A prominent director of indie movies sees streamers like Kai Cenat and iShowSpeed as the auteur filmmakers of their generation. In an interview with Indiewire, Harmony Korine dubbed Kai and Speed as a few of the “talented and creative minds” who are hosting innovative streams instead of taking traditional Hollywood career paths.

Korine, a director best known for edgy films like Kids and Spring Breakers, discussed the streaming landscape while promoting his new feature Baby Invasion. 30 years into his career, Korine believes Hollywood is at a crossroads, with many decision-makers ignoring the abundance of talent that’s bubbling up on the internet.

“What’s happening in Hollywood — and you’re starting to see Hollywood, I think, crumble creatively — is that they’re losing a lot of the most talented and creative minds to gaming and to streamers,” Korine told Indiewire. “Like IShowSpeed is a movie, Kai Cenat is a movie.

Sabrina Caluori, a veteran TV exec who was Nickelodeon’s top marketing exec, is exiting her post ahead of broader layoffs at Paramount Global.

In a memo to colleagues (read it in full below), Caluori said her “three slime-filled years” at the company are ending today. Her departure comes a few days after that of another key marketing exec, Michael Engleman, who was Chief Marketing Officer at Paramount+ Domestic and Paramount+ with Showtime.

Paramount last Thursday confirmed deep cutbacks are coming soon, with 15% of the U.S. workforce to exit before the end of the year. The new round of layoffs are set to begin Tuesday. Paramount management has said it is aiming to generate $500 million in annual savings.

A second top marketing executive is departing Paramount Global.

Sabrina Caluori, executive vp kids and family marketing for Nickelodeon and Paramount+, is leaving the company. Her departure follows that of Paramount+ and Showtime chief marketing officer Michael Engleman, and comes at a time when Paramount is looking at large numbers of layoffs ahead of its merger with Skydance.

Caluori has been at Nickelodeon for three years and was elevated to her current position in 2022. In a note to staff (read it in full below), she says Nick “was the very first brand that I loved” and praised her team for their recent work.

Nickelodeon and Paramount+ head of global kids and family marketing Sabrina Caluori is exiting her role two years after being upped to the position, Variety has learned.

Caluori’s departure comes at a time of great upheaval at Paramount, following last week’s announcement that the company will be laying off 15% of its staff — approximately 2,000 employees — ahead of its planned acquisition by Skydance Media.

In July 2022, Caluori was elevated to executive vice president and head of marketing and brand strategy at Nickelodeon upon the exit of then-chief marketing officer Jenny Wall. In her role, Caluori led on- and off-air consumer marketing and content launches globally across the brand’s linear, digital and social platforms, reporting to Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon and chief content officer of kids and family content for Paramount+.

Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney have announced their departures from the cast of Saturday Night Live. There is no word as to any further departures from the cast ahead of season 50. At the time of writing, Johnson and Kearney's next steps are unknown.

Two cast members have left Saturday Night Live after season 49. The long-running NBC sketch comedy show was created by Lorne Michaels and originally began airing in 1975, featuring guest hosts and musicians along with live and pre-recorded sketches performed by a rotating cast of comedy performers. So far, no hosts or musical guests have been announced for the landmark season 50, but former SNL cast member Maya Rudolph has reportedly been set to return to reprise her role as Presidential nominee Kamala Harris through the end of the 2024 election.

On their respective official Instagram accounts, both Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney announced their departures from the cast of Saturday Night Live.

Paramount Global lost $490 million from streaming in the final quarter of 2023, when Paramount+ added 4.1 million subscribers. The service now has 67.5 million subs; it is now expected to turn a profit in the U.S. in 2025.

Paramount+ revenue jumped 69 percent from the same quarter last year thanks to price hikes and that sub growth. The overall company fell a bit shy of Wall Street’s revenue mark but turned a slight profit. Though Q4 advertising revenue rose at Paramount’s streaming segment, the growth was nowhere near the line-item’s decline at linear TV.

Losses from (mostly) Paramount+ are nothing new. Paramount lost $238 million from its streaming business in the prior quarter (and $424 million in Q2 and a $511 million in Q1), when it gained 2.7 million Paramount+ subs. The "Oscat" award recipients have been announced by PETA.

Annually, PETA honors "outstanding achievements in animal advocacy" through what is known as the Oscat Awards. These are awarded to various movies, TV shows, filmmakers, and actors who've promoted kindness to animals through their work. PETA had previously celebrated Ryan Gosling's Ken for wearing faux fur in Barbie, so it's no surprise that one of the Oscats goes to the hit film. Barbie has been given the Best Fauxjo Mojo Fashion Moments award, with PETA praising costume designer Jacqueline Durran for her work on Margot Robbie's vegan pink Birkenstocks and faux fur boots and with Gosling's vegan leather cowboy boots and "Fauxjo Mojo Mink" fur-free coat.

Mindy Kaling’s new Netflix comedy series set in the world of pro basketball has added five new cast members, Variety has learned.

The new cast members are: Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, and Roberto Sanchez.

They join previously announced series lead Kate Hudson in the show, along with cast members Brenda Song, Drew Tarver and Scott MacArthur. The untitled series received a 10-episode order at Netflix in June 2021.

The official logline for the series states, “When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. CBS has revealed the full list of nominations and hosts for the 26th annual Family Film and TV Awards planned for January 27.

The Talk‘s Akbar Gbajabiamila and Amanda Kloots will host the awards show that will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Originally produced by Dick Clark and initially broadcast on CBS in 1996, the awards recognize the significance of family entertainment.

A panel of industry experts, celebrities and Popstar! magazine readers will select the winners from 11 categories during the broadcast.
