Star Wars: Detours

'Detours' Makes Surprising Appearance Star Wars Celebration a Decade After Cancelation
Image
After more than a decade, one of the lost Star Wars projects that will probably never be seen by anyone has received a surprising acknowledgment from Lucasfilm as they celebrated 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation. The project in question is the animated comedy series Star Wars: Detours, which was created by the team who brought the world Robot Chicken but was never released despite almost 40 episodes being completed and dozens of other scripts being written.

Detours’ surprising reappearance came thanks to a small reference in a poster released by Lucasfilm which incorporates characters from their many animated shows and movies, including those from The Clone Wars and Rebels, and, somehow, Detours. Fans of the world’s biggest franchises always love a good Easter egg or two making an appearance, and the poster offered up one of the most obscure of any Star Wars references you could name by including a very...

Unreleased Star Wars Comedy Acknowledged by Lucasfilm for the First Time in Over a Decade
Image
2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation, and the company commemorated its anniversary with a new poster, which was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration in Shiba, Japan. While the poster mostly celebrates their successful projects, there's also a hidden reference to a Star Wars project that will probably never see the light of day. Star Wars: Detours, an animated comedy series from the Robot Chicken team, is referenced on the poster, making it the first time it's been officially acknowledged in years.

The poster features characters from all of Lucasfilm Animation's popular Star Wars series, from The Clone Wars to Rebels to Resistance, but appropriately enough for this weekend, there's a hidden Easter egg for one of the most obscure Star Wars animated series. If you look closely in the bottom right corner of the poster, you'll see a Stormtrooper with a giant head and comical goggle-eyes, taken directly from the long-lost animated series.

How George Lucas Felt About Robot Chicken's Star Wars Sketches On Adult Swim
Image
Adult Swim was founded on the tenet of delivering transgressive animated and live-action media to fill the void on Cartoon Network after kids went to sleep. If you were to compile a handful of shows that serve as a pillar of the late night programming block, "Robot Chicken" would undoubtedly be one of them. The stop-motion animated sketch show would present over 11 minutes of pure, unfiltered chaos using action figurines, dolls and an assortment of toys to lampoon all manner of pop culture. Very little was off limits after 11:30pm.

As someone who initially caught the show by accident after staying up late to watch episodes of "Family Guy," it's crazy to see the kind of legacy it's had across 11 seasons. There are a plethora of memorable sketches that have become mainstays of pop culture, such as a gummy bear getting caught in a bear trap, "Beavis and Butthead" joining the "Teen Titans,...

What Happened to Zachary Levi?
Image
An insider at The Hollywood Reporter, who I am suuuuure can be trusted 100%, recently informed the world that actor Zachary Levi was disappointed and “bitter” that he didn’t rise to Chris Evans or The Rock level of stardom after Shazam. Nobody can be sure if these were his true feelings, but to many, the science has been settled, and this is how he feels. So the dude became a Robert F Kennedy Jr. fan, which resulted in a Trump endorsement and running away from… or rather, escaping, LA. He now spends his time on a ranch in Texas, where, apparently, he is going to focus on making faith-based films. So, did they cancel Zachary Levi, or did they set him free?

As an actor, his silliness is always believable, especially when he pretty much plays himself, a lovable man-child who can do action scenes, like in the hilarious show Chuck.

Community Movie Release Schedule Teased by Joel McHale
Image
Joel McHale, a lead for all six seasons of the show Community, has provided an update on the long-awaited movie, which is now likely delayed to mid-to-late 2025 or early 2026. Despite previous reports and social media problems, Joel McHale blames his schedule for the delay, not Donald Glover. The movie is completely financed though. Most of the original cast, except Chevy Chase, will return for the film.

The anticipated Community movie has been given the green light... now, it's just a matter of filming it. During a recent interview with GQ, Joel McHale provided a timeline for production. While Community fans are eager to see the beloved sitcom fulfill its "six seasons and a movie" prophecy, we'll be waiting a bit longer, either near the last quarter of 2025 or early 2026. There were hopes the movie would go into production this year, but McHale shares that won't happen:

"Oh, well, it hasn't been shot yet.

Star Wars' Old Canon System Reveals The Best Way To Explore The Franchise
Image
Star Wars canon has evolved significantly, but the old canon system is still a useful guide for exploring the franchise, offering a clear path to follow in understanding the depths of the Star Wars universe. The old canon hierarchy allows newcomers to begin with the movies, then move on to the TV shows, and finally explore other mediums, such as books and video games, while ensuring clarity on what is considered official canon. While Disney simplified the canon system by rebranding the Expanded Universe as "Legends," the old canon hierarchy still provides a template for understanding the franchise and the relationship between different stories in the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars canon has changed considerably, but the old canon system is still the best way to explore the franchise. With so many stories in every medium, Star Wars has become a trailblazing transmedia franchise that goes far beyond the movies and TV shows.

Producers on Expanding a Legacy in Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai
Image
After being essentially dormant since 1990, the Gremlins franchise is back with Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. A prequel to the original 1984 film, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai follows a young Sam Wing and tells the story of his first meeting with the adorable Gizmo. The series was produced by Amblin Television, with Steven Spielberg reprising his role in the original films as executive producer.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai was also created with the help of showrunner Tze Chun, executive producer Brendan Hay, and consulting producer Joe Dante, who directed the original Gremlins and its follow-up, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Chun’s previous work includes the hit Fox series Gotham, and Hay was head writer on the infamously unreleased Star Wars: Detours. Together, the creative team behind Gremlins: The New Batch was able to preserve what was unique about the original films while still expanding the lore of the...

What Ahmed Best Has Done Since Playing Jar Jar Binks
Image
This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4.Star Wars veteran Ahmed Best has returned to the franchise once again, but the actor has had many other notable roles since playing Jar Jar Binks in the prequel trilogy. Best appeared as Kelleran Beq in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4 "The Foundling," the Jedi Master who saved Grogu during Order 66, and this isn't the first time Best has played the character. Kelleran Beq previously appeared on Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge, a children's game show where Ahmed Best served as the host. Best also stated that Kelleran Beq was related to Achk Med-Beq, the character he briefly portrayed in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones.

Of course, Ahmed Best's role as Jar Jar Binks will always be considered the actor's starring role, despite how it was initially received. Best later opened up about how the overwhelming dislike towards...

George Lucas Based Star Wars' Dexter Jettster On A Legendary Character Actor
Image
Looking over George Lucas' filmography, one can find no films set in the present day. Indeed, only one of Lucas' feature films is set in the future, and his "Thx 1138" is a dystopian hellscape of corporate control and utter emotionlessness. His other five directorial efforts are all set in the past, where youth was enjoyable and heroes existed in distant galaxies (even if "American Graffiti" was set just a decade before its release date). The past was bright. It's the future we have to be suspicious of.

Lucas once said that he was influenced by Arthur Lipsett's 1964 short film "21-87," a heady, abstract film about how humanity has reached an inflection point, and that society is now officially primed for collapse. This film, however obscure, offers a handy primer on Lucas' entire body of work. If there is a hero's journey to be had, it belongs in the ancient world.

David Lynch and Seth Green in Robot Chicken (2005)
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, "Robot Chicken" creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich were working on "Star Wars Detours." Similar to their fan-favorite stop motion animated sketch show on Adult Swim, they were taking one of the biggest franchises in all of pop culture and telling the story of what happened in the "Star Wars" universe between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy through an over-the-top and goofy lens.

While franchise stars like Ahmed Best, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Daniels were returning to voice their legendary characters, the rest of the voices were provided...

Star Wars Detours Will Probably Never Get Released, Seth Green Explains Why
Image
Star Wars Detours is perhaps one of the holy grails of unreleased media relating to a galaxy far, far away. The show was announced nearly a decade ago, and nearly 40 episodes are complete. Yet, it has never seen the light of day. And Seth Green, one of the co-creators behind the animated series, has explained why that is.

Right before Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, Lucasfilm Animation partnered with Seth Green and Matt Senreich, of Robot Chicken fame, for Star Wars Detours. It was announced at Star Wars Celebration and had a lot going for it. George Lucas was working in close collaboration on the series, and it even had a trailer. But once the Disney purchase happened, things change. The direction of the franchise changed. And Detours has been collecting dust ever since. In a new interview, Green addressed the status of the show, and it's not promising.

Star Wars Detours: 10 Things Fans Never Knew About The Unaired Series
Star Wars: Detours
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the first official parody of the Skywalker saga nearly debuted on Disney Xd. Presented at Star Wars Celebration VI in 2012, Star Wars: Detours was a CGI animated series created by George Lucas, and promised to be an action-packed farcical romp through the Star Wars Universe during the time period between the Prequel Trilogy and the Original Trilogy.

These days, fans have dramatic series like The Mandalorian to fill in that gap, and perhaps the serious tone was better for the franchise once Disney purchased Lucasfilm, but ever since an episode of Detours leaked to Reddit, the Star Wars community has been clamoring for more information about the comedy series.

The Trademark For That Star Wars: Detours Series From The Robot Chicken Guys Has Been Renewed
Remember that animated Star Wars series from the Robot Chicken team, Star Wars: Detours? Well, Lucasfilm has renewed the trademark. Why? I have no idea, but I hope it means that one day it will see the light of day! If you need a reminder of what the series is about, here's the synopsis:

Star Wars Detours is an animated comedy that explores what daily life is like in a galaxy far, far away. There are no Empires striking back or attacking clones here. Instead, Star Wars Detours focuses on the universe’s regular folks and their everyday problems… which, to be fair, do frequently involve famous bounty hunters, crazed Ewoks, and even a Dark Lord of the Sith.Welcome to Star Wars: Detours: the other side of the stars, between the wars.

It's been six years since Lucasfilm announced the series at Star Wars Celebration in 2012. The comedy...

Buffy meets Star Wars as Sarah Michelle Gellar joins Star Wars Rebels
It's been announced that Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has been cast in a recurring role in Season 2 of the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Executive producer/supervising director Dave Filoni said, “We're thrilled to have Sarah Michelle Gellar on board for season 2. She is a true 'Star Wars Rebels' fan and her passion undoubtedly comes through in the voice recording sessions.”

Hopefully Sarah Michelle Gellar's character arc will last for many episodes, because selling the long-term emotional resonance of the title character's ongoing struggles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the key strengths of her iconic seven-year performance as Buffy Summers. And with all new Star Wars (from Star Wars Rebels onwards) said to be inter-connected in story terms, who knows what other instalments of the franchise the character could appear in?

(Of course, depending on acting availability, there's always the possibility...

41 cancelled Star Wars projects
Various Star Wars movies, games and TV shows have been canned over the years. The Force was not strong with these...

The Star Wars universe is a dangerous place. For example, ‘man walks into a bar’ gags in Mos Eisley tend to end with unwarranted threats, droid racism, limbs being chopped off, impromptu deaths or – worst of all – rigorous re-editing.

Until the recent Disney buy-out, the world created by George Lucas was just as treacherous for seemingly-exciting projects. Lucasfilm/LucasArts, for a time, became notorious for the number of cancellations under its belt, with films, TV shows and game ideas constantly being chucked out at various stages of their development.

But when did the term ‘countless’ ever stop us trying to count things? Never, that’s when. So we donned a pointy-hooded robe and scoured the desert wilderness of the internet to bring you what we hope is a complete...

Update on the Star Wars: Detours Animated Series
Seth Green has offered an update on the Star Wars: Detours animated series he was working on. After Disney bought Lucasfilm the series was put on hold, and we've been waiting to see what its fate will be. It sounds like the series will eventually see the light of day, we just have to be patient. The actor also reveals that they have 39 completed episodes sitting on the shelf and another 62 scripts ready to go into production. Here's what Green had to say in a Reddit Q&A,

"So there’s actually been quite a bit of talk about this, but Detours is just on hold currently. We have 39 finished episodes and around 62 finished scripts. But that entire show was created before the decision to make more Star Wars movies, so our show (which was created by George Lucas) is an animated sitcom in the world of Star Wars, so...

'Buffy''s Oz And Dawn Lock Lips In Exclusive 'Sexy Evil Genius' Clip
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy contre les vampires (1997)
If you've ever wanted to see Oz (the werewolf) and Dawn (the Key) from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" making out, then we've got something extra special for you!

If you're like us, you find the whole idea kind of distasteful. Even though Seth Green and Michelle Trachtenberg's stints on "Buffy" did not overlap, Oz and Dawn snogging just seems... wrong.

But we believe in Seth and Michelle and fully support their endeavors (we especially lament the fact that we might not get to see Seth's "Star Wars: Detours" for a long, long time). So let's try to put the icky feelings aside and enjoy this exclusive clip from the crime thriller "Sexy Evil Genius."

"Sexy Evil Genius," which also stars Katee Sackhoff, William Baldwin and Harold Perrineau, will be available on DVD, VOD and digital download on April 9th.

Lucasfilm Cancels Star Wars: Clone Wars – Completes Cartoon Network Sweep
Cartoon Network lost another established winner Monday after Lucasfilm pulled the plug on Star Wars: Clone Wars.

StarWars.com released this statement announcing that they’re not producing any new episodes for Cartoon Network. Lucasfilm has also postponed the animated comedy series, Star Wars: Detours that was being developed by the Robot Chicken crew of Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, and Todd Grimes. Now that Episodes VII-ix is in full swing, it looks like everything else is taking the back seat.

Clone Wars Supervising Director Dave Filoni had this to say to Clone Wars fans:

Editor’S Pick: Young Justice Postmortem Regrets

“It’s not over yet, in fact the best is yet to come, we have some of the most exciting, most important story arcs still coming your way. Now, what could there be left to tell? Diehard fans of the series know there are still some gaps in there,...

'Star Wars' TV massacre! Lucasfilm cancels 'Clone Wars,' indefinitely postpones 'Detours'
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in La Guerre des étoiles (1977)
The Star Wars universe is moving forward into a brave new era, and that means it’s time for a good old-fashioned brand scrub. Following the news that newly-Disneyfied Lucasfilm is delaying the 3D re-release of Episodes II and III, the company announced today that they are ending production of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Cartoon Network series that spent five seasons earning raves — raves that were all variations of “Well, at least it’s better than the last few movies.”

Supervising Director Dave Filoni promises that the team is still working on additional Clone Wars story arcs, but...

New Clip from Star Wars: The Clone Wars Marks Coming to an End; Seth Green’s Star Wars: Detours Indefinitely Postponed
This is a sad, sad day for fans of Star Wars animated franchise title, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Namely, it looks like Lucasfilm has plans to shut down the series that had a successful five-season run. No new episodes will be produced for Cartoon Network, but some story arcs are being developed and will be available elsewhere as bonus material (I’m guessing that refers to the ‘missing two episodes of the final season – every season so far had 22 episodes, while this last one has twenty). No sixth season for ‘Star Wars: Clone Wars’
After George Lucas sold his Star Wars universe to Disney, many projects outside the movie franchise were left open-ended, awaiting the fate of the new masters at the House of Mouse.

One high profile animated series was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was produced for The Cartoon Network. The series was in production of its fifth season when the sale went through, and many fans have speculated what would happen to it after it ended its run this March.

Now we’ve got confirmation that the Clone Wars series will not return for a sixth season. Also, another animated series announced before the sale, a comedy created by Robot Chicken actor Seth Green called Star Wars: Detours, will never get off the ground.

Despite the end of the always creative Star Wars: Clone Wars series, some story arcs, however, are being developed and will be available elsewhere as bonus material.

Heroes Of The Year: 'Avengers' Director Joss Whedon
Throughout the week, we'll be presenting the Heroes of the Year, our list of individuals who made a major impact on the comic book movie community in 2012.

Our final hero of the year is the director behind the most successful comic book adaptation of all time: Joss Whedon. Honoring him is one of Whedon's frequent collaborators, Jane Espenson, co-creator of the web series "Husbands," among other projects.

Being asked about the impact Joss Whedon has had on comic book movies is like being asked about the impact the moon landing had on moon exploration. What Joss did with comic book movies in "The Avengers" is the same thing he did with teen horror in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and space opera in "Firefly."

Joss can take an alien, a god, a hero, a robot, or a fictional teenaged girl, and know what this being, in this situation, would say and do if they were real.
