Beautifully shot and well-acted

The chemistry that Billy Gardell finds with this film's entire cast, despite his character's flaws and addictions openly on display, is incredible. Feels like a theatrical production in the best way given the caliber of acting, blocking, and interplay between static and dynamic camera movement. Richard Zelniker has done something special with this one! The gritty Vegas atmosphere is well-invited by the opening fire sequence and the claustrophobic pit scenes. The pacing is careful but engaging and it feels like we're glimpsing something we shouldn't as Gardell spirals down the proverbial vortex. Overall great watch!

What a cool, unique movie!

The performances were award worthy. The entire cast was completely dialed in. After every great scene, the next actor would be like, "hold my beer". Another thing of note was the style of the film. It was unlike anything I have ever seen. This Birdman like single shot kept you engaged throughout. I also have to compliment the composer. The jazzy score was like its own character as it helped dictate the tone of the movie. And last but definitely not least, the lead Billy Gardell. Drama is in his blood, and I hope the industry sees this hidden talent. He can carry a film and although his character is super flawed, you can't help but like the guy and cheer for his redemption. Check out this movie, you won't be disappointed!

Don't Miss This Film In Theaters Playing In Theaters Now

I was engaged from the first second. A card with text came up with the historical MGM Grand fire information. 1980. Vegas. Followed by enchanting music that was mesmerizing as credits started coming up, then followed by a tableau of shots that kept me on the edge of my seat. Such a unique and unusual way to keep the audience engaged from the start to finish. A character-driven movie that resembled the best of a stage play with the immediacy of a deeply cinematic tone seen through a camera that is basically a fly on the wall in a mostly one room set, a slots room where the compulsive gambler, Billy Gardell plays and hosts a bunch of wacky folks who come and go. Characters in equal parts dangerous, amusing, strange, eccentric and entertaining there was never a dull moment. The performances were across the board amazing! The music, the design, and the hint of a karmic story that brings the Southern Paiute nation into the hands of a supernatural and mystical power that drives the question of what really happened at the MGM Grand that night... and I'll say no more. Don't miss this movie in the theater playing currently in LA. I saw the movie at the premiere and was so happy I went. Don't miss it at Laemmle's NOHO 7.

High Stakes!

All bets aside, Billy G and Richard Z are a dynamic duo in "The Vortex." A comedian fueled with gambling addiction has the opportunity of a lifetime to win big or save his soul. The timeline takes place at the MGM Grand during the 80's (true story). WHAT AN EERIE OPENING, BUT YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING TILL THE END. Must watch. The writing style reminds me of what Kubrick did in the "The Killing." The introduction to each character relationship with Pete (Billy G), amplifies while gambling on the slots machine. You have friends from the casino, Love interest, loan shark, the loan sharks muscle, and native spirit (is she real or not?).

Moody, tension-filled drama kept me riveted

Loved this film from Richard Zelniker - from the opening moments you know you're in for a tense, nail-biting ride. The atmosphere is genuine 1980s Vegas gritty, dark, menacing and totally genuine. Gardell is winning as the charming Pete; even as he's sucked down into his self-made chaos, you can see why everyone is on his side and you root for him the whole way. The cast of characters are all engaging in different ways - this is no one-trick movie - and keep the tension building until the very very last frame. Stunning visuals, snappy writing, and taut, energetic direction from Zelniker - The Vortex pulls you in in all the best ways.

Awesome movie

I think this movie was super cool as it captured the vintage 80s Vegas style very well! While watching this movie, you will feel a strong connection with every character you meet, as they all have interesting and attention-grabbing personalities. For me, I felt the strongest connection with the main character, Pete (Billy Gardell). I loved the way he told his stories and how deep down, he's a genuine dude. Also, the camera work and music was awesome. It was very creative and it really fit the story. Lastly, the ending will keep you on the edge of your seat! I highly recommend for everyone to see it as I enjoyed it a lot.

Great job to the filmmakers!

Just got out a limited release screening for this film! Give it a spin and you can just get lucky! Awesome casting and direction. This film speaks to independent filmmaking and it has some great writing overall. It's really a must-see indy for those interested in character-driven stories and Billy G crushes the performance. He keeps us engaged and into it the whole way. Definitely will get a wider audience as it continues to build theaters. It's a must watch for those into re-living the period casino life with all the chaos that entailed for years Definitely consider taking a trip to go see this film when it comes to a city near you soon.

Great performance and an amazing recreation of 1980 Las Vegas

I went to see The Vortex during its limited run in Los Angeles not realizing the story would play out against the backdrop of the 1980 MGM Grand Hotel fire in Las Vegas, but I left very impressed with the execution by Richard Zelniker and the performance by Billy Gardell.

Zelniker presents a narrative that swirls with an intoxicatingly dizzying effect, telling a cautionary tale of a comedian, Pete, played by Gardell, struggling with gambling debt and admittedly in too deep with underworld associate and friend, Jimmy, played by Christopher Titus. The complicated dance that plays out from the beginning as Jimmy comes to collect is heightened by the passage of time as well as the eerie occurrences which give way to many jackpots throughout the night, spurred by repeat visits from a Paiute woman (Emily Alabi) on the casino floor. As Pete's desperation increases, the Steadicam shots seem faster, creating a vortex-like effect from which the film draws its name, only slowing as he addresses his shortcomings through conversations with other casino patrons and attempts to take control of his fate.

The film's commitment in its depiction of characters searching for redemption through gambling provides the a near-perfect level of dissonance and in turn evokes a sinking feeling through the last act.

The picture gives me hope that independent film will live on with convincingly good quality and is proof that period pieces are possible at any level. I believe it to be a must-see for audiences seeking heavy handed character-driven films.

Fantastic Film

This is a Gambling Parable that brings us to contemplate the juxtaposition between the material world and the spiritual. At the crossroads is a gambling addict, a washed up 1980s classic Las Vegas comedian, who must make what will probably be the most important decision of his life. The audience is a fly on the wall as we become empaths, watching eccentric characters interact with Pete, played by Billy Gardell. Director Richard Zelniker takes us on a vicarious adventure, one the main character carries as his self-perpetuating loop of intense focus and addiction leads to an unpredictable outcome. Well done!

A Refreshing Take

If you're looking for something different and unique to cleanse your movie palate, look no further than, "The Vortex".

Co-written and directed by Richard Zelniker, this "Birdman" meets "The Gambler" takes us through a substory to the infamous MGM Grand fire of 1980 in Las Vegas.

Starring Billy Gardell as Pete, a down on his luck standup comedian with an un-ruly gambling addiction who thinks all his debt/problems can be solved with one pull of slot machine lever.

This film hooks you from the get go with its eerie ambience and lonesome tone right out the gate. Looming in our thoughts are the inevitable and catastrophic outcome we know of the fires that took the lives of 87 people and injured over 700.

The anticipation only builds not knowing where this story will take us with only just a few hours before the devastation. The intensity builds like the inferno that's coming with each passing character that engages Pete on the slots. Pete's a very likable guy but likes alone won't save him with the people he's mixed up with. With each coin inserted and crank of a lever, Pete's time and money is running out. Will his luck run out, too?

I highly recommend this movie if you appreciate good writing, swiftly flowing and moving cinematography, a beautifully composed score and great acting. (Seriously, every actor in this movie crushed it!).

Zelniker delivers a delight where indie films are much needed during these unforeseen times in the entertainment industry. It's an example of how to make an indie film that's rich with creativity and non-conformity. We desperately need more films of this structure and nature for the industry to thrive. Hopefully "The Vortex" will influence other filmmakers to go all in and lay their cards out there for something they believe in.

So follow my suit and check out, "The Vortex". It's a jackpot!

Loved this!

Fantastic and worthy escape by a new generation of filmmakers! Richard Zelniker's The Vortex (2025) is a taut, 80-minute character study set in a Las Vegas casino's backroom on the eve of the 1980 MGM Grand fire. Billy Gardell delivers a compelling performance as Pete, a down-on-his-luck comedian ensnared by gambling addiction and mounting debts. The film's kinetic camera work and jazzy score mirror Pete's escalating desperation. Interactions with a diverse cast, including Emily Alabi's enigmatic cleaner and Azita Ghanizada's Shirin B., deepen the narrative, exploring themes of addiction, redemption, and the human cost of vice. Gardell's portrayal marks a significant departure from his comedic roots, showcasing his dramatic range. The Vortex is a haunting, intimate portrayal of a man on the brink.

An unexpected film worth your time.

As I was searching for something to watch I happened to stumble upon "The Vortex". Since I am a fan of Billy Gardell's work (Mike & Molly / Bob Hears Abishola) and films based in Las Vegas I rented it not knowing a lot going in about the film itself. Once the film was done, I was both really glad I watched the film and wanted to recommend others to find this film out (I watched in on Comcast Xfinity, however I do believe it is available wherever you can rent / buy films).

I do not want to give spoilers, however I do want to give some shoutouts. Billy Gardell was really good in this role. While there are comedic elements, he plays the lead role of Pete with depth and complexities that anyone who knows someone like him can truly relate to (and if not, the viewer understands exactly where Pete is at this stage of his life. It was great to see Christopher Titus in a non-comedic role. I hope based on this performance; he gets more opportunities to play this type of character again. The rest of the supporting cast really did their part to give weight to Pete's situation and have their own character arcs.

At a very brisk 80 minutes, the film flew by tightly directed by Richard Zelniker. It felt like everything had a purpose that was on screen. It has a nice old school jazz score to go with the film that made you feel that you were in an old school Vegas Lounge back in the day.

In summary if you want to see a really good film that is quite honestly different than most films made today give "The Vortex" a watch, when it is over I believe you will have enjoyed your time with these characters.

My Favorite Movie I've Seen This Year!

I LOVED this movie! It delves into relationships, addiction, and redemption in a way that feels both intimate and thrilling. The opening of the film immediately caught my attention as I found myself eager to know what was coming next. The unique setting of mostly taking place in one room created a sense of closeness allowing me feel more connected to the characters, especially Pete. As the story unfolded, I found myself rooting for Pete, hoping he would hit that jackpot. I was fully engrossed in each characters story finding them all relatable in one way or another. If you're looking for a film that will not only keep you on the edge of your seat but also immerse you in its characters' lives, making you feel like a part of their struggles, this is the one for you!

Great Execution

Richard Zelniker takes a bold swing with this minimalist portrait of a deeply wounded gambling addict - and it pays off. Tackling such emotionally fraught subject matter is no small feat, but what makes this film especially daring is the way it's executed. Zelniker leans into long takes not as a stylistic flourish, but as a way to immerse us in the character's unraveling world, capturing the relentless tension of the casino and the claustrophobia of addiction. The result is a film that's both gripping and haunting. I found myself on edge throughout, fully engaged, and constantly curious where it would go next. A gutsy and impressive piece of work. Bravo!

Incredible character development

Zelniker is able to develop characters, build suspense, all while his protagonist stays in the same one spot. He displays the depth of each character, their desires, their regrets, their fears, all while demonstrating how the world of gambling has left a scar on their lives. Billy Gardell is astounding in his ability to bounce between shrink, comedian, and victim. One of my favorite aspects was the use of sound through the coins, slot machines, and water drops during the fire. The opening images truly demonstrate the calm that preceded the deadly fire. Phenomenal cast, storyline, dialogue, and directing!

SCARED MONEY, DON'T MAKE NO MONEY!!

Loved 'The Vortex' from start to finish! Amazing casting and directing in an awesome throw back 1980's casino! Billy G put on a phenomenal performance. This is a must go see for any casino lover. Great cast!

The cast was so good, and the lead actor was so understated but so real and present. I really believed these characters, their needs , desires and human condition. And the way it was filmed. The style for the story was perfect. It had texture to it. It was so engaging from the get go. And a big nod to the direction, the way the director let these actors play. A gem of an Indie. Billy Gardell should win awards for his betrayal of this stand up comic who has a gambling addiction. It's so not a stereotypical performance, it's nuanced, heart filled and honest. There is no showing or pushing in his performance. I believe him fully. So good.

Brilliant acting and direction

In an era of hollow super hero movies and mindless filmmaking , The Vortex is a much needed breath of fresh air. Kudos to the director for delivering such a brilliant artistic piece.

The movie grabs you from the start, with its haunting sound, tone and imagery and slowly introduces you to a world of dark and intriguing characters. Gardell shines in this film, but it's also the strength of the ensemble that really helps carry the movie. Zelniker allows the scenes to breathe and (the use of the oner scene(s)/camera work adds another skillful layer to their work.)

If you're an artist, actor or just plain enjoy inventive filmmaking, this is a movie you won't want to miss.

BIRDMAN meets Paul Thomas Anderson/Indie Gem

In this character driven "New Hollywood Cinema" style Indie gem, director Zelniker takes his time to dig deeply into a real-life crisis: gambling addiction. A star turning role for stand-up comic and sitcom actor Billy Gardell -- who handles a dramatic role like a seasoned vet -- as a likeable and sympathetic gambler who is in too deep with some shady characters. This richly stylized think piece is chock full of down on their luck working class characters that inhabit the world of "off the Strip" Vegas in the 1980s who are just trying to survive the daily grind of life. Plus, there's a touch of mysticism that provides some cinematic poetry seasoned with Indigenous spirituality. A beautiful film made for true cinema lovers.

Great Watch!!!

I didn't know much about this movie going in. I saw Billy Gardell and Bert Kreischer mention it on a podcast so I figured I would give it a try. And I have to honestly say, it did not disappoint. It was great! It felt like old school cinema - thoughtful, character-driven, classy. All the cast was phenomenal, however, the one that surprised me the most was Billy Gardell. I know that comedians make good dramatic actors, but Billy was so good. I've never seen him in a lead role like this, and in my humble opinion, this will be the start of something new for him. Cheers to The Vortex, what a great watch!!!

Amazing Film!!

Just watched The Vortex and I honestly can't stop thinking about it-it completely blew me away. Billy Gardell delivers a performance that's raw, emotional, and totally unexpected. I've always liked him, but this showed a whole new side of his talent that I didn't know existed. Richard Zelniker's direction is absolutely on point-he builds the tension beautifully while still keeping the story grounded and real. The pacing was tight, the cinematography was stunning, and the emotional depth of the characters really stuck with me. It's one of those rare films that pulls you in and doesn't let go. I've already recommended it to a bunch of my friends-it's that good.

High stakes, snappy dialogue, and beautiful production design

Richard Zelniker's film, The Vortex draws its audience into a cleverly crafted whirlwind of intrigue, suspense, and the edge-of-your-seat question, "Will Pete hit the jackpot?" Then there's the looming question of how Pete (played by a down on his luck, compulsive gambler, Billy Gardell) will pay off "part time mobster, part time shoe maker, Jimmy" (a convincing and threatening Christopher Titus)." Something ominous is afoot as swirls of dark smoke creep about the beautifully majestic MGM Grand Casino dining room.

Billy Gardell's Pete Finegan exhibits two opposing personas. To the public, he's the proverbial joker, a popular standup comedian, and the jester of the casino. Behind closed doors, he's a struggling addict who can't pay his phone bill or car insurance. As the thwarted Pete resorts to last-ditch effort tactics and tries to score at the slot machines, he's treated to visits from a Paiute cleaning lady (an erudite Emily Alabi) looking to help him out, a friendly cocktail waitress, the mobster after him for his debt and his casino crush, a former ballet dancer married to Pete's friend, Johnnie B (Jeremy Luke), the cordovox player. Each of these characters represent a different path Pete could've taken, and as everyone around him moves forward, it's Pete that's sitting still. When a fellow gambler wins at the slot machine next to Pete, he's close enough to taste the freedom and triumph that evades him...but yet again failed to achieve his objective "to win it all."

What makes tortured antihero Pete such an intriguing character is his lightheartedness, resilience, and hope for "better luck." When the "girl who's off limits" tells him she's leaving Vegas for the suburbs and conventional family life, she tells Pete that "this town is sick - so many are living in a pipe dream that if they play a certain machine or hum a certain tune before they make a bet, their lives will miraculously change overnight." The penny drops, and something shifts in Pete. He realizes the night isn't about winning at the slot machines, it's about confronting his own personal demons, his nagging sins, and that the person holding him back from breaking free from the trap he's in is only himself. As the night comes to an end and we the viewer are left in smoky suspense, Zelniker asks us to answer the question of what will ultimately happen to Pete. What fate awaits him as he finally faces his demons, himself, and must make that pivotal choice...

A slow build of a crime trauma, but just the right mood.

Zelniker's direction of a script written with Stephen Barr, pulls you in to a slowly developing crime. When we first meet Billy Gardell's character, he's a comedian on stage in the showroom, but then we see him in the dressing room and learn he's up to his ears in debt. He plays a machine, a poker slot, hoping for the jackpot that will change his life. While he plays the quarters, a love interest shows up friends and a loan shark who wants his money.

But a Paiute woman shows up, who may or may not be real, and promises him a blessing with a very strict condition. Faced with the prospect of serving himself or others, Gardell's character must choose Life or death. The opening image of a smoke filled dining room and a casino floor and the closing image match like a mirror. And over all of it, a horn hovers with a lyrical and ghostly sound.
