Thessaloniki Doc Fest Competition Title ‘Demetra K’ Brings Sex Work Into the Light
Image
“When business in brothels is slow, that means the economy is on the ropes.” Those words, uttered by the indelible madame at the heart of director Eva Stefani’s “Days and Nights of Demetra K.,” offers a fitting introduction to the way in which the ups and downs in the life of a single sex worker mirror the larger political and economic uncertainties rattling post-crisis Greece.

Stefani’s feature-length debut, which has its premiere in the main competition at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, centers on the life of the titular Demetra K., who runs one of the oldest brothels in Athens. The film follows her throughout a turbulent period when the Greek economy is on the verge of collapse and a contentious law on prostitution threatens the world’s oldest profession in the cradle of Western civilization. Pic is produced by Amanda Livanou, of Neda Film, in co-production with Faliro House Productions...

‘Skeleton Twins’ Robust In Specialty Box-Office Expansion; ‘Pride’ Solid In Debut
Even with another flood of specialty film debuts, The Skeleton Twins, the dramedy starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, had another impressive box office showing in its third weekend. Meanwhile, another dozen films tried to elbow past last week’s 14 newcomers and numerous others already in the market, to middling success among those reporting.

Other than Twins, the holdovers that look like they’re gaining some autumnal momentum include IFC Films‘ The Trip To Italy with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, and more niche-oriented films such as American Experience/PBS Films’ doc Last Days In Vietnam and Oscilloscope’s Art And Craft. Starz Media also scored a robust gross for the second week of Not Cool, featuring YouTube star Shane Dawson, as it migrated east to New York and was also profiled on a Starz channel doc series.

CBS Films’ Pride can be proud of scoring the weekend’s highest average among new titles.

Birds of a Feather: Camargo’s Debut a Tepid Chekhovian Transplant

Contemporizing classic literature can be a tricky feat, though it more often than not seems unjustified. Actor Christian Camargo has reworked Anton Chekov’s classic play The Seagull for his directorial debut, Days and Nights, curiously setting the Russian tragedy in 1984 New England. With an extremely lucrative cast at hand, Camargo’s fiddling around with the text isn’t completely bereft of ingenious new ways to converse with Chekov’s classic, though more often than not, this is simply another tedious glimpse of familial dysfunction, relocated to the heart of a Wasp’s nest. While it isn’t necessary to be familiar with the material Camargo is in correspondence with, one’s awareness of it may impede rather than enhance this film, which often feels strained or confused upon comparison.

It’s Memorial Day Weekend in 1984, and famous...

Chekhovian Days and Nights Exposes a Family Coming Unhinged
Days and Nights (2014)
Every Chekhov adaptation presents unhappiness in its own way, albeit typically at a country house where a tense family gathering exposes each character's underlying discontent. Loosely based on The Seagull, writer and director Christian Camargo's debut feature, Days and Nights, unfolds during Memorial Day 1984, when Reagan's America offered Cold War propaganda, a deadly immunodeficiency virus, and an atmosphere of stifled creativity. There's a touch of Grey Gardens to the New England lake house owned by Elizabeth (Allison Janney), an actress who brings her latest paramour home for the holiday weekend. Camargo casts himself as the outsider, Peter, a Hollywood director who becomes the focus of desire, resentment, and hostility. Peter immediately senses a ruin...

What's Next For Katie Holmes
Katie Holmes
New York -- If you want to get a good idea of Katie Holmes, actress – as opposed to tabloid star – you can't do any better than "Pieces of April," a gem from 2003 in which she plays a ponytailed and tattooed New Yorker desperately trying to prove herself to her visiting suburban family with an improvised, downtown Thanksgiving dinner.

This was back when Holmes was transitioning out of "Dawson's Creek," that teenage soap of a fictional New England coastal town childhood. But Holmes had already amassed an early filmography that any young actress would envy, including "The Ice Storm," "Go" and "Wonder Boys."

The budget for "Pieces of April" started at $6 million, but dwindled to $300,000 and was shot over just 16 days. Writer-director Peter Hedges recalls shooting in "condemnable" buildings with paint dropping off the walls of Holmes' makeshift dressing room.

"You learn a lot about a person's character when you work in those conditions,...

Katie Holmes' Next Movie Role: Single Motherhood
As Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes prepare for their own personal "War of the Worlds" in divorce court, the Kat part of the TomKat equation is growling awfully loud via her new screen endeavor.

In a case of art sticking its middle finger at life, People reports that 33-year-old Holmes is co-writing and co-producing a new film titled "Molly," which follows a single mother and her daughter. How Suri-prising.

The sure-to-be controversial conversation stirrer will lens through August in New York City, where she and 6-year-old daughter Suri share a brand spanking new $12,000 a month apartment.

The Big Apple is also where Holmes' first court hearing for sole custody occurs on July 17, assuming Cruise and his top gun law team led by attorney Bert Fields don't tractor beam the case to California like some litigating Death Star.

However, recent reports from the Daily Mail indicate that legal teams from both...

'Tom Forbade Katie From Dawson's Creek Reunion'
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tom Cruise forbade Katie Holmes from appearing in a Dawson's Creek Reunion film, Us Weekly has claimed.

The magazine reports that when Holmes was approached about possibly reuniting with her former costars James Van Der Beek and Joshua Jackson, Cruise vetoed the idea.

A source told the new issue of Us Weekly: "Tom said absolutely no way and thought going backward would be bad."

Holmes starred as girl-next-door Joey Potter on Dawson's Creek for six seasons and, in a November 2011 appearance on Good Morning America, said a reunion movie "would be fun. I had so much fun working on that show and I loved everyone so much and I think about it with such fond memories".

Holmes filed for divorce in New York City on 28 June after five years of marriage to Cruise and is now said to be planning a return to the acting world.

She just wrapped a...
