Burt Young, Who Played Paulie in ‘Rocky’ Films, Dies at 83
Image
Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.

Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”

Young’s temperamental, jealous but nonetheless loyal and caring Paulie Pennino was Rocky’s best friend — he would defend the Italian Stallion if someone insulted him. But he was a problematic friend who shouts at Adrian during her pregnancy,...

The Wannabe – The Review
It’s rare that I find myself questioning the judgement of Martin Scorsese, but after having seen The Wannabe, which he co-executive produced with Dean Devlin, it’s inevitable, even if it is short-lived. Directed by Nick Sandow, the film tells the story of Tom & Rose, an ambitious couple, but not well endowed with common sense or street smarts. The film is based upon real-life events that occurred around the trial of mafia boss John Gotti, an unusual case of celebrity obsession, if you will.

The Wannabe, as silly as the title sounds, is just that. It’s the story of a social outcast who dreams of being a big-shot gangster and tried very hard in his own, pathetic way, to make those dreams a reality, when all it really accomplishes is chaos, death and destruction. On it’s own, this is a fairly generic, albeit not poorly made movie of average entertainment value.

Horror Round-Up: Hannibal S3 Casting Update, Release Details for Salem S2 & It Follows
Welcome to another horror news round-up! This time around we have an update on the growing cast of Hannibal Season 3 and details on when you can expect to see Salem Season 2 on the small screen and the buzzed-about It Follows on the big screen.

TVLine reports that Glenn Fleshler (True Detective) will play Cordell Doemling, yet another familiar name to fans of Thomas Harris’ books and the Hannibal Lecter movies. For those unfamiliar, Cordell Doemling is the verbally abused medical aid to the wealthy, wicked, and mutilated Mason Verger, who will now be played on the TV series by Joe Anderson in place of Michael Pitt. In the 2001 film, Hannibal, Doemling was played by Željko Ivanek.

In other, previously announced Hannibal Season 3 casting news, it was recently revealed that Rutina Wesley, whom True Blood fans know as Tara Mae Thornton, will play the recurring role of Reba McClane, a blind...

True Blood’s Rutina Wesley to Join Hannibal Season 3 Cast
With HBO’s True Blood coming to an end last summer, Rutina Wesley, longtime cast member of the Southern supernatural series, is lined up for another horror show. This time around, though, Wesley will encounter human monsters rather than creatures of the night, as she’s set to join the cast of Hannibal for the third season, playing a character from Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon and its two film adaptations.

TVLine reports that Rutina Wesley, whom True Blood fans know as Tara Mae Thornton, is set to co-star in Hannibal Season 3 in the recurring role of Reba McClane, a blind woman who becomes the romantic interest of Francis Dolarhyde, aka The Tooth Fairy serial killer, who in turn will be played by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit films). Reba McClane is a key character in Thomas Harris’ 1981 novel, Red Dragon, and was previously played by Joan Allen in...

Watch the First Hannibal Season 3 Teaser Trailer
“Our minds can concoct all sorts of scenarios when we don’t want to believe something. Arianda portrays a character named Molly—a strong single mother who is a romantic interest for one key character.

Kill the Messenger | Review
Crack is Whack: Cuesta Revisits Contras Affair as Political Thriller

Though he has several films under his belt, director Michael Cuesta has probably made more of an impression in television over the past decade, though that may change with the reception of his latest, Kill the Messenger, a smartly layered tale based on a media minefield from the mid 1990s. Presented as a mixture of journalistic woe and political conspiracy, a brightly scrubbed cast and a tightly wound pace manage to make the best use of its running time, even though the material could have afforded to take more time to justifiably mine the depths of its implications. But, based on two books, one of them by the deceased journalist at the center of the tale, Cuesta stays true to a specific point of view to concoct an unnerving exploration of a matter swept too conveniently under the rug.

I’ve Got The Blus – New Blu-ray and DVD Releases For Week Of June 24th 2014
Thought I’d forgotten about you, didn’t you? I am aware that I am two days late in posting this week’s noteworthy Blu-ray releases, but I have a good excuse. I was on a family trip, where we both played at a waterpark, went for a two our boat cruise, and made our way to the AMC IMAX theater in the area to see a movie I had been dying to see(The Rover) but didn’t have a chance to see it at home. In any event, if this is your first exposure to I’ve Got The Blus, this is something new I’m trying, to make sure that everything I’m sent to review, gets equal coverage. Really it’s about me getting organized, and keeping better track of the new releases, instead of letting them form a three-foot pile and becoming overwhelmed. Last week...

Contest: Check Out An Exclusive Clip From Rob The Mob, Plus Enter To Win Signed Posters And A Blu-Ray!
One of the better films from the first half of this year was definitely Raymond de Felitta’s crime caper Rob the Mob, which charted the rise and fall of Tommy and Rosemarie Uva (played excellently by Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda), a real Queens couple who brazenly stuck up New York clubs habited by big-time mobsters as part of an unlikely crime spree. In my four-star review, I wrote:

Thanks to stellar performances from Pitt and Arianda, Rob the Mob works as both a deceptively complex mafia epic and as a wildly entertaining, Bonnie and Clyde-esque romance.

Part crime drama, part relationship comedy, Rob the Mob was one of those movies that really shouldn’t have worked but did so spectacularly. And as it heads to Blu-Ray and DVD this week courtesy of Millenium Entertainment, We Got This Covered is thrilled to debut an exclusive deleted scene from the film.

'Enemy', '300: Rise of an Empire', 'Winter's Tale' & 'Hard Days Night' On DVD & Blu-ray This Week
Enemy What would make this a more interesting release would be an audio commentary, but there isn't one. As interesting as this film is and as likely as I am to watch it again, in this day and age, if you aren't going to give me any added incentive to buy a DVD/Blu-ray that I'm only likely to watch once or twice ever again... why would I buy itc

Blood Ties I did not enjoy this movie when I saw it in Cannes last year, but it has been edited down since, by about 15 minutes or so I believe, which could make it a more interesting watch as it was a film that either needed to be about 15 minutes shorter or two hours longer. You can read my original review right here, though do know the movie I reviewed is not the one on this disc.

Samira Wiley Promoted To Series Regular On 'Orange Is The New Black'
Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey Washington on Orange is the New Black, has been promoted to series regular for the Netflix series’ third season.

Samira Wiley Promoted To Regular

During Wiley’s run on Orange is the New Black, Poussey has appeared in nearly every episode. Like Danielle Brooks (Taystee) before her, she’s earned a promotion to series regular, reported Deadline. With both actresses on as regulars for season three, it wouldn’t be a surprise if their friendship received even more screen time going forward.

Prior to landing the role of Poussey on Orange, Wiley appeared in features The Sitter and Being Flynn. She also had guest-starring roles on Unforgettable and Person of Interest. Following her success on the Netflix prison comedy-drama, Wiley appeared in Rob the Mob as Agent Annie Bell.

Orange is the New Black premiered its entire second season on Netflix Friday, June 6. So far,...

Rob The Mob – The Review
There are many ways a person can commit suicide, quick and easy or long and slow, but the end result is all the same. One way, for example, would be to deliberately do something to royally piss off the mafia. Yes, that would just about guarantee your own demise. With this in mind, let’s talk about a film, based on a true story…

By its title, Rob The Mob does sound like it should be a comedy about the mafia. In fact, it is actually a very funny film. I’d even say it holds its own against My Cousin Vinny (1992). As appealing as that is on the surface, it gets better. Not only is this a funny, entertaining movie, but it’s also based on a true story. The events in this film, or at least parts of it, actually happened… in real life!

So, why am I...

Title: Rob The Mob Director: Raymond De Felitta Starring: Michael Pitt, Nina Arianda, Andy Garcia, Ray Romano. ‘Rob the Mob’ portrays the Bonnie & Clyde of the 90s, the contemporary Robin Hood couple who stole from the Mafia to give to the poor…with the love-dove-thieves alone being the poor in question. Rob The Mob Review
Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. That’s certainly the case in Rob the Mob, Raymond De Felitta’s jaunty, disarmingly human crime caper about Tommy and Rosemarie Uva, a real Queens couple who brazenly stuck up social clubs habited by members of two major New York crime families, and got away with it – until they didn’t.

When we first meet Tommy and Rosie, they’re embarking on an ill-advised robbery, one which will land Tommy in prison for 18 months. Immediately, the motivations behind their life of crime are clear; of course, the financial incentive is there, but there’s a heated romantic spark driving their activities forward as well. So crazy in love that they feel invincible, the two lovebirds instinctively feel that the world is theirs for the taking.

Once Tommy’s out, it’s not long before the two are scheming again, despite Rosie’s...

Andy Garcia and Raymond De Felitta on twisting the crime genre in 'Rob the Mob'
Andy Garcia, Ray Romano, Michael Pitt, and Nina Arianda in Rob the Mob (2014)
Miami - We've so often seen Andy Garcia performing in an Italian-American gangster guise – from “The Untouchables” to “Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead” to, of course, his Oscar-nominated breakout role in “The Godfather Part III” – that it's easy to forget the Havana-born actor's Cuban heritage. Or perhaps not so easy in Miami, Garcia's hometown from the age of five. Back in town for the Miami Film Festival premiere of his new film “Rob the Mob,” Garcia is greeted with a collective roar of affection by the local crowd packing out the city's spectacular Gusman Theater; earlier that day, when we meet for a chat in the Standard Hotel restaurant, he has the breezy assurance of a man who knows his way around. His old high school, he points out, is a short distance down the street, while a number of his films have played the festival...

Review: Gangster Comedy 'Rob The Mob' Starring Michael Pitt, Nina Arianda & Andy Garcia Is A Pure Joy
It feels like we haven't had a good mob movie in a long time. We're talking real Italian-style paisanos; tracksuits, wife-beaters, food metaphors, and grease everywhere. Raymond De Felitta may have been feeling the same kind of nostalgia in the air, because his new movie "Rob The Mob" plays out like a hundred dollar tip to the genre. Recent films that dealt with organized crime range from Academy Award nominees and winners ("American Hustle," "The Departed") to the wrongfully ignored ("Lawless," "Killing Them Softly") or ones that somehow went terribly off the rails ("Gangster Squad"); but none of those dealt with the mafia as we know it from the '90s classics like "Goodfellas," HBO's "The Sopranos" or "Donnie Brasco." Well, De Felitta takes a true story that occurred in the early '90s, adds two energized leads, a pinch of bearded Andy Garcia and a screenplay that goes down...

Andy Garcia, Ray Romano, Raymond De Felitta, Jonathan Fernandez, and Stephen Endelman Talk Rob The Mob, How the Project Came Together, and More
Opening March 21st, Rob the Mob is a heartbreaking crime-thriller inspired by the true story of Tommy (Michael Pitt) and Rosie (Nina Arianda) Uva, two small-time crooks from Queens whose crazy-passionate love for one another fueled their audacious heists of Mafia social clubs in the 1990s and led to a startling discovery. The film directed by Raymond De Felitta from a screenplay by Jonathan Fernandez boasts an impressive cast that also includes Andy Garcia (who also produces), Ray Romano, Griffin Dunne, Cathy Moriarty, Michael Rispoli, Val Vazquez, Frank Whaley and Burt Young. At the film’s recent press day, Garcia, De Felitta, Romano, Fernandez and composer Stephen Endelman spoke about how the project emerged, why Fernandez’s well written script and De Felitta’s directing style helped attract an incredible cast, how the actors approached their characters and brought the fascinating story to life, De Felitta’s unique collaboration with...

Exclusive Video Interview With Andy Garcia, Ray Romano And Raymond De Felitta On Rob The Mob
On the surface, Rob The Mob looks like just another True Romance clone, with its star crossed lovers dodging bullets and getting into trouble. The only difference here is that this film is based on a true story. And not just any true story, a rather unbelievable one.

Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda play Tom and Rosie, a couple of ex-cons from Queens, New York who just got out of jail after serving time for robbing a flower shop on Valentine’s Day. They are both determined to go straight and to do so, end up working at a debt collection agency. It doesn’t take long for Tom to find himself bored sitting in a cubicle and talking on the phone all day and he soon skips work to find other forms of entertainment. He ends up finding this by slipping into the trial of John Gotti, the American...

Dog Eat Dog: De Felitta’s Entertaining Take of a Take

After the success of his 2009 indie feature, City Island, Raymond De Felitta turns to a scrappy ‘based on a true story’ vehicle with Rob the Mob, a film that manages to override predispositions and assume an energetic momentum that is both rewarding and engaging. An interestingly varied cast, populated by a several faces instantly recognizable from either “The Sopranos” or various Martin Scorsese films, provides the film with immediate likeability, an entertaining mix of mafia history and character study.

In 1991, while the Gotti trial holds everyone’s rapt attention, Tommy (Michael Pitt) is paroled after getting busted for holding up a floral shop with girlfriend Rosie (Nina Arianda). While Rosie has kicked drugs and a life of crime to clean up her act, she now works as a star performer at a collection agency run by Dave Lovell (Griffin Dunne...

Watch: Michael Pitt Will 'Rob The Mob' In Trailer For Heist Dramedy With Ray Romano, Andy Garcia & More
Michael Pitt, sitcom star Ray Romano, Andy Garcia, Broadway sensation Nina Arianda....wait, what? Yeah, the cast for "Rob The Mob" is a bit all over the place, and even the title is a bit too cutesy but you have to admit, the trailer for this looks far more interesting, particularly as it keeps going, more than you would have previously thought possible. Set in 1992, but weirdly boasting costume and set designs that seem more 1970s, the is a based on a true story tale of a young Queens couple who robbed a series of mafia social clubs and got away with it before being targeted by both the mob and the FBI. Admittedly, director Raymond De Felitta ("City Island") isn't putting too high a bar on the proceedings, aiming for a loose, breezy vibe, so it works on that pretty modest level we suppose. And while Garcia has played...

Michael Pitt & Nina Arianda Try to 'Rob the Mob' in Wild True Story
When a couple in love from Queens was down on their luck, they decided to pick themselves up by pointing a gun at the mafia. Michael Pitt ("Boardwalk Empire") and Nina Arianda (Win Win, Tower Heist) play a couple who hold up some mafia social clubs until they get in way over their head by picking up a mob family tree list that catches the interest of the FBI. Some familiar mobster faces like Andy Garcia and Michael Rispoli pop up, and Ray Romano is also here, maybe trying to shake his TV sitcom image for better or worse. It's at least an original story, and the trailer makes it look promising, but we're not sure if it'll work. Here's the trailer for Raymond De Felitta's Rob the Mob, originally from Apple: Rob the Mob is directed by Raymond De Felitta (City Island) and written by unknown writer Jonathan Fernandez...

2014 Sundance Film Festival Predictions List: An Intro
Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.
