In the final scenes of The Substance, things get messy.

Coralie Fargeat’s body horror satire follows the descent of former A-lister Elisabeth Sparkle who, in a desperate attempt to recapture her youth and stay relevant in sexist and ageist Hollywood, starts taking a mysterious chemical called The Substance. Things go very, very wrong.

Shortly after injecting the substance, Sparkle (Demi Moore, who just picked up her first-ever Golden Globe for the role) is writhing on her bathroom floor. Her back splits down the spine and Sue, a slimy, younger version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley) crawls out. Initially, the two clones follow the plan, swapping out every seven days. The body in the bathroom is kept alive with a feeding tube, while the other free is free live their life.

“I really want the flesh and blood to be real.”

That’s what “The Substance” director Coralie Fargeat told special makeup effects designer Pierre Olivier Persin when they met to discuss the body horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. “I thought that half of it would be VFX or a mix of techniques,” Persin tells Gold Derby. Isla Monstro centers on ne’er-do-well Duke (voiced by Schrader), who falls off a cruise ship and awakens on an abandoned, top secret government island that is rampant with mutants and monsters left over from a failed “super soldier” mission from the 1980s. Duke concocts a scheme to convert the island into a high-class resort getaway with the creatures serving as staff, which does not please the U.S. government.

Richard Jenkins has been cast in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series adaptation of the “Criminal” graphic novels, Variety has learned.

The series was originally ordered at Amazon back in January. Jenkins is the first confirmed cast member. The show is described as “an interlocking universe of crime stories” based on the graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

Jenkins will play Ivan. The character is described as “Leo’s dad’s best friend, and has always been an uncle figure to him. He used to be a robber and criminal, but is now currently suffering from dementia. Leo is trying to care for him but realizes he’s more work than he can handle.”

In the wake of Rob Zombie’s direct-to-video movie The Munsters back in 2022, Universal has now announced “1313,” a brand new small screen reboot of the iconic television series.

Developed and produced by James Wan’s company Atomic Monster, the new Universal horror series is said to be “a reimagining of the 1964 classic sitcom The Munsters that lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse.”

Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) will serve as the showrunner for “1313.” The title is of course a reference to the Munster family’s address, 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

Deadline notes in their report, “The project is being developed by James Wan, Beer, and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and Lab Brew are the production companies.”

Executive producers are Lindsey Anderson Beer and James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Ingrid Bisu is a co-exec producer on the upcoming series.

Cannes market attendees have been paying tribute to Mark Damon, the veteran sales agent credited with inventing the independent film financing model who died on the eve of Cannes aged 91.

Chicago-born Damon entered the world of independent sales and production in the 1970’s while living and working in Italy where he had pursued a successful career as a leading man in spaghetti westerns.

He returned to the United States in 1977 and founded Producer Sales Organization (Pso) and grew his business licencing international rights on commercial independent films. Damon also established Vision International, Mdp Worldwide, Media 8, and most recently Foresight Unlimited.

“Bridgerton” Season 3 is off to a steamy hot start.

The third season of the Shondaland period drama drew 45.1 million views over its first four days of availability, according to Netflix, easily finishing first on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list. Take that, Tom Brady roast.

It was the biggest week — by quite a bit — for any series on Netflix since the streamer changed its core metric from hours viewed to views in mid-June 2023.

The first four “Bridgerton” Season 3 episodes reached number 1 in 78 countries and the Top 10 in 92, Netflix said. The next four episodes premiere on June 13; try not to obsess over the big cliffhanger between now and then.

The third season of “Bridgerton” also brought the first two back to (some semblance of) their former glory. “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 both returned to Netflix’s Top 10 TV (in any language) list in the week ahead of Season 3. They did even better during Season 3’s premiere week.

Mark Damon, a film producer, sales executive, and spaghetti Western actor, died at 91, representatives for the executive told Deadline on Sunday night.

Damon, born Alan Harris in Chicago, started his career in Hollywood in 1956 after signing a contract with 20th Century Fox. After starring in House of Usher, Damon won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. The film was directed by Roger Corman, who died on Thursday.

Damon would move to Italy and star in films like The Reluctant Saint (1962), The Young Racers (1963), The Shortest Day (1963), Black Sabbath (1963), 100 Horseman (1964), Secret Agent 777 (1965), Dio, Come Ti Amo! (1966) and Johnny Oro (1966).

Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.

This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.

Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

HBO is blasting off to Chromatica later this month. The cabler has announced that the concert special Gaga Chromatica Ball will debut Saturday, May 25 at 8/7c, and will be available to stream on Max.

General Hospital (Gh) spoilers note there’s a ton of speculations surrounding Nicholas Chavez’s (Spencer Cassadine) status with the soap. After all, it was confirmed that the young actor would start filming the Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, as Nicholas is playing the role of Lyle Menendez.

Viewers were under the impression that he’d be gone for approximately three months – after his Monster movie duties finished up. Still, an unusual chain of events has some fans wondering if Nicholas or Spencer will end up returning to Port Charles, anytime soon.

April is going to be another killer month for the horror genre. Arguably the most exciting film to be biting its way to theaters this month is Abigail, the new Universal Monster film from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream VI). With just a few short weeks to go until this blood-sucking nightmare releases, the second trailer just debuted to the delight of many horror fans. However, enthusiasm surrounding the film isn’t just limited to moviegoers, as star Kathryn Newton has shared new behind-the-scenes images of her character Sammy from Abigail.

Horror characters team up for epic crossovers, from Freddy vs. Jason to a potential Poohniverse with Winnie The Pooh and other classics. 1940s Universal Monsters led the way in crossovers, with Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman uniting in iconic films for audiences to enjoy. Monster Squad transformed classic horror villains into superheroes for a younger audience, delivering fun costume designs and elaborate stage sets.

Bringing horror characters together for a frenzy-filled crossover has always been a time-honored staple of Hollywood productions. Just look at 2003’s Freddy vs Jason, which saw the Springwood slasher go up against the massive, hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding maniac. Then there was the planned Dark Universe by Universal Pictures that, unfortunately, never saw past 2017’s The Mummy. Whether it was due to the fact that Tom Cruise’s involvement was wasted or because the action itself took precedence over the story, any future world-building turned into meaningless cameos and teases.

Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Other filmmakers would make us wait a long time to see their take on the iconic characters at play in this story, but Gyllenhaal has already gone ahead and given us the first look at Jessie Buckley as the titular Bride, as well as Christina Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster.
