For this installment of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha refocuses on Ritesh Batra’s Photograph.
After The Lunchbox, why did Ritesh Batra let us down so miserably with Photograph? Think about it. It had everything going for it. A director whose first film The Lunchbox became the most beloved Indian film since Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali and who has since then worked with international icons like Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling.
Photograph featured a cast and a lead pair that looked tempting if not entirely inviting, and most of all, it was meant to be the Nri director’s homage to the city he loves the most Mumbai.
But Mumbai in Batra’s Photograph looks like a city that is losing its sparkle and drowning in its dreams. The fact that the characters are flat and the presentation is listless could have something to...

Disney That was just one of Jackie’s various attempted careers after leaving her job at Wellman Plastics before opening The Lunch Box with her sister Roseanne (Roseanne Barr). French sales outfit Loco Films has acquired international rights to “Tiger’s Pond” (Vagachipani), the latest film championed by celebrated Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap. The dark crime drama, directed by emerging filmmaker Natesh Hegde, is set to make its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival’s Forum strand.
Kashyap, whose producing credits include festival favorites like “The Lunchbox,” backs the project alongside Singapore-based producer Jeremy Chua (Cannes winner “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell”) and producer Ranjan Singh (Cannes selection “Kennedy”). The film charts the collision course between a feudal businessman attempting to manipulate local elections and a defiant outcast villager, promising “rapturous textures and treacherous depths” in its exploration of rural power dynamics.
The cast includes Dileesh Pothan, Achyut Kumar, Natesh Hegde, Gopal Hegde and Sumitra.

Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap has thrown his weight behind “Aakhri Ride” (The Last Ride), set to feature as one of the market picks at the upcoming Clermont-Ferrand short film market.
The film follows Aman, a Mumbai ride-share driver racing to secure dowry money for his sister’s wedding, whose night takes an unexpected turn when he picks up a mysterious passenger – a Chudail (demonic witch). The supernatural encounter forces him to confront deeper truths about urban survival and morality.
Several films directed by Kashyap have played at Cannes, including “Kennedy” (2023), “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). In addition, several films produced by him have made it to the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).

Irrfan Khan liked Airlift so much and had to opt himself out of the movie for this reason. Read on to learn more about this incident. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Irrfan Khan was one of the finest actors the Indian film industry has ever witnessed. From Hindi films like The Lunchbox and Hindi Medium to Hollywood projects like Life of Pi and The Amazing Spider-Man, Khan proved himself in every corner of the world.
With such great skills, he was offered many roles throughout his career, some of which he had to turn down due to some reason or another. One such film is the blockbuster Airlift.
The 2016 film Airlift, directed by Raja Krishna Menon, is celebrated as one of Akshay Kumar’s career milestones. However, the late actor Irrfan Khan was initially considered for the lead role. On Irrfan’s birth anniversary, producer Nikkhil Advani shared an intriguing anecdote about...

After The Conners failed to give Darlene’s daughter a meaningful purpose, Happy’s Place makes this mistake worse with Emma Kenney’s upcoming guest role in the sitcom. The Conners season 7 will arrive in March 2025, and the six-episode “Farewell event” will bring the Roseanne franchise to an end after 36 years. The large cast of The Conners means it will be tough for the series to give everyone a perfect ending, but some supporting characters need a significant role more than others. Chief among them is Emma Kenney’s Harris, first seen in the final seasons of Roseanne’s original run.

When her older self was introduced in Roseanne season 10, Harris was little more than a hackneyed Gen Z stereotype.

Although The Conners season 7 will end the spinoff for good, I fear the outing won’t have enough screen time to properly wrap up the entire Roseanne franchise. The Conners season 7 promises to be the show’s final outing, bringing the 36-year-old sitcom franchise to a close in March 2025. According to TVLine, The Conners season 7 will be a “Six-episode farewell event” that brings back Becky, Jackie, Darlene, Dan, Harris, Mark, and Beverly-Rose for one more story. Already, I’m skeptical about the prospect of season 7 providing a meaningful ending to the franchise as a whole.

Payal Kapadia’s film, among the best reviewed of the year, was snubbed by India for an Oscar selection. Its distributor has something to say about that and is campaigning for other key categories.

Indian powerhouse producer Guneet Monga Kapoor has boarded Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai’s short film “Anuja” as executive producer. The film recently qualified for Academy Awards consideration after winning Best Live Action Short at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival.
The film centers on nine-year-old Anuja, who must choose between education and factory work alongside her sister – a decision that will shape both their futures. Adding authenticity to the narrative, lead actress Sajda Pathan draws from her own experiences of surviving on the streets of old Delhi before finding support through the Salaam Baalak Trust (Sbt), a nonprofit founded by Mira Nair’s family.
The project brings together an unique creative team. Writer-director Graves, a philosopher-turned-filmmaker with a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, collaborated with his wife Mattai, an established visual artist whose works are featured in major museums including Crystal Bridges and the Denver Art Museum.

Although The Conners is primarily a comedy, Roseanne's spinoff has some moments of truly moving character development. Despite Roseannes hated final season, the family comedy was one of the most fondly remembered sitcoms of the 90s. Roseannes story of a relatable working-class family struggling to get by resonated with viewers throughout the late 80s and into the 90s, and it was the shows combination of warm drama and sharp wit that made Roseanne a huge hit. As such, it was no surprise when Roseanne received a revival in 2017. What was surprising was what happened after Roseanne season 10 aired.

Oscar watchers know you can’t count on any country’s Oscar selection committee to do the smart thing. India’s track record is particularly abysmal.
Every year, the Film Federation of India (Ffi) assembles a jury of industry insiders to pick the film to best represent India at the Oscars. The country hasn’t had an Oscar nomination since “Lagaan” in 2002. India overlooked such lauded films as “The Lunchbox” and “Rrr,” and has now snubbed the first Indian film to play in the Cannes competition in 30 years as well as the first film in the history of India to win Cannes’ second prize, the Grand Prix: Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light”.
The film, about the lives of two Mayalali nurses living in Mumbai, even landed on France’s shortlist for the Oscar; France ultimately submitted another Cannes prize-winner, “Emilia Pérez.” India selected instead Kiran Rao’s...

Each year, as fall approaches, India’s famously unpredictable Oscar committee takes center stage to pick their candidate in a process as dramatic as any Bollywood blockbuster.
As always, the influential body behind the committee, the Film Federation of India (Ffi), brought together a special jury of industry veterans to sift through the year’s cinematic offerings to choose the one film that will represent India. But while the country boasts the world’s most prolific film industry, its track record in the international feature film race has fallen short with many missed opportunities. The most notorious example is Ritesh Batra’s “The Lunchbox” which was not selected in 2013 despite having earned widespread critical laurels.
Some eyebrows were also raised when global hit “Rrr” wasn’t picked as India’s Oscar candidate in 2022. The Ffi saved face, nevertheless, after its official submission, Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show,” made the international features shortlist.

Although all six seasons of The Conners have their high and low points, a ranking of the Roseanne spinoffs outings uncovers a surprising trend. The Conners season 7 will be the shows final outing, but the upcoming sitcom season is not just ending the working-class family comedys seven-year run. The Conners season 7 also brings Roseannes story to an end 36 years after the groundbreaking sitcom first aired in 1988. Roseannes original run lasted nine seasons from 1988 until 1997 before the series was brought back for a one-season revival in 2017. Roseannes revival was a ratings success.

While Roseannes spinoff The Conners will end with its seventh season, season 6s weirdest subplot makes it hard to see how the show will handle one character. The Conners has a large cast of characters, most of whom also appeared in the shows predecessor, Roseanne. Roseanne was a successful family sitcom that ran from 1988 until 1997, only to be revived in 2017. While Roseannes revival was a ratings success, series star Roseanne Barrs racist tweets saw her fired before the series was renewed. Roseanne was killed off-screen, and the series became The Conners, focusing on her surviving family.
Now, The Conners season 7 is set to wrap up the familys story for good. The Conners has added a slew of new supporting stars since Roseannes exit in 2018, among them Darlenes love interest Ben, Beckys partner Tyler, and Dans second wife Louise. However, the series still centers most of its storyline around members of the titular family.

The late Martin Mull's character Leon Carp in Roseanne was a significant LGBTQ+ representation in TV history. The Conners season 7 must acknowledge Leon's legacy and contribution to the show's lineup for years. Mark's role in The Conners could be impacted by learning about Leon, connecting the two characters via their shared experiences.
The late, great Martin Mull's Roseanne character Leon Carp was a pivotal part of TV history, and I hope The Conners season 7 acknowledges this. Looking back on Roseannes original run, Im often struck by how much the sitcoms story of a working-class family struggling to get by still resonates today. The reason that The Conners cast of characters is mostly composed of Roseanne alumni is that few of the shows heroes managed to leave Lanford despite their grand ambitions, and realistic everyday struggles were the reason they stuck around.
Roseanne handled unemployment, unplanned pregnancy, addiction, financial struggles,...

The Conners sometimes betrays the spirit of Roseanne, with lazy Gen Z stereotype subplots. The show's large cast mostly feels true to their old selves, with some episodes reminiscent of Roseanne's revival. Jackie's decision to give up The Lunchbox in season 6 was a sign of growth and maturity, and the show's focus on real-life working-class issues sets it apart from other sitcoms.
When The Conners season 6 ended one of the sitcom spinoffs longest running storylines, I was relieved to see this Roseanne call-back finally wrapped up. The Conners is a successful Roseanne followup, but the show sometimes betrays the spirit of its predecessor. I was disappointed when the spinoff focused subplots on Harriss entitlement, a lazy stereotype about members of Gen Z that betrayed its usual warm attitude toward its heroes. Similarly, I wasnt impressed with season 6 largely forgetting Louises school board campaign even though this was the sort of...

The Conners season 6 let down Harris yet again, prioritizing older characters over her development. Harris started as a Gen Z stereotype in Roseanne's revival, and The Conners failed to improve her arc. The Conners season 7 has a chance to fix Harris's character arc by giving her more focus and depth.
Despite Roseannes spinoff promising more for her in season 6, I was disappointed to see that The Conners let down its most underrated supporting star yet again in this outing. When I first started watching The Conners, I was impressed by the way that Roseannes spinoff juggled its large cast. The Conners cast of characters extends into double digits and, with Roseanne dead, the show has no obvious star to center its sitcom storylines around. Certain episodes prioritized Dan and Jackie, while others focused on Becky and Darlene. Meanwhile, DJ and Louise took precedence in the remaining outings.

Tran Anh Hung’s simmering gastro-romance is the latest dish in a cinematic feast ranging from The Godfather to The Lunchbox
The term “gastroporn” got thrown around a lot when The Taste of Things was in cinemas recently, but I’m not sure it’s quite right for Tran Anh Hung’s sumptuous culinary romance, seductive as all the cookery on display is. Though it has many a languid, exquisitely lit pan over the finished dishes created by Benoît Magimel’s 19th-century gourmet – including a giant, glistening vol-au-vent that I’ve been thinking about for months – it’s less about money shots than it is about foodie foreplay. The film’s greatest pleasures are in its extended sequences of preparation and process; the silently, adoringly intuitive collaboration between Magimel and Juliette Binoche’s fellow cook; the thrill of watching experts at work. The Conners season 6 dropped storylines for Harris and Louise, continuing the trend of sidelining characters. Season 7 of The Conners may reverse this trend, focusing on characters like Harris and Louise. The show struggles with managing its large cast, leading to underdeveloped characters and dropped storylines.
While The Conners season 6 has a lot of storylines to cover, two of the plots that Roseanne’s spinoff has seemingly abandoned follow an unfortunate trend. The Conners has a lot of characters to keep track of and the series has made some alterations to its cast as a result. Since Roseanne’s revival became The Conners by killing off its titular heroine in 2018, the spinoff has focused on Becky, Darlene, and DJ, their father Dan and aunt Jackie, Darlene’s children Harris and Mark, DJ’s daughter Mary, and his wife Geena. As the show continued, more characters joined the cast.

Almost exactly a year ago, Jio Studios had launched a slate of 100 new films and TV shows. Those efforts have now come to fruition. 2023 saw Marathi-language “Baipan Bhaari Deva” and “Jhimma 2,” Bollywood films, Shah Rukh Khan’s “Dunki” and Vicky Kaushal’s “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” and Mithun Chakraborty-starring Bengali-language film “Kabuliwala” become major hits. 2024 has already delivered Bollywood hits “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,” “Article 370” and “Shaitaan,” with Kiran Rao’s 2023 Toronto-playing feminist romp “Laapata Ladies” also scoring in its theatrical release.
“We are the only studio to have seven hits in a row. We hit a purple patch, like how [cricket Goat Sachin] Tendulkar was hitting his centuries,” Jyoti Deshpande, president, media and content business, Ril, told Variety. “We’ve always been champions of stories,...

The Conners would be better going back to Harris's character development and ambition in managing The Lunchbox in season 6. The show would undo Harris' progress by sending her to college, which would sideline her from the family business. Harris attending culinary school could enhance her storyline and skillset while maintaining her connection to The Lunchbox.
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for The Conners season 6, episode 6.
While The Conners season 6 gave Darlene’s daughter Harris a new ambition, the Roseanne spinoff would be better off going back to her original plan. The large cast of characters in The Conners means that the series only gets to focus on one or two stars per episode. The first few episodes of season 6 didn’t feature Darlene's son Mark, while Katey Sagal’s Louise wasn’t seen in episodes 5 or 6. In an extreme case of this approach, season 5 saw The Conners say goodbye to...

Jackie's ownership of The Lunchbox was no longer fulfilling for her, and she handed over the reins to Harris. Harris's new role running The Lunchbox gives her a meaningful storyline and allows her to showcase her determination. The decision to pass the restaurant to Harris is a welcome change, as Jackie's storyline had been lacking focus in previous seasons.
While The Conners season 6 premiere gave Jackie a brutal surprise, the Roseanne spinoff spun this plot into a huge opportunity for one undervalued character. When Jackie took over The Lunchbox in The Conners season 2, this seemed like a huge new opportunity for Roseanne’s sister. After the character spent decades struggling with jobs as varied as police work, truck driving, and a position in the local plastics factory, Jackie finally had a role that she truly wanted. When her mother Bev refused to hand her the restaurant’s deed, Jackie fought...

Ben's limited role in The Conners season 6 premiere draws attention to his lack of relevance in the series, as his character is mainly portrayed as Darlene's love interest. Ben's presence in the episode seems forced and unnecessary, especially considering practical issues such as his ownership of a hardware store with Dan, making it unlikely for him to be free at the same time as the Conners. The show dropped Ben's strong character arc as Mark's guardian in the season 6 premiere, limiting Ben's relevance and potentially missing an opportunity to explore their shared story further.
While Jay R. Ferguson’s Ben got some of the best lines in The Conners season 6 premiere, his part in the episode still drew attention to his limited role in the Roseanne spinoff. When Ben was introduced to Roseanne’s spinoff The Conners, he was a magazine editor who often butted heads with the sardonic Darlene.

Bev's potential death in The Conners season 6 could bring back the character Leon Carp, who played a significant role in the original series. Bev's deceit about Leon's share of the restaurant may have hidden his ownership, and her death could reveal the truth. Leon's return would be significant for Lgbtqia+ representation and provide an opportunity for him to meet Darlene's son Mark.
Since The Conners season 6 seems set to feature a major Roseanne character's death, the spinoff is almost certain to finally bring back a fan-favorite figure as a result. Estelle Parsons’s Bev played a pivotal role in Roseanne’s original run, the show’s 2017 revival, and its subsequent spinoff, The Conners. However, she has already outlived her daughter Roseanne, and The Conners season 5, episode 8, “Of Missing Minds and Missing Fries,” revealed that she is battling severe dementia. Irrfan Rejected Christopher Nolan For A Film Whose Oscar Snub Made Many Furious, But It Was A Smart Decision! ( Photo Credit – IMDb; Facebook )
How many actors do you know who have rejected Christopher Nolan’s one of the very best films in a film that will turn out to be a box office Blockbuster and made every single soul angry for not getting a shot at the Oscars? Well, you know by the title it’s Irrfan, and we believe he’s the only Indian actor who could even think to say no to one of the most loved directors across the globe.
Irrfan, back in 2011-12, agreed to shoot Ritesh Batra’s ‘festival film’ & people weren’t shocked at his casting because who better than him to play the typical Bandra uncle donning formals with a bag in his hand, doing the monotonous routine job from the past 35 years...
