On the Friday, January 24 episode of The Bold and the Beautiful, Li burst into tears. She found out that Jack isn’t Luna’s father. Poppy and Jack were telling the truth all along. Li was open to mending her broken relationship with Poppy, but it probably won’t last.
Do You Forgive Me?
Li (Naomi Matsuda) had some explaining to do during Friday’s episode. She realized the paternity test was negative. Jack (Ted King) isn’t Luna’s (Lisa Yamada) father, leaving this mystery wide open. Li was convinced for decades that Poppy (Romy Park) meddled with her marriage. It was bad enough when Jack had a hot affair with supervillain Sheila (Kimberlin Brown). Who knows who else he could’ve slept with?
Li did something that most characters refuse to do on B&b. She apologized to Poppy for speaking poorly about her for years. Li slammed...

Exclusive: Indie studio Wiip has optioned Amanda Eyre Ward’s 2022 novel The Lifeguards. In Sue Tenney’s followup to the Netflix hit Virgin River, which she developed and served as executive producer/showrunner on for four seasons, she will tackle The Lifeguard‘s TV adaptation with fellow former Virgin River writer-producer Amy Palmer Robertson for what the duo are promising to be “a sexy, soapy, domestic suspense series.”
Combining three mothers’ points of view in a narrative tale with commentary from neighborhood listservs, secret text messages, and police reports, The Lifeguards, is both a story about the secrets we tell to protect the ones we love, and a riveting novel of suspense filled with half-truths and betrayals, fierce love and complicated friendships, and the loss of innocence on one hot summer night.
“The mothers and teenage sons of The Lifeguards are close to my heart,” Ward said. “From the moment...

As roughly 100 musicians dine on pasta, ramen, and cannabis-infused bento boxes under a massive tent in DJ Jazzy Jeff’s backyard, the hip-hop pioneer announces that the night’s main event is about to begin. He had invited artists across music mediums and generations – including De La Soul’s Posdnous and Maseo, The Roots’ Black Thought, and Jay-Z’s sound engineer Young Guru – to spend three days camped out around his sprawling Delaware estate for his annual Playlist Retreat, resuming for the first time since 2019 after a pandemic hiatus. Byte Barrel is trying something new after giving Lovecraft fans some love with the Forgive Me Father series. The developer has announced a vampire-themed first-person shooter in Trust, which will be coming to Steam. The game was revealed during Steam’s Boomstock 2024 event, and will feature immersive elements, comic-style graphics, lots of blood, and “surprisingly stylish patrol units.”
In Trust, you play as a vampire who has awakened from a centuries-long sleep. The world you knew is long gone. Discovering the truth about the immense power that vampire blood offers changed the course of the war between humanity and creatures of the night. Unfortunately, your kind was not on the winning side in this war. As a result, blood reactors and batteries from vampire hearts began generating electricity for entire cities, powering cars, everyday objects, as well as deadly weapons. Now, you’re out to change that.

The films Dutch director Cyrus Frisch has made thus far are controversial, erratic and politically engaged. With the recent re-release of his films Dazzle (original title: Oogverblindend), Blackwater Fever, and Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me It Would Become This Bad in Afghanistan on Vimeo On Demand, it is a good time to get (re-)acquainted with his work. After a number of short films and television programs with which he made a name for himself, he made his feature film debut in 2001 with Forgive Me. Forgive Me is one of the most challenging films I have seen recently. But like any of Frisch's films, it invites you to look deeper. In Forgive Me, Frisch deliberately pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable. He was alarmed...

Sunday brought a close to the 10th Life Is Beautiful music festival in Las Vegas, and with it the end of the summer festival season. Life Is Beautiful, which has taken place in the city every year for the past decade (save for a pandemic-related 2020 cancellation), brought tens of thousands of concertgoers downtown, many in the psychedelic and post-Y2K fashion that’s been so common at festivals for the past several years, though this time with a fair amount of Barbie influence, too.

“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” scene-stealer Richard E. Grant has been a favorite of critics for his role as a down-on-his-luck grifter, but in January Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) started building what may be unstoppable momentum in the Best Supporting Actor race, winning the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award and SAG Award for his performance as a pianist facing racism in the Jim Crow South. But is he really unstoppable? We think Grant could beat him at the BAFTAs.
As of this writing Grant gets leading odds of 17/5, and he’s predicted to win by five of the six Expert journalists we have polled thus far: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Adnan Virk.

Mahershala Ali is comfortably out front to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for “Green Book” after his wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. But there remains a big unanswered question about this race: will the academy want to reward him again so soon? It has been just two years since he won for “Moonlight.” That’s not unprecedented, of course, but you have to go back decades to find actors who claimed two Oscars so quickly.
No one has won multiple acting Oscars in two years or less in any category since Tom Hanks went back-to-back in the Best Actor race: “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994) — that’s 24 years ago. You have to go back a lot farther than that to find such a quick repeat specifically in the Best Supporting Actor race. It happened to Jason Robards 41 years ago when he won two in a...

In Fox Searchlight’s dramedy Can You Ever Forgive Me?, comedy star Melissa McCarthy turns another corner raising her drama game as late curmudgeon and celebrity biographer Lee Israel who when her career went south, she went criminal selling off forged author letters.
Today at Deadline’s Contenders in New York, director Marielle Heller described the challenges of recreating 1991 in the Big Apple, and how such artsy neighborhoods were becoming rare.
“I was trying to capture a New York that is lost, a time when artists lived in New York and bookstores were a really exciting prospect. We were trying to capture lightning in a bottle before it disappeared.” And disappear it did. There were literally bookstores that the production wanted to use as locations that went out of business.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards announced their nominations on November 16, and “Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed” and “You Were Never Really Here” cleaned up with four bids apiece, including Best Feature. But the most nominated film of the year, “We the Animals” with five, isn’t up for that top award. See the complete list of nominations here.
“Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed” and “Never Really Here” are joined in the top category by “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Leave No Trace,” which have three total noms apiece. We swear, this is the first photo of Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy playing a world famous celebrity forger. Fox Searchlight released a new still from the upcoming “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” on Wednesday night, that sees McCarthy play biographer and notorious faker Lee Israel. Israel was a successful biographer during her heyday in the ’70s and ’80s, writing tomes on cosmetics empress Estée Lauder and actress Tallulah Bankhead. Her career stagnated in the years following, with a resurgence in the ’90s after unearthing never-seen letters from icons like Dorothy Parker and Noël Coward. Except they weren’t from Parker or Coward.

Animated, eccentric, and immensely talented, they just don’t make many like Jackie Hoffman. The hilarious character actress received her first Emmy nomination this year, for playing Mamacita in “Feud: Bette and Joan,” but she lost the statue to Laura Dern, who won for HBO’s smash hit murder mystery, “Big Little Lies.” Hoffman’s honest response when Dern’s name was announced caught many viewers off guard. Rather than delivering the placid, emotionless facade most losers adopt, Hoffman can be seen yelling “Damn it!” in her reaction shot. The Twitter rant that followed is even more hilarious.
“Broadway is dimming the lights,” she wrote. Hoffman is beloved by Broadway fans, having starred in 2002’s “Hairspray,” “Xanadu,” and “The Addams Family.” She first made waves onscreen in “Kissing Jessica Stein,” as the brassy best friend to Jennifer Westfeldt’s Jessica. As I placed the final piece of the puzzle into the floppy copy of The Samurnauts: Curse of the Dreadnuts #4 (ironically it was an ad for ComicMix, what synergy!) a fleeting thought tripped me up. Throughout the production process of creating Curse, Unshaven Comics has faced one teeny-tiny nagging question from a few people very close to our hearts. This single question – phrased and rephrased in both passive-aggressive and totally-aggro ways has come to represent a choke point for me and my l’il studio.
“When are you going to stop this?”
For the sake of clarity? The question was posed to us by close family members – none of whom share room and board with us. All three Unshaven Lads are beyond lucky to have wives (and children) who are always fully in-support of our indie comic dreams; so long as we work hard to be good husbands and dads…...

So, spoiler alert. The comic industry as we know it is going to die. Well, according to Dan Didio and Jim Lee it is. At the San Diego Comic Con – which I clearly didn’t attend because I already knew comics were dying – the DC honchos all but shook their rain sticks at the assembled retailers to eulogize the industry before revealing how they would save it.
Forgive me. You no doubt heard the thundering cacophony of my right eyebrow arching high on my face at a speed worthy of Barry Allen. The speed at which it jutted there clearly broke the sound barrier in a reflex akin only to those meta-humans with the ability to transcend space and time.
There’s literally too much to unpack from all they blabbed on about for me to fit in a single column. And rather than present evidence how the comic industry isn’t dying at all,...

Jada Pinkett Smith made it clear on Friday morning she is not a fan of the new film about her close friend, the late rapper Tupac Shakur.
In a series of tweets, Smith called All Eyez on Me, starring newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr., "deeply hurtful."
"Forgive me ... my relationship to Pac is too precious to me for the scenes in All Eyez On Me to stand as truth," Smith began. "Pac never read me that poem. I didn't know that poem existed until it was printed in his book."
Smith is played by Kat Graham in Benny Boom’s biopic. The actual Shakur would have turned 46 on Friday.

Benny Boom’s Tupac Shakur biopic, All Eyez On Me, opened this weekend to tepid reviews, with critics suggesting that the film does little to capture the drama and heights of Shakur’s life and career. Now, you can add Shakur’s old friend, Jada Pinkett Smith, and long-time admirer, 50 Cent, to the list of people disappointed in the film; both got on social media today to call out the movie for its portrayal of the rap legend’s life.
Pinkett Smith went into extensive detail with her critiques, pointing out a number of scenes between her and Shakur that she says simply didn’t happen:

The negativity surrounding the Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me continues as Tupac's long-time pal Jada Pinkett Smith bashes the movie's portrayal of their friendship. The biopic has been criticized for being too surface level and for not digging into what made Tupac who he really was. Movieweb's Julian Roman calls the movie a "Wikipedia biopic," while declaring that the movie lacks depth. In other words, long time fans of 'Pac aren't going to learn anything new unless its fabricated', which unfortunately was the case for life long friend of Tupac, Pinkett Smith.
Pinkett Smith took to Twitter to air her grievances over her portrayal in All Eyez on Me. Pinkett explains.
"The reimagining of my relationship with Pac has been deeply hurtful."
Further in Pinkett Smith's tweet storm this morning she goes on to correct some of the fallacies depicted in the biopic. Read what she had to say below.

Jada Pinkett Smith is not happy with the way her relationship to Tupac Shakur is depicted in the new biopic about the late iconic rapper, All Eyez on Me. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have set aside the November 15, 2019 release date for their upcoming holiday comedy entitled Margie Claus, which has Melissa McCarthy set to star and produce, while co-writing the script. The actress' husband Ben Falcone will direct from a script he and Melissa McCarthy co-wrote with their Groundlings collaborator Damon Jones. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone will both produce through their On the Day production company.
Deadline reports that the story is set on Christmas Eve, when Santa Claus goes mysteriously missing. Margie Claus (Melissa McCarthy) is then forced to go on a rescue mission to find him, leaving the North Pole for the first time in years. This report claims New Line is hoping this movie could have the same sort of success as their 2003 holiday classic Elf, which took in over $220 million at the global box office and also spawned a Broadway musical hit.

Forgive me, Constant Reader, but I am still somewhat hungover from my Eisner Awards weekend. As evidence, I tell you that I have the new issue of one of my favorite titles, Bitch Planet, in my apartment, but I have not yet read it.

So this week, I plan to talk about something that is not comics, but comics-adjacent, American Gods, the new series on Starz based on the novel by Neil Gaiman.
My colleagues in this space, Emily Whitten and Mindy Newell, have already written about the great cast and the tight scripting. I want to talk about some aspects of the show that are more ephemeral.
I haven’t read American Gods since it was published in 2001, but I remember being knocked out by it. The story of a war was not that unusual,...

After years in development, it looks like viewers will finally get to see a darkly comedic take on the world of puppets in The Happytime Murders. Taking place in a world where puppets and humans live together, the film will feature a grisly murder mystery that must be solved by a pair of detectives, one human and one puppet. The movie is now finally moving forward with Melissa McCarthy set to star and produce, Brian Henson (son of the legendary Jim Henson) on board as the director, and filming expected to begin this August.

All dogs are armed with a powerful weapon — guilty eyes.
It’s the face canines break out when you scold them for a house training accident or shoe shredding. Cowering to make themselves a bit smaller, they flash you those big, brimming, upward cast eyes that seem to scream “Forgive Me!”
Turns out this is an old trick.
According to a recent Psychology Today article by Nathan H. Lents, a molecular biologist with the City University of New York, this expression can be traced back to a dog’s ancestor: the wolf.

Vicky McClure and Morven Christie were the highlights of The Replacement’s melodramatic, soap-like finale…
This review contains spoilers.
Praise be for the three-parter. Even when the narrative wheels come off, as they did in spectacular fashion in The Replacement’s ludicrously overblown finale, you’re still quids-in when it comes to your time investment. A dodgy last hour after two decent instalments is forgivable, especially when it’s all so bonkers you can’t look away.
Episode three put pay to all the subtle ambiguity over who was really the crazy one and vindicated our girl Ellen by exposing Paula not only as Kay’s killer but also as the villain from the Saw films. The blue-eyed monster hatched a plan so complicated that even after watching the episode twice and taking notes each time, I could still use a steer on what actually happened.

Numbers don’t lie. A recent study found female filmmakers remain “grossly underrepresented” when it comes to directing opportunities, and there is no arena in which that is more apparent than Hollywood’s own studio system. As The Wrap recently noted, “of the 149 movies currently slated for a wide release from the six legacy studios over the next three years, only 12 have female directors. That means a whopping 92 percent of the major motion pictures due in theaters through the end of 2019 will be helmed by men.”
That number only includes studio features from the big six, not speciality arms like Fox Searchlight, Sony Pictures Classics, or Focus Features. However, adding those more indie-minded distributors (which are often heavy on festival acquisitions) doesn’t paint a much rosier picture. Over the course of 2017 and 2018, only 24 films directed by women will hit theaters care of a Hollywood studio, and despite continued attention...
