(Warning: This story contains spoilers for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance).
In the final scenes of The Substance, things get messy.
Coralie Fargeat’s body horror satire follows the descent of former A-lister Elisabeth Sparkle who, in a desperate attempt to recapture her youth and stay relevant in sexist and ageist Hollywood, starts taking a mysterious chemical called The Substance. Things go very, very wrong.
Shortly after injecting the substance, Sparkle (Demi Moore, who just picked up her first-ever Golden Globe for the role) is writhing on her bathroom floor. Her back splits down the spine and Sue, a slimy, younger version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley) crawls out. Initially, the two clones follow the plan, swapping out every seven days. The body in the bathroom is kept alive with a feeding tube, while the other free is free live their life.

With the Academy Awards in March approaching, a certain modern body horror hit starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley is getting another theatrical release. The Golden Globes have already recognized Moore's stellar performance with a well-deserved win for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, but will the Oscars give The Substance the same chance for recognition?
The film, about an aging actress trying new treatment to get her career back, is returning to theaters on Friday, Jan, 17, to hopefully gain a better chance of being accepted as a nomination for the 2025 Oscars.
Directed by Coralie Fargeat, it explores themes of age and value in a strikingly visual way, and studio Mubi is taking the proactive step to ensure the unconventional film gets a fighting chance at this year's Academy Awards. The Substance will be re-released in more than 350 theaters in the U.S. this week, providing audiences that didn't...

“I really want the flesh and blood to be real.”
That’s what “The Substance” director Coralie Fargeat told special makeup effects designer Pierre Olivier Persin when they met to discuss the body horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. “I thought that half of it would be VFX or a mix of techniques,” Persin tells Gold Derby. After agreeing to go the practical route, the makeup designer says, “That was like a teenage dream because in France, especially when I grew up, there were no makeup effects studios.” Watch the full video interview above.
In “The Substance,” a fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself. However, if the drug isn’t administered properly, drastic changes can occur in the source’s body, including rapid aging. This was something Persin had to master, as Moore’s character went through a gradual,...

As Hollywood faces its greatest challenge to date—an audience drawn to streaming and empowered by ever-advancing technology—the cinematic landscape is undergoing a transformation unlike anything in its history. Artificial Intelligence (AI), democratized production tools, and ethical concerns over the nature of creativity are reshaping the industry from every angle, from the technology of filmmaking to the theaters themselves. We try to examine how these forces could redefine the future of Hollywood and what it might mean for filmmakers, audiences, and traditional roles within the industry. But we just try… so bear with us.
Hollywood’s Future: AI, Streaming, and the Transformation of Filmmaking The decline of traditional Hollywood and the rise of streaming Changing consumption patterns
The last decade has seen a surge in streaming platforms, which have fundamentally altered audience habits and diminished theater attendance. Consumers now expect on-demand access to high-quality content in their homes, and Hollywood has had to respond.

Spencer Grammer, Harland Williams, Will Friedle, Harry Lennix, Juliana Harkavy and John Dimaggio are among the performers comprising the ensemble voice cast of the animated sci-fi comedy movie Isla Monstro.
Hailing from multimedia company Abyssmal Entertainment, the feature has completed production and launches promotion at San Diego Comic-Con with a booth and a panel taking place Saturday. The project is directed and animated by Steven Shea (Surviving Supercon), who co-wrote the script with James Schrader, and it is currently seeking distribution.
Isla Monstro centers on ne’er-do-well Duke (voiced by Schrader), who falls off a cruise ship and awakens on an abandoned, top secret government island that is rampant with mutants and monsters left over from a failed “super soldier” mission from the 1980s. Duke concocts a scheme to convert the island into a high-class resort getaway with the creatures serving as staff, which does not please the U.S. government.

Ben Platt’s debut studio album, 2019’s Sing to Me Instead, leaned toward the kind of traditional vocal pop that’s typically associated with artists whose roots are in theater. Where it was filled with soft songs to quell an anxious, lonely heart, 2021’s Reverie was its antithesis, a synth-pop-inflected soundtrack to falling in love in your childhood bedroom.
On his third studio album, Honeymind, Platt—who’s now engaged to fellow Broadway actor Noah Galvin—sounds even more confident in his queerness. Although he laments having found true love, he doesn’t shy away from sharing insights into previous relationships. On “Andrew,” he sings: “My senses go numb/My brain is on fire/They say wanting someone is supposed to be fun/That’s because they never loved an Andrew.”

Tackling a horror remake is a dicey prospect. On the one hand, this genre is a hallowed ground; fans do not want their favorite films and franchises to be toyed with! On the other hand, some of the early classics might truly be great, but a later remaining could top it with a different angle. 1942's Cat People is an undeniably effective and wonderful chiller with its eerie, moody aesthetics, but Brian De Palma's 1982 remake more than earns its place by flipping the script entirely and turning the whole premise into a supernatural erotic thriller. John Carpenter's remake, re-adaptation, whatever you want to call it, of Who Goes There? is such a massive improvement over the original The Thing that it's as if only deep genre fans even remember Christian Nyby's original. Some think that it's sacrilegious to tamper with monumental genre cornerstones, but we'd be lying...

Christian Bale's dedication to embodying Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins with a 100-pound weight gain showcased his commitment to the role. Michael Caine, despite retiring from acting at 91, maintained a close working relationship with Christopher Nolan post-Batman Begins. Cillian Murphy's impressive career post-Batman Begins includes roles in Nolan's films and his significant impact in the cinematic world.
Batman Begins is nearly 20 years old, which begs the question of where the cast that helped create this seminal DC movie is now. Batman Begins was released in 2005 and helped reinvent the image of Batman and superhero movies generally. The Batman movie franchise of the 1980s and 90s painted a pretty campy picture of the Caped Crusader, whose more iconic depiction as a dark and brooding vigilante was better served by Christopher Nolan and his more mature take on the character.

“Bridgerton” Season 3 is off to a steamy hot start.
The third season of the Shondaland period drama drew 45.1 million views over its first four days of availability, according to Netflix, easily finishing first on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list. Take that, Tom Brady roast.
It was the biggest week — by quite a bit — for any series on Netflix since the streamer changed its core metric from hours viewed to views in mid-June 2023.
The first four “Bridgerton” Season 3 episodes reached number 1 in 78 countries and the Top 10 in 92, Netflix said. The next four episodes premiere on June 13; try not to obsess over the big cliffhanger between now and then.
The third season of “Bridgerton” also brought the first two back to (some semblance of) their former glory. “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 both returned to Netflix’s Top 10 TV (in any language) list in the week ahead of Season 3. They did even better during Season 3’s premiere week.

Recently, The Kardashians star, Kylie Jenner, gave fans a big shock after posting a photo. She has altered her face in the photo so much that she appears to be wearing a mask. Many fans don’t think she even looks like herself anymore.
Kylie Jenner’s Appearance Is Changing Again
Undoubtedly, The Kardashians stars always change one thing or another about their appearances. However, some alterations are more drastic than others. While Kylie Jenner has been dropping weight over the past few months, her face is showing what fans are speculating is another facial surgery. Earlier this year, some fans were quick to point out her chin was noticeably different, believing it was a botched chin implant to blame. But now, with her latest pictures, it seems she is jumping back under the knife. Notably, all the updates were finished before the big premiere of The Kardashians Season 5 later this week.

The Wolf Man remains one of the horror genre's most iconic movie monsters and in 2017, there were plans for him to take centre stage in Universal's ill-fated "Dark Universe."
The idea of an McU-inspired shared world featuring these creatures crumbled when The Mummy bombed, leaving the studio with no other choice than to part ways with Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, and Javier Bardem.
There's been some chatter about Universal attempting to revive its Dark Universe, but filmmaker Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man won't be part of them.

Mark Damon, a film producer, sales executive, and spaghetti Western actor, died at 91, representatives for the executive told Deadline on Sunday night.
Damon, born Alan Harris in Chicago, started his career in Hollywood in 1956 after signing a contract with 20th Century Fox. After starring in House of Usher, Damon won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. The film was directed by Roger Corman, who died on Thursday.
Damon would move to Italy and star in films like The Reluctant Saint (1962), The Young Racers (1963), The Shortest Day (1963), Black Sabbath (1963), 100 Horseman (1964), Secret Agent 777 (1965), Dio, Come Ti Amo! (1966) and Johnny Oro (1966).
he first entered the world of independent sales and production in the 1970s while living and working in Italy where he saw a large market of independent international distributors eager for top American movies. Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.
This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.
Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

Ryan Murphy is a master when it comes to depicting true crime events. His first entry into his Monster series was the story of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. The Netflix show aired in 2022 and earned 13 Emmy nominations. So, it's no surprise that Murphy would want to add another season to his hit anthology. This upcoming season will be titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Many people are already familiar with the horrifying case of the Menendez brothers from 1989, but not everyone will remember that the case was already dramatized for television audiences in recent years.

It’s a great time to be an anime fan. 2023 was full of great shows, both new and returning. Jujutsu Kaisen returned for an award-winning second season, Demon Slayer reminded fans why they were the best in animation, and One Piece continues to blow us away. And as far as new content, Netflix reminded fans to not count them out when they released Pluto and Zom 100, two of the best new anime. 2024 promises to be an epic year as well.

Abigail's success proves a refreshing turn for Universal Monsters after the disappointing response to Nicolas Cage's vampire film. Monsters in The Far Side range from kaiju to Hammer Horror classics - something for every monster fan! Some Far Side comics like "Monster Snorkel" are based on Larson's own childhood fears. Larson's signature dark humor is highlighted, with his best strips telling short stories in a single image.
Gary Larson's The Far Side is known for its hilarious but often dark sense of humor, and nothing embodies this quite as much as its many, many comics about ghosts, ghouls, and monsters. In many ways, The Far Side itself was inspired by a monster story - Morrell Gipson's surreal kids' book Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat, in which a giant bear crushes various victims underneath its bulk. It's not exactly King Kong, but this early influence does have the same flavor as Larson's monstrous creations.

Horror characters team up for epic crossovers, from Freddy vs. Jason to a potential Poohniverse with Winnie The Pooh and other classics. 1940s Universal Monsters led the way in crossovers, with Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman uniting in iconic films for audiences to enjoy. Monster Squad transformed classic horror villains into superheroes for a younger audience, delivering fun costume designs and elaborate stage sets.
Bringing horror characters together for a frenzy-filled crossover has always been a time-honored staple of Hollywood productions. Just look at 2003’s Freddy vs Jason, which saw the Springwood slasher go up against the massive, hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding maniac. Then there was the planned Dark Universe by Universal Pictures that, unfortunately, never saw past 2017’s The Mummy. Whether it was due to the fact that Tom Cruise’s involvement was wasted or because the action itself took precedence over the story, any future world-building turned into meaningless cameos and teases.

Solo Leveling's psychological tones and dark themes parallel those of Monster, challenging traditional anime portrayals.
In the Solo Leveling anime, Jinwoo's character journey begins with his near-death experience and a second chance at life. Even though anime has become known for isekai and reincarnation stories that follow similar themes, Jinwoo's story is far more similar to a classic series that — like Solo Leveling — is drenched in harsh reality. Some anime fans might recognize this Naoki Urasawa series as a legendary part of the anime industry.
Jinwoo is introduced during his lowest point when he is famously known as "the weakest Hunter of mankind." It's only through his excruciating...

He may be king of the monsters and headliner of the longest-running film franchise, but Godzilla isn’t exactly a beacon of consistency. He made his premiere in Honda Ishirô’s 1954 classic Godzilla as an allegorical figure, warning of the dangers of nuclear technology, before eventually settling into a drive-in movie star and a hero for children, as well as those young at heart. That’s a somewhat unlikely legacy, especially considering that the original film ends with the creature’s unambiguous death.
Inspired by King Kong’s popularity in Japan, Godzilla’s filmmakers didn’t have the time or resources to execute the stop-motion movie magic that brought Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s King Kong to life (the 1933 monster adventure was re-released in Japan in 1952), but their resourcefulness and ingenuity resulted in a different kind of magic. Tsuburaya Eiji’s pioneering use of suitmation was not...

That flickering feeling of unease that seems to creep across oneself in the night; a suggestion of the evil that lies within humanity condensed into an experience. Naoki Urasawa's “Monster” captures just this sensation. Adapted by Madhouse and Masayuki Kojima twenty years ago, the story of the wronged doctor chasing down the devil-incarnate manages to stick in the memory of all those who have seen it. The manga was the grand prize winner of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize in 1999 and its anime adaptation was equally acclaimed amongst fans and critics. Its unmistakable blend of horror and psychological crime thriller captivated audiences and left its mark in the cultural footprint of the anime industry.

Jujutsu Kaisen has reached the peak of popularity, and there are hardly any anime that come close to it. It is going through a crucial phase, with the King of Curses becoming more potent. Multiple Jujutsu sorcerers have come and gone, but none were strong enough to end Ryomen Sukuna’s terror. The fans are hoping to see Yuji Itadori get a power-up soon.
Jujutsu Kaisen has often made headlines with positive as well as negative reasons. While the positive reasons are mainly related to the anime and manga, the negative reasons are caused by the mangaka. But recently, several people have been lashing out at the anime after they swept away the awards at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

The Conjuring star Joey King recently admitted that she has only seen the original film in the beloved horror franchise, although she has a pretty good reason as to why she has so far skipped out on watching the other installments.
Speaking with Screen Rant to promote her new series, We Were the Lucky Ones, King explained that The Conjuring Universe is too "scary" for her to fully enjoy, noting that she still sees the Witch Bathsheba Sherman's face before going to sleep some nights. "Yeah. Oh my gosh, the first Conjuring, I was in it. I was there for the whole thing. It is so difficult for me to watch. It is so scary. It's not difficult in any other way but that it is so scary. I have such an issue," she said. "But I'm so proud of everybody. I was just so proud of everybody involved,...
