A highly elucidative and graphic film on the controversial topic of abortion, its dangers and the morality involved, but I must say it didn't changed my
view on the issue. It got close to it at a certain parts whenever the harsh images were shown and the way the former abortionists were talking about the late
abortions and statiscs were shown as well, yet my favorable stance remains due to society's hypocrisy and false moralism that comes from pro-life supporters,
and the main hipocritical device used in this very movie.
The passionate debate remains in several countries out there, and most recently Roe v. Wade was overturned after nearly 50 years of its establishment from the Supreme Court. But here's a movie that criticizes every single aspect of abortion, either done in the 3-4 week period and also the late abortions and the whole debate of when human life is formed. Oh, it's murder, it's a crime against humanity and even to women themselves, yet to convince audiences a real abortion is shown and described by a doctor. So, I can understand a woman asking for the procedure, it was her right for countless reasons. But to show it it feels quite hypocritical, because in the minds of the makers they're filming a murder. If we consider pro-lifers wording and manners of addressing the issue, it's murder. They had to show it to convince people to avoid abortion and be against it.
The other problem comes from the alternative, the countermeasures if someone who didn't want to have a child and let it be born. The countermeasures are never discussed highly enough and don't work all that effectively and in the end all that end up happening are abandoned, neglected children or killed, or if growing it'll be always a matter of luck if they become something rather than feeling loveless and hateful to the point of turning back against society, usually through the violent ways. And another thing that bugs me the most is the excessive care for human beings when they're in the womb but once they're born society simply don't care on how they're gonna live, grow up, support themselves or whatever.
To put babies into adoption as an alternative, while an apparent win-win situation, is awfully bureacratic depending where you live and the powers of be making an effort to make it easier or present such alternative to desperate mothers who barely know how to take care of themselves. And I won't go the extra mile of those who are staunch opponents on abortion yet they make one whenever needed and with all the resources available rather than dealing with back-alley "doctors".
Nevermind the rant (or feel free to care too), but despite all that that was said, the film worked for me as an informative piece, though I can't say if it's 100% accurate, plus we're seeing 1987 data and a lot has changed over the decades. It made me reflect on certain aspects, get close to a reality barely touched on screen and I can totally understand people having second thoughts on the issue and changing their minds since the film is very convincing in its presentation with the doctors sharing their stories and why they felt it was wrong of them performing such hard tasks; and there's even two patients who share their painful ordeals after having an abortion. It made me rethink about criterions used, and there has to be one. 6/10.
