Odd though it may seem, part of the reason "Jurassic Park" endures as a blockbuster classic is surely due to its horror elements. Like director Steven Spielberg's "Jaws," the 1993 movie gets downright hair-raising at times — an experience made all the more visceral by the fact there are two young children enduring the ordeal.
Alongside Drs. Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm, and Ellie Sattler, John Hammond's (Richard Attenborough) grandchildren find themselves stranded on Isla Nubar after the power goes down and several ravenous dinos are set free. Tim and Lex Murphy (Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards) provided a proxy for kids everywhere, putting young imaginations straight into the heart of the film and making the terrifying set-pieces all the more effective as a result.
Since the 1993 classic debuted, the "Jurassic Park" franchise has continued, remaining a popular saga even some 30 years after Spielberg's original bowed. However, while several of...

Jurassic World 3 is looking better and better every day, and it’s not even slated to hit theaters until June of 2021. Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, and Laura Dern will be bringing back the original team of mathematician Ian Malcolm, Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler, that much is a fact. You better cross your fingers though, because the kids from the original movies say they’re also open to returning.
Almost immediately upon hearing about the return of the Og three, fans went nuts and started campaigning for them to make their way back to the franchise, too. We use the term “kids” loosely here, though, as Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards are now 36 and 40 years old, respectively. They played Tim and Lex, grandchildren to Richard Attenborough’s John Hammond, in the original film. We lost Attenborough in 2014, and seeing how pretty much every other main character from...

Regardless of how you feel about horror anthology films, it’s obvious that they aren’t going anywhere. And why would they? The format allows for nascent filmmakers to flex their chops on a short segment before feeling the pressure of a full feature; and given that the short story is the most prominent and effective form of horror (just look at the masters: Poe, Lovecraft, Matheson), it also provides the opportunity to experience these tales visually without stretching them thin to reach standard film length. It’s like reading a literary magazine from cover to cover: different styles, different effects, different scares. I’m all for it.
Our friends over at Reel Progress are working straight from literary short stories for their new anthology film Creepers. Check out the full press release.

For those who were curious about this film we profiled last October, when it was in production, you should know that it's now available for streaming on Netflix, if you have a Netflix streaming account. The thriller was previously titled Wards Island, when we first alerted you to it last year, but it's now called Battledogs. The film, which stars Dennis Haysbert, Ariana Richards, Ernie Hudson, Craig Scheffer, and Bill Duke, centers on a viral outbreak in New York City that turns the infected into werewolves. Alexander Yellen is its director, making his directorial debut. The film was shot in Buffalo, which stood in for New York...

For anyone thinking the absolute best film that depicts werewolves being considered as military weapons is “Dog Soldiers”, keep thinking that. However, if you want to be pleasantly surprised, you could give Battledogs a try. This is an Asylum film. I have no prejudices whatsoever towards anything made by The Asylum. I can’t say I like everything they do, but I definitely can’t say I hate it all.
The success of “Sharknado” has us all questioning the notion that we are too good to watch mostly made for TV Syfy schlock, but without all the 1970’s, 80’s, and 90’s schlock that I and every other Gen X and Y horror fan watched and loved, we would miss out on great filmmakers today who were inspired then. Maybe even miss out on all those reviewers who write about the new films fueled by...

Actress Lynn Lowry has joined the cast of Sam Qualiana’s upcoming found footage monster movie The Legend of Six Fingers, according to author and filmmaker Gregory Lamberson, who is producing.
Writer-director Qualiana and Lamberson previously collaborated on Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast and worked together on Chris Olen Ray’s Battledogs and Debbie Rochon’s Model Hunger. Lowry, memorable for her roles in George Romero’s The Crazies and David Cronenberg’s Shivers (aka They Came from Within), starred in Model Hunger, currently in post-production.
“I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that Lynn is amazing in Model Hunger,” says Lamberson. “It’s a benchmark performance that ranks up there with Terry O’Quinn’s work in The Stepfather, and Sam and I are thrilled to have her in The Legend of Six Fingers. We’ve got some impressive talent on this project.”

Ernie Hudson is in talks to join the cast of a new TNT period drama series titled Lost Angels, from Frank Darabont. Lost Angels tells the story of the 1940s/50s battle between the Lapd and the West Coast mob. Assuming an agreement is reached, Hudson will play a character named Bunny, who's described as a mobster in control of the clubs and similar joints along Central Avenue, who also happens to work for Bugsy Siegel. Up next for Hudson, see him in the werewolf outbreak thriller Battledogs, alongside Dennis Haysbert, Ariana Richards, Craig Scheffer, and Bill Duke.

Syfy has announced the dates for its upcoming season/series premieres and finales, and it holds a lot of promise as well as at least one laugh. Season finales have been set for Being Human – But Where’S The Next Season Renewal, Syfy? Let’S Get Going On That – and Lost Girl, as well as new unscripted offerings Robot Combat League and Stranded. Premiere dates, as we’ve already told you, for the Mmo game-linked Defiance and for fan favorite Warehouse 13 are now confirmed, as well as the return of Ghost Hunters.
New unscripted series announced include a paranormal show with a southern accent, Deep South Paranormal, and a William Shatner-hosted – Yes, William Shatner – examination of stories of the bizarre and unexplained entitled Weird or What? Yes, a nice title, but once again the Syfy Original Movie has offered up the best chuckleworthy title of the season: Stonados.
