Osvaldo Golijov
Premiere of Eduardo Vilaro’s Buscando A Juan set to music by Osvaldo Golijov – Ballet Hispánico at New York City Center
Osvaldo Golijov
Ballet Hispánico, the nation’s largest Latine/x/Hispanic dance organization recognized as one of America’s Cultural Treasures, continues its 2023/24 season. A Company that “compels audiences to think differently and lean into an unseen, unimaginable cultural vibrancy” (Broadway World), Ballet Hispánico amplifies Latinx artists and cultures through innovative contemporary works.

In honor of Eduardo Vilaro’s 15th season as Artistic Director of Ballet Hispánico, the program will feature the World Premiere of Buscando a Juan. Vilaro’s new work, inspired by The Met’s exhibition of Juan de Pareja, Afro-Hispanic Painter, is a layered and immersive piece inspired by the life of Juan de Pareja, the Afro-Hispanic painter who was enslaved in Spanish painter Diego Velázquez’s studio for over two decades before becoming an artist in his own right. The work, set to music by Osvaldo Golijov, is a thought-provoking homage to the nuanced dance of shared vulnerability...

Elarica Johnson in P-Valley (2020)
P-Valley Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Pussyland
Elarica Johnson in P-Valley (2020)
As elsewhere, Rona cast an enormous shadow over Chucalissa.

That doesn't mean that those attached to The Pynk didn't get creative over the past two years, as illustrated on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 1.

After all, Uncle Clifford is the very picture of creativity.

Clifford came up with a clever way to re-envision The Pynk as Pussyland, a combination of car wash, wing joint, and shake shack, which the customer enjoyed from the safety of his vehicle.

The straying husband being treated to the whole Mercedes Experience was a genuinely psychedelic moment, showing the spirit of The Pynk remained alive.

Sure, Covid restrictions had closed down the Paradise Room, but this replacement turned the trick, considering the circumstances.

The pandemic had taken its toll on The Pynk's extended family.

Gidget, criminally underused on P-Valley Season 1, went home to care for her ailing mother.

Then there was Keyshawn, Miss Mississippi. She was banned...

Kevin Feige at an event for Thor : Le Monde des ténèbres (2013)
Marvel’s Kevin Feige Wants to Be More Hands-off With MCU Fantastic Four Movie
Kevin Feige at an event for Thor : Le Monde des ténèbres (2013)
For better or for worse, MCU boss Kevin Feige has a reputation for being very involved in the production of Marvel films. Feige’s tendency to oversee the plots of MCU installments and their aesthetic has allowed the franchise to achieve pop culture domination and build a cohesive cinematic universe, but it has also led to some sameness across films. Although directors such as James Gunn, Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, and Sam Raimi have been able to inject some individual personality into the films, movies such as Spider-Man: No Way Home feel to some as if they were directed by a committee.

But that might change with the Fantastic Four. Ever since No Way Home director Jon Watts stepped down from the project to work on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Feige has been hunting for a replacement. No news has been yet released regarding who will take on this highly anticipated Marvel picture,...

As Monaco Grand Prix Revs Up, Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali Talks U.S. Expansion And TV Future
George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Sergio Pérez in Formula 1 (1950)
Formula 1 is back on familiar turf this weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix, a glamour-wrapped race that has been a fixture since 1929.

While many of the track contours and Côte d’Azur vistas are little changed, the auto racing circuit itself has a decidedly revamped look. Earlier this month, it made a splashy debut in Miami, the latest stop in its U.S. expansion, which will take it to Las Vegas next year. That bow followed the arrival of the latest season of Netflix docu hit Drive to Survive, with the show adding pop-culture luster to negotiations for a potentially lucrative new U.S. media deal.

“The American market is ready for F1,” Formula One Group CEO Stefano Domenicali told Deadline in an interview ahead of today’s race. “Being ready means that we need to keep working on the fact that we need to stay connected with our fans in the U.

Note: This article contains major spoilers for “Stranger Things 4” Volume 1.

Already binged the first seven episodes of “Stranger Things” Season 4 Part 1? Not to worry: As we count down the days (35 to be exact) between Volume 1 and Volume 2’s release, viewers are in for a treat in the form of a 30-second-long teaser trailer for the second installment, which they can watch after completing Part 1. But it’s not exactly easy to find.

A sort of post-credits scene, the clip comes after Netflix’s dubbing information and previews automatically for watchers, taking you to a different screen entirely rather than playing as part of the episode’s runtime.

Final ‘Stranger Things 4’ Volume 1 Trailer Goes Even Deeper Into the Upside Down (Video)
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Ahead of Friday’s debut of “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 1, Netflix has unveiled one last trailer for the long-awaited new season. And fans of the Upside Down will be pleased.

“Don’t try to be heroes. There is no shame in running,” voiceover begins as the trailer shows visuals of the series’ main characters doing the exact opposite of that. Hopper is in a Russian prison fighting for his life, while the kids are seen in various displays of preparing for battle — including inside the Upside Down.

Indeed, the most striking shot of the trailer transitions from one set of characters riding bikes in Hawkins to another set of characters riding bikes in the Upside Down, promising a substantial trip to the otherworldly dimension that has been the source of so many headaches for the show’s main characters.

Pablo Schreiber in Halo (2022)
Halo Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Transcendence
Pablo Schreiber in Halo (2022)
Wrapping up a season in a satisfying fashion is difficult, but Halo Season 1 Episode 9 was a decent attempt at laying the groundwork for the future.

We'll start with the Makee of it all.

Makee has been a tricky character to read throughout Halo Season 1, largely due to her association with the Covenant.

She had clearly been questioning who was best to be loyal to after years of being told the ways of the world and of course, her own experience all those years ago.

Could she have carved out a life on Reach, or perhaps a more significant life in this mystical realm?

The writers did an excellent job of making me care for someone who could have been a ruthless villain.

There were hints that Makee could work with humans for the greater good.

Her connection to John was clearly still strong, despite everything that happened between them.

The Orville: New Horizons - Hulu Drops Exciting Trailer Ahead of June 2 Premiere
Scott Grimes, Penny Johnson Jerald, Seth MacFarlane, Peter Macon, Adrianne Palicki, J. Lee, Mark Jackson, and Halston Sage in The Orville (2017)
On a day where some networks are cleaning house and axing shows, the light of hope is held high by streamers like Hulu that have swooped to the rescue in the past.

Case in point: when Fox and The Orville parted ways in 2019, Hulu picked up the popular homage to Star Trek.

It has been an incredibly long wait for the third season, but it's nearly over. The show is now rebranded The Orville: New Horizons, and with the premiere on June 2, Hulu's dropped a hot new trailer.

It's a monster tease at the new season, with Krill and Kaylon and Yaphit, oh my!

With Norm Macdonald passing last September, there may be some teary eyes when our favorite blob engineer makes his return on-screen.

Macdonald voiced Yaphit throughout the two seasons on Fox and his work on Season 3 is one of the last projects he worked on before his death.

Sur ordre de Dieu (2022)
Under the Banner of Heaven Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Church and State
Sur ordre de Dieu (2022)
It's starting to feel like a disjointed puzzle with too many pieces.

Under the Banner of Heaven Season 1 Episode 4 is, unfortunately, feeling the crushing weight of its source material.

While there was a lot of information, the plot (such as it is) moved slowly as we learned more about Ron and Dan Lafferty.

Non-fiction crime can be challenging to adapt. When it's done right, everything feels organic and seamless.

There is a delicate balance of how much information from the original case (and book) to include and how to distill it down to its essential elements to make it an engaging story.

There is so much information in this adaptation and occasionally it feels clunky in how it is presented to the viewer.

Material must be adapted for the medium. It feels very much like reading a book, but it should feel like watching a television show.

Some of the...

Halo Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Inheritance
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Amy Adams in The Master (2012)
An hour without Master Chief front and center was always going to face an uphill battle.

For a series built on Master Chief, there was a severe lack of our superpowered hero on Halo Season 1 Episode 7.

Kwan's journey throughout Halo Season 1 has been tedious, to say the least.

Her storyline has been so far away from everything else going on that it almost feels like it belongs in a different series.

The deep dive into Kwan's past was fun because it finally lifted the lid on how she was when we met her on Halo Season 1 Episode 1.

She's young, she makes mistakes, but she wants revenge on those who killed everyone she knows most of all.

It was never going to be easy for her, but thankfully, the events of "Inheritance" gave her the time to stand on her own two feet, and while it wasn't the best episode,...

Halo Exclusive Sneak Peek: Kwan's Quest for Revenge Continues
Pablo Schreiber in Halo (2022)
Kwan's quest for revenge has put her in some dangerous scenarios throughout Halo Season 1.

On Halo Season 1 Episode 7, titled "Inheritance," Kwan’s journey to uncover her family’s “true purpose” takes her deep into the deserts of Madrigal.

TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at what is sure to be a big installment for Kwan.

We've witnessed the youngster go through several harrowing encounters throughout the initial episodes of the series, and hopefully, she'll get the answers she requires.

Unfortunately, the beginning of the clip makes it look like Kwan is a prisoner.

Her aim will be to get all of the answers and prepare for the fight ahead.

Kwan obviously wants revenge, but a big part of her mission will be to learn the true extent of her father's connection to the people deep in the desert.

We also know that Vishner wants Kwan dead, making things considerably more cutthroat.

Pablo Schreiber in Halo (2022)
Halo Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Solace
Pablo Schreiber in Halo (2022)
That's how you tell a story!

Halo Season 1 Episode 6 traded in the grueling battles and filled viewers in on what is really going on, and it resulted in a nuanced outing that proved the series doesn't need things blowing up to advance the story.

The theme that echoed through "Solace" was fail-safes and how there had to be a way to fix things that go wrong.

John was falling apart throughout the hour, with Pablo Schrieber turning in an unforgettable performance as this man who is questioning everything.

The mystery surrounding the artifacts, John's past, and Halsey's motives have been the main driving force throughout the first two-thirds of Halo Season 1.

The Covenant handing Makee over was a ballsy move on Halo Season 1 Episode 5, but knowing she's deeply tethered to Master Chief makes things considerably more enjoyable.

Makee has been vocal about taking down the "alien," but the truth is,...

Bridgerton Breaks Own Record as Season 2 Becomes Netflix's Most-Watched English-Language Show Ever
Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton in La chronique des Bridgerton (2020)
There's no stopping Bridgerton's impressive reign at Netflix.

The streaming service announced Tuesday that the Regency era drama that focuses on a new love story every season has broke broken its own record.

Bridgerton Season 2, which launched in March, has soared even higher than Bridgerton Season 1.

It racked up 627.11 million hours viewed throughout the first 28 days on the streamer to become the most-watched English-language show.

Bridgerton Season 1 settles for second place with 625.49 million hours viewed during the same time period.

Netflix typically makes a decision on the future of a series after assessing its performance in that first month, with some making the cut for new seasons, and others being cut short.

Fans of Bridgerton will be well aware that Netflix quickly ordered a second season, followed by a third and fourth, as well as a Queen Charlotte spinoff.

Bridgerton Season 2 this week scooped up 66.61 million hours viewed, appearing in the top 10 in 88 countries.

Joseph Sikora in Power Book IV: Force (2022)
Power Book IV: Force Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Family Business
Joseph Sikora in Power Book IV: Force (2022)
That was one hell of an hour.

Power Book IV: Force Season 1 Episode 10 was a more subdued finale. Sure, there were gunfights and death, but it was quiet overall. We didn't leave the season on a cliffhanger, really. Instead, we got Tommy ending the season the way he began it, ready to take over Chicago.

But that's what made the finale so great. Every scene was impactful, and every shot had a purpose. It's precisely the kind of lasting impression you want to leave an audience with as they anticipate what's to come next.

Before getting into the stories, let me just say first that this hour is visually stunning. It's shot beautifully and feels more like a mini-film than an episode of television. And it gives the hour a bit of a different feel than the rest of Power Book IV: Force Season 1.

But I mean that in the best possible way.

Severance Season 1 Episode 9 Review: The We We Are
Adam Scott in Severance (2022)
Though it may not feel like it, Severance Season 1 Episode 9 was the most satisfying episode so far.

The Innies achieved their primary goal and learned a lot of information that will shape their future. Whether they will be allowed a future remains to be seen.

We are still left with many questions, but the advances in the action were significant.

It took a long time to get to this point. Admittedly, what the Innies achieved is likely something no other Innies have achieved until now.

Dan Erickson, the creator of the series, wrote this episode, and it shows the care he has for his characters as they all had moments of catharsis and discovery.

If you'd have told me after watching Severance Season 1 Episode 1 that the season finale would be filled with edge-of-your-seat suspense, I wouldn't have believed you, but here we are. After so many episodes of walking slowly down these halls,...

Pablo Schreiber in Halo (2022)
Halo Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Unbound
Pablo Schreiber in Halo (2022)
Now, that's how you follow up a premiere.

Halo Season 1 Episode 2 had the right amount of action, moving pieces, and world-building to reiterate that the TV adaptation has the legs to carry the franchise to new heights.

The desperate mission to Rubble was an excellent way to bring more humanity to John.

While Halo Season 1 Episode 1 highlighted there was more going on behind his eyes than we were being led to believe, "Unbound" stressed that his kindness seems deeply tied to his past.

Giving Soren that head start all those years ago was a key development because it gave John and Kwan somewhere to hide out temporarily.

Soren clearly understood there was something amiss about the Spartan program and didn't want to lose the memories that we've witnessed return to John.

There are many questions surrounding Soren's survival, but he certainly seemed trustworthy enough to look after Kwan.

Lux Vide Chief Luca Bernabei on Why Italy’s Medical Show ‘Doc’ Is a Global Hit
Image
Italy’s Lux Vide, the production company behind “Medici” and financial thriller “Devils,” is now scoring a global hit with its medical procedural “Doc,” the second season of which had its French launch at the Series Mania fest.

“Doc,” which turns on a prominent physician who, following a head injury, suffers a permanent partial memory loss but still finds a new way to practice his profession, has been sold as a ready made to a slew of territories, including Australia, Canada, Venezuela, the Netherlands and Nigeria. The Italian version has already aired in France (TF1), Australia (Sbs), Spain (Axn) and Portugal (Axn), while a local adaptation played in the Czech Republic.

The “Doc” format, as previously reported, has been sold by Lux Vide to Sony Pictures Television for global distribution. And Spt Studios is developing a U.S. adaptation of the show.

In Italy, the final episode of “Doc” Season...

‘Wheel Of Fortune’: Bellamie Blackstone Named Exec Producer Following Mike Richards Departure
Image
Wheel of Fortune has found its new boss.

Bellamie Blackstone has been named exec producer of the long-running gameshow as it heads into its 40th season.

Separately, longtime supervising producer Steve Schwartz has been promoted to co-exec producer.

This comes after Wheel of Fortune was caught in the crossfire of last year’s Jeopardy! turmoil when Mike Richards, who was exec producer of both shows, was forced to step down.

Schwartz stepped up to oversee the production of the show’s 39th season.

It also comes after host Pat Sajak and co-host Vanna White signed up to continue on the show through the 2023/24 season. Production will wrap on the 39th season later this month with new episodes airing through June.

Blackstone recently served as exec producer of Netflix’s Nicholas Cage hosted History of Swear Words as well as Kids Say the Darndest Things and Hulu’s I Love You, America with Sarah Silverman.

Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and Ed Speleers in Star Trek: Picard (2020)
One key element to Star Trek: Picard Season 1's appeal is its elegant entwining of familiarity and innovation. Classic characters in new adventures. It's the chef's kiss of fan service.

On its cast, they personify the marriage of nostalgia and novelty in the characters of Seven of Nine and Raffaela Musiker (aka Raffi), respectively, as the two form a bond near the end of Season 1.

Speaking with TV Fanatic and other press agencies on a Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Press Day, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd spill on the magic of their relationship and the importance of holding up a mirror to contemporary issues.

As Star Trek: Picard Season 1 drew to a close, we glimpsed a quiet, intimate moment between Raffi and Seven onboard La Sirena.

In the period between Season 1 and 2, Hurd and Ryan worked together again as Raffi and Seven on an audio drama, Star Trek: No Man's Land,...

The Music of ‘Turning Red’ Is an All-Star Affair Featuring Billie Eilish, Finneas and Ludwig Goransson
Image
“Turning Red,” Pixar’s latest animated adventure, posed some pretty big musical challenges: it’s about a 13-year-old girl, obsessed with a boy band, whose Chinese ancestry literally looms large as she turns into a giant panda when her emotions spin out of control.

It demanded a trio of world-class talents: Grammy winners Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for the songs and Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner Ludwig Göransson to compose the score.

That such high-profile talents were available and eager to contribute to “Turning Red” says a lot about the music-friendly reputation of Pixar, which has won five music Oscars (including last year’s “Soul”) and 11 more nominations for either song or score since the original “Toy Story” in 1995.

Tom MacDougall, president of Walt Disney Music, conferred with director Domee Shi — whose personal coming-of-age, mother-daughter conflict story inspired “Turning Red” — and reached out to all of them in 2019, before production on the film began.

Snowfall's Christine Horn Breaks Down Black Diamond and Dallas' Tension with Louie and Jerome, Expanded Roles

Snowfall director Damian Marcano wanted to show another side of strippers-turned-assassins Black Diamond and Dallas, so he explored them through motherhood.

The end result was an awkward-but-comical interaction in last week’s Episode 3 between the pair and Louie and Jerome, as Black Diamond and Dallas dropped off their children at elementary school. Louie told the women, who now work for Franklin, she would and could forgive them for nearly killing her if they used their exotic dancer connections to plant seeds of usurpation in Mello’s head.

International Disruptors: Netflix Italian Originals Chief Eleonora Andreatta Talks Strength Of Italian IP & Why “Specific & Authentic” Content Is Key
Image
Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to Netflix VP of Italian Originals Eleonora “Tinny” Andreatta. The veteran exec was pivotal in bringing shows such as My Brilliant Friend to audiences during her 25-year career at public service broadcaster Rai and here she speaks to Deadline about the local and global strategy for her newest role.

When Netflix hired former Rai director Eleonora Andreatta in 2020 as vice president of Italian Original series, it was a monumental coup for the mega-streamer and a clear sign that the company was taking its presence in Italy very seriously.

Andreatta was seen as the most influential commissioning editor in Italy. Her distinguished 25-year career at public service broadcaster Rai saw her deliver around 500 hours of TV drama per year across its three main...

The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Irresistible Change
Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Cynthia Nixon, Louisa Jacobson, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, and Denée Benton in The Gilded Age (2022)
Another historical figure, another historical event!

The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 7 meandered slightly, which is unsurprising considering its many characters and plotlines.

It was like the calm before the storm -- a lull that ended with a bang and hinted at fireworks yet to come.

Ever the risk-takers, Mr. Raikes and Marian met at Mrs. Chamberlain's to discuss their future. He's assuming she loves him, though she's never actually said it, and she didn't accept his proposal.

I need to see your face at regular intervals to keep me on the straight and narrow.

Mr. Tom Raikes Permalink: I need to see your face at regular intervals to keep me on the straight and narrow. Added: March 05, 2022

A kiss doesn't mean yes. Though Marian may love Mr. Raikes, she is likely reluctant to jump in with both feet because Aunt Agnes has gotten to her. What's more, it's starting to...

Severance Season 1 Episode 4 Review: The You You Are
Adam Scott in Severance (2022)
Did you think Severance couldn’t get any bleaker?

Severance Season 1 Episode 4 marks the darkest turn yet in an already grim series.

Will things get better for the Lumon Innies, or could it possibly get worse?

It’s called the break room because that’s where they break you.

In an act of psychological torture, Helly read the compunction statement over a thousand times. But how can she mean it when she doesn’t even know what it means?

Helly heard a muffled angry voice, but Dylan mentioned that he heard a baby cry during his break room stint.

Could these voices be the people Petey mentioned in Severance Season 1 Episode 3, who exist in an undiscovered department? Or is that the hidden room behind Optics and Design (which we’ll get to later)?

Helly got creative coming up with new ways to get through to her Outie.

We...

The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Heads Have Rolled For Less
Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Cynthia Nixon, Louisa Jacobson, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, and Denée Benton in The Gilded Age (2022)
That was undoubtedly a luncheon to remember!

If The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 6 (and indeed the entire series) is trying to make a point, it is probably that rich people have far more money than sense.

Trouble is brewing in paradise, with deeply-felt betrayals and warnings that may or may not be headed.

After so much affection between the two, Mr. Russell finally lost his temper with Mrs. Russell.

She is indeed very single-minded — her ambition is getting in the way of her basic human emotions, like sympathy. Mr. Russell must be the one to tell her so, as she does respect his opinion, but her warning to him about being "soft" was chilling.

How much is she truly capable of, this woman who wants so much for herself and her family it threatens to push those she loves further away?

We’re not arranging a debutante ball, Mrs.

F1 Cancels Russian Grand Prix, Which Had Most-Watched Race Ever Last Year on ESPN
+1 (2013)
Formula One (F1) has scrapped the 2022 Russian Grand Prix following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine. The race was supposed to run on Sept. 25. Disney/ABC Sports had not yet selected which network the Russian Grand Prix would run on: ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, a person with knowledge of the plans told TheWrap. The past few years, the Russian Grand Prix has aired on ESPN2 — and last year, it was the most-watched Russian Grand Prix ever. ESPN does not have a role in the scheduling or locations of F1 events, the person told us. That is all Formula One. The 2021 Formula 1 season was the most-watched ever on American television. The 2021 Grand Prix of Russia on ESPN2 averaged 833,000 viewers, which was up 58% from the 2020 version. Last year’s No. 1 race, the Monaco Grand Prix, averaged 969,000 viewers on ESPN2 — the cable channel’s most-watched F1 race ever. The race that ended the 2021 season — Abu Dhabi,...

Reba McEntire, Jensen Ackles, Katheryn Winnick, and Kylie Bunbury in Big Sky (2020)
Big Sky Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Trust Issues
Reba McEntire, Jensen Ackles, Katheryn Winnick, and Kylie Bunbury in Big Sky (2020)
Why is Ronald Pergman still alive?

I ask that question with total sincerity because, at this point, it's making absolutely no sense. Ronald isn't an interesting character. He's not a terribly complex bad guy, and the whole experiment at the ranch has been a complete dud. So, I ask again, why is he alive?

Big Sky Season 2 Episode 9 saw death but not the one the show desperately needs.

Deciding to carry Ronald and Scarlet into Big Sky Season 2 was always a curious decision because this show is at its best when it focuses on one case. Before the whole family died, the Kleinsasser storyline in Big Sky Season 1 was a good mystery for a while. It was compelling and didn't overstay its welcome.

And the show would do well to have perhaps two cases per season, one in the front half and one in the back half, with some side plots thrown in.
