Dechen Roder (1980) is one of Bhutan’s pioneering female directors. She began her filmmaking career in 2009 with her production company, Dakinny Productions, making documentaries and short videos. Her debut feature, “Honeygiver Among the Dogs” (2017), premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and won three awards at the Fribourg International Film Festival. It also became the first Bhutanese film nominated for the Pacific Screen Award. Roder also co-founded Bhutan’s only film festival, the Beskop Tshechu Film Festival.

Her latest feature, “I, the Song,” premiered at the 28th Tallinn Black Night’s Film Festival under the Critic’s Pick Competition, where she was awarded Best Director.

Country’s biggest stars gathered in Nashville Thursday night to kick off the first-ever People’s Choice Country Awards.

Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Hardy, and Jelly Roll are the top nominees at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, airing live Sept. 28 from Nashville’s Opry House, the home of the Grand Ole Opry.

Wallen leads the field with 11 nominations, including multiple nods in categories like The Song of 2023 (“Last Night,” “Thinkin’ About Me”) and The Collaboration Song of 2023 (“Cowgirls” featuring Ernest, “Red” with Hardy, who picked up nine nominations). Wallen is also up for The People’s Artist of 2023, Male Artist of 2023, and The Album of 2023 for One Thing at a Time.

Last week, Bad Bunny became the first Latin artist to headline Coachella. During his Weekend 2 set, the Puerto Rican rapper kept the celebration going, enlisting several Puerto Rican and Mexican artists to honor their Latin heritage.

After welcoming Mexican band Grupo Frontera, Bad Bunny left the stage to allow the group to perform “un x100to,” “No Se Va,” and “Bebe Dame.” The rapper returned to the stage in full ranchero attire to sing his part of the first track, a collaboration between the artists they just unveiled last week.

From there, Puerto Rican rapper Ñengo Flow and reggaeton duo Jowell & Randy joined Bad Bunny for “Safaera,” and rapper Jhayco came out to perform “Dákiti,” “Tarot,” and his own song “No Me Conoce.” The legendary musician José Feliciano also made an appearance, joining Bad Bunny for “La Canción” and “Yonaguni.”

Bong Joon Ho’s Palme d’Or winner Parasite won the best feature film prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (Apsa) which were held in Brisbane, Australian on November 21.

The selected titles were chosen from 401 submissions from 69 countries, an increase of 30% on 2017.

Amongst the titles are Gong Wen’s Without End, Without Doubt, produced by China’s Jia Zhangke, and Japanese director Yukisado Isao’s Soundtrack Of An Eternal Day.

Debra Granik, Romain Gavras, Ciro Guerra and Gaspar Noe are among the directors whose films will be included in the 50th Directors’ Fortnight, an independent sidebar that will run concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Granik will go to Cannes with “Leave No Trace,” her first narrative film since the Oscar-nominated “Winter’s Bone” in 2010, and a film that received strong reviews when it premiered at Sundance in January.

Gavras, best known for his videos for M.I.A., Kanye West and Jay-z and others, will be there with “Le monde est a toi,” while Guerra and his co-director Cristina Gallego, who made the Oscar-nominated “Embrace of the Serpent,” will bring “Birds of Passage” to Directors’ Fortnight.

Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Realisateurs) was established in 1969, in the aftermath of a 1968 Cannes Film Festival that was canceled midway through in solidarity with the protests sweeping through France. It was set up to offer a more daring and experimental slate than the main festival, and over the years provided the first Cannes exposure for such directors as Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog, Michael Haneke and Spike Lee.

Directors’ Fortnight will open on May 9 and run through May 19.

Music is at the core of two new Specialty features making their theatrical bows this weekend, albeit from rather different ends of the spectrum. The characters of the upcoming romance drama, ‘The Song,’ are chasing their dreams of launching successful music careers and being with their true loves in the film’s new trailer. Samuel Goldwyn Films, which released the trailer, will distribute the musical movie on September 26 in theaters. ‘The Song’ features an up-and-coming cast, including Alan Powell, the lead singer of the popular band Anthem Lights, as well as ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn’ star Ali Faulkner and ‘Nashville’ cast member Caitlin Nicol-Thomas. Well Go USA Entertainment closes Us deal for Zak Hilditch’s Cannes title.

Well Go USA Entertainmentis closing a deal to take the Us rights for These Final Hours, a thriller by first-time Australian director Zak Hilditch, who also wrote the film. Celluloid Nightmares is selling the international rights.

The film, which plays in Cannes in the Director’s Fortnight strand, will have a limited theatrical release later this year.

The film tells the story of a self-obsessed man, who on his way to the party-to-end-all-parties on the last day on Earth, ends up saving the life of a little girl searching for her father. The relationship between the two ultimately leads him on the path to redemption.

Roadshow Films is set to release the film wide in Australia on July 31.
