Ignore the haters - they've never picked up a camera and shot anything in their lives. Most are atheists and hate faith-based anything.
The powerful faith element that drives these two stories is undeniable. Don't watch if you're allergic to Christ.
It's true that this movie does pretty much follow the Braveheart formula. However, this movie includes some elements, such as the cinematography and the incredibly graphic battle scenes (one reviewer likened it to Gladiator, "only better"), that are spectacular in itself. Overall, a great movie that I highly recommend.
BEST Historical Faith Film in the Past 30 Years. To me, this is a film you see once and never again. It is brutal, graphic, and I personally found it triggering my freedom and Civil Rights were given only a few years ago. And it really does touch you that deeply too, and whether you are a man and end up feeling Samuel's freedom, you don't leave the film without being the least bit scathed. Which is why I say it is worth seeing. Cuba surely gives an award worthy performance which thinking about makes my breaths shallow and eyes begin to water. In a perfect world, this should have won an Oscar, but for its faith content.
My rating: Solid A.
Love the story of John Newton who is man with a strong conviction, will-power and obviously blessed with exceptional song-writing ability but just wants to get to his home after fulfilling his work duties, but gets caught up in a situation that brings him to God. An unfortunate event after the other and he finds himself tumbling down a spiral.
The main characters have been played extremely well, with obvious mention to the main antagonist a slave hunter played by William Sadler. As they say, a good villain makes you hate them to the core and our actor does the job really well
My only nitpick would be the occasional corny dialogues.
9/10.
The opening scene is spellbinding of the slave escape with Cuba Gooding, Jr and his family. Perfect cast, perfect soundtrack, perfect script by Tim Chey.
Every line moves the plot forward and is memorable. The music is gorgeous. The acting is impeccable. Wonderfully shot by Dean Cundey ("Back to the Future" Jurassic Park")
I will not write about the plot here, because many people already did this; I will only say for people that never watched this movie, that it deserves to be watched.
