Justice League Dark

Joseph Kahn shares concept art from his Justice League Dark pitch
Justice League was not the money maker or critical success Warner Bros. needed it to be, and the response to it may even affect how the studio approaches their superhero movies in the future. There are plenty more movies the studio wants to crank out, and one that’s had a particularly hard time getting going is Justice League Dark. The movie has had a hard time getting a live-action film... Read More...

Justice League Dark concept art & character designs surface
Mike Cecchini Dec 18, 2017

Get a look at what Guillermo del Toro's Justice League Dark movie might have looked like.

The Justice League Dark movie has had a long and tortured road, and there's no end in sight. This is a project which would focus on the magical and monstrous corners of the Dceu, featuring characters like Swamp Thing, John Constantine, and others, and it has been in development at Warner Bros for something on the order of five years. For much of that time, Guillermo del Toro was in charge of development, with an eye on directing.

But as with many of Warner Bros' DC superhero movies, nothing has been easy when it comes to Justice League Dark. For one thing, it was once known as Dark Universe, but Universal came along and snatched that name up for their (now apparently dead) shared cinematic universe of action/horror flicks...

Warner Bros. Reveals Their Updated Slate of DC Films
Over the weekend during Comic Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Warner Bros. revealed its upcoming slate of DC Films that they'll be releasing.

We weren't really sure what exactly the future held for the DC Films after Justice League was released, but now we know. Most of the original plan is still in place, but there are a few films that weren't mentioned this time around.

The upcoming film slate includes Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2, Flashpoint, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad 2, Batgirl, Shazam!, Green Lantern Corps, and The Batman. These films were apparently all presented with title cards.

The films that weren't included are the previously announced Cyborg movie, the Justice League sequel, Gotham City Sirens, the Harley Quinn and Joker movie, the Joker origin film, Black Adam and the Deathstroke film, which was teased at the end of Justice League. The fact these films weren't mentioned doesn't mean that they aren't still in development.

Warner Bros. Reveals Their Full Slate Of DC Extended Universe Films
It feels unreal to even think that Justice League is the lowest-grossing Dceu movie. It was meant to be the culmination of years of hard work and the granddaddy that reached the billion-dollar club. Instead, Warner Bros. is sweating and worried if it’ll break even and not suffer any further humiliation.

Regardless of your feelings towards the film, it’s evident that the studio will need some time to introspect and rethink its future plans. That being said, they still do intend on pushing full steam ahead with most of their previously announced projects, and they made that known earlier today at Comic-Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil by revealing their full DC Extended Universe slate.

According to those who were in attendance at the studio’s presentation, the Wonder Woman sequel was announced first, followed by Aquaman, two films that we already knew were on the way. After that,...

Here’s Your First Look At Constantine In DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow
Ever since he first crossed over into the Arrowverse back in an episode of Arrow season 4, fans have been crying out for Matt Ryan to make a return appearance as John Constantine. At last, it was recently confirmed that the demon hunter would be turning up for a multi-episode arc in Legends of Tomorrow season 3. And now, thanks to exec producer Marc Guggenheim, we have our first look at Constantine on the show.

Guggenheim shared a photo of a screen playing LoT in the editing room, revealing a shot of Constantine paired up with Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer/the Atom. It’s not much, but we’ll take what we can get and given that this is now out in the open, we imagine there will be more to come in no time at all.

As we previously reported, Constantine will appear in episode 10, titled “Daddy Darhkest.” Yes, this...

Deathstroke Movie Is Happening with Joe Manganiello
Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Robert Pattinson, and Zoë Kravitz in The Batman (2022)
Another unexpected development in the world of DC Comics live-action movie adaptations has just arrived. According to a new report, director Gareth Evans, best known for his work on the acclaimed action movie The Raid, is in talks to helm a Deathstroke spin-off movie for Warner Bros. At the present time, not much else has been revealed, but Joe Manganiello, who was originally supposed to play the role in The Batman, is attached to play the fan-favorite mercenary in the movie.

Last year, Ben Affleck made a lot of DC fans excited when he released some shaky test footage of Deathstroke while filming Justice League. It was later revealed that the man donning the classic black and orange armor was none other than True Blood and Magic Mike star Joe Manganiello. It was also revealed that, at the time, the character was set to be the main villain in The Batman,...

Watch a Group of Monsters Get in a Bloody Battle in First Clip The Constantine Animated Series
DC Entertainment has released a clip from their upcoming new animated series Constantine, giving us our first look at the animated version of the character in action. The series actually looks a lot better than what I was expecting! The animation is pretty solid and it's great to see Matt Ryan bringing the demon hunting character to life again. I always like Matt Rayn in this role. He brought the perfect kind of attitude and charm to the character that you can't help but like.

In the clip, we see John Constantine bring a bunch of demons together in a church where they proceed to battle each other to a bloody pulp.

Constantine Confirmed To Appear In Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3, Animated Series Trailer Debuts
When Matt Ryan debuted on NBC’s live action Constantine series a few years back, most fans were in agreement that the producers had found the best live action Hellblazer possible. Unfortunately, the network didn’t think ratings were up to snuff and cancelled the show after only 13 episodes. On the plus side, Ryan has since continued playing the character in various other projects, those being Arrow, Justice League Dark and an animated web series slated for release via the CW Seed online streaming service (see the above trailer).

Naturally, one would think a show such as Legends of Tomorrow would provide a decent way for John Constantine to rejoin the Arrowverse due to its ability to pluck DC heroes and villains from wherever they may exist on the timestream. In fact, executive producer and showrunner Phil Klemmer expressed interest in doing so in an interview a couple months ago.

The Joker Origins Movie Already Has A Completed Script, May Shoot In 2018
DC fans had their minds blown when it was announced a month ago that an origins movie for the Joker was in the works. Sitting outside the DC Extended Universe, the film is set to feature a new actor as the Clown Prince of Crime in place of Jared Leto. Furthermore, The Hangover’s Todd Phillips is directing with legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese on hand to produce.

Still, there wasn’t initially any guarantee that the project would see the light of day anytime soon. After all, plenty of other DC films have been announced only to never end up materializing (see: Lobo and Justice League Dark). That won’t be the case for The Joker, though, as we’re now hearing that it’s being fast-tracked into production.

Variety’s Justin Kroll confirmed via Twitter that sources have informed him the script is set to be handed in to Warner Bros. next week.

Kingsman Director Confirms Man of Steel 2 Talks
Henry Cavill in Man of Steel (2013)
The DC Extended Universe seems to be in much better shape following the massive success of Wonder Woman. So, does that mean we're finally going to see Man of Steel 2 happen? We know that Warner Bros. has been working on a standalone Superman movie for a while, but official information has been pretty scarce. We had heard rumors that Kingsman and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn was in the running for the gig. Now, the director himself has confirmed that he very well may be the man to tackle Man of Steel 2.

Matthew Vaughn is currently promoting Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which is set to arrive in theaters next week. Speaking with Hey U Guys, the director was asked about what he is planning to do now that Kingsman 2 is done and he revealed that he has met with Warner Bros. about possibly helming the Man of Steel sequel.

Justice League Dark: Housebound's Gerard Johnstone Brought in to Spruce up Script
A quick note was dropped last night that Warner Bros. has brought in Housebound's Gerard Johnstone to polish up the script for Justice League Dark.    The WB are still looking for a director for the new film that centers around the characters John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. According to the report at Deadline the studio was already impressed with his horror comedy Housebound, which got him in the door. His presentation did the rest.    We wonder if this suggests the tone that WB is going for with this upcoming project. Housebound was a excellent blend of horror and laughs. We are not suggesting that Jld should be laugh a minute but Johnstone's comedic instincts should at the very...

Warner Bros. Brings on New Writer to "Polish" Justice League Dark Script
At one time Warner Bros. had Gerard Johnstone on their short list of directors for Justice League Dark, but now the studio has been tapped him to polish the script.

Variety reports that the studio was interested in Johnstone touching up the script based on his presentation on the project. The studio has been looking at directors over the past couple of months after Doug Liman left the project to focus on Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking. They haven't really liked anything that they have been pitched, though.

Little is know about the plot of Justice League Dark, in the comic books the “Dark Universe” focuses on the supernatural superhero team of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon. The film will play a major role in the DC Cinematic Universe.

This could be a pretty interesting-type of superhero movie that we really have yet to see in...

Godzilla vs Kong Will Have An Older King Kong
This year marked the return of the King Kong franchise, after a 12-year absence Kong: Skull Island hit theaters earlier this year. With its retro 70s setting and a well-rounded cast that included Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly, the film pulled in over half a billion dollars worldwide on a $185 million dollar budget. SlashFilm recently spoke with Adam Wingard, the director of the next film we will see Kong in, Godzilla vs. Kong. Wingard was asked if the new film set for release in 2020 would stay with the 70’s timeline we seen in Kong: Skull Island.

No, ours is more in continuity with the sequel to Godzilla right now. They’re doing Godzilla 2 with Mike Dougherty directing, so our film is in present day. We have a couple characters from Godzilla 2 in ours, but it’ll be interesting to see how Kong has fared over the years.

American Horror Story: Cult Trailer: Election Night Brings Out The Clowns
This upcoming season of American Horror Story is set to be a unique one. For the past six seasons, they’ve managed to (mostly) successfully utilize a unique theme and exploit it for maximum horror. This year’s season deals with a more grounded horror — the recent U.S. presidential election.

But don’t worry. This isn’t going to be some House of Cards-type story. Nor will it actually have actors portraying Trump and Clinton in ridiculous ways. They will instead utilize news footage to show the actual election and (we’re assuming) debates. The actual story will take place after the election, and is kicked off by the results of said election.

As indicated by the trailer, it sounds like some real unsavory types are super enthused about the results of Trump taking office (including a TV-humping Evan Peters). One such group is a “cult” of clowns that have been emboldened,...

James Gunn Says Marvel's Cosmic Universe Films Won't All Feel Like Guardians Of The Galaxy
The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has made a huge impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only did it confirm that Marvel can pretty much make a good movie out of any concept, but it also pioneered a more colorful, over-the-top style that Marvel Studios is now taking advantage of. While it’s likely not a total influence on the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok (that film's style and tone is likely due to director Taika Waititi's own sensibilities), it’s likely a tone Marvel was more willing to explore after Guardians’ success.

But what does this mean for the McU as it begins to foray deeper and deeper into the cosmic side of things? Will every film set in the farthest reaches of space have a very similar tone? Given that James Gunn is reportedly helping to usher in Marvel Studios’ era of cosmic films, Collider thought to ask him that very question.

Legends Of Tomorrow Showrunners Want Matt Ryan To Play Constantine In Season 3
DC's greatest live-action television series has been canceled since 2015, yet the character at its center continues to live on. I am, of course, referring to Constantine, the NBC series that ran for only one season ending with a cliffhanger never-the-less. Constantine was great because certain episodes, including "A Feast of Friends", were incredibly true to specific storylines from the Hellblazer comic, with the show never shying away from the horror elements of John Constantine's world. The show's greatest strength, however, was the casting of Matt Ryan as Constantine, which remains among the most accurate casting for a superhero adaptation in any medium.

Ryan was so good that he's been brought back to conquer the role several times. First, Ryan donned the ratty jacket and tie again in the episode of Arrow titled Haunted, before voicing the character in DC's best animated feature, 2017's Justice League Dark. Ryan will also...

Warner Bros. Announces They Are Making Flashpoint!!!
With the Warner Bros. always in direct competition with Marvel on Saturday at Comic-con, they are forced to bring out their big guns.

This was the case when they brought out the DC properties. During the panel the studio announced their upcoming slate of superhero movies in a video persentation. They went over the previously announced movies like Green Lantern Corps, Justice League Dark, Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2; they hit us with the title of the upcoming Flash movie. Freaking Flashpoint!

That's right folks, the creative minds at DC are giving The Flash the most complicated/entertaining storyline in all of The Flash's history. Flashpoint revolves around The Flash's power to run so fast that he can manipulate time and the consequences that come with it.

If they stick with the comic arc then it will be in a world where Barry Allen (The Flash) wakes up and the world has changed.

Newswire: DC’s next animated feature might be an adaptation of Gotham By Gaslight
Though DC oddly seems to forget about this every single time that it happens, each direct-to-video animated movie that it releases inadvertently spoils what the next direct-to-video animated movie will be about. It happened when The Killing Joke DVD revealed the existence of Justice League Dark, and now the Batman & Harley Quinn DVD that comes out next month seems to have named Gotham By Gaslight as the next DC animated movie. That comes from a sharp-eyed Reddit user (via ComicBook.com), who somehow spotted the back cover of the Batman & Harley Quinn DVD and noticed a preview for Batman: Gotham By Gaslight listed in the special features.

For those who aren’t familiar with the original story, Gotham By Gaslight was a one-off Batman story from Brian Augustyn and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. It was released in 1989, and though it predates the official label, it’s considered ...
