For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.
What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Horror fans, prepare yourselves—”Don’t Move” (2024) is now streaming on Netflix, and it’s one of the most intense survival horror films I’ve seen in a while. If you love edge-of-your-seat tension, terrifying villains, and the kind of horror that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll, this is a must-watch.
What Is “Don’t Move” (2024) About?
Directed by Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, Don’t Move stars Kelsey Asbille (Yellowstone), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story), and David Spade in a chilling departure from his usual comedic roles.
The premise is terrifyingly simple yet utterly gripping:
A ruthless serial killer injects a grieving woman with a paralytic agent. She has only minutes before her body completely shuts down. Her only chance at survival? Running, hiding, and fighting back—before she can’t move at all.
It’s a nightmare scenario that plays out in real time, making every second feel like an eternity.

The end of Yellowstone is in sight, and it's also the end of a journey for Kayce Dutton, his wife Monica Long Dutton, and their son Tate. The last episodes of Season 5 have included Kayce contemplating the future -- knowing that he'd have to choose between his family and the ranch. For him, it wasn't much of a choice, and now viewers are left to see where he, Monica and Tate will end up in the series finale.
Cbr spoke to actors Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille about the journey that Kayce and Monica take in Yellowstone Season 5. They spoke about Kayce's outlook after everything he's been through, being somewhat removed from the main Dutton family drama, and whether or not they left anything unexplored. Netflix continues its domination during the week’s streaming wars, and there’s good reason why. With its recent offerings, the platform is serving up a variety of options that cater to viewers of different age groups. On the animated movies side, Netflix goes big with Despicable Me 4 and The Secret Life of Pets - some huge favorites amongst young children. Meanwhile, thrillers Don’t Move and Time Cut reign supreme, proving that it’s never too late for some post-Halloween scares.

Last month, the directing duo of Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, who worked with the legendary Sam Raimi on episodes of the Raimi-produced anthology series 50 States of Fright and on the thriller Don’t Move, said that they would like to revive Darkman, the superhero action franchise that Raimi started with his 1990 film of the same name. I said at the time that if Schindler and Netto want to make a Darkman movie, they might have to duel Scare Me and Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben over the project, as Ruben is such a Darkman superfan that he even recorded a fan commentary for a Scream Factory 4K and Blu-ray release… and now, Ruben has taken to social media to share his pitch for a Darkman legacy sequel.
Scripted by Sam Raimi with Chuck Pfarrer, Ivan Raimi, Daniel Goldin, and Joshua Goldin, the original Darkman has the following synopsis: When the laboratory of Dr.

Fresh off their Netflix thriller Don’t Move, which was produced by Sam Raimi in the wake of Raimi working with the filmmakers on the Quibi series “50 States of Fright,” directors Brian Netto and Adam Schindler have a dream project in mind. They want to bring Darkman back to life, a character introduced by Sam Raimi in his franchise-starting movie back in 1990.
Liam Neeson played the title character in Raimi and Universal’s Darkman, which essentially mashed together the superhero movie and the classic Universal Monsters movie. Neeson’s Peyton Westlake was a brilliant scientist left for dead in a violent attack, ultimately becoming a dark superhero who returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive.
Darkman was followed by two sequels, Darkman II: The Return of Durant in 1995 and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die in 1996, but the franchise hasn’t been heard from in the past 30+ years.

Netflix's new Christmas movie with an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score becomes the streaming service's No. 1 movie as the holiday season begins. Netflix has been producing original Christmas movies since 2017, starting with A Christmas Prince. Since then, the streaming service has solidified its reputation as a go-to platform for holiday films with titles like The Princess Switch starring Vanessa Hudgens, The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell, and Klaus, an Oscar-nominated animated movie, exemplifying the diversity of Netflix's Christmas movie catalog.
In 2024, Netflix already had the holiday romantic comedy, Meet Me Next Christmas, top its Global Top 10 chart for the week of November 410 with over 18 million views. The holiday season is just beginning, so there should be plenty more Christmas movies appearing on Netflix's global chart before the year's end. This includes Netflix's new romantic comedy Christmas movie starring Lacey Chabert, a frequent star of Hallmark's Christmas movies, which has become the streaming service's new No.

Margot Robbie and Will Smith's crime movie, which made over $158 million at the box office, becomes a global Netflix hit nine years later. Two of the biggest stars of their time, Smith rose to fame playing a fictionalized version of himself in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and transitioned to blockbuster movies during the 1990s, starring in Bad Boys, Men in Black, Independence Day, and more. He started garnering critical acclaim during the 2000s, earning Oscar nominations for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, though he didn't win the award until King Richard in 2022.
Similarly, Robbie started her career on television with Neighbours and Pan Am, but broke through with a standout role in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and collaborated with more acclaimed directors on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Outside of franchise fare, Pine first rose to prominence for his roles in romantic comedies, including The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004 and Just My Luck in 2006. A 24-year-old Ridley Scott movie has become a modern streaming hit. At the age of 86, Scott continues to work regularly in Hollywood as a director and producer. He is responsible for some truly iconic films over the course of his 60-year career spanning a variety of genres. He's worked extensively in science-fiction with Blade Runner and multiple installments in the Alien franchise, but he has also returned time and time again to the historical epic, which he is set to return to once more with the upcoming Gladiator II.

The directing duo of Adam Schindler and Brian Netto have worked with the legendary Sam Raimi on episodes of the Raimi-produced anthology series 50 States of Fright and on the thriller Don’t Move, which recently received a successful release through the Netflix streaming service – and while talking to The Hollywood Reporter, they revealed that there are a couple of projects where they’d like to follow in Raimi’s footsteps. For one thing, they would like to revive Darkman, the superhero action franchise that Raimi started with his 1990 film of the same name. Many Netflix movies come and go without leaving much of a lasting impression; however, intense new thriller/horror Don't Move has proven itself a rare exception and a must-watch.
Executive produced by Evil Dead and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi, Adam Schindler & Brian Netto direct the movie after previously working with the filmmaker on Quibi's 50 States of Fright.
The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with the duo and asked if they have any dream projects. They'd start by revealing that Darkman - an original superhero created by Raimi in his 1990 cult classic - is somewhere near the top of their list. However, so is Miles Morales!
"If we’re talking Sam-related, it’s Darkman," Schindler started. "We talked about Darkman [with him]. We’ve got a love and an affinity for Darkman."
Netto added, "Darkman was my favorite film for a good portion of my life. It was the movie, so Darkman would be really interesting.

With Halloween in the rearview mirror, audiences are getting into the holiday spirit, as evidenced by Netflix’s Meet Me Next Christmas jingled all the way to 18.1M views in its debut week on the streamer, making it the most-watched title from November 4 to 10.
But that doesn’t mean horror is entirely off the menu, as the Y2K thriller Time Cut still managed to come in second place with 14.9M views. Don’t Move was still going strong too, making it to third place with 9.1M views.
On the TV side of things, Outer Banks reclaimed the top spot with the release of Season 4B, raking in 8.6M views. Season 2, Act I of Arcane took second place with 6.3M views.
Third place once again went to Season 2 of The Diplomat, which amassed 5.9M views in its second week. The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 is still driving a solid audience as well,...

It’s exceedingly rare for a directing duo to come out of the Gopher State. But in the case of Don’t Move’s Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, they had the ultimate example to follow.
As 9-year-old classmates in Woodbury, Minnesota, Schindler and Netto started making backyard movies in their suburban neighborhood just like the Coen brothers had done decades earlier in their nearby Saint Louis Park suburb. As Schindler and Netto focused more and more on their pursuit, they eventually took a page out of the Coens’ co-directing playbook by crediting one person as sole director and the other as a producer. The tale they had heard was that Coens adopted the approach in order to create a more favorable impression among financiers. (After 20 years, the Coens finally shared directing credit as of 2004’s The Ladykillers.)

A James Cameron-produced $405 million action movie has landed on Netflix's global chart five years later. Cameron is one of the most commercially successful filmmakers of all time, having written and directed Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic three of the top five highest-grossing films of all time. Collectively, James Cameron's movies have made over $8 billion worldwide, making him the second-highest-grossing director of all time behind Steven Spielberg, though Cameron has only directed 13 movies to Spielberg's 34.
Cameron occasionally produces and pens projects that he doesn't direct. A Zachary Levi movie that flopped at the box office has now become a global hit on Netflix. Overall, 2024 has been up and down in terms of box office performance. The year kicked off with the February release that would become one of the biggest blockbuster flops of the year: Argylle. Argylle was not only panned by critics, but it lost millions of dollars as it grossed $96.2 million on an estimated $200 million budget. This was not a great start to the year, leaving a lukewarm box office in an early 2024 weekend.
Since then, the box office has picked up quite a bit in 2024. Family movies have been a big part of this year's box office wins, with the critically-acclaimed Inside Out 2 taking the no. 1 spot at the box office overall. Other family-friend hits in the global box office top 10 this year include Despicable Me 4, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Thanks to the release of its second batch of episodes on Nov. 7, the Netflix teen drama was watched for 1.4 billion minutes watched during the Nov. 8-14 viewing window.
“Outer Banks” nearly doubled the viewership of the next-most-watched title, which was “Tulsa King” Season 2 with 810.5 million minutes watched. It was a strong week for Taylor Sheridan-created series; besides “Tulsa King,” both season of “Lioness” also made the chart. Interestingly, more viewers tuned into Season 1, which was released last year, than Season 2, which dropped its fourth episode during this window. Prime Video's new apocalyptic zombie movie has become a streaming success. Amazon's streaming service has been consistently producing original movies since 2019, although they take on a variety of genres, they started making horror movies about a year in, including Black Box, The Lie, Nocturne, and Evil Eye. Since then, that roster has expanded significantly to include more movies, such as Bingo Hell, Black as Night, Madres, The Manor, Master, Goodnight Mommy, Nanny, and perhaps Prime Video's most popular horror movie, Totally Killer.
On the series side, one of Prime Video's most popular efforts is the post-apocalyptic drama Fallout, based on the Bethesda video game series of the same name, which has been renewed for a second season. Though some of its content could be categorized as post-apocalyptic, Prime Video has never directly dabbled in the zombie before. Oops, all Netflix! Nobody would dispute that the mega-streaming platform easily leads the pack in terms of total subscribers, brand awareness, and catchy slogans. Bryan Cranston's little-known 2016 crime thriller The Infiltrator, with a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating of 72%, has entered the Netflix charts. Cranston rose to public prominence in the role of Walter White in AMC's crime drama Breaking Bad from 2008-2013. The Infiltrator, which Cranston also executive-produced, follows a U.S. Customs special agent who goes undercover in the 1980s to try to bust Pablo Escobar's money-laundering organization. Despite positive reviews, the movie was a box office flop, grossing just $22 million against a budget of $47 million, but has found fresh popularity on streaming.

Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Oddity’s portrayal of revenge was haunting. And Outside’s use of the zombie subgenre to talk about the patriarchy was worthy of all the applause in the world. Then you have movies like Night Swim, The Devil’s Bath, Consumed, Baghead, The Hangman, Munjya, MadS, Mr. Crocket, and Don’t Move, which undoubtedly have a good concept at their core, but the execution is simply too muddled to be impactful. I am sad to say that...

For seven consecutive weeks, Max/HBO’s “The Penguin” has ruled the streaming chart, much in the way its titular character hopes to reign over the crime underworld of Gotham City. No one and nothing, ranging from diplomats to lawyers, from Halloween horrors to Martha Stewart, could unseat the show this week on Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report.
With one more episode to go, it’s highly likely “The Penguin” will make it a clean eight-week sweep atop the chart – and possibly extend its tenure beyond new episodes, as we saw with “House of the Dragon” over the summer.
Let’s look at the challengers who may hope to hold the crown once “The Penguin’s” season ends.
In second this week is “Don’t Move,” the Netflix horror film that likely got a Halloween-time bump in ratings. At No. 3 is another gangster story, albeit one a bit lighter in tone,...

The genre of horror films has been around for a very long time. Despite shocking and frightening audiences, this genre is very popular, and some filmmakers have made a living by creating horror films, especially after Alfred Hitchcock took the genre to new heights.
Wes Craven, John Carpenter, and George Romero are regarded as classics, but there are also a number of up-and-coming filmmakers who want to make a career in the genre.
One of them is Drew Hancock, whose upcoming sci-fi horror Companion is set to be released early next year, although we’ve just received news that the movie is being pushed back, although not by much.
As Bloody Disgusting reports, Companion has been pushed back from its initial January 10 release date, but it is still going to air in the same month, so everyone who’s expecting to see this movie won’t have to wait much...

The Sam Raimi-produced horror flick Don’t Move has proven to be a surprisingly big hit for Netflix. It topped their Top 10 service last week, beating higher profile original films, and the word-of-mouth on this twisted thriller has been through the roof. Her grief puts her in the crosshairs of Finn Wittrock’s Richard, a serial killer who injects her with a paralyzing agent. She manages to escape and has to play cat and mouse with the killer while barely mobile.

After starring in recurring roles in sensational teen dramas like One Tree Hill and Teen Wolf, Kelsey Asbille changed tracks and took on more serious roles in Wind River and Yellowstone. It was not just the type of projects that the actress changed, she also changed her name from Kelsey Chow to Kelsey Asbille. She took on Native American roles in both the Taylor Sheridan projects, even claiming to be of Eastern Band Cherokee descent.

However, she ran into controversy when the band issued a statement sharing that she was not enrolled as a member nor did they have any documents supporting her claims. Asbille’s character’s ethnicity is a crucial part of the Yellowstone plotline, turning the Native Americans against the show.

‘The Substance’ Does Equal to ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ on PVOD, but ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Is Bigger
Warner Bros.’ woes with “Joker: Folie à Deux” continue with a weak debut on PVOD. The disastrous around $300 million investment for them left theaters after four weeks with under $60 million in domestic gross. Now, it is falling flat in initial PVOD response.
It placed fourth on both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (revenue-counting) after its release last Tuesday. “The Substance” (Mubi), released on Thursday (and also streaming at their site for subscribers), is third at iTunes, sixth at Fandango, debuts at #1.
‘Martha’Netflix
Their “Don’t Move,” another female-centered genre original which led last week is second. “Martha,” their documentary on multimedia lifestyle celebrity Martha Stewart, directed by R.J. Cutler (“The September Issue”) is third. Anna Kendrick’s “Woman of the Hour,” #1 before that, is #6.
A curious addition, not an original but little seen is at #7. “Fall into Winter,” Lori Loughlin’s first film since her release from prison...

Horror continues to be a major audience draw as a genre, and this year has delivered horror successes like Longlegs, Smile 2, and the critically-acclaimed The Substance. The genre continues to be attractive to filmmakers as horror flicks often feature smaller budgets, but this doesn't deter audiences. Every year, there are a few standout horror hits, and 2022 is certainly no different.
2022 saw the release of the Scream legacy sequel, which revitalized the franchise, and Halloween Ends, which ended that franchise's reboot trilogy. A number of standout original horror movies were also released, including Barbarian, which shocked audiences with its surprising twists and turns, and Smile, which reaped the benefits of a stellar marketing campaign to become a major box office success. Other notable titles include Jordan Peele's Nope, Bodies Bodies Bodies, The Menu, and Men, but the year also delivered two installments of what would become a horror trilogy.

Kate Beckinsale's 2024 spy movie is a streaming success despite its 30% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. The English actress made her feature film debut in 1993 with a brief role in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing and, during the remainder of the 1990s, continued to star in British costume dramas such as Prince of Jutland, Cold Comfort Farm, Emma, and The Golden Bowl. During the early 2000s, Beckinsale starred in films from a variety of genres, including Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor, the romantic comedy Serendipity, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, and Click.
However, since taking on the role of Selene in the Underworld franchise from 2003 to 2016, Kate Beckinsale has become best known for action movies, also including Van Helsing, Whiteout, Contraband, Total Recall, and Jolt. She's also received some critical acclaim for her performances in smaller dramas such as Snow Angels, Nothing but the Truth, Everybody's Fine, Love & Friendship,...

Warning: The following contains some spoilers for Don't MoveNetflix's new horror movie Don't Move is now available to watch on the streaming platform, and here is more insight into the real locations that served as the movie's setting. Don't Move is a tense horror film, directed by Adam Schindler and Brian Netto and produced by iconic horror director Sam Raimi. The movie follows its main character, Iris, as she attempts to escape from a serial killer after being injected with a paralytic drug.
Audiences are first introduced to Iris and Richard at the top of a mountainous hiking trail and their first chase scene occurs in the surrounding forest. One of the primary factors that creates tension in Don't Move is the movie's vast outdoor setting. Even once the characters move into cars or buildings, these features fit seamlessly into the natural surroundings and bring the characters' journeys to life.

While Sam Raimi is revered as one of the all-time great horror directors, Netflix's 2024 release Don't Move highlights a disappointing ongoing trend in his career. The movie, directed by Brian Netto and Adam Schindler, has Raimi as a high-profile producer, highlighting his ongoing investment and interest in the horror genre. However, despite having helmed genre classics like The Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell, there is a disappointing truth to Sam Raimi's movie career that Don't Move exemplifies.
For all his success in horror, Raimi hasnt actually directed that many horror movies. After Evil Dead's third installment, the director gradually shifted to new territories. Notably, he directed the 2000s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, considered today one of the best superhero film adaptations. Around the same time, Raimi transitioned to the role of producer one that would become his main interest for decades to come. Don't Move...
