While The Handmaid's Tale’s upcoming spin-off, The Testaments, is still a work in progress with principal photography having wrapped earlier this month, one of the show’s original stars has made a decision about her future in the franchise. That star is Samira Wiley, who is best known as Moira Strand, June's best friend since college, and who was still alive at the end of the sixth and final season of the dystopian series. Wiley has made up her mind that she will “absolutely not” return in the new sequel, and she ensured to explain her reasons while promoting her latest show, Atomic.

The Studio is the clear favorite to win Best Comedy Directing for its very meta second episode, "The Oner." The installment was directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who were also at the helm of every single episode of the first season.
Rogen earned three additional nominations for The Studio: Best Comedy Series as an executive producer, Best Comedy Actor as the star of the show, and Best Comedy Writing for co-penning the pilot episode, "The Promotion." Rogen now has a total of nine Emmy nominations throughout his career, and has yet to win. But he has a very good chance of finally breaking through in 2026.

Peter Friedlander, head of U.S. and Canada scripted series at Netflix, is leaving the streamer after 14 years. Jinny Howe will move up to take his place leading the division.
Friedlander is one of Netflix’s longest-serving creative executives, having joined the company in 2011. That was right around when Netflix announced its first foray into original series with House of Cards, which would premiere in 2013. The departure is amicable, as Friedlander will look to do something different after 14 years at Netflix.
“This has truly been the ride of a lifetime. Joining as the very first employee on the original series team and witnessing this company’s incredible journey — growing into one of the most beloved entertainment brands in the world — has been the thrill of my career,” Friedlander said in a statement. “I’m deeply grateful to [co-ceos] Ted [Sarandos], Greg [Peters], and [chief content officer] Bela [Bajaria] for the opportunity to work alongside them, and...

The show stars Valentina Zenere as a model who is charged with murder and sent to prison, where she must quickly learn the essentials of survival while also trying to prove her innocence. Stranger Things took Netflix to a new level when its first season debuted on the streamer in 2016. The service was already on the rise from previous original productions like Orange Is the New Black (2013). Still, something about the science fiction horror series made Netflix the destination for quality, new shows, and movies. The Duffer Brothers, who created Stranger Things, have played a vital role in keeping the streamer neck-to-neck with competitors like Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Paramount. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the brothers are reportedly in talks to leave Netflix for Paramount, and they're eyeing a deal that could be too good to pass up.
The Duffer Brothers, whose first names are Matt and Ross, could snag an overall deal with Paramount, and, according to THR, it would reunite them with Cindy Holland, former head of originals at Netflix, who is now Chair of Direct-to-Consumer for Paramount,...

Taylor Sheridan’s hold on Paramount+ just got a fresh vote of confidence from the studio’s new leadership. Following the official merger between Paramount and Skydance, Paramount’s newly appointed Chair of Direct-to-Consumer Cindy Holland made her first public remarks about the platform’s future — and put Sheridan’s sprawling TV empire front and center.
“We want to entertain all audiences around the world on Paramount+ today,” Holland said during a press conference on Wednesday on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles. “We have a really great foundation, which is the Taylor Sheridan universe. We also have incredible CBS next-day, live sports, a lot from the cable networks, franchises like Star Trek, so many series. We’re seeking to expand that and make sure that we’re offering programming for everybody — not just occasionally, not just for the one thing, but hopefully a daily habit for all audiences.”

Growing up, David Ellison spent every Sunday going to the movies with his mother and his sister, Annapurna founder Megan Ellison. As an adult, he spent more than 15 years pursuing his wish to run a legacy Hollywood studio. Now, his dream has become reality and all eyes are on the young mogul to see if he can right a movie studio that has been all but run into the ground.
On Wednesday, Ellison, the ambitious and introspective son of tech billionaire Larry Ellison showed off his new throne — metaphorically speaking — when hosting a meet-and-greet for journalists on the storied Melrose Lot in Hollywood, home of the newly minted Paramount-Skydance. The gathering of he and his C-suite followed a similar event in New York held Aug. 7, the day the $8 billion merger officially closed. The L.A. presser focused more on the movie and TV side, which includes CBS, its cable channels and Paramount+.

A new horror film called The Home, from The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco, reached theatres last Friday, and while JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols wasn’t thrilled by the movie (you can read his 4/10 review Here), lead actor Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) did find the filming of one particular scene to be quite unnerving – and he put his own eyeball at risk so DeMonaco could get the shot! At least it ended up being enough of a notable moment that it’s featured on the poster, which shows a syringe needle almost touching an eyeball.
Scripted by DeMonaco and Adam Canto, The Home sees Davidson taking on the role of Max, a troubled man who starts working at a retirement home and realizes its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. As he investigates the building and its forbidden fourth floor, he starts to uncover connections to his own...

Every year, the Television Academy bestows Emmy Awards for lead, supporting, and guest acting performances, depending on screen time and/or eligibility factors like episode count. It's quite rare for someone to win in all three categories throughout their careers — but not impossible.
At the 2025 Emmys, Best Drama Actress nominee Kathy Bates (Matlock) and Best Comedy Actress nominee Uzo Aduba (The Residence) could join the esteemed list that includes some truly iconic television personalities.
Bates, our predictions frontrunner for CBS' reimagined Matlock, previously won in supporting for the limited series American Horror Story: Coven (2014) and in guest for the comedy series Two and a Half Men (2012). Aduba, currently ranked fifth for the recently canceled The Residence, is a double champion in supporting for the limited series Mrs. America (2020) and the drama series Orange Is the New Black (2015), plus she won in guest for the latter when it was classified as...

Given how shows like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos" helped turn HBO into the destination for quality television in the late '90s and early 2000s, it isn't too surprising that Netflix would see a similar rise to prominence off the back of its own well-received crime-influenced series like "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," and even "Bloodline." It causes one to wonder what exactly it is about these stories that makes them so central to the midwifing of new eras of television -- perhaps such crime dramas, universally captivating despite often being too violent, disturbing, and complicated for mainstream TV, naturally find themselves at home wherever risks are most welcome.
Whatever the case, Netflix is now where many go for the thrills that a simulated life of crime can offer. Whether a viewer is looking for a classic series that predated the streamer's existence or is willing...

Meghan Markle’s Netflix show, “With Love, Meghan,” debuted at a humiliating 383 on the first half of the 2025 Netflix list. It failed to make the top ten programs as the Duchess of Sussex suffers another massive flop.
“With Love, Meghan.” Only Had 5.3 Million Viewers Across The Globe
“With Love, Meghan” shows Meghan hosting, cooking, and gardening. Her series had only 5.3 million viewers worldwide since it was first broadcast in March.
That said, Meghan, who played in the legal drama, “Suits,” is far more popular on the streaming giant than “With Love, Meghan.”
Even older shows like “Young Sheldon” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” are outperforming Meghan’s show. People enjoy older shows more.
Even Netflix series that have been viewed a thousand times by fans, like “Ozark” and “Orange is the New Black,” are watched more often than “With Love, Meghan.”

Menemsha Films’ comedy Bad Shabbos passed $1 million at the U.S. box office this weekend with a $53k gross on 30 screens, the latest in a string of small often quirky indie releases that opened limited and continued a slow rollout over months, or longer.
They include Mike Cheslik’s dialogue-free supernatural winter epic Hundreds Of Beavers, which opened Stateside in January of 2024, raked up $724k domestic and $1.2 million worldwide, and was still playing some college towns until fairly recently to enthusiastic fans with beaver-tail hats.
Documentary Secret Mall Apartment from Wheelhouse Creative took in $846k starting with a launch in Providence, Rhode Island in March at Providence Place Mall, where the renegade filmmakers created a secret apartment in 2003 and kept it going for four years.
Utopia’s Pavements, a hybrid documentary by Alex Ross Perry about American indie band Pavement, debuted in theaters in early May and is at $345k and continuing its road show.

Over the course of its first six seasons, Netflix's wildly popular drama series "Virgin River" has introduced viewers to a vast ensemble of characters, even beyond the show's protagonist, Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), and the man she falls for, Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson). While "Virgin River" has a few typical locations, such as Jack's restaurant (fittingly titled Jack's Bar), Mel spends her days as a nurse practitioner working for the town physician, Vernon "Doc" Mullins (Tim Matheson). And throughout the series' lengthy run Doc's home office has allowed Mel to interact with all manner of patients, fellow medical professionals, and other assorted staff members.
Among the relatively recent additions to the series is Dr. Cameron Hayek (Mark Ghanimé), who joined the show in season 4. Because Doc continues to age and has been in danger of losing his eyesight permanently, having a younger doctor on staff made perfect sense. Of course,...

The 2025 Emmy nominations were filled with some jaw-dropping picks, with several actors and programs beating the Gold Derby's odds.
In our latest snap poll, readers said the bids for Zoë Kravitz and Meghann Fahy caused their jaws to drop the widest. Kravitz was previously snubbed at the Emmys for Big Little Lies, but she received sweet justice this week for portraying herself — at least, a fictionalized version of herself caught in a drug-related mishap — on The Studio. In all, the Apple TV+ show received 23 nominations, more than any other first-year comedy in Emmy history.
As for Fahy, she's a former Emmy nominee for The White Lotus whom awards pundits forecasted would be overlooked this year for the Netflix limited series Sirens. But that wasn't the case. She clearly wowed voters in her role of Devon DeWitt, a woman who tries to protect her younger sister Simone (Milly Alcock) from her...

The global streaming service Netflix is known for its original TV shows as much as it is for its backlog of older content, and the series that have been topping the charts might come as a surprise. Though Netflix cancels a lot of its shows, leading to outcries from critics and audiences, the streamer's data indicates that its original content has the potential to become more popular with time.
According to Netflix's recent Engagement Report, fans are returning to older, classic TV shows that have been on Netflix for many years.
Shows like Orange Is the New Black, Ozark and Money Heist all had over 100M hours viewed in the first half of 2025.
However, Netflix's report touched on more than just the TV shows that have been performing well. The streamer highlights the fact that non-English language titles are exploding in popularity, and there's no single version of content that Netflix users prefer.

Right after landing 13 Emmy nominations Tuesday, another bit of impressive news for Netflix’s Adolescence — the mighty limited series that could was by far the most-watched TV title on the streamer in the first half of the year.
In fact, with 145M views from its premiere date on March 13 through the end of June, it was the second most-watched title overall, behind only Jamie Foxx’s Back in Action (with 165M), per Netflix’s latest What We Watched report, which details viewing across every Netflix title from January 2025 to June 2025. It is worth noting, though, that Back in Action was released in January, which gave it a huge time advantage over Adolescence to make up an extra 20M or so views.
To further illustrate this monster performance for Adolescence, it’s more than both Seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game, which were the second and third best performing titles of the...

Netflix released its biannual viewership report Thursday alongside its earnings, with U.K. breakout hit “Adolescence” topping the TV side and action-comedy “Back in Action” starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz landing as the most-viewed movie on the service.
The latest Engagement Report covers about 99% of the viewing of what Netflix members watched from January through June 2025. Netflix measures engagement by views, which it calculates by total hours viewed divided by runtime. Overall, subscribers watched 95 billion hours globally in the first half of 2025, up slightly from 94 billion in the year-earlier period. That 1% uptick in engagement came amid higher competition for Netflix, co-ceo Greg Peters said on the earnings interview Thursday, and he said the company expects a stronger increase in viewing for the second half of 2025 “given the strength of our second-half slate.”

One of The CW's biggest hits is coming back for another season. Sullivan's Crossing has been renewed for a fourth season, with the romantic drama series set to return to The CW in 2026.
The renewal comes ahead of its Season 3 finale, which airs tonight, July 16, on The CW at 8 p.m. Speaking with Deadline, which first reported the renewal, The CW president Brad Schwartz shared that ordering another 10-episode season of Sullivan's Crossing was an "easy" decision, given that the drama is a Top 3 show on the network by both total audience and 18-49 demographic. Sullivan's Crossing has also become a surprise hit on streaming, with its first two seasons recently ranking as the No. 1 show on Netflix in the United States, with 22 million hours watched in its first week on the platform.
The CW's decision to renew Sullivan's Crossing isn't entirely surprising, considering that CTV had already ordered a fourth season.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 years since Orange Is the New Black exploded into pop culture.
With its raw and often unflinching portrayal of the U.S. prison system through a female lens, it earned a passionate fan base and quickly became one of Netflix’s first true cultural juggernauts.
It wasn’t just good — it was addictive. The kind of show that made people cancel weekend plans, binge 13 episodes straight, and then talk about it for months.
(JoJo Whilden/Netflix)
This was back when binge-watching still felt fresh and exciting, not a chore.
Orange Is the New Black was one of the first shows to prove that Netflix‘s full-season-drop model could actually work, at a time when streaming was still finding its footing and prestige TV was mostly confined to cable.
(JoJo Whilden/Netflix)
Now, streaming is overcrowded, competitive, and cutthroat. Big-budget dramas get axed after one season.

When it comes to the recent 2024-2025 TV season, one series dominated viewership in the United States far and above anything else: Season 2 of Netflix’s “Squid Game.” It wasn’t even close: Include multiplatform viewing for all series — broadcast, cable and streaming — and the show dominated. And yet, “Squid Game” was completely ignored this year by Television Academy voters, and the show didn’t receive a single nomination on Tuesday.
It’s not that “Squid Game” isn’t an Emmy show. In Season 1, the Korean-based series received 14 nominations and won six — including outstanding drama directing (for Hwang Dong-hyuk) and lead drama actor (Lee Jung-jae). So how could it be completely blanked in Season 2? Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria was wondering the same thing.
“‘Squid Game’ had an incredible cultural impact. Biggest show in the world,” she told Variety. “That first season really made Emmy history, and people loved this last season too.

Several recently departed series are getting a nice Emmy sendoff with nominations for their final seasons. The list includes two shows designed for a short run, Disney+’s Andor and Netflix’s Arcane, as well as FX veteran What We Do In the Shadows and HBO’s Somebody Somewhere.
Andor picked up 14 nominations for its second and final season, including Outstanding Drama Series as well as Writing and Directing For a Drama Series. That that exceeds the Season 1 haul for the Star Wars offshoot, which included eight nominations, including again Outstanding Drama Series, Writing and Directing For A Drama Series.
Arcane, set in Riot’s League of Legends universe, also ended its run after two seasons. Its Season 2 nominations tally, two, is down from five noms for Season 1 but that includes another Outstanding Animated Program nomination. The series already won the top animated category in 2022, the first streaming show to do so.

'Tis the day of the Emmys and all through the house, surprises are stirring and snubs are inspiring grouse. While fans of Hacks, Severance, and The White Lotus had plenty to cheer about, Squid Game, The Handmaid's Tale and The Voice are among the high-profile shows that went overlooked by voters. On the other hand, Uzo Aduba and Colman Domingo pulled off surprise victories that the odds didn't see coming.
