What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Netflix continues its domination during the week’s streaming wars, and there’s good reason why. With its recent offerings, the platform is serving up a variety of options that cater to viewers of different age groups. On the animated movies side, Netflix goes big with Despicable Me 4 and The Secret Life of Pets - some huge favorites amongst young children. Meanwhile, thrillers Don’t Move and Time Cut reign supreme, proving that it’s never too late for some post-Halloween scares.

Last month, the directing duo of Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, who worked with the legendary Sam Raimi on episodes of the Raimi-produced anthology series 50 States of Fright and on the thriller Don’t Move, said that they would like to revive Darkman, the superhero action franchise that Raimi started with his 1990 film of the same name. I said at the time that if Schindler and Netto want to make a Darkman movie, they might have to duel Scare Me and Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben over the project, as Ruben is such a Darkman superfan that he even recorded a fan commentary for a Scream Factory 4K and Blu-ray release… and now, Ruben has taken to social media to share his pitch for a Darkman legacy sequel.

They want to bring Darkman back to life, a character introduced by Sam Raimi in his franchise-starting movie back in 1990.

Liam Neeson played the title character in Raimi and Universal’s Darkman, which essentially mashed together the superhero movie and the classic Universal Monsters movie. Neeson’s Peyton Westlake was a brilliant scientist left for dead in a violent attack, ultimately becoming a dark superhero who returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive.

Darkman was followed by two sequels, Darkman II: The Return of Durant in 1995 and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die in 1996, but the franchise hasn’t been heard from in the past 30+ years.

The season finale of Agatha All Along helped push the Marvel series to its best showing in the Nielsen streaming rankings.

The Kathryn Hahn-led show tallied 744 million minutes of viewing on Disney+ for the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3; the final two episodes of the season debuted on Oct. 30. That’s by far the biggest total weekly total for Agatha All Along, beating the 426 million minutes for its premiere week by a 75 percent margin.

Only Murders in the Building also had a strong showing, hitting a season high of 599 million minutes of viewing on Hulu for the week of its season four finale. The 599 million minutes is the show’s second-best week to date, behind only the season three premiere in August 2023.

Viewing of Lost on Hulu and Netflix hit a high that week, finishing first among all acquired series with 1.03 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States, according to Nielsen. The former ABC series, which marked the 20th anniversary of its premiere in September, ranked second among all titles.

In first place was The Lincoln Lawyer, which spent a second week in the top overall spot and got over the 2 billion-minute mark (2.03 billion) for the first time in its three seasons. The drama based on Michael Connelly’s novels improved by about 24 percent week to week.

Tyler Perry’s Netflix series Beauty in Black was the top newcomer, scoring 740 million minutes of watch time for its opening week (it premiered Oct. 24). That was good for third place among original series behind The Lincoln Lawyer...

Aubrey Plaza's new dramedy with a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score tops a movies streaming chart. Starting her career in improv and sketch comedy, Plaza rose to prominence on Parks and Recreation as the sarcastic and deadpan April Ludgate, establishing her distinct comedic style. On television, Plaza has also showcased her range as a strait-laced lawyer in The White Lotus season 2, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and starred in the Marvel miniseries Agatha All Along.

The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with the duo and asked if they have any dream projects. They'd start by revealing that Darkman - an original superhero created by Raimi in his 1990 cult classic - is somewhere near the top of their list. However, so is Miles Morales!

"If we’re talking Sam-related, it’s Darkman," Schindler started. "We talked about Darkman [with him]. We’ve got a love and an affinity for Darkman."

Netto added, "Darkman was my favorite film for a good portion of my life. It was the movie, so Darkman would be really interesting.

With Halloween in the rearview mirror, audiences are getting into the holiday spirit, as evidenced by Netflix’s Meet Me Next Christmas jingled all the way to 18.1M views in its debut week on the streamer, making it the most-watched title from November 4 to 10.

But that doesn’t mean horror is entirely off the menu, as the Y2K thriller Time Cut still managed to come in second place with 14.9M views. Don’t Move was still going strong too, making it to third place with 9.1M views.

On the TV side of things, Outer Banks reclaimed the top spot with the release of Season 4B, raking in 8.6M views. Season 2, Act I of Arcane took second place with 6.3M views.

It’s exceedingly rare for a directing duo to come out of the Gopher State. But in the case of Don’t Move’s Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, they had the ultimate example to follow.

As 9-year-old classmates in Woodbury, Minnesota, Schindler and Netto started making backyard movies in their suburban neighborhood just like the Coen brothers had done decades earlier in their nearby Saint Louis Park suburb. As Schindler and Netto focused more and more on their pursuit, they eventually took a page out of the Coens’ co-directing playbook by crediting one person as sole director and the other as a producer. The tale they had heard was that Coens adopted the approach in order to create a more favorable impression among financiers. (After 20 years, the Coens finally shared directing credit as of 2004’s The Ladykillers.)

A Zachary Levi movie that flopped at the box office has now become a global hit on Netflix. Overall, 2024 has been up and down in terms of box office performance. The year kicked off with the February release that would become one of the biggest blockbuster flops of the year: Argylle. Argylle was not only panned by critics, but it lost millions of dollars as it grossed $96.2 million on an estimated $200 million budget. This was not a great start to the year, leaving a lukewarm box office in an early 2024 weekend.

Since then, the box office has picked up quite a bit in 2024. Family movies have been a big part of this year's box office wins, with the critically-acclaimed Inside Out 2 taking the no. 1 spot at the box office overall. Other family-friend hits in the global box office top 10 this year include Despicable Me 4, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

After falling off the chart for two weeks, “Outer Banks” Season 4 is once again the top title on Luminate’s weekly streaming rankings. Thanks to the release of its second batch of episodes on Nov. 7, the Netflix teen drama was watched for 1.4 billion minutes watched during the Nov. 8-14 viewing window.

“Outer Banks” nearly doubled the viewership of the next-most-watched title, which was “Tulsa King” Season 2 with 810.5 million minutes watched. It was a strong week for Taylor Sheridan-created series; besides “Tulsa King,” both season of “Lioness” also made the chart. Interestingly, more viewers tuned into Season 1, which was released last year, than Season 2, which dropped its fourth episode during this window. Season 1 landed at No. 6 with 357.8 million minutes watched while Season 2 took eighth place with 289.4 million minutes watched.

Bryan Cranston's little-known 2016 crime thriller The Infiltrator, with a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating of 72%, has entered the Netflix charts. Cranston rose to public prominence in the role of Walter White in AMC's crime drama Breaking Bad from 2008-2013. The Infiltrator, which Cranston also executive-produced, follows a U.S. Customs special agent who goes undercover in the 1980s to try to bust Pablo Escobar's money-laundering organization. Despite positive reviews, the movie was a box office flop, grossing just $22 million against a budget of $47 million, but has found fresh popularity on streaming.

Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Oddity’s portrayal of revenge was haunting. And Outside’s use of the zombie subgenre to talk about the patriarchy was worthy of all the applause in the world. Then you have movies like Night Swim, The Devil’s Bath, Consumed, Baghead, The Hangman, Munjya, MadS, Mr. Crocket, and Don’t Move, which undoubtedly have a good concept at their core, but the execution is simply too muddled to be impactful. For seven consecutive weeks, Max/HBO’s “The Penguin” has ruled the streaming chart, much in the way its titular character hopes to reign over the crime underworld of Gotham City. No one and nothing, ranging from diplomats to lawyers, from Halloween horrors to Martha Stewart, could unseat the show this week on Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report.

With one more episode to go, it’s highly likely “The Penguin” will make it a clean eight-week sweep atop the chart – and possibly extend its tenure beyond new episodes, as we saw with “House of the Dragon” over the summer.

Although Harold and the Purple Crayon had a less than favorable run at the box office, it found success on Netflix, reaching no. 8 in the U.S. for the week between Oct. 28 and Nov. 3. The fantasy comedy starring Levi adapted Crockett Johnson's 1995 children's book of the same name, and it combined live-action and animation. Even the deal with Netflix was problematic, but the children's film drew enough interest to make it into the top 10.

Netflix’s latest sci-fi horror hit, Time Cut, tells the story of Lucy (played by Outer Banks star Madison Bailey), a high school student and hobby inventor who accidentally travels back to 2003. She tries to save her older sister Summer (played by Ginny & Georgia‘s Antonia Gentry) from being killed by a masked serial killer.

According to Netflix, the movie racked up over 22 million views last week after its October 30 release. It’s now in the streamer’s top 10 list, beating out the new Sam Raimi-produced horror film Don’t Move and the Marvel sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

On Rotten Tomatoes, though, the movie isn’t doing as well, with a critics’ score of just 26%. Decider’s review says “Time Cut consists of piles of period-specific references sans humor, heavy drama without depth, and characters without much going on in their interior lives.”

Tyler Perry’s “Beauty in Black” series is gaining more traction as it rose to become Netflix’s most-watched TV series of the week.

After the series debuted as the No. 4 most-watched Netflix TV show with 5.6 million views from its Oct. 24 premiere through Oct. 27, “Beauty in Black” got a significant viewership boost in its second week, logging 8.7 million views during the week of Oct. 28.

Viewership for “Beauty in Black” outpaced “Territory,” which took the No. 2 spot on the TV list with 6.3 million views, as well as the Season 2 debut of “The Diplomat,” which scored 5.6 million views in the four-day interval between its Oct. 31 premiere and Nov. 3. Likewise, “This Is the Zodiac Speaking” took the No. 4 spot on the list with 5.5 million views this week while “The Lincoln Lawyer” Season...

After debuting as Netflix’s fourth-most-watched series in its first four days of availability, Tyler Perry’s “Beauty in Black” has risen to the top of the streamer’s TV chart for Oct. 28 to Nov. 3, hitting 8.7 million views in its first full week of streaming.

That’s a 55% increase from the 5.6 million views it achieved on last week’s Netflix Top 10, when it came behind “The Lincoln Lawyer” Season 3, “This Is the Zodiac Speaking” and “Territory.” During the Oct. 28-Nov. 3 viewing window, those titles fell further down the chart: “Territory” took second place, “This Is the Zodiac Speaking” took fourth, both in their first full weeks of availability, and “The Lincoln Lawyer” landed in fifth place in its second full week.

The No. 3 title was “The Diplomat,” which returned with its second season and hit 5.6 million views in its first four days of streaming.

This marked the film’s first full week on Netflix, and it saw a promising boost over last week, when it made its debut on the English films list at No. 1 with 20.2M views.

This week, Y2K slasher thriller Time Cut jumped Woman of the Hour for second place with 22.9M views. Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut hung on at No. 3 with another 5.7M views this week.

TV was a little slow by comparison, with 8.7M views for the top English series, Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black. Season 2 of The Diplomat came in at No. 3 with 5.6M views. Meanwhile, Season 3 of The Lincoln Lawyer fell from first to fifth place this week with 5M views.

The Sam Raimi-produced horror flick Don’t Move has proven to be a surprisingly big hit for Netflix. It topped their Top 10 service last week, beating higher profile original films, and the word-of-mouth on this twisted thriller has been through the roof. In it, Yellowstone’s Kelsey Asbille plays Iris, a grieving young mother who is suicidal after the death of her son. Her grief puts her in the crosshairs of Finn Wittrock’s Richard, a serial killer who injects her with a paralyzing agent. She manages to escape and has to play cat and mouse with the killer while barely mobile.

Warner Bros.’ woes with “Joker: Folie à Deux” continue with a weak debut on PVOD. The disastrous around $300 million investment for them left theaters after four weeks with under $60 million in domestic gross. Now, it is falling flat in initial PVOD response.

It placed fourth on both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (revenue-counting) after its release last Tuesday. “The Substance” (Mubi), released on Thursday (and also streaming at their site for subscribers), is third at iTunes, sixth at Fandango, debuts at #1.
