Wild Foxes Review: Camille’s Fight for Identity
Image
Camille reigns supreme at a French sports-study boarding school, his every jab and uppercut marking him as the nation’s junior boxing champion. Yet the moment he plummets ten metres down a rocky incline, the gravity of his world shifts—muscles stiffen with phantom pain, confidence fractures and a once-tight brotherhood begins to splinter. Set against a backdrop of echoing gymnasiums and mist-shrouded woods, Wild Foxes threads high-octane fight sequences with hushed forest vignettes, creating a rhythm that echoes the push-and-pull of physical mastery and introspection.

The film’s environment recalls the focused energy found in Indian parallel-cinema classics, where the body often becomes both canvas and battleground—think Mrinal Sen’s explorations of societal constraints or the visceral realism of contemporary sports dramas like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Carnoy’s camera shifts from steady wide shots in the ring to handheld immediacy, mirroring Camille’s fluctuating sense of control. The forest,...

Pawan Malhotra Speaks To Subhash K Jha On His Finest Performance In Black Friday
Image
18 years ago, Aurag Kashyap’s drama Black Friday released. Subhash K Jha revisits the film that starred Pavan Malhotra, Kk Menon, and Aditya Srivastav.

Recreating the events leading up to the ‘Bombay’ blasts (there was no Mumbai back then) on 12 March 1993, Anurag Kashyap’s clenched drama on the second-worst terror attack in Mumbai is a source of constant shock. On each viewing, you will come across new facets of the dark, diabolic characters plotting a conspiracy that still boggles the mind.

The extraordinary cast adds considerably to the palate of pulsating action. Watch out especially for Pavan Malhotra as Tiger Memon, K K Menon as inspector Rakesh Maria, and Aditya Srivastava Badshah Khan. Oh, didn’t I tell you? This film, for once, names and shames real-life terrorists.

Anurag Kashyap’s desperately dark exploration of the plan to blow up Mumbai had several exceptional performances, none more so than Pavan,...

‘Vijay 69’ Netflix Review: Sports-Comedy Film Is Enjoyable Despite Its Cliches & Melodrama
Image
Back in the day, I don’t think sports movies were as popular in Bollywood as they are today. So, despite something as momentous as India’s win at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, we didn’t get a slew of films around that topic. In fact, it wasn’t until 2001’s Lagaan that we got a film wholly centered around cricket. The subgenre of drama films expanded in the 2000s with Iqbal, Chak De India, and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. In the 2010s we got Patiala House, Brothers, Saala Khadoos, and straight-up masterpieces like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dangal, and Mukkabaaz. The 2020s have given us Panga, Rashmi Rocket, Liger (it is what it is), and Ghoomer. And to add to this illustrious list, while also making it a bit diverse, is Vijay 69.

Akshay Roy’s Vijay 69 tells the story of the former swimming champion, Vijay Mathew, who is presumed...

Chandu Champion Box Office: Kartik Aaryan Starrer Is Among Top 10 Bollywood Openers Of 2024, Is Similar To Maidaan
Image
Box Office – Chandu Champion is amongst Top-10 openers of 2024, is similar to another sports biopic drama Maidaan (Photo Credit – YouTube )

Chandu Champion has found a place amongst the Top-10 openers of 2024. With 5.40 crores coming on its first day, the collection is just a little over another sports biopic drama set in the bygone era, Maidaan. That film had arrived on Eid but had a clash with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which evened out the advantage. On the other hand, Chandu Champion has arrived solo on a regular working day, but has to compete with last week’s Munjya. So in that sense, there is hardly much to differentiate the two films in terms having advantage at the box office.

It also goes on to show that the genre has its limitations when it comes to the opening day numbers. Yes, in the past films like Gold, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Kom...

Image
Maidaan Worldwide Box Office Collection! (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Ajay Devgn led Maidaan released on the occasion of Eid but could hardly benefit from the festival. The film was expected to witness a big box office clash with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, but unfortunately, that is not the case. The biographical sports drama has even remained lower than Akshay Kumar starrer in terms of worldwide collections at the box office. Scroll below for all the details!

Maidaan is based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, a pioneering football coach in India between 1952 and 1962. We have previously seen sports biopics perform well in India. Whether it was Ms Dhoni: The Untold Story, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Chak De! India or Dangal, these films attracted a lot of footfall at the ticket windows. But in the case of Ajay Devgn’s film, the pre-release buzz in itself was not upto the mark.

Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)
Exploring Gender Dynamics and Nationalism in Indian Sports Cinema: A Comparative Analysis of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) and Dangal (2016)
Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)
by Upasana Dandona

“Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” (2013) and “Dangal” (2016) are both biographical films based on the lives of Indian sportspersons. However, while representing actual events, the two films — either directly or indirectly — highlight various themes about sports arenas in India being extremely gendered spaces. The most important of these become the strict creation and demarcation of the feminine and masculine binaries, something that goes on to shape the overall narratives of the films.

Check also this article Film Review: Dangal (2016) by Nitesh Tiwari

Even though nationalism, as a concept, remains central in both movies, something that comes in its way is the masculine ego of different sportspersons. In “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, this happens when the main character, Milkha Singh (Farhan Akhtar), who has all the abilities to win an international medal for his country, is roughed up by his fellow athletes as they fear competition. The personal victories of the assailants,...

Mrunal Thakur
Mrunal Thakur feels filmmakers like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra envision women characters with equal footing
Mrunal Thakur
Actress Mrunal Thakur feels that very few filmmakers give equal footing to women characters in their movies.

According to her, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is one of those filmmakers who treats female characters in their films well.

"There are very few filmmakers who envision a story that gives its women characters an equal footing. In the best of Rakeysh's works, one can see how beautifully he layers his women. Be it Soha Ali Khan's Sonia in 'Rang De Basanti' or the female characters in 'Delhi 6' or 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', his women are memorable," said Mrunal.

She will be seen in Mehra's next film "Toofan" alongside Farhan Akhtar.

"In 'Toofan' my character is an anchor to the narrative despite not being the driving force of the plot. It was a beautiful experience working with Farhan and Rakeysh. They subconsciously help you push yourself to explore things you haven't tried.

By Vinod Mirani

Since the time Sacred Games released on the Ott streaming platform Netflix, there has been a debate on whether the content on these platforms should be kept in check or let to run loose.

The series had never-seen-before morbidity, unnatural sex, filthiest of foul language and yet delivered nothing that one could take home. Taking home was a phrase much related to films as there were times when one walked out of a cinema hall humming one of the film's songs or repeating its dialogue. What do you take home from, say, Sacred Games, Pataal Lok, Mirzapur, Mastram and such?

This column just recently discussed the limitations of the Cinematograph Act by which the authority of the Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) extends only till rating and certifying a film product that is meant for public exhibition.

In such an event, there is no check on what passes as Ott content.
