Some Western sequels surpassed the originals, like in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, standing the test of time. Others, like High Noon, Part II & Return of the Seven, failed to live up to the originals, disappointing audiences. Planned sequels, like Wind River: The Next Chapter & Horizon: An American Saga, aim to continue the stories of iconic Westerns.
It’s not incredibly common for Western movies to receive sequels, which was likely because most of them end in a shootout with the majority of the characters meeting their demise. However, there were a select few that, due to their popularity or narrative needs, were lucky enough to garner a follow-up. When looking at Western movies that received sequels, the most noticeable aspect was the sheer variety in quality, as some could be far superior to the original and others struggled to justify their existence.

Wind River sequel is happening without Taylor Sheridan, with a new director and different cast members. Wind River: The Next Chapter will have a new premise focusing on ritualistic murders on a reservation. The upcoming Wind River sequel might not match the original's success due to the lack of Sheridan's involvement.
Taylor Sheridan has seemingly revived Western stories on television with Yellowstone, but the filmmaker dipped his toe into the genre a year beforehand with his movie Wind River, which is surprisingly getting a sequel. The neo-Western crime film was directed and written by Sheridan and premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival before releasing in theaters in the United States on August 4, 2017. Most critics gave Wind River positive reviews, which praised the movie for the cast's performances, the compelling and significant story at the center of the mystery, and Sheridan's direction.

A sequel to Taylor Sheridan's Wyoming reservation-set thriller "Wind River" is in the works, and it officially has a cast attached. Scott Eastwood, Jason Clarke, and Chaske Spencer have all boarded "Wind River: The Next Chapter," with "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" filmmaker Kari Skogland set to direct.
The original 2017 film starred Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as a Fish and Wildlife agent and an FBI agent who are partnered together to solve a potential homicide involving a Native American teen girl. While the movie was well-made and spotlighted the endemic, underrepresented issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, "Wind River" also received criticism for the way some viewers say Sheridan — a white man whose works, including "Yellowstone," often feature Indigenous characters — sensationalized on-screen violence against Native women.
