One of the great things about Crunchyroll is the incredible size of the streaming service's catalog. With so much anime to choose from, there's virtually something for everyone, including those searching for more mature content. As TV age ratings continue to evolve, sometimes even those with a TV-14 rating may have mature themes, visuals, language, and portray things like graphic violence, drug or alcohol use, and sexual content.
Maturity may also reflect deep or disturbing themes or messages that won't be found in anime more suitable to younger viewers. Deep dives into the systematic flaws in society and fighting inner-demons while searching for the meaning of life and staving off feelings of despair or emptiness just aren't going to make sense to a younger audience. Fortunately for the mature viewer, Crunchyroll has plenty of anime to satisfy those searching for a little more depth.

Plot twists in anime keep the story engaging, but too much can be overwhelming for fans. They can also fall flat if they become too predictable, so an anime always needs to strike a fine balance between over or under doing plot twists. When an anime executes it in a tasteful and clever way, it can elevate the anime to greater lengths and make itself memorable years after its release, such as Attack on Titan and Death Note.
Plot twists are a necessary addition to storytelling as they raise the stakes in stories. They're one of the most important plot devices that can differentiate a good anime from a fantastic one. Some of the best anime that feature this is Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which uses plot twists in the most impactful ways to leave a lasting impression on its viewers.

2025 got off to an excellent start with the return of shows like Solo Leveling and Dr. Stone, which, as always, have been phenomenal in their weekly schedule. However, the momentum did not continue until next month, as there were few other exciting premieres, and it seems like March will be similar, with only a handful of series coming out.
Certainly, the lineup includes an intriguing fantasy anime with a distinctive premise, and manga fans are eagerly waiting for its release. Additionally, next month, we will see the release of a few OVAs from prominent franchises like Kaiju No. 8 and Aldnoah Zero, so the overall conclusion should not be disappointing. So, without further ado, let's explore what anime has in store for fans in March 2025.

Studio Pierrot is one of the top-tier animation studios in Japan, known for producing high-quality anime. Some of their notable works include Naruto, Bleach, and Black Clover. But other than that, they have produced non-shonen works as well.
These include Urusei Yatsura, Emma- A Victorian Romance, and Akatsuki no Yona. Their diverse roster of works is truly commendable in every sense. But above all, the studio also produced a top-notch cyberpunk anime, which remains slept on.

Plenty of great anime have come and gone over the years. Whether you're looking for the next big shōnen action series or a casual slice-of-life comedy, there are plenty of great options for viewers to choose from. Series like Naruto, Chainsaw Man, and My Dress Up Darling are all outstanding anime that got their start through their stellar manga. Even if the anime is more well known, a good manga could be a great gateway for new fans to jump into the next big anime franchise.
However, not all manga adaptations are created equal. For every great adaptation of a series like Psycho-Pass, there are bound to be just as many that miss the mark. It's a shame that many manga adaptations don't get the time they deserve to truly shine. Many times, the subsequent anime could be so bad that it ruins the reputation of the entire series. Any...

Set in 2112, the series portrays a world that is run by an automated law enforcement organization called the Sibyl System. The anime holds a central question about whether it is possible for an algorithm to understand the complexities of the human mind.

There are very few anime series in the industry that can explore the darkness as uniquely as Naoyoshi Shiotani’s Psycho-Pass. While the anime ended long ago, it still continues to inspire the works produced specifically in the crime and psychological thriller genre, considering the hype it created in Japan and in the West when it was initially released.
Psycho-Pass Anime | Credit: Production I.G.
Psycho-Pass follows the adventures of Akane Tsunemori, a young woman who joins the organization called the Sibyl System. The Sibyl System is unique as it can calculate the amount of criminality inside the mind of an individual, analyze it, and keep it stored as data. This data helps in keeping the world peaceful, but some do not agree with these methods.
Shiotani earned a lot of fame and recognition from Psycho-Pass, and it might be one of the, if not the, greatest works by the creator.

Following a series of heavily publicized scandals, Fuji Television Network President Koichi Minato has stepped down to allow Dragon Ball Z producer Kenji Shimizu to take over as the new Fuji TV President.
Fuji TV has been dogged by more than one scandal in the last few months, the most notable of which has been that involving a sexual assault linked to the former leader of Smap, a popular Japanese boy band. Masahiro Nakai has been at the center of the scandal due to his alleged assault of a woman at a 2023 dinner party, which was allegedly planned by Fuji TV staff. The allegations were reported in magazines in December and have led to numerous claims of cover-ups and other misdealings within Fuji TV, including widespread complaints regarding the lack of explanation of the network's handling of the situation, as reported by Japanese news website Oricon.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim director Kenji Kamiyama and producer Joseph Chou have opened up about the film's harrowing production schedule in a new interview, shedding light on its "unprecedented" anime timeframe.
The Lord of the Rings franchise has long followed characters as they undertake harrowing quests. Some are more whimsical, like that of The Hobbit, while others are more dark and terrifying, like that of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. No less harrowing is the journey to bring these stories to the big screen. The struggle to bring Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy to life is well-documented, and the torrid production of The Hobbit has become infamous. Creating an animated film in the series would be no less stressful under normal circumstances -- and Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was not a typical anime production.

Hey, horror friends! I have not written a proper favorites list in a long time, and I am happy to be back with all of you, talking about horror and horror-adjacent things that happened this year. I tried my best to see Nosferatu (2024) before making this list, but, alas, I was not able to. My ticket is booked for the day that it comes out. One of my favorite horror films of all time is the original Nosferatu (1922).
My favorites from this year range from Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs to a Ghostface Chia Pet that I bought from Third Eye Comics while I was in Richmond, Va. So, please buckle up and take a brief journey with me as I recall the things I loved from 2024.
I have a strange relationship with Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs (2024). I came across a short teaser on YouTube, but did not know anything about the movie beforehand.

The genre of procedural dramas has always had a peculiar appeal to audiences and has remained a cultural juggernaut of television for decades. Often centered around the work of law enforcement and episodic in nature, these series treat fans to exciting, mystery-driven storylines within an accessible plot structure. As such, this genre of television, from classic procedural crime dramas like Law & Order and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation to more unorthodox, non-crime-related subversions like House, has never lost its appeal and relevance.
In anime, the procedural formula is not as common, with most shows - especially ones about crime or police work - favoring overarching plotlines over episodic mysteries. Yet, the tropes and narrative elements that make procedural dramas so engrossing can still be found all over the medium. From massive crime drama franchises to hidden gems of the mystery genre, these anime are perfect for fans of procedurals.

Warning: Spoilers for Shangri-La Frontier season 2 episode #1
Shangri-La Frontier was one of the best anime to debut in the Fall 2023 season, laying out its grand yet lighthearted premise of an isekai-lite adventure where Rakuro Hizutome, as his game handle Sunraku, dives into the titular game. The series' excellent animation, consistently good music, and roster of lovable characters is a near-guaranteed experience most viewers will like, as shown by its highly-regarded first season. But as Shangri-La Frontier season 2 began, it was a somewhat disappointing return by no fault of its own, remaining one of the best anime of the Fall 2024 season.
Sunraku's adventures in Shangri-La Frontier are unique. They tell the story of a trash game enthusiast who brings his unique insight from beating unplayable games to the world of the "God-tier game" Slf. The series is not a traditional isekai in that Sunraku can leave Slf at any point, so...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
Once upon a time, the mere thought of anime versions of American pop culture franchises was enough to get everyone to roll their eyes and expect little more than hot garbage — "The Animatrix" notwithstanding. But recent years have broken that curse, with plenty of collaborations resulting in some of the best shows of the decade, including "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and the outlandish "Suicide Squad Isekai," showing that you can, in fact, adapt Western properties into anime.
The latest anime to join this list is "Terminator Zero." The "Terminator" franchise started as high as it possibly could with two back-to-back masterpieces, but it has since become an underwhelming and convoluted mess. As /Film's own Bj Colangelo wrote in her review of "Terminator Zero," this new installment takes "the new...

This post contains spoilers for the "Psycho-Pass" franchise.
In a society equipped to prevent crime, can morality be measured or anticipated? Is every individual capable of adhering to an established threshold, and should people be indiscriminately punished for such transgressions? Naoyoshi Shiotani and Katsuyuki Motohiro's "Psycho-Pass" grapples with these pertinent questions by filtering events through a futuristic, cyberpunk setting where humanity is governed by the Sibyl System. Is Sybil, like the name suggests, an all-knowing psychic entity or perhaps a group of capable individuals making informed decisions on a case-by-case basis? Unfortunately, the answer is no: Sybil is a biomechatronic computer network that constantly scans the citizens of this dystopian nation, assessing the potential of a person indulging in criminality.
This psychological report — dubbed Psycho-Pass — includes a numeric indicator called a Crime Coefficient (Cc), with the accepted threshold being 100. If someone's Crime Coefficient exceeds 100, they're either apprehended or...

Many anime have been released over the past two decades, more so with plenty of manga being licensed in English over the past decade. The increasing amount of licensed manga has contributed to the yearly output of anime, which has had a considerable boom since 2012 with popular releases of anime like Attack on Titan, Kamisama Kiss, Sword Art Online, and Psycho-Pass, among others. However, while plenty of these anime have started off great, many others have ended terribly.

Argentina’s security forces have announced plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to predict future crimes, reminiscent of the dystopian Sibyl System in the anime Psycho-Pass.
This move has sparked concerns about potential threats to citizens’ rights and privacy.
Argentina’s far-right President Javier Milei has established the Artificial Intelligence Applied to Security Unit. This new unit will utilize machine-learning algorithms to analyze historical crime data to predict future crimes and help prevent them.

In Psycho-Pass, the Sibyl System governs a futuristic Japan by continuously measuring the biometrics of citizens’ brains and mentalities using a “cymatic scan.”
This results in a Psycho-Pass, which includes a numeric Crime Coefficient index revealing the citizen’s criminality potential. When a person’s Crime Coefficient rises above 100, they are labeled as a latent criminal and are either isolated or apprehended by law enforcement.

In various anime worlds, Sailor Moon's survival depends on her powers from the Silver Crystal, but her personality may present challenges. Sailor Moon would struggle academically in My Hero Academia but would excel as a Pro-Hero with her Silver Crystal quirk. Her Silver Crystal can be used to transform criminals into good people or heal the dark energy of individuals. However, the Silver Crystal could put her in danger because she can be a threat to several anime worlds, like Psycho-Pass and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation.
Sailor Moon is overpowered due to her possession of the Silver Crystal. The Silver Crystal has healing properties and can purify dark energy within people. Thus, it is easy to assume that in any anime world, she can use the Silver Crystal to purify an enemy, making her chances of survival extremely high.
However, there are anime worlds where her chance of survival is low.

Consumer electronics company Cerevo and Production I.G. have teamed up once again to reissue a 1:1 reproduction of the iconic Dominator from Psycho-Pass. The 10th-anniversary edition comes with a few upgrades, such as an improved changing mechanism and a Public Safety Bureau-sanctioned protector case.
Due to fan demand, Cerevo has announced that it's putting the highly detailed Dominator replica back into production from the fan-favorite cyberpunk anime. The screen-accurate replica had initially stopped production in 2019 due to difficulties procuring parts for the ultra-complicated transforming cyberpunk weapon, but now, its back with a few touchups.

Anime political thrillers explore themes of corruption, terrorism, organized crime, and war with suspenseful elements. Shows like Psycho-Pass and Ghost in the Shell delve into complex moral quandaries surrounding technology and what it means to be human. More grounded entries such as Grave of the Fireflies and Jin-Roh explore human suffering under failed political systems.
From feudal land disputes to conspiracies about virus-infected cyborg terrorists, politics drive the narrative of some of the most thrilling anime. International relations, elections, and human rights are inescapable topics in 2024, which is daunting and confusing. It's sometimes difficult to understand why politics matter, or how the voice of one person can bring about change in a world, but anime political thrillers illustrate the dangers of political apathy with some very bleak outcomes, and inspire activism in the most apolitical of people.

The threat of artificial intelligence has evolved from a radical science-fiction fantasy into a very real concern that continues to change the world with each passing day. Technology and entire industries are being redefined by mankind’s growing reliance on artificial intelligence. The prospect of a technological singularity and an A.I.-driven robot apocalypse may have seemed like cinematic make-believe back when James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd’s The Terminator was released in 1984. However, four decades later, techno-armageddon feels more plausible than ever, and it’s the perfect time to revisit a franchise that’s as totemic as Terminator.
There have been Terminator comics, video games, and even a series of novels, but it has proven to be a challenge to properly cultivate the right cyberpunk dystopian energy that’s become synonymous with the franchise. Mattson Tomlin can’t quite believe that he’s here, sitting in the Netflix offices talking about his soon-to-be-released Terminator anime with Production I.G.
“It started with a phone call out of the blue,” he recalls. “I was directing my movie Mother/Android, which is also about another robot apocalypse.” The film takes from Tomlin’s own experience as an adoptee and has what he calls “a completely different emotional tenor” than Terminator, but that didn’t stop him from comparing the two.
Tomlin’s remit was simple: craft an animated TV show made with Netflix and their partners Production I.G, the famed Japanese animation studio behind hits such as Ghost in the Shell and Psycho-Pass. It was then that the writer/director had a realization. “Oh, it’s gonna be a very different mode than the $200 million blockbusters they’ve been making.” The only story...

Anime is not just about sunshine and rainbows, it is dark, it is gory and it can question existence as a whole. Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Paprika, and much other older anime are only proof that this darkness is not new. So mangas and other works that are now part of the dark shonen trio and more only had their paths paved because of the existence of these more foundational animes.

It is only because of these anime and mangas that others also came into being. Some even take direct inspiration from them. One such gem happens to be Psycho-Pass. Terminator Zero takes place in 1997, connecting to the original Judgment Day date in Terminator 2. Production I.G, known for Ghost in the Shell: Sac, is behind Terminator Zero. Like Sac for Ghost in the Shell, Terminator Zero could be a great addition to the franchise.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about Netflixs upcoming Terminator show, but one 22-year-old sci-fi anime series might be the biggest one. Despite the uncertainty regarding Terminator 7, the franchise will continue soon with a Netflix original animated series. After a series of disappointing Terminator movies, a return to the small screen 15 years after The Sarah Connor Chronicles cancelation may be exactly what the franchise needs.
Timothy Olyphant will voice the Terminator in Terminator Zero, which will take place in 1997. Terminator Zeros timeline matches the original Judgment Day date from Terminator 2, a promising connection between the show and the sagas best movie.

Suicide Squad Isekai, marking Eri Osada’s directorial debut, is DC’s first opportunity to step into the world of anime, something Marvel finds itself having indulged in years ago. There are not many characters who have left an impression on the world as big as Heath Ledger did when he played the character of Joker in Dark Knight. The infamous villain has also made his way into the anime world, as he served as an inspiration for an underrated villain called Shogo Makishima from the popular crime thriller series Psycho-Pass.
Psycho-Pass | Production I.G.
Psycho-Pass revolves around an organization called the Sibyl System that can quantify the criminality within any individual and store that data to analyze and keep the peace of the world intact. However, there are people who do not agree with their methods and try to end their “tyranny,” and one of them is Shogo Makishima, the main antagonist of season 1.
In an interview, the director of the series, Naoyoshi Shiotani, once revealed that the character of Makishima is inspired by Ledger’s Joker, and he...
