Everywhere she goes, Michelle Buteau has a rapt audience. On a Wednesday afternoon in January, we’re at a double-duty gay bar and gastropub in Brooklyn, talking over shoestring fries and coffee about her most recent stand-up special, which dropped New Year’s Eve on Netflix. Titled A Buteau-ful Mind, it was the first comedy show ever filmed by a woman at Radio City Music Hall. “It’s like going to church,” she’s saying of playing to the venue’s nearly 6,000 seats. “You gotta let the people in the back feel it.

Meyer is directing the film, which will also star Alia Shawkat and Seth Rogen.

With Broad City in their rearview, Ilana Glazer is plotting their return to television.
The Emmy winner recently revealed that they’re developing a series with nods to Sex and the City, which they said will focus on the “woman and gay guy friendship.”

“My first best friend is my brother, [who is a] gay guy. All of my best friends growing up are gay boys. I want it to be them,” added Glazer.

When one thinks of "experimental, groundbreaking television," they're probably not going to jump straight to the sitcom "Frasier," itself a spin-off of the Boston bar-based workplace sitcom "Cheers." They would be wrong, however, as "Frasier" was significantly more subversive than modern audiences give it credit for, with the writers aiming to create an "anti-'Seinfeld.'" The show turned sitcom tropes on their head with every opportunity, eschewing musical cues and establishing shots that have become a part of the sitcom audiovisual language, and, in one particularly adventurous episode, even played with the idea of multiple timelines.
Though it wouldn't go as far as introducing the concept of the multiverse à la the "Community" episode "Remedial Chaos Theory," the season 8 "Frasier" episode "Sliding Frasiers" showed audiences how the smallest of changes could completely change the course of an evening. Mental health specialist and radio host Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) tries to...

Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” reboot and the Keke Palmer-led comedy “One of Them Days” will contend for the top slot on box office charts over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Regardless of which lands in first, neither are expected to break out in what’s shaping up to be another quiet weekend for North American cinemas. “Wolf Man” is poised to open to $17 million to $21 million from 3,300 venues over the four-day frame, while “One of Them Days” looks to collect $8 million to $13 million from 2,650 theaters between Friday and Monday.
Universal and Sony each canceled the premieres of “Wolf Man” and “One of Them Days” due to the fires and extreme winds in Los Angeles. In terms of moviegoing, though, attendance doesn’t appear to be affected by the devastating wildfires that continued to ravage though parts of Los Angeles, one of the biggest theatrical markets in the country.

If the only stand-up comedy specials you’d ever watched came out in 2024, you might think there are only two kinds: ones that are about being a parent, and ones that are about never being a parent. Are you the kind of comic who’s figured out how to talk about your kids without seeming like you just walked out of a Jim Belushi sitcom, or the kind who’s had to defend your choice not to continue your family name? You have to decide, dammit, Deciiiiiiiide.
If you haven’t checked in with Ilana Glazer in a while, you might be surprised and possibly even a little alarmed to learn that they’ve ended up on the parent side of the divide. But the most astonishing trick in their new special, Human Magic — considering that it opens with a joke about sleep deprivation causing them cognitive decline — is how...

Wendi McLendon-Covey is a very funny woman. That’s a statement backed up by facts. She starred as Beverly in ABC’s “The Goldbergs” for 10 seasons — a runtime that seems downright shocking in an era dominated by two to three season hits — and has starred in every kind of buzzy comedy from mainstream blockbusters like “Bridesmaids” to ambitious critical darlings like “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” This is all to say that McLendon-Covey knows comedy.
And right now she’s frustrated by it.
“I want to choose my words carefully. I’m an enthusiastic TV watcher and I love comedies. But can we take big swings again?” McLendon-Covey asked TheWrap. “Audiences are getting bored, and they are way more sophisticated than we think they are.”
McLendon-Covey cited Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s 2009 Comedy Central show “Broad City” as one of the “top five funniest things I’ve ever seen.

Thanks to the success of the beloved Comedy Central series, Broad City, Abbi Jacobson is widely known as a comedic force in film and television. But, as of late, she’s busy uniting her comedy skillset with more dramatic performance opportunities, and the power of her ability to do both is undeniable. After soaring in the canceled-too-soon Prime Video series, A League of Their Own, Jacobson joins the ensemble of yet another brilliant comedy and drama combo, Netflix’s No Good Deed.

More than five years later, Ilana Glazer is happy about where Broad City ended.
The Emmy winner recently explained why her and Abbi Jacobson‘s Comedy Central series, which was developed from their web series of the same name, ended after five seasons in 2019 despite the opportunity to continue.
“Broad City was like a big [deal],” she explained on NPR’s Wild Card podcast. “We had signed our contract of seven seasons and then, we both came to it, Abbi and I. And Comedy Central was like, ‘Huh?’ We were like ambivalent and unsure, but I think that’s something I would say is elegant about me knowing when things are at their end.”
Glazer added, “And like being able to trust that I am generative beyond this moment, whether it’s a creative project or anything, you know, but I am secure that I will keep generating new layers and do without thinking.

Liz Feldman is back with a new series called “No Good Deed,” and just as she did in her Netflix series “Dead to Me,” she’s set up a pretty good mystery.
Now streaming on Netflix, the show centers on Paul and Lydia, who are trying to sell their very popular and desired home. For them, it’s become haunted after their son was killed there three years earlier.
His death is labeled a casualty of a home invasion, but nothing is quite what it seems on this one. And there are plenty of potential suspects in and around the neighborhood.
Here are the faces you’ll need to know.
Netflix Lydia Morgan (Lisa Kudrow)
Lydia Morgan is a renowned pianist, but after her son is killed, she can’t keep her hands from shaking and temporarily loses her ability to play. She’s brought to life by “Friends” and “Time Bandits” star Lisa Kudrow.

In a candid interview on NPR’s “Wild Card with Rachel Martin,” Ilana Glazer described the evolution of “Broad City,” the smash Comedy Central series that accurately depicted young adult life in New York City. The sitcom ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2019, while being initially planned for seven.
Glazer, who co-created the sitcom with Abbi Jacobson, stated that they originally signed a contract for a lengthier run. However, both creators were unsure about continuing, prompting a choice that startled Comedy Central. “We were both ambivalent and unsure,” Glazer admitted, reflecting on their decision to conclude the event earlier than planned.
The choice to end “Broad City” was not easy. Glazer defined it as an “elegant” moment in which a creative undertaking comes to a natural completion. “I am confident that I will continue to generate new layers and act without thinking,” she stated, emphasizing the need to know when to move on.

Although Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson‘s Broad City characters took a flight to Israel, they never quite made the birthright trip they imagined.
Amid the country’s ongoing conflict with Palestine, Glazer recalled that she and Jacobson “were actually going to film in Israel” before deciding to “pull the plug” at the last minute, detailing what would have happened in the hour-long Season 3 finale of their Comedy Central series.
“There was violence happening between Israelis and Palestinians,” she explained to The Daily Beast. “And I don’t think either one of us had taken our journey into understanding the situation there to the degree that we do now, but it was just a bad vibe. And we were promised all of this army protection, you can film and there will be soldiers there with guns, and we were like, wait, what are we doing? We have to fully pull the plug.

Titled Kansas City Star, the half-hour project is headlined and executive produced by Kaley Cuoco and created and executive produced by the Hacks trio of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Deals are still being finalized but the comedy is expected to get a series order, I hear. Warner Bros. Television, where Cuoco and her Yes, Norman banner have a producing deal and Aniello & Downs as well as Statsky are under overall deals, is the studio.
Details about Kansas City Star are sketchy but it is described by sources as a comedy with heart starring Cuoco as a semi-famous actress who returns to her hometown to work with a regional theater troupe. Reps for HBO and Wbtv declined comment.

Exclusive: Jax Media, an Imagine Entertainment company, is shutting down its development operations. I hear the announcement was made during a staff meeting yesterday. Moving forward, all development will be consolidated and run through Imagine Television. Jax’s development team will wind down by year’s end when its executives, led by Jax Head of TV Dave Binegar, who joined a year ago, and UK Creative Director Katie Gahamire, who came on board in April, will depart.
The move signals Jax reverting to its original core business as a production services company. That will continue under new head of production Yolanda T. Cochran who was just hired for the role, replacing Jake Fuller who stepped down to focus on independent production, mostly sports-related.
Also staying on are Hussain Casey-Ahmed, who joined in April and runs production in the UK, as well as John Nemeth and Morgan Howard, who oversee production in New York.

Ilana Glazer is coming out as non-binary.
In a new interview, the 37-year-old Broad City star came out as non-binary and shared how being pregnant with their daughter helped them realize their true identity.
Keep reading to find out more…“Being pregnant on paper was the most female thing I could ever do, but it actually highlighted both the masculine and feminine inside of me,” Ilana told The Independent. “For so long, my masculinity felt like something I had to hide or make a joke of, and my femininity was something that felt like drag.”
Ilana, who now uses the she/they pronouns, and husband David Rooklin welcomed their daughter in 2021.
Ilana went on to explain that there was always an “element of comedy” to their gender, which limited their “genuine personal experience.”
“Then this gift of being pregnant made space for me to be real with myself,” Ilana said.

Comedy creator Ilana Glazer recently opened up about their evolving understanding of gender. In a recent interview, Glazer said their pregnancy experience shed light on both their masculine and feminine sides. This realization has prompted Glazer to use they/she pronouns and feel more authentic in how they present themselves.
Glazer co-created and starred in the Comedy Central series “Broad City” from 2014 to 2019. In the interview, Glazer reflected on how viewers saw feminist themes in the show, which surprised them. Glazer said they “hadn’t even thought about it like that” when learning it was viewed as feminist.
An episode from 2016 featured a cameo from then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the heated race against Donald Trump. Glazer acknowledged mixed reactions but wanted Clinton to win. While not friends with Clinton, Glazer said she sits “somewhere in the middle” of liking and disliking her as a person.
Comedy is central to Glazer’s work.

The Emmy Award winner recently recalled the mixed reactions to Hillary Clinton‘s 2016 cameo on the Comedy Central series and when they realized “how politically perceived” the show was, which they co-created and co-starred with Abbi Jacobson.
“Oh my god, what a world! Things have changed,” Glazer told The Independent of the episode featuring Clinton. “I mean, I did vote for Hillary Clinton. I did want Hillary Clinton to win over Donald Trump. I don’t think she’s a perfect, flawless person or a perfect flawless politician. I’m not friends with her. I can’t really tell you where she is for me on a spectrum of hate to dislike to like to love—maybe somewhere in the middle as a person? But I really wanted her to win.

After defining goofy millennial aimlessness with her beloved sitcom Broad City, the writer-actor is facing up to motherhood with new film Babes. But don’t worry: she hasn’t grown up too much
Ilana Glazer is trying to think of films about pregnancy and early parenthood that aren’t told from a man’s perspective. “There’s Knocked Up, but that’s about Seth Rogen. And there’s Nine Months, but that’s about Hugh Grant. Three Men and a Baby cracks me up because it’s like, three?!” says the 37-year-old, with comically perfect levels of incredulity (cracking me up in the process).
Glazer – best known as co-creator of the seminal millennial sitcom Broad City – is making a serious point: there are outrageously few movies about birth and babies that centre on the female experience. The comedian’s attempt to rectify this, however, has taken the form of a distinctly unserious film: in fact,...
