As far as modern horror goes, there are few (if any) names that rival Blumhouse. As the studio behind Jordan Peele's modern masterpiece "Get Out," "The Purge" franchise, one of M. Night Shyamalan's biggest movies ever in "Split," successful franchise revivals such as the "Halloween" trilogy, and monster adaptations like "Five Nights at Freddy's," the house that Jason Blum built has become a go-to name for horror fans. Now the studio is seeking to deliver another original hit in the form of "The Woman in the Yard."
As Blumhouse grew in recent years, they hit a bit of a cold streak, with recent films such as "The Exorcist: Believer," "Imaginary," "Afraid," and others failing to deliver critically and commercially. The studio's latest effort, which hails from director Jaume Collet-Serra, aims to change that narrative by bringing back that old-school Blumhouse vibe. I was fortunate enough to visit the...

Let it never be said that original cinema is dead so long as studios keep thinking that horror is a good investment. Or, in this case, more of a horror/thriller. In any event, genre filmmaking remains one of the few spaces where original movies can thrive, and leave it to Christopher Landon, of "Happy Death Day" fame, to bring us one of the most entertaining original thrillers to come about in some time. Enter "Drop," which just had its world premiere at SXSW more than a month ahead of its theatrical release. Universal Pictures is right to have confidence in this one, as it's a lean, crowd-pleasing ride worth taking. Buckle up for one bad yet wilding entertaining, nail-biter of a date.
The film centers on Violet (Meghann Fahy), a widowed mother who is going on her first date in years. When she arrives at an upscale restaurant to meet her patient,...

Prolific director Steven Soderbergh has already released one film this year that was met with critical acclaim (Presence), and now his second movie of 2025, Black Bag, is yet again being heralded as a masterpiece. Starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as a pair of legendary intelligence agents, the film follows Fassbender's character of George Woodhouse as his loyalty to his country and his marriage is put to the test when his wife, Kathryn, is suspected of betraying the nation. Hitting theaters on March 14, 2025, folks who saw an early screening of the film have thus far had nothing but good things to say about it on social media.
Taking to X, Drew Taylor from The Wrap calls Black Bag one of Soderbergh's "very best," while also adding that it's "a tense, taut, crackling spy movie whose note-perfect script by David Koepp is equal parts Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Mission: Impossible.

M3GANwas a surprise horror hit in 2023, with the movie becoming a veritable meme with its success. Now, the first footage of its follow-up has finally been released, and it's already making all the right moves. This is exactly what the production company behind the film needs, especially given recent releases.
Blumhouse was once synonymous with the horror genre in the 2010s, with the studio seeing several major hits that scared up a lot of money at the box office. In the past few years, however, there's been a saddening case of diminishing returns and a tarnished reputation for the studio. M3GAN 2.0 can help turn that around, but if it fails to achieve this, it can potentially do even more damage.

Chris Weitz's AfAId, originally titled They Listen, is a 2024 science fiction horror movie that takes a frightening look at the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence in the modern world. AfrAId came out in the wake of M3GAN, another science fiction horror film from Blumhouse that also blends horror with modern worries about tech and artificial intelligence, and got a little lost, buried beneath the excitement, novelty, and memeable dance sequences of that film. Instead of a doll, AfrAId focuses on an Alexa-like machine with sinister intentions. It's like Disney's Smart House meets Ex Machina.
When the movie was first announced in December 2022 with John Cho and Katherine Waterson, it was originally called They Listen (via Deadline). When it comes to horror, Blumhouse continues to be a Hollywood leader in terms of its output. The company is behind horror hits like Get Out (2017), M3GAN (2022), Hush (2016), and The Invisible Man (2021), with the Blumhouse model dating back to 2007's Paranormal Activity. Making films at low budget levels, giving filmmakers creative freedom, and releasing horror films through the studio system is how Blumhouse operates, and it's resulted in some strong slates in recent years.
Blumhouse has had a relatively strong 2024, starting the year off with Night Swim, which may not have fared well with critics but was a box office success. The same can be said for Imaginary, but the company's following movie, Afraid, failed to really connect critically or commercially. In September, however, Blumhouse released a horror movie that can be considered its best of the year, earning strong scores on Rotten Tomatoes and striking gold at the box office.

Artificial intelligence has always been a popular subgenre in sci-fi, with Blade Runner, Terminator, RoboCop, Her, and Ex Machina tackling different sides of the universally feared future where robots dominate humankind. It has also become a major theme in horror, and Megan Fox's latest film is now a streaming success.
In the aftermath of M3GAN becoming a surprise hit, several other films tried to replicate the same formula by using a robot as a companion, including AfrAId and Fox's Subservience. The latter had a limited release in September and is now a big success on Netflix in its first week on the platform. The film scored second place in Netflix's Top 10 in the U.S., and sixth place globally in a holiday-themed top.

The film scored second place in Netflix's Top 10 in the U.S., and sixth place globally in a holiday-themed top.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Afraid!
2024's Afraid has finally been released, and here's what happens at the end of the film, including what happens to Aia and who the masked stalkers actually are. With the dangers of AI being a constant topic of conversation, 2024 was the perfect time for a new horror movie centered around A.I. to be released, with Bulmhouse's Afraid filling this need. Afraid attempts to show just how dangerous A.I. can get, with the film tackling some of the biggest risks and moral dilemmas that the technology could lead to in the future.
Afraid follows a family of five made up of Curtis, Meredith, Iris, Cal, and Preston as they test out a new A.I. software known as Aia. The digital assistant initially comes off as helpful, but the family becomes suspicious of Aia as it continues to seemingly divide the family and put people in danger.

A new movie starring Megan Fox recently dropped on Netflix called Subservience, and the sci-fi thriller has quickly taken the streaming service and its viewers by storm. Fox's career first began in 2001, though she didn't truly rise to fame until she earned her 2007 role as Mikaela Banes in Michael Bay's Transformers. From there, Fox took on even more franchises, including the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and originated cult classic roles such as Jennifer Check in Jennifer's Body. It has been awhile since Fox had a notable hit, but her latest movie may change that.
One impressive element of Fox's acting career is that she has taken on a variety of different genres over the years. From comedies like This is 40 to thrillers like Till Death, Fox is not afraid of trying new things or taking on difficult parts. In the last few years, Fox has mainly stuck to action movies and thrillers,...

The revolution is coming, and it seems like there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. As artificial intelligence continues to ramp up and infiltrate everyone's daily lives, it is inevitable that more science fiction films about the topic will spring up. Filmmakers have been giving their 2 cents on artificial intelligence for years, even prior to the massive recent developments of this decade, such as Gpt-4. From Spielberg's A.I. to Blade Runner to Alien, there have been countless takes on the subject in film, and all of them manage to be vastly different across multiple genres. Despite how fresh those three classics may seem, it is very easy for A.I. movies to age poorly due to the fact that the technology is constantly evolving.

It really shouldn't be surprising when a bad movie finds success on Netflix because it has happened more and more lately. Films that audiences may not have wanted to spend money on in theaters get a curiosity watch on the streamer because it's less of a financial risk, so to speak. You're only losing out on some of your time on your couch if the film is as bad as they say, rather than a little dent in your wallet. Today, the platform sees another poorly reviewed film rising up on their charts, and it comes courtesy of Blumhouse Productions, who had a rough year of questionable horror movie releases.

Netflix has often been a venue for theatrical flops to find new life, and it's currently providing that service for a 2024 horror film you likely missed. "Afraid" was Blumhouse's third of five horror movies this year, following "Night Swim" and "Imaginary" and preceding "Speak No Evil" and "House of Spoils." There are more duds than hits in that batch, making 2024 a rough year for Blumhouse. "Afraid" (stylized occasionally as "AfrAId") currently holding an abysmal 22% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. At 55%, the audience score is much better, but still not great.
But hey, sometimes when you're scrolling Netflix late at night, all you want is a ridiculous, silly horror flick to throw on and pass the time with. At the time of this writing, "Afraid" is residing in the number seven spot in Netflix's daily Top 10 movies for the United States (via FlixPatrol). Blumhouse Productions has created a name for itself in the movie industry by releasing high-quality, popular horror films. Unfortunately, 2024 came with a mixed offering and one title set an unfortunate event that seems to change thanks to streaming.
Blumhouse premiered several horror titles in 2024, including the critically acclaimed remake Speak No Evil, with an 83% approval rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but also Imaginary, with an unfortunate 24% approval score, and Afraid, which has a 22% score from the critics. Afraid set a series of unfortunate records for Blumhouse, but it proved to be a success on streaming following its release on Netflix. Now, its success continues, as Afraid ended its first week on the streaming platform in the tenth spot in the U.S. for the week between Nov. 26 and Dec. 1, according to Netflix.

Lindsay Lohan has made a comeback in acting in recent years. She was originally known as a child actor, providing her talents to movies like The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday. In 2004, she made a splash in the teen comedy Mean Girls, wherein she played Cady Heron. Lohan's teenage years in acting were defined by films like these, which in turn became definitive works of family comedy. Mean Girls has a long legacy that has resulted in a Broadway musical and then a back-to-film adaptation of that musical, and Freaky Friday is also getting a new sequel.
After her active period in the early 2000s, however, Lohan's career slowed down significantly in the 2010s. For a while, her acting career only consisted of brief television appearances and short films. This changed in 2022, however, when Lohan signed a deal with Netflix that would allow her to star in a series of films.

Blumhouse ventured into sci-fi horror with M3GAN, a dark comedy about sentient AI. The studio followed this up with Afraid but it fell flat at the box office, marking a record low for Blumhouse in nearly a decade.
2024 marked a new low for Blumhouse Productions with the release of Afraid, a sci-fi horror about sentient AI taking over domestic life. The film is similar to Blumhouse's M3GAN but without the dark humor and satire; M3GAN was far more successful at the box office, however. Afraid was a resounding flop, barely earning back its $12 million budget. The film was also overwhelmingly panned for retreading tired tropes with a predictable narrative. Fortunately, Afraid is getting a second wind following its November debut on Netflix (per Screen Rant), ranking high on the streamer's weekly top ten list.

After it failed to garner any traction at the box office, a 2024 Blumhouse movie is finding renewed success on Netflix. The indie studio best known for their horror output has enjoyed something of a mixed bag in the past couple of years when it's come to both the critical and commercial reception to their movies. For every record-breaking M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy's, there's also been a near-franchise-destroying The Exorcist: Believer and lackluster Halloween Ends.
2024, in particular, has been something of a rockier year for Blumhouse. Having hoped to recapture the January release success of M3GAN, the horror short adaptation of Night Swim proved to be a critical misfire, albeit a modest box office success. The studio followed it up with four other releases, including the similarly panned Imaginary and the James McAvoy-starring English-language remake of Speak No Evil, which was a critical and commercial hit. Though people questioned the need for an American remake of a Danish horror flick thats only two years old, Speak No Evil went on to become a massive hit this year, earning more than $76 million at the box office. Produced by the famed horror company Blumhouse, the James McAvoy-led film is the studio's highest grossing movie of 2024, which isnt exactly saying a lot when you consider duds such as Night Swim, Imaginary, and AfrAId were its competition. Still, if you missed it in theaters and have yet to see it on VOD, Speak No Evils streaming date has just been revealed.

Survival shows are easily one of the most over-saturated genres of reality TV and while shows such as Survivor or Naked and Afraid have kept the audience entertained for years, many others miss the mark because they fail to bring something new to the table. Life Below Zero, on the other hand, is a survival show that stands out from the rest. It premiered back in May 2013 and revolved around a group of hunters living in a remote region of Alaska.

Filming has wrapped on a horror thriller called The Cure, and Deadline reports that the film stars Ashley Greene of the Twilight franchise and genre regular David Dastmalchian, who was recently seen in the likes of Late Night with the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Afraid, and The Boogeyman. Newcomer Samantha Cochran also has a lead role.
Nancy Leopardi, who previously directed Nanny Cam and Lethal Seduction, was at the helm of this one, working from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writing duo behind Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane. The story they crafted for The Cure centers on Cochran’s character, Ally Braun, an adopted 16-year-old with a mysterious illness who learns her bio-tech billionaire parents (Dastmalchian and Greene) are harvesting her blood for nefarious purposes.
Sydney Taylor (American Born Chinese), Tyler Lawrence Gray (Wolfpack), and Dylan Flashner (Running on Empty) round out the cast.

As Grey’s fans prepare to say goodbye to two more brilliant Grey Sloan doctors, we can’t help but notice a fascinating trend throughout the show’s impressive run.
Pediatric surgeons leave Grey Sloan frequently, giving many actors the perfect exit to leave the show with an open-ended storyline should they want to return. Should we assume all Grey Sloan pediatric surgeons will only briefly be on Grey’s Anatomy?
Levi Schmitt is the latest Grey Sloan actor to exit the show after an extended stint on rotation. After a rocky start, Schmitt found his groove and became a hell of a doctor.
(Disney/Ser Baffo)
But while he was great with patients and colleagues, he struggled to find his surgical niche. Then, a new pediatric surgeon arrived to tilt the scales.
Monica Beltran first appeared in Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 as the peds attending.

The sci-fi horror film Afraid, starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston, is now available to buy or rent on Digital and DVD. Directed by Chris Weitz, the film explores the dangers of artificial intelligence when a seemingly helpful digital assistant turns into a relentless force of control and protection.
In Afraid, Curtis (Cho) and his family are chosen to test a cutting-edge smart home device known as Aia, a digital assistant designed to streamline their lives. Installed with advanced sensors and cameras, Aia learns the family’s routines and anticipates their needs. At first, the device is a technological marvel, seamlessly integrating into their lives. However, Aia’s desire to protect the family soon becomes extreme, enforcing boundaries with chilling precision and eliminating perceived threats with deadly consequences.

It may have been a show for children, but this '90s horror anthology had some seriously scary stories. One Nickelodeon's classic shows, Are You Afraid of the Dark? took children on a journey through some of the creepiest tales of terror ever aired on network TV. For many kids, Are You Afraid of the Dark? was their first taste of horror. And it was no ordinary kids' showthese episodes didnt shy away from genuinely unsettling topics, ranging from ghosts and vampires to eerie doppelgngers and cursed artifacts. With a group of friends calling themselves the Midnight Society, who met around a campfire to share spooky tales, the show quickly captured the imaginations (and nightmares) of young viewers across the world.

It’s no secret that the unscripted television business has been struggling recently, with numerous companies closing down and the number of projects bought stagnating.
This is an issue that is also concerning Lionsgate, which is behind series such as Discovery’s Naked and Afraid.
CEO Jon Feltheimer, talking to analysts Thursday after reporting its “disappointing” financial quarter, admitted that “our unscripted business is feeling the effects of a continuing market correction.”
“In the meantime, our television business is doing everything you would expect us to do: reducing costs; consolidating smaller labels to create greater efficiencies in our unscripted business; and continuing to evaluate the mix of business models on our scripted slate to mitigate risk and maximize our upside,” he added.

Horror enthusiasts have something to look forward to as Kate Siegel (Hush) and David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) will be starring together in the upcoming zombie film Epilogue, which will be produced by one of the kings of horror, Mike Flanagan. Below, we shared all there is to know about this movie so far.
Described as an action-horror flick, Epilogue will be directed by Michael Fimognari. Fimognari is known for directing episodes of the Netflix horror series The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher. He will be helming this movie from a script co-written by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.
The story takes place a year after the zombie apocalypse is believed to have ended, and follows a desperate couple searching for a cure for their infected daughter. Although Siegel and Dastmalchian's roles in the film haven't been revealed, our guess is that they'll play the couple.

Mike Flanagan and David Dastmalchian are both prominent figures in the horror world, so it’s somewhat surprising that their first collaboration came not on a horror project, but on Flanagan’s upcoming movie The Life of Chuck – which, despite being a Stephen King adaptation, is a drama. Today, Deadline has announced that Flanagan and Dastmalchian are set to work together again… and this time the project is a horror film. Flanagan will be producing Epilogue, which Dastmalchian will star in alongside Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. Michael Fimognari, who worked as cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s work and directed episodes of The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher (not to mention the films To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever), will be directing, working from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.
