Former Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman has revealed why a return for her character Martha Jones was scrapped. Martha was the Tenth Doctor's main companion in Doctor Who's third season, where she traveled the world amassing forces to help free humanity from The Master's enslavement.
Martha was then brought back as part of an all-star team of former Doctor Who companions in season four's two part finale, where Ten (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) called all of their friends together to fight off a Dalek invasion of earth. These episodes saw Martha seemingly being recruited by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) to join his black-ops team, though full-time appearances in the Torchwood spinoff series never materialized.

It hardly needs mentioning, but not all science fiction is created equal. Even as a term, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what constitutes sci-fi, especially in a medium like TV that can change so much from week to week or season to season. So when we took stock of the best TV shows from the past two decades, we tried to take a hard line separating the sci-fi from the fantasy.
That’s not to say that a few of the shows might have an odd sword or two, but most of what we tried to single out here imagines a world markedly different from our own. Some take place in reimagined futures, while others take a sharper focus on the present with some key, otherworldly changes.
So, follow us down the rabbit hole to some of the most thrilling, thought-provoking —and in many cases, utterly horrifying — alternate...

Nicolas Cage's latest horror movie, Arcadian, is available to stream, but is it actually worth watching? Cage has steadily acted in some strong horror films in the past several years, and Arcadian is another solid entry in that line-up. Premiering at South by Southwest in March 2024, Arcadian revolves around a family of three that is trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monsters. The movie was written by Michael Nilon and directed by Benjamin Brewer, who was a visual effects artist on Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Alongside Nicolas Cage, the film stars Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins as his teenage sons. Sadie Soverall rounds out the main cast of the film. Arcadian helps Nicolas Cage continue his critical win streak, but ultimately, is Arcadian actually worth watching?

Actor Aml Ameen left Sense8 before season 2, and thanks to his performance in the show's first volume many wonder why Capheus was recast. The Wachowski sisters (The Matrix) created Sense8, which follows 8 strangers from different countries and cultures who come to realize they have a psychic connection and can share emotions, knowledge, and skills with one another. They belong to a rare breed of human beings known as “sensates,” but their shared connection soon leads to them being hunted down by shadowy forces.
Capheus, an African bus driver inspired by martial arts movies, was one of the most likable members of the core sensate group. It was announced prior to the arrival of Sense8 season 2 that Aml Ameen, who played Capheus, quit the show and would be replaced by Toby Onwumere. A 2009 martial arts movie produced by the Wachowskis is performing well during its run on streaming. The Wachowskis made their directorial debut with the crime thriller Bound in 1996, after penning the screenplay for 1995 Sylvester Stallone movie Assassins. But the siblings shot to global fame when they wrote and directed the 1999 science fiction action film The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. The movie was met with widespread critical acclaim, and is considered a modern classic, as well as one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction films ever made.
Following the unexpected success of The Matrix, the duo wrote and directed The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions (both 2003), as well as expanding The Matrix franchise in the realm of video games and animation. Netflix has paved the way for many amazing TV shows in the last 15 years, revolutionizing the television landscape. However, because of its international reach and ambitious plans, the platform has not always been able to keep up with all the projects it initiates, often leading to the cancelation of some of its best series. Sometimes, TV shows need more seasons to reach their full potential. As a consequence, many promising stories have been abandoned, leaving their viewers yearning for more.
Some of these cancelations were caused by factors outside Netflix's control the Covid-19 pandemic being a major example. However, many of the canceled TV shows had such an exceptional critical reception and committed fanbase that their sudden ending felt unjustified. Due to their original renewal plans, some stories ended on shocking cliffhangers, leaving fans without closure. Chuck Lorre is best known for his sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Mom, and The Kominsky Method. Known as the king of sitcoms, Lorre seemed to have cracked the code when it came to multi-cam comedies, with shows like Tbbt becoming staples of pop culture.
However, he seemed to have misfired with Netflix’s Disjointed. The Kathy Bates starrer followed a marijuana advocate and the employees in her cannabis store. While the reviews were middling at best, the show was known for its edgy humor, with one episode talking about the Illuminati conspiracy. It was canceled after one season.

In January 2007, the pioneering DVD-by-mail rental service Netflix launched a streaming media platform, introducing the idea of video on demand via an Internet connection. A the time of launch, Netflix only had 1,000 films available for streaming. A month later, Netflix would mail out its billionth DVD to a customer, which marked the beginning of the end. In the following years, thanks to partnerships made with studios and broadcasters like Disney, Warner Bros., Viacom, DreamWorks, The CW, and AMC, Netflix's streaming service was proving more popular than the mail subscription service that built their company.
But on February 1, 2013, a massive shift occurred when Netflix released "House of Cards," its first original, United States-produced series exclusive to the streamer. Territory season 1 embellishes its dangerous neo-Western story and setting with scarce but effective song choices. The new Netflix series puts impressive effort into developing its drama with authenticity, building every aspect of its world with high-quality production value. Aside from outstanding performances from Territory's cast and a solid script, what the TV series really excels at is establishing a unique atmosphere that's simultaneously dangerous and captivating. Music is a vital tool in making that work.
While music is fairly abundant in Territory, a majority of the soundtrack is the musical score from composers Johnny Klimek and Gabriel Mounsey. The two have collaborated on various projects, such as The Matrix Resurrections, and they've also both worked on other Netflix TV shows like Boy Swallows Universe and Sense8. Everyone's got a show whose cancellation still shakes them to their core. For some, it's Netflix's brilliant sci-fi "Sense8." For others, it was the wrestling dramedy "Glow"... also produced by Netflix. Honestly, if you've been around long enough, there's a high chance you've gotten your heart broken by Netflix at some point. The streaming service has become public enemy #1 for many a TV fan; they're more likely to cancel your favorite series than they are to greenlight another season of it. That habit even extends to shows that, by all accounts, found critical and commercial success, like "Shadow and Bone." The series achieved a rare feat by scoring a loyal following, critical buzz, and solid streaming numbers — but that didn't stop it from getting the axe after its second season.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski used to work as a filmmaking duo, bringing us the likes of Bound, The Matrix and its first two sequels, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending, while also scripting the likes of V for Vendetta and Assassins, plus creating the TV series Sense8. In recent years, they have been focusing on separate projects, with Lana making The Matrix Resurrections solo while Lilly has been working on the Showtime series Work in Progress and a movie called Trash Mountain. Now, during an interview with Autostraddle, Lilly has revealed that she has several other projects in the works, including an adaptation of the horror novel Manhunt.
Lilly Wachowski said, “I have my fingers in a lot of different projects. Some of the projects are big, some of the projects are small, but they’re all queer and trans. I’ve just written a script with my partner...

Netflix is not consistently opposed to canceling series, as it has done in the past with popular ones like Sense8 and The Get Down. The streaming service also has plenty of popular shows that have run for four, five, or even more seasons. Grace and Frankie currently remains Netflix's longest-running series to date, having concluded its run after seven successful seasons. However, there's another show poised to snatch this honor away.
Grace and Frankie ranks among the best long-running shows, meaning those with at least four seasons. As such, it's in good company with several others that Netflix fans enjoy, such as the supernatural Stranger Things and the hit prison show Orange Is The New Black. That said, there are a lot more long-running shows on Netflix for fans to watch, and they come in a wide range of genres.

"The Boys" showrunner Eric Kripke announced earlier this year that his five-season plan for the show is indeed still happening. The next season will the be the last one, even if the show's spinoff(s) may continue indefinitely. It's a relief to a lot of fans who worried the show was dragging things out too much, but it's also a slight disappointment to actor Laz Alonso, who plays Mother's Milk. In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Alonso revealed his idea for the series finale's format:
"I've been unsuccessfully pitching that we end the show with a feature film to Eric. Like, make the last episode of season 5 a cliffhanger and announce the film that we've been filming since the beginning of the series, pretty much... But [Kripke] always somehow gets out of that one."
When asked if he'd want the movie to be released in theaters, Alonso indicated yes,...

Starz just dropped a killer new trailer and key art for its upcoming dark comedy “Sweetpea,” premiering Thursday, October 10 (8pm Et/Pt). The six-part series stars Ella Purnell as Rhiannon Lewis, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. At its core, the series is about a woman finally finding her voice, told through a uniquely dark and comedic lens.
Here’s the official description from Starz: Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s...

All episodes of Twilight of the Gods are now streaming on Netflix, and the review embargo for Zack Snyder's adult animated Norse mythology series lifted around the same time the show premiered.
This isn't always a great sign, but the first wave of reviews have been mostly very positive.
Snyder's work has rarely gone over well with critics, but his last Netflix collaboration - the Rebel Moon movies - really came in for a drubbing. So far, Twilight of the Gods has fared a lot better.
Though there are some negative verdicts, the majority of write-ups praise the animation style, world-building, voice-acting and bloody action - although it sounds like Snyder may have overindulged in the graphic violence and sex a little too much for some tastes.
Have a read through the reviews below, and we'll be sure to update once we have a Rotten Tomatoes score.

Most TV viewers have had to cope with losing a beloved show that was canceled way too soon. Sometimes, a show needs more than a season to find its footing, but the television climate doesn't always allow a series that kind of time to find an audience. One platform known to cancel a TV series way too early is Netflix, despite once taking the stance of allowing their shows to find an audience. The list of canceled Netflix series is so vast now that a hashtag has gone viral on social media as fans remember and shed a tear for some of the platform's fallen TV projects.
If you head over to X, you will find that #NetflixCancels is trending as fans discuss a slew of shows that were killed on the platform far too soon. Much of this seems to have been sparked by a 2017 post on Netflix's then-official Twitter page that states,...

“Baby Reindeer” star Nava Mau may be becoming a trans role model following the success of the Netflix drama and her Emmy nomination for her work on the show, but the actor isn’t ready to call herself an “activist.”
“I really shy away from that word because I think that people who are activists are often times involved with organizing and I deeply respect that work,” Mau told me Friday at the Television Academy’s Performer Nominee Celebration at The Wallis in Beverly Hills. “I tend to call myself an advocate.”
Mau’s nod for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie makes her the first transgender woman nominated in that category.
She becomes emotional when talking about hearing from trans youth who thank her for her visibility. “It makes me cry a little bit,” Mau said.

Zack Snyder's adult animated Norse mythology series, Twilight of the Gods, is set to premiere on Netflix on September 19, and the streamer has now released an action-packed final trailer.
This full-length promo spotlights plenty of bloody battles, as a mortal warrior named Sigrid enlists the aid of Loki (probably not a great idea) to wage war against Thor after the vengeful God of Thunder murders her entire family.
"In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds, and great despair, Leif (Stuart Martin), a mortal king, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love," reads the updated synopsis. "On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor (Pilou Asbæk), which sets them — and a crew of crusaders — on a merciless mission for vengeance, against all odds. Since there are so many new shows added to Netflix each month, it's tough to know which shows are the right ones for you. Maybe you start watching a show that's advertised to you or has been popular on the top 10, and then randomly in the middle, there's an instance of violence or nudity you weren't expecting to see. That can often happen with TV-ma-rated shows.
Obviously, before watching a new show on Netflix, viewers like to be as informed as possible on what they are about to spend their hard-earned free time watching. On Aug. 29, Netflix released Kaos, a dark fantasy series that centers on the exploits of Greek gods and other mythological situations. The subject matter alone makes way for some potential content and trigger warnings.

Sci-fi romances that involve some kind of interplanetary expedition don’t really have happy endings, do they? Star Wars, as a franchise, is one of the biggest space operas in existence and it is plagued with doomed romances. Solaris is responsible for the “sad men in space” template. For the most part, the two Dune movies by Denis Villeneuve focused on the love story forming between Paul Atreides and Chani, and by the end of the second film, it seemed like Chani will try to kill Paul. Jupiter Ascending (which is a movie I like!), Passengers, and the Avatar movies are kind of the outliers here, I guess. But the exception proves the rule, i.e. if your romantic couple is in a sci-fi movie (even if it’s a short film), then it won’t last. So, let’s talk about Alpha 27.

The Umbrella Academy has just premiered its final season, but there are plenty of options for shows if you like it!
The Umbrella Academy has been one of Netflix’s biggest original series. Based on the cult comic book, six superpowered kids are brought together by a millionaire to save the world. The show is known for its outlandish characters and storytelling, mixing alternate timelines, time travel and more alongside situations no other show can take on. The fourth season will wrap up the story and end the show.
Thankfully, there are some good shows just like Umbrella Academy out there. Some are based on comic books, a mix of superheroes, fantasy, sci-fi, and more with an offbeat style and pretty crazy. Streaming offers many options, while these fifteen shows are right up the alley for Umbrella Academy fans to check out if you want an unusual type of heroic show!

A-list movie directors are increasingly creating TV shows, thanks to the creative freedom offered by streaming platforms. Some TV shows, like "Band of Brothers," continue a director's exploration of a certain theme. Directors like David Fincher and the Wachowski sisters bring their unique styles to TV shows like "Mindhunter" and "Sense8".
A-list movie directors sometimes take time out from their regular careers to create TV shows, many of which have scooped several awards. The advent of streaming has attracted more movie directors to TV than ever before, especially since streaming platforms often offer unrestricted creative freedom. This results in some bold TV shows that reflect a director's style.
Sometimes, a TV show starts life as an idea for a movie, but the director reconsiders this after working on it further. Not too long ago, movie directors would rarely consider making a TV show, but there is now more money and prestige associated with TV.

Netflix original series offer diverse and innovative content, appealing to discerning audiences seeking compelling narratives and unique perspectives. Shows like Sense8, Kingdom, and Maniac push the boundaries of television storytelling, diving deep into intricate narratives and controversial themes. From global sci-fi dramas to historical horror series, Netflix originals like Dark, Caliphate, and Travelers captivate viewers with immersive plots and thought-provoking themes.
Over the years, Netflix has been building an extensive and diverse original content portfolio. While many of them have become household names, some brilliant shows get less credit than they deserve. These are shows with big emotions and lots of stylized action. From tension-fueled crime dramas to thought-provoking science fiction, these Netflix originals are pushing the boundaries of television and are must-sees for discerning audiences.
There are, after all, a huge number of series that may not go mainstream but hold their ground above average in both appeal and craft.

Described as a “deviously twisted coming-of-rage story,” the six-part Starz series “Sweetpea” is headed our way this October, and the official teaser trailer has arrived this morning.
Ella Purnell stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder.
In the Starz series, “Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret?”
The ensemble cast includes Nicôle Lecky as Julia,...

Skynet is making its return: the trailer for the Netflix animated series “Terminator Zero” has been revealed.
The series follows the aftermath of Skynet, an AI being, gaining consciousness and waging its war against humanity in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” It becomes self-aware on Aug. 29, 1997, after which a war rages on for decades.
“Terminator Zero” is set in 2022 and follows a soldier, Eiko (Rosario Dawson), who is sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She journeys back to 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland), who is working on another AI system, Kokono (Sonoya Mizuno) to compete with Skynet. Although it exists in the Terminator universe, it centers entirely around new characters.
The trailer sees Lee attempting to save the Earth from Skynet, while being hunted down by an assassin from the future.
Timothy Olyphant and Ann Dowd round out the voice cast. David Ellison,...

Post-2005 Doctor Who main TV-show companions. That’s the first qualifier to add to the following list. For now at least, we’re celebrating only the Nu-Who main companions who had their own proper stint travelling in the Tardis, or any of the many wonderful actors who preceded them in the classic era.
Now that the rationale has been set out, join us to round up some of the best after-Who roles from the likes of Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, Catherine Tate, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Jenna Coleman, Pearl Mackie, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole. It’s too early to add Millie Gibson to this gang but look out for her in rebooted period drama The Forsyte Saga when it arrives.

It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.
With editorial contributions from Liz Shannon Miller, Ben Travers, and Hanh Nguyen.

Forget summer blockbusters. On July 1, ABC’s six-season hit series Lost became available for streaming on Netflix and the show’s availability on not one, but two major streaming services (the other being Hulu) has skyrocketed the story of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 back into the spotlight. From original fans of the series, which ran from 2004 to 2010, to new Dharma Initiative recruits, all eyes are on the lush island where characters like Jack, Kate, and Sawyer found themselves fighting to survive and keep their own dark secrets hidden.
Lost’s renaissance is sure to leave a new generation of viewers asking questions about the mythology of the island, the story of its strange inhabitants, and what the heck happened in the final episode. And, don’t even get us started on explaining the series’ epilogue, which new viewers won’t find on Netflix or Hulu. There’s also bound...
