'Roofman Trailer': Channing Tatum Is a Criminal Living in a Toy Store
Image
Paramount and Miramax have released the first trailer for Roofman, a new crime comedy based on an unbelievable true story. Channing Tatum stars as real-life felon Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald's restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname that the film is titled after. He eventually gets caught, escapes prison, and finds solace in a Toys "R" Us, where he decides to hide from the authorities — with no shortage of things to keep him entertained.

The trailer largely depicts his time in the toy store, suggesting that this is where most of the action will take place, though there will likely be some glimpses of his criminal activities and jail time. Despite his surroundings, it's not all fun and games, as Tatum's character constantly has to plan his next move to remain undetected during his six-month...

Channing Tatum Touts ‘Roofman’ as “Equal Parts Devastating, Emotional and Somehow Hilarious”
Image
CinemaCon’s distinguished decade of achievement in film award winner Channing Tatum took the Colosseum stage on Thursday to talk up his new film Roofman.

Tatum, who will accept the honor at the convention’s closing night Big Screen Achievement Awards, appeared during Paramount Pictures’ studio presentation at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Roofman, set for release on Oct. 3, comes from filmmaker Derek Cianfrance, who also wrote the script with Kirt Gunn.

Based on a true story, Roofman casts Tatum as a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname “Roofman.” After escaping from prison, he starts a new life while hiding in a toy store, and falls in love with a single mother and her two daughters. However, his criminal past and a final robbery threaten to destroy his chance at redemption.

Alfonso Cuarón Rumored to Direct Next James Bond
Image
While speculation over who will play the next James Bond rages on, things are coming together behind the camera for the next and 26th installment in the 007 franchise. Recently, producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal have been eyed to produce the new film, but no official announcements can be made until the paperwork is finished regarding the $1 billion buyout of Barbara Broccoli's Bond rights. The Sun claims that writers have already been hired, but again, there hasn't been an announcement. Likewise, no announcement can be made regarding the director of the next film, but it's said that Edward Berger and Alfonso Cuarón are in the running. Now, Matthew Belloni of Puck said on The Town podcast that he predicts Cuarón will get the gig, which would be his first film in seven years and follow his Apple TV+ series Disclaimer.

"It's an informed, speculative pick," said Belloni. "And it is not Chris Nolan.

Back In Action: Five Movie Directors Making A Welcome Return In 2025
Image
It’s hard to believe now but before taking 12 long years to follow 1987’s Full Metal Jacket with Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, the famously meticulous Stanley Kubrick was comparatively prolific — in the ’60s alone he released four of his 13 features. In these days of instant gratification, a director taking longer than three years is either deemed to be M.I.A. or about to pop up with a secret film made entirely under the radar. But absence does make the heart grow fonder, and these five directors can expect a warm welcome in 2025.

As previously announced, Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, and Peter Dinklage will also star in the film based on the unbelievable true story of Jeffrey Manchester (Tatum), a U.S. Army Reserve officer turned convicted spree-robber who rose to infamy as the ‘Rooftop Robber’ or ‘Roofman.’ A specialist in robbing McDonald’s locations across the U.S., Manchester’s criminal exploits kicked off in November 1998. Channing Tatum
Roofman I Derek Cianfrance’s first film in eight years in October 2025
Channing Tatum
Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst lead the cast of director Derek Cianfrance’s crime drama, with Roofman set to debut in 2025.

There’ll be plenty of folks out there keeping an eye out for director Derek Cianfrance’s next film, partly because we’ve had to wait so long for it. It’s been eight years since he made 2016’s The Light Between Oceans, and although he;s since been attached to the odd project, nothing ever came to fruition.

Cianfrance is the director behind Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, so any project he attaches himself to will be of interest to people who liked those movies. His latest film, Roofman, stars Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst and tells the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a career criminal who made a habit of breaking into shops through their roofs (hence the film’s name). Romance struck when...

How Taika Waititi Convinced Michael Fassbender to Ditch His Vacation of Racing Sports Cars: ‘He was in his hotel bed with a glass of champagne’
Image
Michael Fassbender has done a lot for his roles. Be it wearing a metal helmet and pretending that he could move things with his hand (in the X-Men films), or playing a British commando and former film critic who goes undercover as a German officer (Inglourious Basterds) – he has proven his excellence in it all, irrespective of however challenging the role may have been.

But perhaps his most challenging role must have been that of Thomas Rongen in the 2023 comedy-sport Next Goal Wins. This is because he had to ditch his vacation plans of racing sports cars to work on the movie. But the real credit for it, perhaps, goes to filmmaker Taika Waititi, considering how he was the one to tell Fassbender about the role and convince him for it in the first place!

King Henry VIII is most associated with ordering the killings of two of his wives while he had his marriages to another three annulled.

Usually forgotten or rarely mentioned is sixth and final spouse Catherine Parr. But Alicia Vikander is hoping her portrayal of Parr in the new drama “Firebrand” will bring more attention to the royal widow.

“I must confess, I almost felt a bit embarrassed when I was sent the script because I think if I knew anything, it was probably more about the wives that didn’t make it,” the Oscar winner tells me on a new episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I was, in one way, sad. But then I realized speaking to other people, it seemed like that was the general feel for most, that we have the least knowledge about this woman who actually did survive X amount of years living with this man,...

‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ Director Says Bradley Cooper Nearly Quit After Rewrite and Told Him: ‘I’m Out…That’s Not the Movie We Signed Up to Do’
Image
Derek Cianfrance, director and co-writer of “The Place Beyond the Pines,” told IndieWire at the New Directors/New Films festival that Bradley Cooper almost bowed out of the production after receiving a rewritten script.

Just before principle photography began, Cianfrance brought in screenwriter Darius Marder to rewrite “every word” of “The Place Beyond the Pines.” Cooper was not pleased with the changes to his character, a police officer who kills off a compassionate thief (Ryan Gosling) at the film’s halfway mark.

“I had given [Marder] the script and he had a lot of notes for it, and I kind of agreed with a lot of what he was saying. And so we rewrote every word from 10 weeks to six weeks,” Cianfrance explained. “I remember giving Bradley Cooper the copy of ‘The Place Beyond the Pines,’ the new script, and getting a voice message from him saying, ‘Bro, I just want...

Bradley Cooper Almost Quit ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ After Script Changes
Image
Bradley Cooper almost bowed out of “The Place Beyond the Pines.”

Writer/director Derek Cianfrance, who co-wrote the feature with future “Sound of Metal” director Darius Marder, revealed during IndieWire’s Screen Talk live at the New Directors/New Films festival that Academy Award-nominated Cooper wavered after receiving an updated script.

Cianfrance brought writer Marder onboard to help rewrite “every word” of “The Place Beyond the Pines” shortly before shooting began. According to Cianfrance, actor Cooper was less than pleased with the updates to his character, a police officer who kills an empathetic thief (Ryan Gosling) midway through the decade-spanning 2013 film.

“I had given [Darius Marder] the script and he had a lot of notes for it, and I kind of agreed with a lot of what he was saying. And so we rewrote every word from 10 weeks to six weeks,” Cianfrance said during Screen Talk live, co-hosted by Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio.

Gary Dauberman’s Coin Operated Taps Amblin Vet as President (Exclusive)
Image
Longtime Amblin Partners executive Mia Maniscalco has been tapped as president of Coin Operated, the production banner founded by horror multi-hyphenate Gary Dauberman.

Maniscalco will oversee development and production of Coin Operated’s expanding slate, working closely with Dauberman, who has been involved in some of the biggest horror franchises of the past decade, including It, Annabelle and The Nun, as writer, producer, and even director.

Max Lippe will continue as the company’s director of development.

Maniscalco joins the company as it begins what looks to be a busy run across the horror landscape. The genre remains one of the few that have not only weathered but thrived in the harsh theatrical conditions of recent years. Dauberman late last year signed a first-look deal with Screen Gems/Sony Pictures. The company already has one feature project on deck, a film adaptation of the beloved PlayStation hit horror game Until Dawn,...

Ryan Coogler, Derek Cianfrance, Ben Wheatley, Jody Hill & More Set Next Films
Image
Seemingly freed from the Marvel machine, Ryan Coogler is set to reunite with Michael B. Jordan on a new project, recently picked up by Warner Bros. THR reports the period thriller will feature the undead, and potentially take place in Jim Crow-era South. While other details are under wraps, there are reports it will feature anime influences and has franchise potential. Production will kick off this April in New Orleans, so expect to learn much more soon.

After circling a few projects, we’ve been waiting to see what feature Derek Cianfrance would take on next in the nearly decade since The Light Between Oceans. He’s now settled on Roofman, which he scripted with Kirt Gunn, with Deadline reporting Channing Tatum will lead as the real-life Jeffrey Manchester, “an eccentric and charming serial robber who broke into more than 60 McDonald’s overnight via their roofs, then emptied the cash...

Roofman | Derek Cianfrance set to direct his first film in 8 years
Derek Cianfrance
Derek Cianfrance will direct Roofman, the story of Jeffrey Manchester who committed a string of bizarre robberies in the 90s.

Derek Cianfrance, the acclaimed director behind Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, has finally set up his next project. The news comes via Jeff Sneider’s newsletter (spotted by World Of Reel).

The director recently left the new The Wolfman film, which will see Ryan Gosling in the title role. He originally replaced Leigh Whannell as the director, but it’s now being reported that Whannell is back in the director’s chair for Universal’s monster movie.

With his schedule now free, Cianfrance is eyeing up the story of Jeffrey Manchester, a man who robbed McDonald’s restaurants in the 90s while living in a branch of Toys R Us. Manchester would break into the restaurants through the roof – hence the film’s title, Roofman – and wait...

The Killer Fixes Michael Fassbender's Bad 8-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak (But Another Movie Has Already Ruined It)
Image
The Killer is Michael Fassbender's highest-rated movie since Slow West on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critic score of 87%. Fassbender's movies have generally been met with mediocre reception since 2015, with Alien: Covenant and The Light Between Oceans being his best-rated films during that period. Following Fassbender's hiatus from acting and the underwhelming response to his movies before the break, he seems ready to make a comeback with The Killer and future projects.

Despite his reputation as a great actor, Michael Fassbender's movies weren't faring well critically, but the release of The Killer has broken his disappointing Rotten Tomatoes streak. Fassbender rose to prominence when he played young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies. He then gained more respect as an actor with his performances in 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs, which are among Michael Fassbender's best movies, with both earning him Oscar nominations. However, since 2015, Fassbender-led movies have...

Michael Fassbender's Most Underrated Role Is in a Swoony Romance
Image
Michael Fassbender is without a doubt one of the best actors working today, but that doesn’t mean that viewing any of his films is a particularly uplifting experience. Fassbender seems to almost exclusively pick projects with a foreboding sense of doom and gloom. Ever since he kicked off his career with Steve McQueen’s 2008 masterpiece Hunger, Fassbender has been drawn to dark, disturbing, and tortured characters in projects including Shame, 12 Years a Slave, Inglorious Basterds, Macbeth, and David Fincher's The Killer, to name a few. While it's great to see Fassbender thrive in his niche, it’s also interesting to see whenever an actor can challenge the preconceived expectations that an audience may have for them. Even though he’s most often associated with perpetual misery, Fassbender got the chance to show off his romantic side in the underrated 2016 period piece The Light Between Oceans.

Michael Fassbender's New Movie Will End 8 Years Of Disappointments
Image
Michael Fassbender has faced a series of failures in recent years, but his upcoming film "The Killer" could be the turnaround he needs. "The Killer" is directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher, and early footage suggests it has the potential to be one of the best films of 2023. Fassbender's comeback doesn't stop with "The Killer" – he also has two other movies set to release in late 2023, showing his full force in reclaiming success.

Michael Fassbender is undoubtedly an accomplished actor with plenty of critically acclaimed and successful films under his belt, but he has been struggling to land a good project in recent years, and thankfully, The Killer can change that. Fassbender first rose to fame when he starred as Stelios in 300 in 2006, and he continued his string of success with movies like Hunger, Inglourious Basterds, Jane Eyre, A Dangerous Method, Prometheus, and 12 Years a Slave. He is...

Alicia Vikander Says Her Role in Sci-Fi Thriller ‘The Assessment’ Is ‘Pretty Wild,’ and ‘Scares’ Her
Image
Alicia Vikander, the Swedish actor who won an Oscar for her role in “The Danish Girl” in 2015, has taken on a remarkable range of characters in recent years – but is still stretching her boundaries, she says.

Speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where she presented the historical drama “Firebrand” on opening night, Vikander says she’s now prepping for films that offer distinctly different challenges than her turn as Catherine Parr, the only one of Henry VIII’s six wives to outlive the marriage.

One character she admits she’s still deciphering is the central figure in the upcoming sci-fi feature “The Assessment,” a feature project with Paris-based writer/director Fleur Fortuné.

“I got the script sent to me,” says Vikander, adding that something about the story instantly intrigued her. Details are still under wraps, she says, but the film is set in a world of the near future...

‘Awards Chatter’ Podcast — Alicia Vikander (‘Firebrand’ and ‘Irma Vep’)
Image
Alicia Vikander — who, at just 34, is already an Academy Award, SAG Award and Critics Choice Award winner, a three-time BAFTA Award nominee and a two-time Golden Globe Award nominee, and has been described as “the biggest Swedish export since Ikea” — is the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at the Campari Lounge within the Palais at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Swede, who is best known — and won her Oscar — for 2015’s The Danish Girl, was at the fest with a project for the third year in a row. In 2022 she returned with the HBO limited series Irma Vep, which screened as part of the Cannes Premiere section, and for which she is now in Emmy contention. This time,...

Alicia Vikander on Henry VIII Film ‘Firebrand’ and Being a “Huge Jason Bourne Fan”
Image
During a wide-ranging conversation for THR‘s Awards Chatter podcast at the Campari Lounge at the Cannes Film Festival, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander went through her career from her upbringing in Sweden and background in ballet to her Oscar-winning role in The Danish Girl and her latest film Firebrand, which will screen in competition at the festival.

Vikander’s big break in her native Sweden came with 2010’s Pure. She then turned heads in the 2012 Danish film A Royal Affair, co-starring with Mads Mikkelsen, but it was her role in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina that gained her notoriety in the U.S. “Everything that needs to be there, is there and nothing else. A lot of it you had to understand by reading the action and understanding what is happening in the scene emotionally,” she said of the Garland- written screenplay. For the self-tape audition for the film, she...

‘Squid Game’ Star Hoyeon Joins Michael Fassbender & Alicia Vikander In Korean Thriller ‘Hope’
Image
Exclusive: A hot project just got hotter. Emmy-nominated Korean actress and model Hoyeon, who made waves with Netflix’s Squid Game, is set to make her feature debut in director Na Hong-Jin’s Korean thriller Hope, which we revealed earlier today.

She joins Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender.

This is the first project from acclaimed Korean director Na since 2016 hit The Wailing, and it’ll mark Hoyeon’s first starring role in a Korean project since she made her screen debut in Squid Game.

The largely Korean-language film will follow the residents of Hopo Port, where a mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. Before long, the residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before. Hoyeon will play a policewoman.

Additional casting and pre-production is underway for a shoot later this year in Korea.

Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender to Star in ‘Hope’ From ‘The Wailing’ Director Na Hong-Jin
Michael Fassbender
Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, real-life husband and wife, are reuniting onscreen for the second time. The Oscar-winner (Vikander for “The Danish Girl”) and the Oscar-nominee (Fassbender for “12 Years A Slave”) will star in “Hope,” a mostly Korean-language feature from Na Hong-Jin.

The picture, about a mysterious delivery made on the outskirts of a remote harbor town, is the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since “The Wailing” earned rave reviews and $49 million worldwide in 2016 from a $6 million budget, with $48 million of that coming from South Korea.

“Oftentimes,” noted Hong-Jin, “a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.”

Alicia Vikander
Alicia Vikander is looking back on her journey to motherhood. The topic came up while discussing her new show, Irma Vep, in a July 24 interview with The Sunday Times. In an episode of the HBO series, one of the characters suffers a miscarriage, and as Vikander explains, she could relate to the loss firsthand.  "We have a child now," the actress told the newspaper, referencing her 17-month-old son with husband Michael Fassbender, "but it took us time."  Vikander, 33, and Fassbender, 45, met while working on the 2016 film The Light Between Oceans. Alicia Vikander Says She Felt ‘Most Sad’ at the Height of Her Fame
Image
“Irma Vep” star Alicia Vikander has reminisced about her early years in the spotlight in a new interview with The Times of London, saying she was “the most sad at the height of [her] fame.”

The 33-year-old Swedish actress, who broke through internationally with Nikolaj Arcel’s Oscar-nominated “A Royal Affair” in 2012, became a global star after knockout back-to-back performances in the sci-fi thriller “Ex Machina” and transgender romance “Danish Girl,” the latter of which earned her a best supporting actress Oscar in 2016. But during that time, Vikander said she felt lonelier than ever.

“When, in other people’s eyes, I was at my height of fame, I was the most sad. I kept telling myself, ‘Take it in. It is incredible.’ But I didn’t know what to do. There were all these first-class flights, five-star rooms. But I was always by myself. I was by myself,” Vikander told The Times.

Alicia Vikander Replaces Michelle Williams As Queen Catherine Parr In Karim Ainouz’s ‘Firebrand’
Image
Alicia Vikander (Blue Bayou) is replacing Michelle Williams as Queen Catherine Parr in the royal thriller Firebrand from Brazilian helmer Karim Ainouz (The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão), Deadline has confirmed. She’ll star alongside Jude Law, who is set to portray King Henry VIII.

Ainousz’s first English-language feature, based on Elizabeth Fremantle’s bestselling historical novel Queen’s Gambit, centers on Parr—Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife, who was the only one to avoid banishment or death.

By the time young Catherine Parr (Vikander) married the deteriorating, increasingly despotic King Henry VIII (Law), she had no assurances of a happy marriage; in fact, she had no assurances of surviving this marriage at all. Of her predecessors, two were thrown out, one died in childbirth and two were beheaded. While Catherine tried to keep her head about her to navigate the politics of her position, she brought a secret agenda.

Ryan Gosling And Universal’s ‘Wolfman’ Sets Derek Cianfrance As Director
Image
Exclusive: Universal’s latest Wolfman movie starring Ryan Gosling looks to be gaining momentum as the studio has zeroed in on a director that knows the Oscar-nominated actor’s work very well. Sources tell Deadline that Derek Cianfrance, who teamed with Gosling on the dramas Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine, is in talks to direct a new take on the studio’s classic monster character.

Cianfrance steps in for Leigh Whannell, who parted ways with the project earlier this year due to scheduling. Gosling, Ken Kao and Jason Blum are producing, and Cianfrance is penning the script.

It’s unknown what the new take on Wolfman will look like, though it is believed to be a modern take and not a period piece like the one starring Benicio Del Toro. Gosling pitched the idea and the take fell in line with the studio’s new vision for its monster movies.

‘Unhinged’ Star Caren Pistorius on Returning to Movie Theaters and Working with Russell Crowe
Image
Caren Pistorius can only describe her experience on “Unhinged” as wonderful but “surreal.” The actor was working at a fabric store in Sydney when she got the call to audition for the road rage thriller starring Russell Crowe.

Within hours, she found herself in New Orleans for a screen test. She ended up staying in the city as she quickly landed the role, and the film began shooting a week later. Although she’s appeared in films like “Slow West” and “The Light Between Oceans,” “Unhinged” marks her first feature film leading role.

And now there’s another twist for Pistorius. Her movie is one of the first to make its way back into American theaters as they begin to open across the country this week (it opened in Germany July 16.) In the film, directed by Derrick Borte, Pistorius’ single mother Rachel finds herself and her son terrorized by Crowe...

Caren Pistorius in ‘Unhinged.’

Caren Pistorius was working part-time in a fabrics shop in Sydney last year when her Rgm agent suggested she audition for the lead female role opposite Russell Crowe in a US road rage thriller.

The South African-born, New Zealand-raised actress did a self-tape but felt it was too rushed and didn’t expect it to lead anywhere.

The following day her agent told her the producers wanted her to fly to New Orleans the next day to audition with Crowe.

“I turned up in that room after almost no sleep, feeling delirious,” she tells If on the line from New Zealand, where she is spending lockdown with her family. The next morning director Derrick Borte rang to tell her she’d won the role in Unhinged.

Caren plays a single mother named Rachel in the Solstice Studios production which opened in Australia yesterday via Studiocanal and...
