I am so proud of this movie, I couldn't avoid smiling all through while seeing the scriptwriter clearly depict life in Nairobi (spoiler - if you're not familiar with Nairobian culture, you might not like it so much simply because you won't resonate). While watching, I could see stuff and tell myself, 'Yeah, I have experienced that...'; the police officers, the fear of loving, the heartbreak sex...
All I can say is that, we finally have a movie that is originally ours, even though it incorporates Nigerians, it still doesn't fail to bring out the Kenyan oomph. Oh, and I loved seeing Kenyan brands on screen too, felt great seeing that local brands are recognizing and teaming up with local talent to produce gold
I want more from you guys!!!
Needless to say that I had actually never heard about this 2022 Kenyan romantic comedy "Disconnect: The Wedding Planner" when I sat down to watch it here in 2023. Regardless of having heard about it or not, I believe in giving a a movie a fair chance, and thus I opted to sit down and watch this movie from director David 'Tosh' Gitonga.
The storyline in "Disconnect: The Wedding Planner", as written by Brian Ghettuba, fell very short of capturing my particular like and interest, and it was quite a struggle to sit through the narrative, as there was literally nothing interesting being offered from writer Brian Ghettuba, which left director David 'Tosh' Gitonga with nothing to bring to the screen.
Not only was the script and storyline in the movie dull and rather boring, but the character gallery was also a swing and a miss. And a combination of no solid script and one-dimensional characters hardly made for a good viewing experience.
I wasn't at all familiar with the cast ensemble in "Disconnect: The Wedding Planner", but it seemed that the actors and actresses on the screen had some talent, but they just weren't given anything worthwhile to work with in terms of script, characters or dialogue.
"Disconnect: The Wedding Planner" is a romantic comedy, well I found the movie to be lacking tremendously in both departments. So you're not in for a particularly outstanding, memorable or enjoyable 106 minutes, should you opt to sit down and watch this movie.
My rating of "Disconnect: The Wedding Planner" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.

This film essentially begins 4 years after its predecessor left off with "Celine" (Brenda Wairimu) still in a romantic relationship with "Richard" (Brian Ogola) who she became attracted to when her best friend "Josh" (Nick Mutuma) chose to have a relationship with a business client named "Belinda" (Illya Frank) instead of her. And although both Celine and Richard clearly love one another, there appears to be a great deal of friction between them and for that reason they are currently attending couples therapy to try to work things out. It's during this time that a friend of theirs named "Otis" (Pascal Tokodi) comes up with the idea of hosting a wedding ceremony at an exotic location and, needing their help in setting it up, invites them to come along. On that same note, he also invites a couple of other people named "Dele" (Tope Tedela), "T. K." (Catherine Kamau) and "Judy" (Patricia Kihoro) as well. The problem is that each of them have their own personal issues they are contending with which are further exacerbated by Otis' poor overall management skills. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that, although this film is billed as a comedy, there really wasn't that much humor to be found anywhere that I could see. Likewise, some of the scenes seemed disjointed and didn't flow smoothly in transition from one to the next either. That being said, while I don't consider this to be a bad movie by any means, it wasn't nearly as entertaining as it could have been and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly below average.
