'Bosch' Star Titus Welliver’s Best Picture Winner Is Still a Global Streaming Hit a Decade Later
Image
Titus Welliver recently wrapped up the final season of Bosch: Legacy on Prime Video, but another critically acclaimed project featuring Harry Bosch himself has become a global sensation on streaming charts. Welliver features alongside Ben Affleck and Bryan Cranston in Argo, the 2012 R-rated political thriller following a CIA agent who acts as a Hollywood producer to rescue six Americans from Tehran. Argo is streaming on HBO Max and Paramount+ globally, and the film is charting in the top 10 in several countries, such as Canada, Thailand, and Taiwan. In addition to winning Best Picture at the 2013 Academy Awards, Argo also boasts a “certified fresh” 96% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and 90% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. The film grossed $232 million against a $44 million reported budget.

Argo is, unfortunately, not streaming anywhere in the United States, but the film is available to rent ($3.79) or purchase ($13.59) on Prime Video, both prices which are cheaper than any standard streaming subscription.

Image
Titus Welliver is picking up the badge once again and trading one streaming service for another. The former Bosch star will move over to MGM+ to join the cast of The Westies, an upcoming crime drama led by J.K. Simmons.

The Westies is a period drama based on the real-life Irish-American gang of the same name. Set in 1980s New York City, the MGM+ series will follow mob boss Eamon Sweeney (Simmons) as he attempts to stave off the Italian mafia, infighting among his gang, and the FBI.

The plot will focus on construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in Hell's Kitchen and how the Westies gang profited from the project. Doing so requires the gang to live up to its reputation for violence as its outnumbered by the notorious Five Families.

According to Deadline, Welliver will play NYPD officer Glenn Kenan. The character is described as torn between...

Ben Affleck’s 92% Rotten Tomatoes Crime Thriller With ‘Bosch’s Titus Welliver Returns to Streaming Charts
Image
Bosch: Legacy may have wrapped up its final season on Prime Video earlier this year, but one of Titus Welliver’s older films with Ben Affleck has returned to streaming charts 15 years later. The duo stars alongside Jeremy Renner and Rebecca Hall in The Town, the classic crime thriller following Doug McRay (Affleck), a thief who falls for a hostage during one of his most daring heists. The Town is streaming on Netflix, and the film has surged into the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #7 at the time of writing. Released in 2010, The Town grossed $154 million at the global box office against a modest $37 million budget, and it earned a 92% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes as well as an 85% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

Based on the novel Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan and with a script written by Affleck, Peter Craig, and Aaron Stockard, The Town was only...

Taron Egerton Watches an Investigation Go Up in ‘Smoke’ in Exhilarating New Apple TV+ Series Trailer
Image
Last year, Taron Egerton took over Netflix with the hit movie Carry-On. This year, the British actor is diving once again into an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but this time in more understated tones. Today, Apple TV+ released the trailer for Smoke, a new investigative series that centers on an investigator who is trying to locate two serial arsonists that are wreaking fiery havoc and challenging the police. The series is set to premiere on June 27.

The trailer for Smoke suggests that the fire is one way to grab the attention of the police, but there's something else brewing that we can't quite put our finger on. This is reflected in Egerton's character, Dave Gudsen, who gets so deeply involved in the mystery that it might bring some permanent consequences for his psyche. In that scenario, it looks like police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) will be fundamental to keeping Dave grounded during the investigation.

In Five Days, ‘The Accountant 2’ Has Grossed Twice As Much as Ben Affleck’s Biggest Directorial Bomb
Image
Part of the reason why The Accountant 2 exists is that the first film, The Accountant, has developed a major cult following in the nine years since its release. Not only was it enough to spawn a sequel, unlike the recent Another Simple Favor — a follow-up to A Simple Favor — The Accountant 2 received a theatrical release. The movie debuted at the third spot domestically in its first weekend, and has already passed the $40 million mark at the global box office. While it’s still a ways away from recovering its reported budget and potentially turning a profit, The Accountant 2 has already generated twice as much as star Ben Affleck’s big-budget directorial dud Live by Night.

The gangster drama grossed around $22 million worldwide, against a reported budget of $90 million. The Accountant 2 cost around the same amount, but has already grossed $42 million worldwide in less than a week.

The Accountant Movies Are The Closest We'll Get To Ben Affleck's Solo Batman
Image
"The Accountant 2" has been filed into movie theaters across the U.S. The movie reunites director Gavin O'Connor and Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, a savant accountant and vigilante, but many (including /Film) have called this sequel an improvement over the 2016 original.

Ah, 2016. That was a lynchpin year for Ben Affleck's career, but not in a great way. He starred in three movies, none of them hits either critically or commercially. After his early 2000s rough patch, Affleck had been back on the upswing since 2006's "Hollywoodland." For the next ten years, he proved himself as a director (first with 2007's "Gone Baby Gone") and as an actor worthy of respect. When he was cast as Batman in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," it seemed like Affleck's movie star redemption was complete. Sure, Bat-fans had their doubts at first, but he was joining the superhero boom as one of the world's biggest superheroes.

Ben Affleck Netflix Thriller 'Animals' Adds Ray Fisher & More Cast Members
Image
Ben Affleck has had a busy past couple of years, directing (and having a supporting role in) the 2023 film Air and returning to the role of Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2, set for release in April. The actor/director has also established a creative partnership between his production company Artists Equity and Netflix, with the streaming platform releasing Affleck's next directorial effort, Animals. After some stalled development and changes in casting, the movie has added several new cast members to its already impressive talent roster.

A new report from Deadline has revealed that Ray Fisher, Mark Kassen, and Christopher Woodley have all joined the project, in addition to the previously announced Affleck, Gillian Anderson, Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Adriana Paz. Kassen is a multi-faceted creative, being a playwright, writer, and director, well-known for directing the 2011 independent feature Puncture, which starred Chris Evans. Woodley starred opposite...

Do Directors Get a Best Picture Bump at the Box Office for Their Next Movie? Yes and No
Image
Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.

Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.

The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.

But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

“If Scorsese can make a three-and-a-half-hour movie, I want to”: Iconic 15-Year-Old Ben Affleck Movie With the Most Iconic Heist Scene Was Almost an Erotic Thriller
Image
Ben Affleck’s Hollywood career is a fascinating case study in terms of its erratic rise and fall over nearly 3 decades. Since his Oscar-winning debut in Good Will Hunting, Affleck has been a golden property for the industry despite his intermittent stretches of bad moviemaking choices mingling with the good.

The success of Good Will Hunting and Chasing Amy was followed by a drastic downfall due to Gigli and Daredevil. This, in turn, was once again turned into a success with Gone Baby Gone, Argo, The Town, and Gone Girl before Affleck’s career fell into a rut with Batman v Superman and Live by Night.

However, the 2010 film, The Town almost turned one of Affleck’s stretches of success into a bad call for all the actors involved.

Ben Affleck Will Star With Gillan Anderson in 'Animals' Instead of Matt Damon
Image
Ben Affleck is set to embark on his next directorial project soon, doing double duty by starring in the film as well. An exclusive new report from Deadline reveals that his long-in-development Netflix thriller Animals is set to begin production soon, with Los Angeles set to serve as the location for filming as soon as the rest of the cast for the movie is rounded out. Affleck originally intended for his long-time collaborator Matt Damon to star in the project, but the constant moving of dates no longer makes the actor a viable option. Instead, Affleck has found his Matt Damon replacement... in himself.

Aside from Affleck's starring role in Animals alongside his directing duties, Deadline has also reported that Gillian Anderson has joined the project as well. However, the capacity of her role is yet unknown. Animals will be based on a script written by Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray,...

Ben Affleck, Gillian Anderson to Star in Crime Thriller ‘Animals’ for Netflix
Image
Ben Affleck’s crime thriller Animals is coming back together, this time with a new star very familiar to the filmmaker. Himself.

Matt Damon was originally on board to star in Animals, with Affleck in the director’s chair, when Netflix and Artists Equity were producing the movie a year ago. The project fell apart due to script issues, but those have since been resolved. In the meantime, however, Damon went on to sign on to star in a small movie titled The Odyssey that is being directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Christopher Nolan. Odyssey is due to begin principal photography later this month and shoot in locales around the world.

The project has been revived with Affleck still in the director’s chair. But he will now star in it as well. Gillian Anderson, the X-Files star who in recent years appeared as Margaret Thatcher in Netflix’s The Crown,...

Recasting 10 Dceu Stars In James Gunn’s DC Universe After Jason Momoa’s Lobo Casting
Image
Jason Momoa has been cast in a new DC Universe role, and that increases the chances that other Dceu stars could come back to the franchise in exciting new roles. Momoa led DC's highest-grossing film of all time, 2018's Aquaman. Due to that, it was always expected that the actor would play one of the Dcu's canon characters. As such, his return was not a surprise, but the fact that he ditched Aquaman to play Lobo was the interesting part of the announcement.

Dceu stars had already returned in James Gunn's DC Universe. However, John Cena as Peacemaker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and most of the other returning stars reprised their characters. Momoa's high-profile recast as Lobo sparks more possibilities for upcoming DC movies, as Gunn's Dcu could bring back some major Dceu stars in new roles, and the director has even talked to a few actors about such an idea.

This Ben Affleck Crime Thriller Had A Much Different Robbery In The Book
Image
Ben Affleck's career as a filmmaker and actor has become a series of rises and falls. One of his peaks was from 2007 to 2012, when he pivoted to directing, won people back, and capped it off with a Best Picture win for "Argo."

Affleck's second film is 2010's "The Town," where he plays bank robber Doug MacRay, who falls for bank teller Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall) after his crew takes her hostage during a heist. And you thought your parents had a wild "how we first met" story! The town in the title is Charlestown, a Boston neighborhood that once had a reputation for a high amount of robberies. Supporting characters include Doug's unhinged right hand James "Jem" Coughlin (Jeremy Renner), Jem's needy sister Krista (Blake Lively), and FBI Agent Adam Frawley (Jon Hamm) who thinks he's the yuppie Melvin Purvis.

"The Town" is based on the 2004 novel "Prince of Thieves" by Chuck Hogan.

The Four Best Ben Affleck Movies On Rotten Tomatoes Have One Thing In Common
Image
Film audiences may have first recognized Ben Affleck for his appearance in the 1992 film "School Ties," where he played the main sidekick of the film's central bully. In 1993, Affleck was already behind the camera as well, having made a rather notorious 16-minute short film called "I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meat Hook, and Now I Have a Three-Picture Deal at Disney." Affleck played a boorish womanizer named Shannon in Kevin Smith's 1995 comedy "Mallrats," and he teamed with Smith again in 1997 to make the stirring queer romantic drama "Chasing Amy." At the end of 1997, Affleck and his friend Matt Damon became awards darlings thanks to Gun Van Sant's "Good Will Hunting" which they both wrote and starred in.

Affleck has remained a superstar ever since, having appeared in terse studio dramas, mainstream romances, and numerous action films. He played the superheroes Daredevil and Batman and continued to work with Kevin Smith.

How Medieval Times and Spanish Romanticism Inspired the Sartorial Visuals of ‘Dune’ (Part One)

In order to deliver the 2,000 costumes – including approximately 400 specialty costumes and bespoke “stillsuits”– for Denis Villeneuve’s visually captivating and masterfully adapted sci-fi epic Dune, the director enlisted the help of costume designers Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan, whose work on the film is currently nominated at the upcoming Oscars.

With her background in art history, former fashion designer West is a four-time Academy Award nominee, whose credits include Quills, Argo and The Revenant. Having previously collaborated with West as costume supervisor on the Prohibition-era gangster drama Live by Night, Morgan’s long list of credits includes Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Man of Steel. This is Morgan’s first costume design credit on a feature – and his first Oscar nomination.

“I could barely look at him”: Sienna Miller Confessed She Had Zero Chemistry With Ben Affleck After Comparing His ‘Enormous’ Body Part That Made Things Worse
Image
Sienna Miller and Ben Affleck starred together in the 2016 film, Live By Night, which the actor himself helmed. He was riding high on the success of his Oscar-winning film Argo, but this next film proved to be a complete disaster. It took years for Affleck to take on another project as a director. Miller may have identified one of the issues which affected the emotional quality of the film. She revealed that she had zero chemistry with Affleck.

In recent years, Miller has been known for playing complex, dramatic roles in films that were well-received by critics as well as audiences. She’s playing the role of Frances Kittredge in Kevin Costner’s upcoming two-part Western drama, Horizon: An American Saga.

The Accountant 2 Won't Be The Ben Affleck Movie You Hope For - That Comes Later
Image
The Accountant 2 will give Jon Bernthal's Braxton a bigger role, and focus on his relationship with brother Christian. Director Gavin O'Connor envisions a trilogy, with The Accountant 3 being the buddy action movie fans might expect from the second entry. The odds of The Accountant 3 happening look good, as the sequel is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

There's a surprising amount of anticipation for the upcoming Ben Affleck sequel The Accountant 2, but it won't quite be the movie people are expecting. Affleck was remarkably busy during the 2010s, directing and starring in movies like Argo or Live by Night, while playing Batman multiple times in the Dcu, beginning with 2016's Batman v Superman. During this time, he also fronted The Accountant, a thriller that cast him as a criminal accountant on the autism spectrum. The movie received mixed reviews, but The Accountant was a solid hit, grossing...

The Ben Affleck Post-Oscar Movie That No One Saw (But Should)
Image
Ben Affleck has proven to be just as talented of a writer/director as he is an actor. His historical thriller Argo became a critical success and even won a trio of Academy Awards including Best Picture. And his latest directorial effort Air is receiving rave reviews - both for its portrayal of the historic deal between Nike & Michael Jordan and the fact that this is the first time Affleck is directing his longtime friend Matt Damon. But there's one Affleck film that may have slipped under people's radar: Live by Night.

Ben Affleck's New Movie Can Redeem Him 7 Years After His Failed Genre Return
Image
Ben Affleck's career has had its highs and lows, but his recent success with "Air" has left audiences interested in his next project. Affleck has lined up his next directing gig, "Animals," which will feature Matt Damon in a starring role and serve as a moment of redemption for Affleck following a previous failure. Despite the failure of "Live By Night," all signs point to "Animals" being a success and avoiding the issues of his previous crime thriller.

Ben Affleck has a new movie in development, and it can help redeem him years after a failed genre return. Affleck's career has certainly had its highs and lows, with 2023 proving to be a pivotal moment. He returned to directing with Air after six years with great acclaim, but his DC role as Batman officially came to an end. While The Flash flopped at the box office, Air was a fairly...

Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Reunite For Netflix Crime Thriller Animals
Image
In a devastating (but perhaps none too surprising) blow to Dad Cinema enthusiasts the world over, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's acclaimed true-story Nike drama "Air" was completely ignored by the Academy when Oscar nominations were announced earlier this week. However, if you were expecting the Oscar-winning duo/best buds to spend the immediate future licking their wounds and wallowing in self-pity, guess again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they've instead gone and lined up their next project together -- an original crime thriller titled "Animals," which now has Netflix backing it.

Having previously gone under working titles like "The Animals of Los Angeles" and "Be Gentlemen," the new Affleck-Damon joint will see Damon starring and Affleck directing from a script by Connor McIntyre with revisions from "Shattered Glass" and "Captain Phillips" scribe Billy Ray. The plot involves (per THR) "a mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped.

The Real-Life Inspiration for Chris Messina’s Iconic ‘Air’ Character Hasn’t Called to Yell at Him (Yet)
Image
It doesn’t take much prompting to get actor Chris Messina to list all the ways he and his “Air” character, the iconic sports agent David Falk, diverge. “I’m nothing like David Falk. He’s taller than me. He has no hair. He’s brilliant,” Messina said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “Our one similarity: we’re both from Long Island.”

But Messina’s obvious admiration for the guy — one of the primary movers of the landmark deal his client Michael Jordan struck with Nike as a rookie, a fascinating true-life story that serves as the basis of Ben Affleck’s latest film — shines through, too. As the fierce sports agent, supporting standout Messina spends most of “Air” hamming it up on the phone, negotiating deals, yelling a lot, and having a tremendous amount of fun.

“Falk can be ferocious, and there were some people that when Falk called,...

All 6 Movies Ben Affleck Directed, Ranked
Image
Ben Affleck's directorial filmography showcases his range, spanning from gritty crime dramas to action-packed blockbusters and comedies. "Live By Night" may be considered the weakest of Affleck's films, but it still offers an enjoyable popcorn movie experience, though it lacks depth and a cohesive story. "Gone Baby Gone" is considered Affleck's best work as a director, delivering a tense crime drama with disturbing precision and exploring morally ambiguous themes.

It's easy to only think of Ben Affleck as a superstar actor, but his filmography as a director has almost as wide of a variety as his roles. From his gritty performance as Batman in the Dceu to his comedic collaborations with look-alike Matt Damon, Affleck's range behind the camera spans tense dramas, action-packed blockbusters, and laugh-out-loud comedies. While his work as a writer, director, and producer might not be as prolific, it certainly bears examination as a jewel in Affleck's crowning career.

Image
The Gotham Awards have announced that actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck‘s “Air” will be honored with the Visionary Icon and Creator Tribute when awards are handed out on Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

“Air” follows Sonny Vaccaro (played by Matt Damon), the basketball talent scout for Nike who in 1984 fought to bring fledgling talent Michael Jordan onboard as a new spokesperson for the company’s basketball shoes. In addition to directing the film, Affleck has a co-starring role as Nike co-founder and CEO Phil Knight. This is the fifth feature film Affleck has helmed, following “Gone Baby Gone” (2007), “The Town” (2010), “Argo” (2012) and “Live by Night” (2016). Ben Affleck’s The Town Gets Seal of Approval from a True Heist Expert
Image
The Town strikes a remarkable balance between realism and entertainment in crime cinema, earning critical acclaim and endorsement from a former bank robber. The film's exceptional attention to detail in heist scenes sets it apart, accurately portraying tactics such as using police scanners and post-heist procedures like switching cars. Affleck's direction in The Town captures the real essence of how professional thieves operate, making it an authentic portrayal of Boston's underbelly and a cinematic masterpiece.

Realism in crime cinema is a precarious balance to strike. Overemphasis on the details may lead to a discomforting experience, whereas a lack of accuracy can jeopardize the credibility of the story. Yet, a decade after its release, Ben Affleck's gripping 2010 heist thriller The Town has struck a remarkable balance. The film has now earned not just critical acclaim but a ringing endorsement from someone who knows the real thing: former bank robber Cain Vincent Dyer.

A real life bank robber gives high marks for realism to Ben Affleck’s heist movie The Town. Ben Affleck’s Axed Batman Movie Was ‘F—ing Awesome’ and Built on 80 Years of Mythos, Says Storyboard Artist: ‘It Was the Best’
Image
Jay Oliva, a storyboard artist who worked on several DC and Warner Bros. movies such as “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Wonder Woman,” recently opened up to Inverse about Ben Affleck’s scrapped standalone Batman movie. Affleck debuted as Batman in Zack Snyder’s “Dawn of Justice” and reprised the role in “Justice League.” He was developing his own Batman movie to direct and star in before deciding to exit the role.

“I can’t really say too much other than it was fucking awesome,” Oliva told Inverse about Affleck’s Batman movie. “It was the best. It was amazing. From my understanding, there were a couple of drafts of it. When I was brought on, I don’t know whether it was the second draft or something, but it was what Geoff Johns and Ben [Affleck] had shown me.”

“I’ve worked on a lot...

Air Cast and Character Guide
Image
Air tells a captivating true story with a good sense of humor and a star-studded cast. The film is one of 2023's biggest surprises, revolving around the backstage of the ambitious partnership between the market giant Nike and the recently discovered Michael Jordan, who would eventually become one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

The film gathers all the best facts and details about the deal that would lead to a massive cultural phenomenon in the world of sports: the launching of Air Jordan. While Air remains loyal to history and the real people involved, the narrative is conducted in an easy-going fashion, immersing the audience in a world where business and sports collide. The film marks Ben Affleck's return to the director chair, seven years after his previous movie, Live By Night. While the latter met a disastrous reception among the critics and the public audience with a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes,...

New Ben Affleck Thriller's Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Almost As Bad As Justice League
Image
Ben Affleck's new thriller Hypnotic earns a Rotten Tomatoes score that is as bad as Justice League. In Hypnotic, Affleck plays protagonist Danny Rourke, a detective looking into a mystery surrounding his missing daughter. Hypnotic is directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Alica Braga (niece of legendary Brazilian actress Sonia Braga) and Jd Pardo. Despite anticipation around the movie, the reviews have been mixed to poor, adding to another collection of Ben Affleck's films that missed the mark with critics.

With Hypnotic now in theaters, the film's Rotten Tomatoes score is a rotten 39 percent, the same score that the original Justice League received in 2017. This is based on 51 reviews from critics, so the score may change slightly as more reviews are released. As of this writing, the audience score was higher, with 52 percent.

‘Air’: What are the Oscar prospects for Ben Affleck’s latest?
Image
Over Easter weekend, Amazon Studios opened Ben Affleck‘s “Air” nationwide in over 3,300 theaters after the movie received an enormous amount of buzz at its SXSW Film Festival premiere. The movie grossed over $20 million in its first five days and has now grossed over $33 million.

“Air” tells the story of how in 1984 the Nike sneaker company tried to convince 18-year-old basketball star Michael Jordan to endorse their sneakers, taking them from the company with the lowest market share to the highest.

Sole Surfer: Affleck Revisits Impetus of Landmark Shoe Line

It’s difficult to ascertain where Ben Affleck’s storytelling interests lie even as he’s slowly but surely amassed acclaim as a director over the past fifteen years. His 2012 Argo won Best Picture despite the Academy overlooking him for a nomination as director, a film much like his others, staying somewhere in the realm of glossy genre-tinged thrills such as Gone, Baby Gone (2007), The Town (2010) and Live By Night (2016). His first foray into a peripheral sports drama arrives with Air, penned by first time scribe Alex Convery, suggesting a sense of mellowing and maturation even as it aligns Affleck’s own filmmaking approaches with someone like the early bounce-arounds of James Mangold.…...

Ben Affleck’s Air Leads Right into Bizarre Origins of Space Jam Movie
Image
A little over a year after Ben Affleck mused he would never make a theatrically released movie again, and insisting he wanted to focus on non-franchise films for adult audiences, the filmmaker nonetheless enjoyed one of the happiest box office stories of 2023. To be sure, this past holiday weekend was dominated by yet another “IP movie,” as Affleck is wont to say, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, in the shadow of that film’s gargantuan $205.5 million across five days, Affleck’s own adult-skewing drama, Air, also dominated the court in its own league, grossing $20.2 million over five days.

Not bad for a movie that’s produced by one of the biggest streamers around, Amazon Studios, and which true to Affleck’s word wasn’t even originally intended to reach the big screen. In fact, Air didn’t pivot to a theatrical release until post-production when Amazon realized how well...

Ben Affleck's Air Survived The Super Mario Bros. – And That's Great News For Hollywood
Image
Ben Affleck hasn't directed a film since 2016's misfire "Live by Night," but the filmmaker is back with "Air" and, despite heavy competition from "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," it's clear that audiences were very much into having him back behind the camera. The film, which is all about how Michael Jordan's legendary partnership with Nike came to be, is an R-rated, adult-focused drama and the exact type of movie that has struggled at the box office since the pandemic began. But Amazon Studios and Affleck prevailed.

While "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" topped the charts handily with a stellar, record-breaking $377 million global opening, "Air" quietly did pretty well for itself. The sports industry biopic pulled in $14.46 million over the three-day stretch, very nearly slipping into the number three spot ahead of "Dungeons & Dragons." The film opened on Wednesday of last week and, over the full five-day stretch,...

UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ smashes animation record

Busy week sees 19 releases, including Ben Affleck’s ‘Air’, and ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’.

Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie will smash the record for widest UK-Ireland opening by an animated film this weekend, starting its run in 721 sites.

That is 31 sites above the 690-site opening for the previous record holder, Disney’s Toy Story 4 from 2019.

Adapted from the best-selling Nintendo game series, The Super Mario Bros. Movie tells the story of two Italian-American siblings trying to get their plumbing business off the ground, who are accidentally drawn into a battle to save a magical land called the Mushroom Kingdom.
