A paranormal romance normally revolves around the love affair between a human and a magical being or supernatural entity. Sometimes both lovers are supernatural beings, but one is newly initiated into that world. The creatures vary from shifters to vampires to werewolves to ghosts, and beyond. Themes of immortality, lost love, and violence tend to permeate these stories.
Gothic romance novels popularized the concept of paranormal romances. In gothic romances, the paranormal entities tended to be steeped in metaphor while the more modern romances are explicitly paranormal. Some anime couples are just so farfetched that they're laughable. But somehow, the couples' incongruous natures and predicaments work together to make a compelling, or at least entertaining, love story. Sometimes the couples are such a disaster that even if the audience knows it's a dumpster-fire, they just can't look away.
Just because an anime couple may never work in real life doesn't mean it doesn't make a great story. Some off-beat anime may be incredibly unlikely, but their romance has a certain charm. They may be hokey in every other story, but sometimes the perfect elements converge to make a silly premise entirely watchable.
