Back when Kim Han-min made “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” in 2014, little did he know that the film would go on to become the highest grossing Korean film of all time, a record still held by it, or that he would go on to make a trilogy of features on its lead character, legendary real-life naval commander, the much loved Admiral Yi Sun-shin. Yet here we are, just under a decade since the release of “The Admiral”, and the final film in the Yi Sun-shin trilogy looks finally set to release, following on from last year’s “Hansan: Rising Dragon”.
Synopsis
In 1598, the seven-year Imjin War nears an end as Wae invaders prepare to withdraw from Joseon. Admiral Yi Sun-shin leads an allied fleet of Joseon and Ming ships to annihilate the Wae army. Joseon, Ming, and Wae forces clash at Noryang Strait, the deadly sea where Admiral Yi fights his last valiant battle.

There’s a strange sense in which the Mandalorians killed the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Star Wars has always been a transmedia franchise; the first tie-in book, Alan Dean Foster’s Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, was published in 1978 – before the release of The Empire Strikes Back. But this so-called “Expanded Universe” only really became a hit in the 1990s, in the aftermath of Timothy Zahn’s “Thrawn trilogy.” The Star Wars franchise soon expanded across mediums including New York Times-bestselling novels, comics, and computer games.
And then, as the decade came to an end, George Lucas returned to make the prequel trilogy. Lucas didn’t want to be boxed in by the Star Wars Expanded Universe; although he took ideas he liked, in general he had no qualms about contradicting ideas from the EU. Lucasfilm adopted a tiered approach to canon; Lucas’ own productions were “G”-level, absolute canon,...

Back in 2014, director Kim Han-min’s “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” released in Korean and international theatres and in the process set a record for the highest grossing Korean film of all time at the domestic box office, a record that no other feature has managed to push it off of even eight years later. Based on one of the most important and famous naval battles in history, the feature benefitted from the legendary hero status of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, a man so revered and loved that he has a statue of himself in the center of Seoul. Following up such a successful production can be daunting for a person, but Kim Han-min went down a unique path to follow it up; he decided to do not one but two different features and do a full trilogy on Yi Sun-shin, with the second story coming in the form of “Hansan: Rising Dragon...

I seem to be in a pretty small minority in that, though. The world demands movies from their comic books, TV shows from their novels, opera from their stories about historical figures, stage musicals assembled from random songs. And vice versa: look at the deeply incestuous “casting thread,” in which random observers squee over which actors in TV-shows-based-on-books should be their favorite characters in a potential movie-based-on-a-comic-book.
On the other hand, I don’t mind as much with old stuff. A new movie based on a Shakespeare play? Yeah, Ok – that’s closer to the point to begin with. A graphic novel based on that hundred-year-old book everyone has heard of? Well, I suspect...

While Disney originally didn’t care much about the Star Wars Expanded Universe and its numerous overarching narratives, Lucasfilm has recently shown an inclination to canonize some of the lore now that the Skywalker Saga has come to a close.
To that end, J.J. Abrams incorporated several references to a couple of the legendary Sith Lords from the days of the Old Republic in The Rise of Skywalker, including the fan favorite Darth Revan. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni then took this further in The Mandalorian and Star Wars Rebels, respectively, by writing in Admiral Thrawn from the Heir to the Empire trilogy of novels. This narrative is generally held in high regard by fans and many of them believe, in fact, that it’s some of the best Star Wars out there.

Fans of Disney’s hit show The Mandalorian finally got to lay their eyes on a genuine Jedi in last week’s installment.
Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice prior to his turn to the Dark Side and transformation into Darth Vader, made her live-action debut in “Chapter 13,” an appearance which fans of the character have been waiting for ever since actress Rosario Dawson was confirmed to play the role earlier this year. Unsurprisingly, given the near universal acclaim heaped on the series by viewers and critics alike, showrunners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni – the latter of whom created Ahsoka – hit yet another home run with the episode, with Dawson, too, deserving credit for her excellent performance.

The Mandalorian brings a fan-favorite Jedi from Star Wars animation to live action in “The Jedi,” which takes us to the wasteland planet of Corvus, where an Imperial warlord rules with an iron fist. Along the way, we learn more about Baby Yoda’s origin as well as where the show might be headed. We also get some pretty neat callbacks to the classic films of Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa.
Here are all of the easter eggs and Star Wars references we’ve found in “The Jedi” so far:

– Fan-favorite Jedi hero Ahsoka Tano finally makes her live action debut in “The Jedi.” She’s played by Rosario Dawson here. As if she simply leapt out of the animated series and onto The Mandalorian, Ahsoka looks almost exactly like she did on Rebels, wearing similar attire and armed with the white lightsabers she used before the Galactic Civil War.

Marge Champion, a dancer who achieved nationwide television fame in the 1950s with her husband and dance partner Gower Champion and even then had already contributed to cinema history as a movement model for three classic Walt Disney animated films, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. She was 101.
Her death was announced by her son Gregg Champion. A cause was not specified.
The daughter of a Hollywood dance coach, Champion was already performing in public when she was recruited by Disney to serve as the movement model for the lead character in 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the same year she entered a three-year marriage to Disney animator Arthur Babbitt. Champion would also provide the movements for the Blue Fairy in 1940’s Pinocchio and the ballet-dancing hippos in 1940’s Fantasia.
But if her work had already been seen by millions, Champion didn’t become recognizably famous until the late 1940s,...

In a world shaken by pandemic, with hundreds of thousands of dead from a preventable failure of governments around the globe, much of humankind is searching for glimmers of hope in the United States’ electoral politics. Any modicum of bad news – whether it is a bad poll result or vain, Dunning-Kruegered rappers launching attention grabs disguised as presidential campaigns – is enough to set an enormous chunk of humankind into hair-shedding jitters. Hope is about the only thing sustaining many of us through these dark days.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 11
With everything that’s happening right now with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s nice to know that some traditions are still being observed. In the real world, we may not be able to celebrate Passover or Easter in a normal fashion. However, in the fictional version of Brooklyn on NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, there’s no virus putting the brakes on the annual heist. Well, ok, there are multiple breaks put on the Halloween Heist during “Valloweaster” but that’s all by crafty design.
Being our seventh installment of the heist, the whole endeavor runs the risk of growing stale, so new elements must be thrown in to keep things fresh. This year, within the show, that fresh element is random, handcuffed partners, while the writers take advantage of the season’s schedule no longer lining up with Halloween by...

Trailers From Hell is featuring more movies you never heard of this week, so my wine selections should be easy pairings – more wines you never heard of. Wine aficionados and movie buffs say those are the best ones, anyway. Everybody likes to think they are a cult of one. In my younger days, music at my place was like “stump the band.” If you had ever heard it anywhere else, it wouldn’t find my turntable. My fondness for Bruce Springsteen’s music knew no limits in those years, but diminished with each of my friends who signed on as believers. Oh, I still liked him as a superstar, it just wasn’t the same with everyone else on board.

Speaking in Rotterdam, Netherlands Film Fund director Doreen Boonekamp has delivered an upbeat assessment of the state of the Dutch film industry.
Boonekamp has also revealed details of how the country’s new cash rebate system, introduced last year, is driving up production levels.
Some €78m was spent on Dutch production last year, a considerable hike on production investment in 2013, which was around €14m less.
Boonekamp said, as a result of the new incentive, “a lot of post production work is going back to the Netherlands”.
The incentive offers a cash rebate of 30% on the eligible Dutch spend.
Since the incentive was launched in June 2014, 51 film projects have received a total of €13.6m from the scheme.
These have included high profile projects such as Mike van Diem’s De Surprise, Alex van Warmerdam’s Schneider vs. Bax, Polish feature Math Sucks, Austrian movie The Night Of A Thousand Hours, and Roel Reiné’s epic seafaring yarn Michiel de Ruyter...

Leo Hannewijk, festival director at Film by the Sea in Vlissingen, has taken up a new, additional role as film commissioner in Zeeland.
His appointment comes as film activity in the region is intensifying, partly in response to the new Dutch cash rebate incentive introduced last year.
Recent films to have shot in Zeeland include Berlinale title Confetti Harvest, the first feature by Tallulah H. Schwab and Sergio Herman, Fucking Perfect, a feature doc about the titular master chef who decides to let go of his three-star restaurant Oud Sluis in the region in order to fulfill his dreams.
Also shooting in the region was Roel Reiné’s epic seafaring costume drama Michiel De Ruyter, starring Charles Dance, Frank Lammers and Rutger Hauer. A Film will be giving Michiel De Ruyter a 150-copy release in the Netherlands later this month.
Hannewijk and his colleagues in Zeeland will be meeting with Reiné next week to have talks about making...
