The series, created by Todd J. Greenwald, originally aired for four seasons between October 2007 and January 2012 on the Disney Channel.

The show follows Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), a teen wizard who, along with her siblings Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T. Austin), train their magical abilities knowing they’ll compete to win sole custody of their family’s powers one day.

A movie arrived in 2009, which became the second most-viewed Disney Channel Original Movie premiere at that time. However, considering the time between the shows, the cast has grown up, and as a result, it wasn't possible to bring everyone back again.

Despite this, the new series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, feels eerily similar to the original show, and for good reason. Throughout the series, several new characters are introduced alongside David Henrie, who returned to reprise his role as Justin Russo throughout Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. And while the characters may be new, it seems the show has repeated the formula for the earlier success, simply casting new characters in the roles of the originals.

The show ran from 2007-2012, with Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie also airing on the Disney Channel in 2009. The cast returned for a stand-alone television special, The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, in 2013.

There have been rumors of another reunion ever since and now, after a decade, Disney is making them a reality.

Selena Gomez attended Disney Upfront today, May 14, and announced the title of a new series: Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, a continuation of the Emmy Award-winning Wizards of Waverly Place, which previously starred Gomez.

Disney Channel has given an official series order to its “Wizards of Waverly Place” sequel, this time with the working title “Wizards.” Original stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie are set to exec produce, while Gomez will appear in a guest role and Henrie will be back full time as a series regular.

Jake, who formerly starred on The Wizards of Waverly Place as Max Russo, reportedly wasn’t at the scene when his Audi crashed into three parked cars on the street. It also isn’t known if he was driving the car when it crashed.

After the Audi hit the other cars, someone inside the vehicle threw a bottle of vodka at a nearby building, and the driver and passengers called a car service to get them before police arrived, witnesses told the outlet. They described one person who was in the car as a white male with dark hair.

Selena Gomez is back to executive-produce and star in the television event, "The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex" -- a movie based on the late "Wizards of Waverly Place" series -- airing on Friday, March 15 at 8 p.m. Est.

Along with Gomez, Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, David DeLuise and Gregg Sulkin will co-star. Though David Henrie will not be back for "The Wizards Return," Beau Mirchoff of "Awkward" fame joins the cast.

In "The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex," the Russo family -- along with Harper (Stone) and Mason (Sulkin) -- travel to Tuscany to meet their long-lost relatives.
