Netflix is adding 11 movies and series this week
Image
Netflix adds more gripping thriller series, more true crime, comedy, and as always, a show for the kids. I'm not sure, but I believe those are all separate entries. Let's dive in and find out.

You can always rely on Netflix for shows that will absolutely freak you out, amiright? For me, it's usually the bizarre kiddie shows. Yeah, I know that for some people, it's those behind-the-scenes investigations of some sordid true crime. The great thing about your favorite streaming service is that they have something for everyone. And wow, is that ever true this week.

Based on their taglines, the penultimate offerings this week seem like they've been stolen from the Hallmark and Lifetime channels. I mean, two of the three movies involve widows. You know that's the main character in every other movie on those channels.

Then again, if they were that cheesy, they would be on...

The Weeknd's Thriller Movie With 13% Rt On Track For Box Office Failure After Underwhelming Debut
Image
The poorly reviewed new thriller movie starring The Weeknd is on track for a disappointing theatrical run. The musical artist, whose non-stage name is Abel Tesfaye, has won four Grammy Awards and earned six No. 1 hits, including "Can't Feel My Face," "Starboy," "Save Your Tears," and "Blinding Lights." One of those hits, "Earned It," was released as part of the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack and earned the star an Oscar nomination, though he lost to Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes for the song "Writing's on the Wall" from Spectre.

In recent years, Tesfaye has been increasingly exploring the world of film and television. In addition to appearing as himself in the Adam Sandler thriller Uncut Gems in 2019, he has voiced characters in The Simpsons and American Dad!, similarly playing himself in the latter series. His most notable onscreen contribution is the HBO drama The Idol, which he co-created with...

Paul Rudd's New Comedy With Tim Robinson Earns a Rotten Tomatoes Score Almost Double 'Death of a Unicorn's
Image
Writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s Friendship, featuring Tim Robinson in his first starring film role, boasts a strong supporting cast, including the likes of Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, and Jack Dylan Grazer. The movie's limited May 9 theatrical release, followed by a wide release on May 23, marks the second A24 flick to head to theaters in quick succession for Rudd, with Death of a Unicorn failing to capture audience imagination. Earning just $15 million at the global box office to date, which is only just enough to recoup the film's reported production budget, a 54% on review Rotten Tomatoes solidifies just how poorly Death of a Unicorn has performed.

Thankfully for Rudd, the upcoming Friendship will look to turn the tide on his A24 fortune, with early reviews of the movie on the aforementioned review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes seeing the film earn a huge 91% critic approval rating, almost double the score achieved by Death of a Unicorn.

How Will Poulter Went From Conscientious Objector to Soldier of Fortune in ‘Warfare’
Image
After 20 years in the business, there are a few things that Will Poulter has noticed about his public perception, and they’ve been coming up a lot lately. The first is that few people can accept the fact that he really is British. When he appeared in a surprise guest role on season two of The Bear as the soft-spoken and heavily tattooed English pastry chef Luca, his West London accent was so authentic, nobody believed it was real. He remembers getting a review in which the critic wrote “Will Poulter does his best attempt at a British accent …”

“People are also commenting on my height,” he goes on, referencing the second thing the public gets wrong about him. “Everyone says, ‘You’re taller than I thought you’d be.’ I never know what to say — I grew up short, and it very much formed my entire personality. So, I...

Image
Sunday Am Writethru: Like a huntsman lurking around in the woods, Jason Statham’s A Working Man scared Disney’s Snow White into second place at the office, $15.2M to $14.2M.

Captain America: Brave New World Worldwide Box Office: Surpasses The $400 Million+ Global Haul Of Eternals
Image
Captain America: Brave New World Worldwide Box Office: Beats Eternals’ Global Run (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Captain America: Brave New World is slowly achieving new milestones at the worldwide box office. It has crossed the global haul of one of the MCU’s controversial movies, Eternals. The film is controversial because it did not earn as much as other films and was also not met with positive reviews. Anthony Mackie’s film is trying its best not to become one of the five lowest-grossing MCU films.

Eternals was released in 2021 and featured a grand cast of the top Hollywood stars. It featured Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. The MCU movie featured the immortal beings who came out of hiding after thousands of years to protect Earth from their ancient counterparts, the Deviants.

Box Office: ‘A Working Man’ Hammers in $5.6 Million Opening Day in Race Against ‘Snow White’ for No. 1
Image
Disney’s “Snow White” remake may melt enough in its second weekend for Amazon MGM’s actioner “A Working Man” to open on top of the box office. The close match-up for first will only yield a modest prize though, as other new features like A24’s “Death of a Unicorn” and Universal’s “The Woman in the Yard” post more muted openings.

“A Working Man” led the way on Friday, earning $5.6 million across its opening day and preview screenings from 3,262 locations. The R-rated action conspiracy thriller, which sees Jason Statham reteaming with director David Ayer just over a year after the pair bowed “The Beekeeper,” is also getting boosted ticket prices from some premium large-format auditoriums like Dolby and 4Dx.

Now projecting a $15.6 million debut, “Working Man” is pacing a touch behind the $16 million opening weekend earned by “The Beekeeper” in January 2024, which later posted a strong multiplier and...

‘Death of a Unicorn’ Filmmaker Talks Jenna Ortega’s Well-Timed Casting and Robert Eggers’ Influence
Image
Death of a Unicorn’s Alex Scharfman knows he’s fortunate to be able to say that his feature directorial debut is an A24 film that’s led by Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. But the writer-director has more than paid his dues the last 15-plus years, mainly as a producer, all while refining the craft of screenwriting. Along the way, Rudd, through their shared manager, took notice of a Scharfman-penned script called The Cats of Baxley, which Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey had possession of at the time. From there, Rudd indirectly encouraged Scharfman to write something with him in mind, and that something eventually took on the form of Death of a Unicorn.

The creature feature centers around father-daughter, Elliot (Rudd) and Ridley Kintner (Jenna Ortega), as they journey to the mountainside lodge of Elliot’s Sackler-esque employer, the Leopolds. While en route to the intimate company retreat,...

‘Death of a Unicorn’ Makes Use of the Violent, Delightful History of a Monstrous Myth
Image
Citizens of Louisiana only have to look up at their state flag to see an animal doing some pretty wild — and deeply symbolic — stuff out of a medieval bestiary. But the goal of A24’s “Death of a Unicorn” is to craft a fresh creature feature out of a very old understanding of the mythological horned horses.

It might be a surprise to some folks to learn just how often murderous unicorns have been considered in myth. Just because that hasn’t been our cultural understanding of them in the last 50 years or so — instead, we’re used to seeing them in a sparkly, Lisa Frank-esque lighter — director Alex Scharfman reasoned there was a lot of room to surprise audiences with the unicorn’s “true” nature.

“There’s a great Jorge Luis Borges quote from his ‘Book of Imaginary Beings’ where he says the first unicorn story is almost identical to the latest,...

Death Of A Unicorn – Review
Image
First off, here’s a big warning to parents looking for family-friendly fantasy flicks: this “ain’t one of those. Yes, I know that “word” in the main title caught your eye, but don’t be misled. The title’s first word should provide a hint, along with the studio producing and releasing it, the “off kilter” current “indie” studio “darling”, A24. No, it’s a satire of current events that involves the mythical title creation, a critter that’s a staple on kids’ clothing and decor. And, as with many monster movies, modern-day tech can’t really dominate the magical legends from humanity’s earliest (thousands of years) days. Films have explored this idea in “fairy tale fable fear-flicks” about mermaids and genies (or the djinn). With this week’s release, we find out what kind of carnage ensues after the Death Of A Unicorn.

The story begins on...

‘Death of a Unicorn’ Star Anthony Carrigan Talks Silent Comedy and James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Tone
Image
By the time Anthony Carrigan’s Emmy-nominated run on Barry concluded in 2023, he’d already reaffirmed his independent and blockbuster ambitions to his reps.

The Massachusetts native wasted no time turning those desires into reality, beginning with A24’s Death of a Unicorn and followed by James Gunn’s Superman. The former, which marks the feature directorial debut of writer-director Alex Scharfman, is the latest of many examples in which the powerhouse indie studio has attracted top-tier talent for its interesting, unconventional choices and taste. The comedic creature feature boasts yet another decorated cast, as Carrigan stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni and Richard E. Grant.

Carrigan plays Griff, the aggrieved butler to the Sackler-esque pharma family, the Leopolds, who invite their lawyer, Elliot Kintner (Rudd), and his daughter, Ridley (Ortega), for a retreat at their mountainside lodge. Along the way,...

'Death of a Unicorn' Review: Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd Lead a Sharp-Horned Satire Against Big Pharma
Image
The unicorn. A fantastical creature that has adorned fantasy book covers, childhood bedrooms, mousepads, and just about anything you can think of. But in Alex Scharfman's monster comedyDeath of a Unicorn, the horned equestrian is portrayed as a misunderstood, but still oh-so-vicious killing machine. Much like Cocaine Bear,Death of a Unicorn takes the conventions of a monster movie, and splatters blood and gore onto the walls, while still being incredibly silly. What makes Death of a Unicorn go the extra mile is also the massive heart it wears on its sleeve.

10 Anime Franchises That Have Deeper Lore Than Star Wars & Lord of the Rings
Image
George Lucas and J.R.R. Tolkien created incredible fantasy universes that defined generations of storytelling. But while Western fans debate whether the Silmarils outshine kyber crystals, anime has quietly put forth fantastic franchises so steeped in lore they could dwarf Middle-earth.

The best anime franchises, no matter how many entries they have, stand out for constructing living mythologies that aren't afraid to bend and break the audience's—or its characters'—preconceived notions about the world. From cosmic hierarchies to multiversal rewrites, these ten anime franchises pack enough metaphysical weight to challenge and perhaps surpass the Western world's most beloved IP giants, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

Paradise Show: Cal’s Mixtape & All The Soundtracks In Season 1, Explained
Image
Hulu’s latest sleeper hit, Paradise, belongs to the mystery box category of TV shows, a genre that explores the puzzling causality of events in the story, building its exclusive mythos set in a controlled environment—occasionally isolated from the rest of the world. A key motif of the genre, reflected in shows like From, Silo, and Lost too, is the way the makers try to use the background score and soundtrack to enhance the narrative treatment—by creating an enigmatic effect or hinting at what’s to come and motivations of the characters. This is most prominently reflected in David Lynch’s masterpiece, Twin Peaks, both the movies and series, where Angelo Badalamenti composed themes and scores that did justice to Lynch’s surreal vision. The importance of music as a suggestive narrative device is also realized in Paradise, as composer Siddhartha Khosla’s usage of background scores and tracks suggests.

Fictionhouse Closing: Newen-Backed UK Drama Label Winding Down As Founders Dominic Cooke & Kate Horton Pursue Solo Projects
Image
Exclusive: UK drama producer Fictionhouse, founded by Dominic Cooke and Kate Horton, is closing its doors with the pair both pursuing their own theater projects.

The pair set up Fictionhouse in 2020 with a remit to work up projects across film, stage and TV. They had previously worked together during a prolific spell at the Royal Court Theatre, and both were also at the UK’s National Theatre.

Fictionhouse is ultimately part of Newen Studios, the production and distribution group owned by French broadcast giant TF1. Newen, which is about to be rebadged as Studio TF1, confirmed to Deadline that Fictionhouse is shuttering.

Newen’s investment in Fictionhouse was originally made through Ringside Media, an investment arm of Gub Neal and Kate Bennetts’ Newen-backed Ringside Studios label, which made Liaison for Apple.

Neither Cooke or Horton would comment when contacted by Deadline. It is understood the former will focus on freelance directing.

Why Unicorn In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Sounds Familiar
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Halfway through season 1 and "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" has been gladly drafting its supporting characters and villains from all corners of Marvel Comics. Peter Parker's (Hudson Thames) best friend Nico Minoru (Grace Song) is from "The Runaways," and his schoolboy crush isn't Mary Jane Watson or Liz Allan -- it's Pearl Pangan (Cathy Ang). In the comics, Pearl is a recently-introduced water-themed superhero named Wave. Time will tell if her animated self takes on that identity, or if Nico will become a sorcerer.

The people who do have super-abilities are the series villains, the latest one being Unicorn/Mila Masaryk. True to her name, she can blast an energy beam from a helmet she wears. In this version, the weapon is supplied by Doctor Otto Octavius (Hugh Dancy). Complementing the Unicorn imagery, Mila wears her hair in a mane-like mohawk.

Gundam's Strongest Mecha Pilot of All Time Wins Landslide Victory in Official Survey

Throughout the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, some Gundam pilots in the various anime have become more popular than others. Now, a recent Japanese poll has decided the strongest of these mecha anime characters, although many fans can likely predict the results.

Featuring characters such as Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, Domon Kasshu and others, the poll looked at the best Gundam pilot of them all. Receiving nearly 25,000 votes, the poll included characters from across the franchise's 46-year-history. ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’ Brokerage Gets Feature Doc Treatment From Campfire & Jed Rothstein
Image
Exclusive: Jordan Belfort, the real-life Wolf of Wall Street, who was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s movie, set up Stratton Oakmont in the late ‘80s with Danny Porush.

This brokerage, which participated in pump-and-dump schemes as it defrauded shareholders, is set to be the subject of a new feature documentary from the team behind Hulu’s WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn doc.

Campfire Studios, which was also behind Netflix’s The Menendez Brothers doc and Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, has teamed up with director Jed Rothstein for the untitled doc.

It will chart the real story of the notorious brokerage firm, which closed in 1996 before its founders were indicted for securities fraud and money laundering. It will feature first-hand accounts from the people who made the firm tick and highlight Stratton Oakmont’s suspiciously successful and calamitous seven years in operation, and the lasting effect on its employees,...

Death Of A Unicorn: Cast, Story & Everything We Know About The Jenna Ortega & Paul Rudd A24 Movie
Image
Death of a Unicorn is an upcoming A24 horror comedy and there have been some exciting updates about the film. Joining the increasingly unmatchable stable of A24 horror movies like Hereditary, The Witch, and Pearl, while also dabbling in A24 style comedy like Zola, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Disaster Artist, Death of a Unicorn looks to bridge two genres the studio excels at. Unrelated to Peter Dickinson's 1984 novel of the same name, Death of a Unicorn is shaping up to be a hit for horror and comedy fans.

Since 2023, news has been slowly rolling out about the movie with the unusual and exciting name. So far, it looks like A24 may have once again produced something wildly unique and enjoyable with some of the biggest stars working. Despite the interest in the film, and A24's trailer, which suggests the movie is far along in post-production,...

Emily Blunt: Net Worth, Age, Height & Everything You Need To Know About The Actress
Image
Emily Blunt has been considered at the top of her craft for almost two decades, so it's not surprising that the lauded actress would have a high net worth. The British star broke out in Hollywood in 2006, playing ice-cold assistant Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Blunt found herself at the top of the A-list, and the 2010s saw her starring in several sci-fi films, including The Adjustment Bureau and Edge of Tomorrow. In 2023, Blunt received her first Oscar nomination for playing Kitty Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

Blunt was born in Wandsworth, London, England to parents Joanna and Oliver, and is the second of four children. She was discovered by an agent while performing at a school play at the Edinburgh Festival, and has been acting on camera since 2003. Offscreen, Blunt was in a relationship with Canadian crooner Michael Bublé...

Dream Productions Reimagines Several Common Sleep Occurrences - And Makes Them Extra Horrifying
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Dream Productions.Dream Productions takes several normal dream occurrences and makes them surprisingly frightening. The four-episode Disney+ series is set between Inside Out and Inside Out 2 and builds on the concept of Dream Productions that was introduced in the first movie. Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and the other original emotions are in the series, but Dream Productions' cast of characters most prominently features dream directors Paula Persimmon (Paula Pell) and Xeni (Richard Ayoade), who are forced to work together.

Seasoned director Paula clashes with the young and ambitious daydream director Xeni, as they have polar opposite ideas about the kinds of dreams that are best for Riley (Kensington Tallman). Their conflict, and how Dream Productions' leader, Jean Dewberry (Maya Rudolph) attempts to correct course, leads to nearly disastrous results that unfold in Dream Productions' ending. While the worst-case scenario is ultimately averted,...

The 10 Best JRPGs of 2024 Worth Playing

2023 was a great year for Japanese RPGs and I didn’t think 2024 was going to match it. But I’m glad I was wrong. A peculiar trend of the video game industry in 2024 was the prolificness of remakes and remasters, and the Japanese RPG is no different. A few select publishers and developers dominated this year too, as they pumped out so many quality games. James Krishna Floyd on Moving Into the Director’s Chair for His Multi-bifa Nominated Debut ‘Unicorns’
Image
Unicorns, co-directed by James Krishna Floyd and Sally El Hosaini, is smashing the 2024 British Independent Film Awards with seven nominations across the board – including the all-import BBC Film sponsored Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director) which we here at Dn are partnering with BIFA on – and it’s clear to see why. Unicorns is at its heart a romance drama but one that engulfs us in the radiant, unapologetic and fierce subculture of drag and the gaysian community. Floyd has brought his self-professed “creative baby” to audiences in a time where identity, the shedding of conformist layers and being able to explore who you are is more important than ever. Unicorns is a film about acceptance, not only of others but of ourselves, and treats this with consideration, care and authenticity which was heavily informed by Floyd’s direct knowledge and long-time friendship with Britain’s first out Muslim drag...

Anime's Biggest Franchises Already Prove How My Hero Academia Can Continue After its Ending
Image
My Hero Academia's impending completion doesn't mean the end - spin-offs and media expansions are likely to keep the franchise alive. Shueisha's history of pushing for side stories indicates a strong interest and investment in the My Hero Academia setting. With recognizable characters and widespread popularity, it's safe to assume that My Hero Academia will see more continuations to cash in on its success.

While Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia is drawing to a close, fans need not worry about any abrupt disappearance of the immensely popular superhero manga. Though it is winding down with its epilogue section, it's hard to imagine Shueisha closing the book on one of its most popular properties to date. If nothing else, the likes of Gundam or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure prove that such IPs can find more life outside the manga format.

Fans of My Hero Academia are likely to feel...
