 4K restoration copy of the original 1927 The Cat and the Canary, available for the first time on blu-ray. Considering how many prestigious silent classics have been lost forever, it is quite a treat to sit through the full 86 minutes that have been meticulous preserved of what really is a prototype of its kind. One might consider the dark house comedy-thriller a rare beast, but it was extremely popular in its day, kicked off by this hugely popular silent, made just nine months before the release of the very first feature-length talking picture, The Jazz Singer.
Looking at The Cat and the Canary today, it is emblematic of everything we know about silent cinema, with its comic intertitles, wide-eyed acting and stereotypes, but viewed more seriously it was a hugely influential title.

Is one renaissance man about to take on another? Apparently so, as IndieWire has confirmed that Andrew Haigh has been tapped to helm a highly anticipated adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s lauded 2017 biography of Leonardo Da Vinci. Paramount had initially won the film rights when the book was first released and even cast the world’s 2nd most famous Leonardo, Di Caprio, in the lead role. Unfortunately, its version eventually went into turnaround allowing Universal to swoop in (perhaps with the use of Da Vinci’s ornithopter) and create a fresh package with Haigh. Initially it was announced that Christopher Hampton would be scripting the piece, but with Haigh now onboard, Universal looks to be giving him full creative oversight, perhaps in an effort to summon the spirit of Da Vinci himself.

Universal Pictures has found its director for the high-priority Leonardo da Vinci film. “All of Us Strangers” helmer Andrew Haigh has signed on to direct and adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography of the Renaissance man.
Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Isaacson’s book became one of the hottest literary properties when it hit the market in 2017. At the time, Universal was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio for years before putting it in turnaround. Universal quietly picked it up last year. The runaway bestseller connects da Vinci’s transcendent art, which includes the Mona Lisa painting hanging in the Louvre, to his trailblazing science — and shows how his genius was driven by an insatiable curiosity, careful observation and a whimsical imagination. The Italian icon lived from 1452-1519 during the height of the Renaissance,...
