Image
The new releases this weekend are indie with Honey, Don’t!, Relay and Eden flanked by Splitsville, Lurker and Pools in limited release and set to to expand in coming weeks. Neon’s Cannes-premiering Splitsville had the highest PSA of the weekend. Utopia’s Pools filled the Music Box’s 700-seat main auditorium on Friday. Lurker from Mubi, the best reviewed opening of the weekend, had sold out evening screenings and strong word of mouth.

Relationship comedy Splitsville is eyeing a nice $105.6k limited opening at five theaters in New York and LA for a per screen average of $21k. It’s directed by Michael Angelo Covino from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kyle Marvin. The duo behind The Climb (2019) also star with Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona.

When Ashley (Arjona) asks for a divorce, the good-natured Carey (Marvin) runs to his friends Julie (Johnson) and Paul (Covino), for support. Carey...

A Will Smith Sci-Fi Movie Originally Had An Agatha Christie Vibe
Image
Will Smith's experiences in the science fiction genre are a bit of a roller coaster, but most movie-goers would agree that the highs of his career feel nothing short of exhilarating when you encounter them for the first time. Yes, you might have to go through an "After Earth" in his catalogue to get there, but you're rewarded with titles like "I Am Legend" for your troubles. One of the more highly-regarded entries in the Smith filmography is "I, Robot," and the beloved Isaac Asimov riff was originally going to be an Agatha Christie-tinged mystery. But Walt Disney Pictures wanted some changes after acquiring the project, which might have ended up working out for the creative team, judging by that massive $353 million box office return for "I, Robot."

"I, Robot" is a 2004 sci-fi movie starring Will Smith as detective Del Spooner, and it's reminiscent of so many other...

Listen: David Byrne Releases New Track 'The Avant Garde'
Image
David Byrne, Tony Award-winning creator of Broadway's American Utopia and Here Lies Love, has released The Avant Garde, the latest offering from his forthcoming album Who Is The Sky?, out September 5 through Matador Records. The song wrestles with the merits of art for art’s sake. The follow-up to Byrne’s acclaimed 2018 album American Utopia, which was later adapted into a hit Broadway musical and HBO film, Who Is the Sky? will be released Sept. 5 through Matador Records. It was produced by the Grammy-winning Kid Harpoon, while its 12 songs were arranged by the members of New York-based chamber ensemble...

David Byrne Ponders “The Avant Garde” on New Song: Stream
Image
David Byrne has revealed his new song, “The Avant Garde,” the third preview of his upcoming album, Who Is the Sky? Stream it below.

Produced by Grammy winner Kid Harpoon with arrangement from New York-based chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra, the track takes on the idea of whether one should create art for art’s sake, with lyrics like: “It’s a passionate life, it’s ahead of the curve/ It’s deceptively weighty, profoundly absurd/ Well, it’s whatever fits/ It’s the avant garde.”

Get David Byrne Tickets Here

“Some people will hear this and say, ‘David is calling bullshit on his friends’ but it’s more nuanced than that,” Byrne said in a statement about the song. “Anyone who knows me knows that I go to plenty of shows that might be classified as avant-garde or experimental. Edgy and untraditional work is hugely inspiring to me, as...

David Byrne: ‘Am I Ever Going to Get Any of This Figured Out?’
Image
David Byrne strolls into his downtown Manhattan office around noon and promptly removes all of his footwear. He’s been in this prewar building only for a few months, but it’s already unmistakably his own, looking as much like a work space as it does like a museum of the unusual items he’s collected throughout his decades as one of pop’s most curious minds. Meticulously organized metal shelving lines one long wall full of music books, art books, history books, and enough DVDs to put the Criterion Closet to shame.

New to Streaming: 28 Years Later, Michael Roemer, Hot Milk, Killer Films at 30 & More
Image
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

28 Years Later (Danny Boyle)

Armed with a bevy of iPhones, 28 Years Later is definitely an “I’ve still got the moves” gesture from Boyle. It’s a case where his frenetic energy, paired with returning writer Alex Garland’s structurally odd screenplay, creates a film that one never feels a step ahead of––a deep compliment for something about to be unleashed on multiplexes. Even if that doesn’t necessarily result in a great film, per se. – Ethan V. (full review)

Where to Stream: VOD

Celebrating Michael Roemer

Although he passed just a few months ago, Michael Roemer was thankfully alive to see much of his work restored and embraced. The director’s stellar features are now available to stream on the Criterion Channel,...

Francis Ford Coppola wants to have fun while making his undeniably strange Megalopolis film in the Megadoc teaser trailer
Image
When you’re a legendary filmmaker like Francis Ford Coppola, there are few things left to do in the industry after creating ground-breaking cinema, earning top-tier awards, and working alongside the biggest names in the business. However, what about returning to why you got involved in filmmaking? Imagine making a movie for fun! It’s a wild concept in today’s film market that thrives on competition, trend-chasing, and merchandising tie-ins. In Utopia‘s Megadoc teaser trailer, Francis Ford Coppola takes us into the heart of his self-financed flop Megalopolis, and the filmmaker is as unapologetic as ever about his choices. I love that for him.

Here’s the official synopsis for Megadoc:

“A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, Megalopolis. The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material,...

Why Do Inventors Disappear? 5 Conspiracy Thrillers to Watch After the Julian Brown Case
Image
Julian Brown’s recent disappearance has had conspiracy theorists very curious. He was previously known for creating Plastoline, which he claims is able to turn recycled plastic into gasoline. However, the popularity he has gained now is more ominous. The inventor posted a suspicious video on 9th July on Instagram, claiming that he was “under attack,” warning his viewers to be careful and be on the lookout for him.

Alright, listen, everybody. I can’t go into too much detail, but there is some very, very odd stuff going on. I’m certainly under attack right now in many different ways…I’m still building – nothing is going to stop that. But I’m just telling you guys right now, be on the lookout because I’m under attack.

To add more mystery to the situation, Brown has not posted anything since then, causing many to believe that something bad has happened to him.

Alex Garland’s 82% Rated Show Starring Nick Offerman Was Way Ahead of ‘Severance’
Image
Alex Garland explored tech dystopia and workplace horror way before Apple TV+’s Severance with the Hulu show Devs. Garland, who directed the sci-fi thrillers Ex Machina and Annihilation before this and recently directed the political thrillers Civil War and Warfare, explored tech dystopia and existentialism with the show.

While Severance showcased the cult-like manipulation of its workers by corporations, Devs delved much deeper into a similar setup, venturing into a far more metaphysical realm than the Apple TV+ show. Similar to Adam Scott’s Mark going on a spiral to find his spouse, Devs also goes on a similar trajectory, except the mystery is just the first spiral.

Even as a writer, Alex Garland used his sci-fi concepts to explore deeper questions about human nature and the dangers of technocracy. From the space...

'Top Gun' and 'South Park' Get Overtaken by Adam Woodward's Forgotten Action-Thriller on Streaming
Image
Man With No Pastis a straight-to-streaming thriller that stars Adam Woodward, Jon Voight, and Marton Csokas. It was originally released in January 2025 and didn’t get much attention at the time. But now, completely out of nowhere, it has surged to the top of the Paramount+ charts. It’s currently the #1 movie in 18 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru. Even more surprising, it’s beating major titles like Top Gun: Maverick, Gladiator II, and South Park.

This rise is especially surprising given the timing. Director Joseph Kosinski’s new film, F1,just hit theaters and has been getting plenty of critical acclaim. Naturally, this has led to a spike in Top Gun: Maverick rewatch value on Paramount+. But instead of Kosinski’s legacy sequel taking the top spot, Man With No Past has somehow overtaken it. The film is directed by James Bamford, who’s previously directed episodes of Supergirl,...

Travis Scott Says Kanye West Gave Permission to Use Demo in Motion to Dismiss ‘Telekinesis’ Suit
Image
Travis Scott, Sza, and Future have filed a motion to dismiss a copyright case over their song “Telekinesis,” claiming the song they are accused of ripping off was actually given to them, with permission, by Kanye West.

On Monday, June 14, lawyers for the three artists filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit brought by gospel artist Victory Boyd. Boyd alleged back in January that Scott, Sza, and Future “intentionally and willfully copied” her 2019 song “Like the Way It Sounds” without her permission.

In Boyd’s own claim, she acknowledged that...

Will Justin Bieber Land a No. 1 Debut With ‘Swag?’
Image
Justin Bieber’s Swag, the superstar’s first album in over four years, is on track for a solid opening week as the album is taking over the daily charts on Spotify and Apple Music this weekend.

Sources familiar with the matter tell The Hollywood Reporter that the projections for the album — his seventh full-length — are estimated at about 150,000 to 160,000 album equivalent units for week one, while Hits magazine is projecting 175,000 units.

Those estimates would yield a respectable debut, particularly given that Swag’s week one numbers likely won’t include any physical sales. Justice, Bieber’s next-most-recent album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart back in 2021 with 154,000 equivalent units, including 30,000 physical sales.

Current estimates could also keep Bieber competitive for a No. 1 debut on Billboard’s 200 Albums chart, where Morgan Wallen has dominated the past two months; the country singer is projected to move more than 150,000 units this week.

Björk Announces Physical Release of Cornucopia Concert Film
Image
Björk has announced the physical release of her concert film Cornucopia, which will be available as a live album, DVD, or Blu-ray on October 25th.

Cornucopia: Live captures Björk’s performance at the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Portugal, on September 1st, 2023, during her tour of the same name. Available formats include 3xLP vinyl, 2xCD, 2xCD + DVD, DVD, and Blu-ray. Pre-orders are ongoing.

“I am so thrilled to share the film for my concert Cornucopia with you,” Björk said in a statement. “This has been a long journey with hundreds of people helping. I am so beyond enormously grateful to every single one of them. Travis Scott Reveals Sunday Release Date for ‘Jackboys 2’
Image
Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records compilation album JackBoys 2 is set to release this Sunday, July 13, the rapper revealed on social media Thursday night.

“The Jack is back with 17 tracks full of trunk rattling classics in the making,” the album’s promo art online reads. According to the promo art, Bun B is hosting the project, which is set to release at midnight Sunday. Several different physical and digital variants are currently listed for sale on Scott’s website.

The album will drop days after Scott and JackBoys dropped the single “2000 Excursion” featuring Don Toliver and Sheck Wes.

Hot Spring Shark Attack Review: Japanese Horror Comedy is A Zany Live-Action Cartoon
Hotspring Sharkattack (2024)
Sharks have come a long way in the last 50 years. Back in my day, a person would have to be swimming in the ocean to get eaten up by a shark but those days are no more! In Morihito Inoue’s goofy gory Hot Spring Shark Attack, nothing can stop these aquatic killing machines. Fresh water, salt water, plumbing pipes, pavement(!) – the sharks in Hot Spring Shark Attack can swim, squirm, and conjure their way through literally anything. And they only thing stopping them from chomping their way through the entire city is a dedicated marine biologist, an out-of-his-depth mayor, a mysterious semi-superhero muscleman, and a grizzled street cop who shoots the words “No Swimming” into the beach sand...

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you’re a hip hop fan of a certain age, the news that a new Clipse album is on the way is about as exciting as it gets.

But if Travis Scott was looking forward to the duo’s first studio release in 16 years, he’s probably feeling less enthused after hearing the second single from Let God Sort ‘Em Out.

Along with his baby mama, Kylie Jenner, Travis found himself unexpectedly called out on the track “So Be It,” which dropped on Tuesday.

Jeremy Clarkson (who also presents Amazon hit Clarkson’s Farm) was asking the questions as contestant Nicholas Bennett breezed through the early rounds of his challenge and found himself in possession of two lifelines as he faced his final £1million question.

He had already guaranteed to go home with £125,000, but decided to lay it all on the line as he faced the question:

“Which of these words, each coined by a famous writer, was derived from the title of a fairytale about three princes: Pandamonium, Serendipity, Utopia or Yahoo?”

Bennett used his first lifeline to ask the host, but Clarkson admitted he had no idea, saying: “I can’t think of a fairytale that’s about three princes.”

The contestant then phoned a friend,...

Image
Exclusive: A sought after drama project from The Loudest Voice co-creator Alex Metcalf has landed at HBO for development. Titled Baby Queen, it is based on the upcoming debut novel of the same name by southern crime fiction writer Ty Landers. The book became a hot commodity; its rights sparked a 10-way bidding war won by Michael Ellenberg’s Media Res (The Morning Show) which set up the project at HBO with Jessica Rhoades’ Pacesetter Productions (Black Mirror) also producing.

Written by Metcalf based on Landers’ novel, Baby Queen centers on Natalie Link who returns home to take over her family’s honey business — but when a body is discovered on the property, three generations of women are forced to confront the secrets, betrayals, and buried crimes that haunt their Southern legacy.

The novel is set in Landers’ home state of Alabama.

All We Know About David Fincher’s ‘Squid Game’ Spin-Off So Far
Image
David Fincher doesn’t just direct—he dissects. Whether he’s jumping deep into the twisted world of serial killers or getting into the minds of social media moguls, his work always feels precise. You will find his works are chilly, and somehow very hypnotic. So when rumors started swirling that the genius behind movies like Se7en and Fight Club might be working on a Squid Game spin-off, fans couldn’t help but lose their minds with excitement.

Between its green or pink tracksuits, unnerving masked guards, and twisted takes on childhood games, it became a cultural obsession overnight. The show didn’t just climb the Netflix charts—it devoured them. With its haunting take on capitalism, desperation, and the raw will to survive, it touched a global nerve. And now that...

RadicalMedia Heads Talk Cannes, Bono and Bringing Stage Musicals to the Big Screen
Image
From Rent to Hamilton, RadicalMedia has a long history of bringing Broadway’s most famous stage hits to the big screen. Next up, the company is transporting New York’s Beacon Theatre to the Croisette, with Bono in tow.

Bono: Stories of Surrender, based on the U2 singer’s one-man show, Surrender: An Evening of Words, (itself inspired by his memoir Surrender: 40 Songs), is getting a special screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The doc, which is set to hit Apple TV+ shortly after its festival debut, is directed by Andrew Dominik (Blonde) and sees Bono discuss his career, family and activism while also performing U2’s iconic songs.

“This is probably the most autobiographical film and it is very much faithful to Bono’s story,” says RadicalMedia founder and CEO Jon Kamen.

Outside of the theater, Radical’s nonfiction work largely revolves around music. The company has...

Utopia Acquires ‘Megadoc’ On Making Of Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’
Image
Utopia has acquired North American rights to Megadoc, a new documentary on the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Megalopolis, which premiered a year ago at Cannes before going on to a nationwide theatrical release via Lionsgate.

The doc, from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas), will be released in theaters this fall.

The making-of project emerged from a chance encounter, sparked by an email between two old friends, with Coppola inviting Figgis to the Megalopolis set in the lead-up to the first day of principal photography and granting him permission to document whatever he wished. Armed with a small camera and crew throughout the entire shoot, Figgis’ unrestricted access to the production gave way to Megadoc, a unique look into the creative process of one of the most revered directors of all time, and behind the curtain of the most ambitious film of his career.

“Francis gave me access to everything,...

Megadoc | Making of documentary to go behind-the-scenes of Megalopolis
Mike Figgis in Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
Documentarian Mike Figgis was offered total access to Francis Ford Coppola’s set and archive for a Megalopolis doc. The results could be interesting.

Oscar-winning documentary maker Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) has made “a secret fly-on-the-wall making-of doc” about Francis Ford Coppola’s infamous passion project, Megalopolis, Variety reports.

The film certainly sounds like it’s earned the interest. Over what we’ll euphemistically describe as an “eventful” production and release cycle, the Godfather trilogy director’s $120m sci-fi epic spawned accusations of on-set misconduct, Coppola out of his depth, and Adam Driver on damage control.

This, in turn, spawned a bizarre editorial tit-for-tat between Hollywood trade stalwarts Variety and Deadline (in which the latter accused its Penske Media Corporation stablemate of publishing “pseudo-salacious” rumours “for clicks”), a disastrous industry screening and a Cannes debut which turned “mixed reviews” into an artform. That’s before the film arrived in...

David Fincher and Netflix Reportedly Clash Over Title of Squid Game American Spin-Off
Image
Rumors about the American spin-off of Squid Game first surfaced in October 2024, with reports indicating that David Fincher has been working on the project since 2021. The series is reportedly being written by Dennis Kelly, the creator of the show Utopia.

However, Netflix has not officially confirmed the spin-off. In fact, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos dismissed it as merely a rumor. He may be holding off on any announcements to avoid drawing attention away from the main series, which recently released its second season.

Another possible reason for the silence could be that Netflix doesn’t want to overwhelm audiences, especially since a Squid Game reality show is already in the works.

If the spin-off does move forward, it might either be a direct remake of the original series set in an American context or a new story set within the same universe. Until Netflix provides more details, the project’s future remains uncertain.

Björk on Her New Concert Movie, ‘Cornucopia,’ and Creating an Immersive Sci-Fi Universe on Stage and on Film: ‘I Want Optimistic Goth’
Image
In talking about her new concert movie, “Björk: Cornucopia,” the movie’s namesake mentions the way the performance in the film wraps up, and the finally hopeful message she wanted to get across with it.

She says the ending of the movie has “Love will save us from death” as its climactic message, “which I highly believe in. It is a strange reply to the goths of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart.’ I want optimistic goth,” she declares. For emphasis, she cheekily adds: “Albino goth is what I am going for here.”

Getting to that uplifting ending on stage was a typically mind-blowing experience, as recaptured in “Björk: Cornucopia,” the magical-reality concert film documenting her five-year-long tour that opens in cinemas worldwide today. (Tickets and theater locations for the film can be found here.)

When you ask the Icelandic audio-visual arts icon to go deep on the tour-turned-movie,...

One Of The Most Underrated Sci-Fi Shows Ever Got A Terrible Prime Video Adaptation
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Utopia" and its 2020 adaptation.

Have you ever watched a television series on a whim, only to be blown away by its audacious brilliance and baffled by how criminally overlooked it is? Dennis Kelly's British sci-fi thriller, "Utopia," slots into this category of shows that remain overlooked despite being profusely lauded during their run on network television. It is a series that should be on every " X Best Television Shows" list of the past decade, but unfortunately, this Channel 4 drama never managed to achieve mainstream success despite getting an American adaptation. Before we talk about the maligned 2020 adaptation, let us take a peek into the wonderfully strange and gratuitously violent world of "Utopia," and why it was abruptly cancelled after two seasons.

"Utopia" revolves around an unpublished graphic novel sequel titled "The Utopia Experiments Part 2," which is rumored to contain information that predicts the fate of the world.

‘WrestleMania 41’ Soundtrack: Every WWE Superstar and Their Entrance Music
Image
The stage is set. The lights will blaze. And Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is about to explode with energy on April 19–20, 2025, as WrestleMania 41 storms into town. It’s gonna be a battleground for epic clashes—like Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena and a triple threat war featuring Roman Reigns, Cm Punk, and Seth Rollins. But how will it be satisfying without the entrance music that sets the stage, sparks the crowd, and transforms superstars into legends?

The official WrestleMania 41 theme song is Playboi Carti and Travis Scott’s Fein, which is a hardcore hip-hop anthem meant to hype the WWE universe. Scott’s Utopia album featured Fein in 2023 as a trap and rage composition good enough for WrestleMania’s high action.

10 Best Sasha Lane Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
There may be no other working American actor as underrated as Sasha Lane in her generation. The 29-year-old Houston, TX native has been acting in movies and TV shows for nearly a decade now, and in that time, she's had relatively few starring roles. But her eye for projects has been consistently refined, and even her smaller performances have left an indelible mark on anyone who's been following her filmography.

It all began with the premiere of Lane's screen acting debut, "American Honey," in the main competition of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where she managed to steal the spotlight even next to such towering, acclaimed performances as Isabelle Huppert in "Elle," Kim Min-hee in "The Handmaiden," Sônia Braga in "Aquarius," Sandra Hüller in "Toni Erdmann," Kristen Stewart in "Personal Shopper," and Ruth Negga in "Loving." Since then, Lane has accrued just under 20 acting credits, with nearly all of those being in deeply interesting projects,...

10 Best-Designed Ace Monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Franchise, Ranked
Image
One of the biggest appeals of Yu-Gi-Oh!are the monsters that duelists use in each of the anime. Naturally, the monsters with the best designs are the ones that serve as Ace Monsters, the signature cards of duelists. Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon began this trend, and they've had many legendary successors.

Ace Monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh! say a lot about the duelists who use them, and some have far cooler designs than others. Many of those with the greatest designs are those that belong to certain popular groups, like the Egyptian God Cards and the Signer Dragons. Each installment in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime franchise also has its own unique aesthetic, and some of these enable stronger and more memorable designs than others.
