Why the World Never Fell Out of Love with the Prince of Darkness
Image
Ozzy Osbourne told Rolling Stone in 2002 he already knew what his epitaph would say. “I guarantee that if I was to die tonight, tomorrow it would be, ‘Ozzy Osbourne, the man who bit the head off a bat, died in his hotel room …’” he said. “I know that’s coming.” He’d made his peace with that fate. “I’ve got no complaints. At least I’ll be remembered.” But Ozzy got this one wrong. The world is in mourning for him, after the news of his death yesterday at...

Lily Sullivan in Monolith (2022)
New footage of a cancelled Batman Arkham video game surfaces online
Lily Sullivan in Monolith (2022)
The only thing stronger than the fear Batman inflicts on his enemies is the hero's popularity. The Caped Crusader is no stranger to appearing in multiple projects across live-action movies, animated TV series, and even acclaimed video games. But from all the fantastic tales he's starred in, one of the most iconic is the Batman: Arkham saga. A decade later, each entry in this beloved trilogy still makes a case for one of the best superhero video games ever created. Unfortunately, what followed wasn't nearly as memorable.

Gotham Knights failed to make an impression on gamers, while the latest entry in the Arkham saga, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, wasn't nearly as big of a success as Rocksteady hoped it would be. Now, the future of DC's video game remains a mystery as Monolith's Wonder Woman—their only confirmed project—was officially cancelled. So, we need to ask...

New Concept Art For Unmade Batman: Arkham Knight Sequel Features Damian Wayne As Batman, Huntress, And More
Image
Batman: Arkham Knight ended by killing Bruce Wayne. It brought Rocksteady's incredible trilogy to a close, and despite the Caped Crusader's death, rumours have persisted that a follow-up might be in the works.

Of course, the less said about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the better.

It was back in 2021 when we first shared concept art from a scrapped Arkham Knight follow-up, revealing that Bruce would have returned as a much older Batman.

The game's lead was going to be an adult Damian Wayne, kitted out in a Batsuit with many similarities to the "Batman Beyond" costume. We don't know exactly why it didn't happen or whether it could be resurrected down the line, but it appears this title didn't get past the early development/concept art stage.

Lessening the blow somewhat is that "Project Sabbath" wasn't being developed by Rocksteady; instead, Warner Bros. Games Montreal, the team...

‘Sabbath Queen’ Review: A Queer Rabbi Proffers an Alternative Judaism in Sandi DuBowski’s Ambitious Documentary
Image
Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Tribeca Festival. Roco Films releases “Sabbath Queen” on November 22.

Amichai Lau-Lavie wants to get inside the system of Judaism like a virus. A Radical Faerie, a drag queen, a rabbi, and an openly gay man, Amichai is the focus of Sandi DuBowski’s ambitious documentary “Sabbath Queen,” filmed over two decades. Amichai founded a God-optional congregation that erupted established systems of practice in his religious denomination — but the movie follows Amichai into a not-so-hairpin turn toward conservatism in recent years. “Sabbath Queen” finds filmmaker DuBowski skewing away from hagiography and instead toward an active questioning of Amichai’s life’s work. Taking on multiple decades of the man’s life means this film loses its way sometimes amid a scattered approach, but “Sabbath Queen” shrewdly asks hard questions about what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century. Especially...

Image
A new rumor is currently going viral that has shocked the gaming industry. Rocksteady Studios is reportedly working on a new Batman game and Sony is trying its best to make it a PlayStation exclusive. Obviously, the Xbox community disapproved of this and shared some wild ideas.

Rocksteady Studios, which is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Games, also developed three games in the iconic Batman: Arkham series. However, their latest installment in the series, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, was a massive let-down. Nothing is confirmed at the moment and even if the rumor is true, players will have to wait for a long time.

Chattanooga 2024 Review: The Vourdalak Delivers a Different Kind of Vampire Tale
Image
Long considered the ur-text for the depiction of vampirism in fiction, Bram Stoker’s Dracula may be the most influential (the “trope-creator”), but it was far from the first. Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novel, Carmilla, preceded Stoker’s by more than two decades, but even Le Fanu’s novel doesn’t qualify. That title likely falls to Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy’s (Tsar Boris, Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich, The Death of Ivan the Terrible) lesser-known 1839 novella, The Family of the Vourdalak, The Vampire. Direct adaptations of Tolstoy’s novella have been few and far between, first as part of Mario Bava’s 1963 anthology film, Black Sabbath, and later as The Night of the Devils 11 years later. Both took liberties with Tolstoy’s novella, leaving a faithful – or more faithful – adaptation up for grabs. That, in...

Mark Damon, Actor Turned Indie Film Exec and ‘Monster’ Producer, Dies at 91
Image
Mark Damon, who starred in the Vincent Price horror classic House of Usher and spaghetti Westerns before revolutionizing the foreign sales and distribution film business and producing features including 9 1/2 Weeks, Monster and Lone Survivor, has died. He was 91.

Damon died Sunday of natural causes in Los Angeles, his daughter, Alexis Damon Ribaut, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Damon spent the first 20 years of his career as an actor, including about a dozen as a leading man in Italian action movies, before he transitioned to the business side.

He had early success as an executive producer with two movies written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen: the German-language World War II drama Das Boot (1981), which received six Oscar nominations, and The NeverEnding Story (1984), a big-budget fantasy film that featured a Damon-commissioned score by Giorgio Moroder for non-German audiences.

He shared an Independent Spirit Award with director Patty Jenkins and others...

Ever find yourself breaking into someone’s house with the intention of not taking anything of value… just VHS tapes? I’m sure you’re thinking “Oh great, another found footage film. What can this one do for me that I haven’t already seen?” Well for one, it was a huge cult classic and so successful that it has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs! So, on this episode of Horror Revisited, we ask that you not sit too close to the tv,...
