John Ostrander: Woo Who!
This week fandom was set on its ear by the announcement of the newest person to play the Doctor on BBC’s venerable sci/fi TV show, Doctor Who. (If you don’t already know, the Doctor is a time-traveling alien with the ability to regenerate himself into an entirely new body and persona when his current body is on the point of dying.) There have been 12 such regenerations so far; Jodie Whittaker will be the 13th and the first woman to play the part. Joanna Lumley was a female Doctor for a sketch some years back – written by Steven Moffet, no less – but that is not considered canon.

Predictably, there has been some negative fan reaction, although the bulk that I have seen has been overwhelmingly positive. This kind of change often provokes this kind of reaction. When it was announced that the captain on the next Star Trek...

Kurt Russell at an event for Poséidon (2006)
Kurt Russell learned about the movie business from a very special person.

The actor got his start on a 10-year contract with the Walt Disney Company in the 1960s — and he has plenty of personal anecdotes about the man himself.

Russell appears in the latest issue of Disney Twenty-Three, which celebrates Disney legends. In it, the actor pens an essay recalling his days as a child actor on set and what he learned from the animation and movie pioneer.

“What I learned at Disney was how to make movies, and I learned that from Walt,” Russell says, adding that Disney spent personal time with him.

Chip Gaines is Happy with His Dad Bod
2017-05-18T06:56:24-07:00Chip Gaines is Happy with His Dad Bod

Chip Gaines is our new favorite body-positive role model.

“At any given moment, there’s a little voice in my head . . . that’s constantly telling me, “Way to go, Chip, that was so funny!’ and ‘Hey, Chip, you look good in that size medium T-shirt!’ A few times [it] has even told me my dad bod is ‘rockin.'” the Fixer Upper star writes of his strong sense of self confidence in the new summer issue of The Magnolia Journal.

But, he says, “folks just don’t seem to appreciate when I take my shirt off without having a good reason to do so.”

The TV contractor won’t be body-shamed, though. He goes on to credit his self-assured outlook as a reason for his success, and expresses his wish to share it with others who struggle to feel the same.

Archer Season 8 Episode 4 Review: Archer Dreamland: Ladyfingers
Well, Krieger definitely stole the show.

Archer Season 8 Episode 4 didn't do much to advance the main story about Woodhouse, or even about the criminal goings-on in Dreamland.

It did, however, give us a fantastic twist to Krieger's backstory.

The running myth/implication about Doctor Krieger is that he was something akin to the Boys from Brazil. This was a major plot point in Archer: Vice Season 5 Episode 10, when he met his clone brothers in San Marcos.

Archer: Dreamland, however, turns this on its head. In Dreamland, Krieger is actually a Jewish scientist who infiltrated the Nazi science division to sabotage their weapons programs.

Aaron Leibowitz, no less!! I love this so much!

We had every reason to believe that Dreamland Krieger had the same or a similar backstory as his real-world counterpart. We heard him speak German early on, and his connection to Len Trexler and penchant for crazy experiments was certainly classic Krieger.

‘Getaway Driver’ Hearkens Back to Hollywood’s Classic Car Chases
Short of the DayA high-octane short.

It just takes a momentary twist to make a good film great. Think about The Sixth Sense: until it’s final revelation that [Spoiler (?)] Bruce Willis has been dead the whole time, the most intriguing bit of that film was wondering how a mook like Willis got a doctorate in psychology. But then they drop that twist and oh shit, you got yourself a movie.

Getaway Driver, a short film directed by Abner Pastoll, is another example of this. What starts out as a cool, slick, high-octane short about a lady and her pug trying to escape a bad guy via a sweet ride becomes something else entirely in its final seconds, something I’m obviously not going to spoil here. As for that escape, Pastoll and director of photography Richard Bell have choreographed a thrilling, breakneck, nail-biter of a chase set in a parking garage that’s highly reminiscent — in...

New Ways to See Non-Fiction: How MoMA Doc Fortnight Brings a Fresh Perspective to Documentary Films
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) kicks off its 16th annual Doc Fortnight on Thursday, a 10-day festival that includes 20 feature-length non-fiction films and 10 documentary shorts. This year’s lineup includes four world premieres and a number of North American and U.S. premieres.

The festival is far from the only major North American showcase for non-fiction cinema. Festivals ranging from Hot Docs to True/False have played key roles in the expanding documentary festival circuit. However, Doc Fortnight has maintained its own niche on the scene, by aiming to expose undiscovered stories and filmmakers, screening a range of documentaries from around the world and capturing the ways in which artists are pushing the boundaries of non-fiction filmmaking.

“It’s not an industry festival, there aren’t awards, and distributors aren’t all coming looking to buy,...

If You Have to Visit Black Rock, This New Blu Is the Way to Go
Warner Archive Delivers the Best Way to Enjoy a Bad Day at Black Rock

Welcome to this week in home video! Click the title to buy a Blu-ray/DVD from Amazon and help support Fsr in the process!

Pick of the WeekBad Day at Black Rock [Warner Archive]

What is it? A one-armed man arrives via train in a remote western town, and the populace reacts with suspicion and violence.

Why buy it? Spencer Tracy excels as the polite but mysterious stranger whose presence sets everyone on edge, and the more he probes the harder they push. The film explores threads of America’s deep-seated racism and small-town insulation, and it pairs that commentary with a steadily increasing suspense. The themes and actions here are still sadly relevant, even now, and it makes for an important watch that still manages to entertain. Tracy’s potential adversaries include Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Walter Brennan, and...

Twinkle Khanna back in Bollywood: Mrs. Funnybones-Serious venture!
Mrs Funnybones has left no stone unturned with her ‘pun-intended’ flavour of expression. Twinkle Khanna’s recent comment on the Sc’s decision to play National Anthem in the theatres, gives major reality bites to the society. Well, that’s Twinkle Khanna for you! And, if you haven’t seen Twinkle Khanna’s Koffee with Karan Season 5 episode, you have missed out a better part of her sarcastic moves. Lucifer Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Homewrecker
Home is where the heart is, and it seems Lucifer's heart has found its home.

Did Lucifer come to L.A. looking for love? That seems to be the implication according to Dr. Martin on Lucifer Season 2 Episode 9, but Lucifer's avoidance of the truth may spell disaster for Chloe if Charlotte has her way.

While I thought it was a great cliffhanger to the next episode, I'm going to guess that somehow Maze or someone is going to stop Charlotte from pushing that button.

We all know that there's no way Chloe is going anywhere. Still, it was pretty intense, wasn't it?

I loved that Chloe was the one to save the day not once, but twice. She really is a true friend to Lucifer, and I'm getting the feeling that she's starting to have more than "just friends" feelings for her partner.

Lucifer's always had feelings for Chloe, though...

Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton for President: 37 Filmmakers Reveal Why She’s the Best Choice
Hillary Clinton
It came as no surprise in October that Michael Moore’s secret documentary “Michael Moore in Trumpland” was a pro-Hillary Clinton film urging Americans to vote for the democratic presidential nominee on November 8. Moore has been one of the most vocal and politically active filmmakers of his generation, if not the most active, and he felt that too much of the election conversation was dominated by negativity.

Read More: Michael Moore’s Plan to Show ‘TrumpLand’ to ‘Millions of People’ Before the Election

“I just thought, I’m going to do something here and give people positive reasons to think about voting for her,” Moore said at the film’s premiere in New York on October 18. “What the country doesn’t need is to be told that Trump is crazy, dangerous, a psychopath and sociopath. He has written and produced that movie, and it appears daily.”

While most filmmakers...

The Blacklist Season 4 Episode 3 Review: Miles McGrath
Mr. Kaplan is very much alive.

It seems that Red’s history with his former associate affected his normally accurate shot on The Blacklist Season 4 Episode 2. And rather than check to make sure she was truly dead, it looks like the thought of having to look at her after “killing” her must have been too much for him.

It’s definitely a major mistake that will come back to haunt Red and an interesting twist for the series.

A former friend turned enemy? Is there any other outcome after she recuperates?

View Slideshow: The Blacklist Photos from "Miles McGrath"

Thank goodness the answer of her fate wasn’t dragged out, and while a major reveal, it was a minor part of The Blacklist Season 4 Episode 3.

“Miles McGrath” was much more focused on Red’s hunt for Alexander Kirk, or Constantine. It was good to see the blacklister of the week...

Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
They may be on the small screen, but there’s nothing small about their paychecks: The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons and Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara top this year’s list of the highest-paid actors and actresses on TV.

The annual list, compiled by Forbes magazine, tracks earnings from June 2015 to June 2016 and adds in each actor’s endorsements along with their per-episode salaries. That explains why Vergara leads all TV actors, male or female, with a whopping $43 million, thanks to lucrative ad campaigns (like Head & Shoulders shampoo) and licensing deals. Parsons’ Big Bang co-star Kaley Cuoco lands in second place among actresses,...

2016 Emmy Winners: And the Awards Go To....
It was a night of firsts and sweeps.

Find out who won their first Emmys and what shows swept the awards, because we have every single winner from all three Emmy ceremonies below!

Jimmy Kimmel did an awesome job hosting, and even managed to point out all of the annoying gluten free stars in the audience after passing out Pb&J sandwiches his mom made. And he hoped nobody was allergic to nuts!

Congrats to all the winners. How many surprised you by the way things turned out? FX proved that there may be too much television to choose from, but what they're putting out there is of the great variety.

HBO offered up repeats with Game of Thrones and Veep, Keeping The Americans from a Best Drama win, but Rami Malek got the best actor win, even if we were also cheering heartily for Matthew Rhys. And our girl...

Here's How Your Favorite Pop Songs Might Be Tricking You Into Liking Them
Katy Perry at an event for Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012)
Your favorite pop songs might actually be controlling your mind. Kidding, but not. What sort of madness are we talking about? It turns out pop music might be trying to trick you into digging it. You know when a song transitions from lyrics into nonsense "whoa-oh-ooh-oh" chants? If you're a fan of Katy Perry's "California Girls," or Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City's "Good Time," you'll know what we're talking about. It's almost like filler to keep the song going, and it's everywhere. It turns out, those lyrics (if you can call them that) are called the Millennial Whoop and Quartz made a very intriguing video about the subject. Way to go millennials.  Do you actually...
