It’s almost June and that means Netflix is about to give their content a refresh. Some of the notable titles leaving in June include Rain Man, Taxi Driver, and Donnie Brasco. So if you haven’t seen some of these titles, plan your nights accordingly. We of course can look forward more than a few new titles including the premiere of the Wachowskis’ show Sense8, the new season of Orange is the New Black, Nightcrawler, and Jon Stewart’s film Rosewater.

New on Netflix this June: "Sense8," the new sci-fi drama from Andy and Lana Wachowski ("The Matrix" trilogy) and "Babylon 5" creator J. Michael Straczynski, in which eight strangers suddenly find themselves mysteriously connected. Also, look for the return of Netflix original series "Orange Is the New Black" on June 12.

As for movies, you won't want to miss Jake Gyllenhaal's terrifyingly great turn in "Nightcrawler." Also new: "Life of Crime" and "Cake" with Jennifer Aniston; Philip Seymour Hoffman's last completed film, the spy thriller "A Most Wanted Man"; Gina Prince-Bythewood's acclaimed film "Beyond the Lights" starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a rising singer; not to mention the critically panned "Grace of Monaco," starring Nicole Kidman as Princess Grace.

In May we will see almost 60 titles leave Netflix, but nearly 60 titles are being added. One of the big warnings I will heed is that you’ve got until May 5 to watch Skyfall, so get on that. The Netflix original Grace & Frankie makes its debut on May 8 and stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston.

Some new titles are slated to hit Netflix next month, but things are a bit thin in the quality department. Highlights include Quentin Tarantino’s WWII saga Inglourious Basterds, Laika’s delightful The Boxtrolls, the emotional 2013 drama Fruitvale Station, and…not much else. May on Netflix brings more high-profile original series, including "Grace and Frankie," starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as two women who bond when their husbands -- Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen -- reveal they're gay and leave their wives to be together. It's from Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of "Friends."

Also new, the sci-fi mystery series "Between," in which a disease has wiped out everyone over 21. Unlike other Netflix series, "Between" will air a new episode every week for six weeks, beginning on May 21. Jennette McCurdy from "iCarly" stars.

And debuting on May 22: A comedy special from Jen Kirkman, best known for her appearances on "Chelsea Lately" and "Drunk History."

"Big Eyes"

Amy Adams won a Golden Globe for her performance as Margaret Keane, the true 1950s artist of big-eyed waif portraits, with Christoph Waltz playing her husband, Walter, who took all the credit. Tim Burton's drama was released as a digital download on April 3 but it's on DVD, Blu-ray and On Demand as of April 14. The DVD and Blu-ray releases include "The Making of Big Eyes," and the Blu-ray also includes Q&A Highlights.

Director David Cronenberg's satire of the Hollywood film industry was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the U.K. and France last year and Germany in March, but it's finally getting a U.S. release on April 14. Julianne Moore leads the dark comedy's all-star cast,...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice debuted amid much anticipation and easily grossed the weekend’s highest per-theater averages among all limited-release titles. But that didn’t mean it could match the stratospheric numbers of The Imitation Game, Birdman or The Grand Budapest Hotel, which had the year’s biggest opening weekends.

In fact, Vice didn’t even match the PTAs of P.T.A.’s previous three films, though word of mouth may give it a great high before its theatrical run is done. Among returning films, Wild covered a lot more ground in a sizable expansion that paid off with solid box office results, as did The Imitation Game, which continues to expand and thrive. And Birdman has soared past $20M in its 9th weekend, goosed by strong showings in several year-end critics polls.

Warner Bros. opened Vice in five New York and Los Angeles theaters Friday, grossing $330K.

Chicago – Along with your local library’s DVD section and equality, Antarctica remains one of the general world’s greatest oversights, even though it’s the size of a continent (because it is one). Around this time of year, the North Pole gets a huge shoutout for its mass production of brand items, but it’s the South Pole that forever remains in the shadow of everything else in the world, only mentioned in films like Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary “Encounters at the End of the World,” or that 2009 Kate Beckinsale snow thriller “Whiteout.”

As it turns out from Herzog’s doc and now first-timer Anthony Powell, there is more to Antarctica than a giant rock of frozen water. And where Herzog’s (highly recommended) documentary comes solely from his viewpoint as definitively curious outsider, this week’s release “Antarctica: A Year On Ice” by Powell presents the continent from an insider’s perspective.

The Academy has announced the 15-wide documentary shortlist and apart from one title, it's is a very high-profile group of names. At least they are if you follow the world of documentary. I had discussed with a friend recently that last year's field may go down as the greatest in the category's history, but depending on how the branch votes this year they may just surpass it. I have already seen nine of the 15 and can vouch for almost all of them. Let's take a look.

The Weinstein Company’s The Imitation Game is the big kid on the block among this holiday weekend’s batch of newcomers. The title is following in the footsteps of past TWC heavyweights The King’s Speech and The Artist, both of which opened to solid box office numbers and eventually scored Oscars for Best Picture. The distributor is expecting good numbers for Imitation Game over the Thanksgiving frame. IFC Films’ horror pic The Babadook has some good buzz heading into the weekend, though it might show its biggest heft via VOD with its day-and-date rollout. Remote Area Medical is one of those films one hopes everyone will see. Timed perfectly for this time of the year’s focus on thanks and giving, the documentary shows the underbelly of America’s healthcare crisis by way of people who provide free medical services to needy people in pop-up clinics around the country.

This weekend, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as English mathematician and WWII hero Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game," your favorite "Madagascar" minions try to stop an evil doctor and save the world in "Penguins of Madagascar," Aubrey Plaza voices the sour feline in the Lifetime TV movie "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever" on Saturday night, and the seventh and final season of "The Mentalist" kicks off this Sunday at 9 p.m.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its list of 134 film vying for the Best Feature Documentary Oscar at the 87th Annual Academy Awards in February. A number of the nonfic hopefuls have yet to get their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying releases. Those that don’t will be cut from the contention. A shortlist of 15 films will be announced in December. Oscar noms will be revealed January 15, and ABC will broadcast Hollywood’s Big Night live on February 22 from the Dolby Theatre.

Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying releases. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category's other qualifying rules in order to advance in the voting process. A shortlist of 15 films will be announced in December. Films submitted in the Documentary Feature category also may qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories. A lot of PG-13 ratings in today's bulletin, that is outside of the Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour, which scored an R rating "for language". Isn't it sort of funny how documentaries can earn R ratings for language when they are depicting real lifec That simply suggests life around all of us is R-rated. I haven't seen the film yet, but if the language being used isn't any different than the language you could hear just walking downtown in any city should it really be rated Rc I know, old argument, just so weird to see this is the world we still live in. Otherwise, it's a PG-13 for The Age of Adaline starring Blake Lively and Harrison Ford, another one for Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings starring Christian Bale, Julianne Moore's Oscar hopeful Still Alice is another and so is The Woman in Black: Angel of Death.

The third annual Sun Valley Film Festival closed this past weekend by honoring "Little Accidents" with its top Vision Award.
