Rico Nasty Keeps Raging — and Growing
Image
Since her early days as a Maryland teenager uploading aggressive, trap-influenced music on Soundcloud, rapper Rico Nasty has carved out her own unique place as a colorful rager. Yet, when she spoke to Rolling Stone this past February to announce her third studio album, Lethal, the 27-year-old phenom revealed that she was branching out past the wild persona that hip-hop fans have come to know during her rise.

“I was walking past the mirror, and I had on my fuzzy leg warmers, my big platforms, and I looked like a 17-year-old raver.

Frank Grillo’s R-Rated Crime Thriller With a ‘Hunger Games’ Star Quietly Become a Major Streaming Hit
Image
One of Frank Grillo’s more recent projects that perhaps didn’t get the theatrical release it deserved has found success on a new streamer. Grillo stars opposite Andy Garcia and Josh Hutcherson in Long Gone Heroes, the crime thriller following a special forces soldier who has given up everything but now must return to the field to track down his niece. The film recently began streaming on Paramount+ and has wasted no time becoming a major streaming hit, sitting at #2 at the time of writing, behind only Gladiator 2. Long Gone Heroes did not report any box office earnings, nor has it earned enough scores on Rotten Tomatoes to be rendered a review, but it's still wowing audiences on Paramount+ as one of the streamer’s most popular movies.

John Swab wrote and directed Long Gone Heroes with a story from Santiago Manes Moreno. Swab first made his feature...

Russell Crowes Critically Panned Horror Feature Is Possessing Streamers Around the Globe
Image
Theres just something about a horror feature thats based on a true story that will almost immediately pique the attention of audiences. Such was certainly the case for Julius Averys (Son of a Gun) return to filmmaking with 2023s The Popes Exorcist. The story of one mans faith against the power of the devil, the film was based on two books from the man who fought the fight and lived to tell the tale, Father Gabriele Amorth - also known as The Popes Exorcist. Starring Russell Crowe (Gladiator) as the titular faith fighter, the movie did what it could to scare up box office numbers, but fell lower than Sony Pictures was likely hoping, earning just $77 million against its $18 million production budget. Despite a fine but not excellent financial gain and mixed reviews from critics, which includes a 51% critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is terrorizing its way around the world,...

The True Story of 'Homicide Life on the Street's Calpurnia Church Is Even More Shocking
Image
The acclaimed series Homicide: Life on the Street is finally streaming on Peacock. The groundbreaking police procedural produced by Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson is based on the non-fiction book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by journalist David Simon, who went on to create The Wire. The ensemble cast includes Richard Belzer, Andre Braugher, and Melissa Leo. Many of the cases on the show were lifted from the real cases in Simons book. The most scandalous case in the book was the story of Geraldine Parrish. This real case was turned into a subplot about a woman named Calpurnia Church (Mary Jefferson) in the Season 1 episodes Gone for Goode and Son of a Gun.

‘Prey’ Became a Best-in-Class Prequel by Bringing ‘Predator’ Back to the Basics
Image
Jeff Cutter and Dan Trachtenberg are no strangers to taking residence within larger franchises. The director of photography and director, respectively, have collaborated on feature films set in both the worlds of “Predator” and “Cloverfield” — and delivered best-of entrants along the way.

And both offered unique challenges, too: For Hulu’s “Prey,” the trim, exciting “Predator” prequel from 2022, the duo took advantage of the great outdoors in a massive scope. While their 2016 film “10 Cloverfield Lane” relied on a virtually all-interior pressure cooker set in a John Goodman-run bunker.

“We were probably 95% location,” Cutter said of shooting “Prey,” noting that they “only had three or four stage days where we used stages for campfire scenes.“ He and Trachtenberg shot the prequel with anamorphic lenses over nearly 60 days in Calgary, drumming up the latest project featuring the time-traveling Predator (played here...

Where to Watch The Pope's Exorcist
Image
Learn where you can watch The Pope’s Exorcist, a highly anticipated and thrilling film produced by Sony Pictures.

The Pope's Exorcist is a riveting hour and 43-minute horror and thriller film that follows the story of Father Gabriele Amorth. Amorth is the chief exorcist for the Vatican and spends his days battling a formidable opponent: Satan and his band of demons. In the film, Amorth finds himself deeply embroiled in the investigation of a young boy that leads him to have a centuries-old secret about the Vatican revealed to him.

This film was directed by Julius Avery, an Australian screenwriter and film director. Avery has worked on a number of well-known projects, including Overlord, Son of a Gun, and Samaritan. Academy Award winner Russell Crowe brings this real-life job to the big screen in his portrayal of Father Gabriele Amorth, and some say the role of Father Amorth is a problematic one for Crowe.

‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ Review: The Power of Christ (and Russell Crowe) Mostly Compels You in Yet Another Possession Chiller
Image
On the face of it, “The Pope’s Exorcist” would have you believe that it’s rooted in the real-life experiences of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. Its screenwriting credits proclaim as much, for starters, while a surfeit of onscreen dates and locations in the early going lend proceedings the faintest of docudrama veneers; moreover, the film is backed by the non-profit production arm of the Jesuit research university Loyola Marymount, with Loyola rector Father Edward J. Siebert among its executive producers.

Even Catholics in high places, it turns out, have a sense of humor: You needn’t wait for the “work of fiction” disclaimer in the closing credits to discern that “The Pope’s Exorcist” is ripely fantastical trash, inspired by Amorth’s work in much the same way that SunnyD is inspired by Florida oranges,...

How to Watch ‘Funny Pages': Is the New A24 Film Streaming?
Saoirse Ronan in Lady Bird (2017)
Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.

Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. With the singular goal of getting Wallace to mentor him,...

HBO Max New Releases: August 2022
Image
And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.

Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay in Room (2015)
All the A24 Films Coming to HBO Max in August: ‘Ex Machina,’ ‘Room,’ ‘Amy’ and More
Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay in Room (2015)
An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”

A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.

Some buzzy titles such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Eighth Grade,” “Mid90s” and dozens more are not on this list because of prior deals the studio set up with other streamers. Most A24 films can be found on Apple TV+ and Showtime, who set up deals to serve as the home for a number of their digital releases in 2018 and 2019, respectively. But as those deals near a close,...

Tarantino’s Extended ‘Hateful Eight’ Hits Netflix With Big Surprise: It’s a Four-Episode Miniseries
Netflix excited Quentin Tarantino fans when it announced in March that an extended version of the director’s “The Hateful Eight” would be available to stream this month. The extended edition landed April 25 on Netflix as planned, albeit with one massive surprise: The movie has been uploaded as a miniseries with four episodes each running approximately 50 minutes. The film’s theatrical edition continues to stream on Netflix as a feature film, as well.

The four episodes of “The Hateful Eight: Extended Edition” are titled “Last Stage to Red Rock” (50 minutes), “Minnie’s Haberdashery” (51 minutes), “Domergue’s Got A Secret” (53 minutes), and “The Last Chapter” (56 minutes). The first three episodes match up to corresponding chapter titles in Tarantino’s theatrical cut. The film’s second chapter, “Son of a Gun,” has been absorbed into the extended cut’s first episode. The “Last Chapter” episode encompasses the final two film chapters: “The Four Passengers” and “Black Man,...

Overlord arrived in theaters just before Halloween to much critical acclaim. Sadly, the J.J. Abrams produced WWII sci-fi horror thriller adventure didn't fare quite so well at the box office, failing to attract much attention outside of hardcore film enthusiasts hungry for a crazy Drive-In genre experience that owes quite a lot to Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's From Dusk till Dawn. Now fans will get to see what they missed on the big screen as Overlord takes its final mission to the home market.

Review: Overlord Takes You Through a Nightmarishly Awesome WWII House of Horrors
If you’re looking for an extremely fun horror action-thriller filled with all kinds of gratuitous blood and gore, Overlord is the film for you!

I enjoyed everything that I’ve seen from the film in the trailers that have been released, but they don’t even scratch the surface of how much of an insane wild ride that this movie is! Overlord is an absolute blast and I know horror fans are going to enjoy the hell out of it.

The story is set during World War II and follows members of the 101st Airborn Division dropping into Germany to take down a radio tower located in a church. The movie starts out with one of the most intense sequences that I’ve seen in any WWII movie as the paratroopers are flying into Germany.

As I was watching the film I was thinking, “Damn! This would just make...

‘Overlord’ Film Review: Great Video Game Movie That’s Not Based on a Video Game
Iain De Caestecker, Wyatt Russell, Pilou Asbæk, John Magaro, Jacob Anderson, Jovan Adepo, and Mathilde Ollivier in Overlord (2018)
“Overlord” is one of the best video game movies ever made, and it’s not even based on a video game.

Filmmakers have been struggling for decades to adapt an actual video game story into a great movie, but many films have already successfully adapted the storytelling style of video games to the big screen. Take a look at the checkpoint gameplay mechanics of “Run Lola Run,” and the point-and-click problem solving of “Cop Car.” Consider the daredevil side scrolling of “District B13,” and the destructive fighting-game avatars of “Colossal.”

And now, check out “Overlord,” the ultimate Nazi zombie movie. The genre goes back at least as far as Ken Wiederhorn’s “Shock Waves,” which starred Peter Cushing as a mad scientist building an undead reich on an uncharted island, but it really came to life (pun intended) in video games. By the time the “Wolfenstein” games introduced Mecha-Hitler as a level boss,...

‘Overlord’ Review: Your Basic WWII Soldiers vs. Nazi Super-Zombies Blockbuster
‘Fess up: You wanna see some Nazis get good and fucked up, don’t you?

No, we’re not talking about the current plague of willfully ignorant racists and dangerously unstable, wild-card chuckleheads, though we’d be all too happy to see that collective pox on society fall off the face of the earth. We mean the old kind, the rat bastards who tore through Europe decades ago and still have a hold on the popular imagination as the definition of villainy. There’s no “on both sides” bullshit with these soldiers and S.

Overlord Review
The last decade has seen a surge of “Nazi horror” movies that struck enough of a chord to kick-start a subgenre. Most are risible and bypassed big screens to debut on DVD, prior to perishing in pound store video bins, but there are a few gems amongst the twaddle. Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead is a subgenre standout and one of a small fistful to feature the Nazi undead. Along with the lesser likes of War of the Dead, Frankenstein’s Army and Outpost, these utilised our fear/hatred of Nazism to shape a new supernatural antagonist.

Overlord is the latest Nazi horror and one of very few to make it into cinemas. Following his impressive, criminally under-seen debut Son of a Gun, director Julius Avery, with screenwriters Billy Ray, Mark L Smith and producer Jj Abrams give Nazi horror a bigger budget/ creative bolstering with enthralling results; for Overlord is a frenzied,...

‘Overlord’ director Julius Avery to take the helm of ‘Flash Gordon’ movie
‘Overlord’ director Julius Avery has been announced to take the helm of 20th Century Fox’s rebooted ‘Flash Gordon’.

Avery will also pen the script for the cult hero story. Avery is said to have fallen in love with the comic and decided to pitch the studio his own version of the story. Fox jumped at the chance to bring the age-old story back to life, giving Avery the reigns to take it forward.

‘Flash Gordon’ is the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by and originally drawn by Alex Raymond. The strip was first published in 1934, it was inspired by and created to compete with, the already established ‘Buck Rogers’ adventure strip.

Also in the news – Dev Patel to make his directorial debut with thriller ‘Monkey Man’

The comic strip has since been adapted for TV and movies as well as an animated series. Originally failing at the box office,...

Flash Gordon Movie Gets Overlord Director Julius Avery
Brian Blessed, Max von Sydow, and Sam J. Jones in Flash Gordon (1980)
The Flash Gordon reboot has found its director. Julius Avery, the man behind the upcoming Nazi zombie thriller Overlord, has been tapped by Fox to write and direct the long-gestating project. At one point, X-Men: First Class and Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn was on deck to tackle the popular character's next big screen adventure. He's now stepped down from the director's chair but will remain on board as a producer.

According to a new report, Julius Avery went in and pitched his take to executives at the studio and they liked what he had to say. So, they've officially tapped the Australian filmmaker to write and direct the new Flash Gordon movie. This is being viewed as a potential blockbuster tentpole and has clear franchise potential, assuming things go well. Matthew Vaughn only stepped aside because his take wound up being remarkably similar to what Marvel did with Guardians of the Galaxy.

‘Overlord’ Filmmaker Julius Avery to Direct ‘Flash Gordon’ Movie
Fox has hired “Overlord” director Julius Avery to write and direct a “Flash Gordon” movie.

The studio had been in negotiations in 2015 with “Kingsman” director Matthew Vaughn to helm “Flash Gordon.” Vaughn will now produce with John Davis and Hearst Entertainment & Syndication Group.

Fox senior vice president Matt Reilly is overseeing “Flash Gordon” for the studio. C.J. Kettler is overseeing for Hearst.

Flash Gordon originated in 1934 as a science-fiction comic strip created by and originally drawn by Alex Raymond to compete with the Buck Rogers strip. The story opened with Earth threatened by a collision with the planet Mongo and Flash’s friend Dr. Zarkov inventing a rocket ship in an attempt to stop the disaster. The comic strip led to a serial starring Buster Crabbe and multiple movies and television series.

Avery is an Australian director who made his debut on A24’s “Son of a Gun,” which led...

The Flash Gordon Movie Will Be Helmed By Overlord Director Julius Avery
20th Century Fox is moving forward with their Flash Gordon movie and they hired Overlord director Julius Avery to helm it! Obviously the studio likes what he did with Overlord, which has yet to be released in theaters, but it looks bat-shit crazy!

At one point Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn was looking to direct the Flash Gordon movie, but it looks like he’s just going to produce it now. With all of the Kingsman films that he’s got in development, I guess he just doesn’t have the time.

Flash Gordon was created in 1934 by iconic artist Alex Raymond, and the story follows Dale Arden and the mad scientist Hans Zasrkov, as they end up on the planet Mongo fighting a tyrannical ruler named Ming the Merciless.

I'm a huge fan of Flash Gordon, and I'm pretty excited about what how this new film turns out, especially with...

‘Overlord’ Helmer Julius Avery To Direct ‘Flash Gordon’ Movie At Fox
Exclusive: As Paramount ramps up for the November 9 release of his horror film Overlord, Julius Avery has been set by Fox to write and direct Flash Gordon. This is the potential tent pole that once had Matthew Vaughn circling to direct. Vaughn will instead produce the film with John Davis and Hearst, whose head of film is C.J. Kettler.

Avery is an Australian director who made his debut on the Alicia Vikander-Ewan McGregor-starrer Son Of A Gun, and he made Overlord for Paramount and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest, and has been scaring up good reviews with the horror cognoscenti so far, scoring a 93 on Rottentomatoes.com as it gears up for a November 9 release. Avery grew up in Australia loving the Flash Gordon comic. He pitched his take and the studio and studio sparked to it and set him.

Sitges Review: Julius Avery's WWII Movie 'Overlord' is Loud & Intense
Play this movie as loud as you can. Turn the volume all the way up, strap in, and prepare for an extremely intense cinematic experience. I am a sucker for World War II movies, pretty much any/all of them, so I will happily admit I probably enjoyed this a bit more than most will, unless you're also a fan of WWII movies. With that said, it's an awesome movie anyway. Overlord is a WWII horror movie from Australian director Julius Avery, making his first big studio movie after Son of a Gun in 2014. This time he collaborated with Bad Robot and producer J.J. Abrams to deliver an intense, extra loud, uber violent, enrapturing WWII action movie spiced up with some gnarly horror. It hits real hard, right from the start, but never drags. You have to go see this movie in theaters - the big screen, big sound experience really,...
