Ah, the “Leprechaun” films! They may not be the St. Patrick’s Day slashers we deserve — but they sure as shit are the ones we have. Revisiting Lubdan the Leprechaun is an annual tradition that plenty of horror fans practice each and every spring. In 2025, marathoning these mostly mediocre movies is an especially good idea.
For one thing, the best “Leprechaun” film was made by the always-busy Steven Kostanski: a cult-favorite director who found even more fans with last year’s delightfully weird “Frankie Freako.” The worst in the bunch is also worth checking out this March, if only because it was directed by the same guy who is now helping to resurrect “Final Destination” at Warner Bros. with co-director Adam Stein.
Director Zach Lipovsky missed big with “Leprechaun: Origins” in 2014, but Kostanski helped the series rebound with “Leprechaun Returns” just four years later. That’s par for the...

Holiday themed horror films occupy a special place in the genre. While too many horror movies are released and forgotten, ones tied to annual holidays find themselves back in the conversation each and every year. John Carpenter's "Halloween" is obviously the king of this particular hill, both in how strongly its tied to the day and in the breadth of its franchise, but there are numerous others occupying the calendar year. Christmas has dozens of memorable horror films, New Year's Eve/Day has "Terror Train" and "New Year's Evil," Valentine's Day has "My Bloody Valentine" and "Heart Eyes," Thanksgiving has "Blood Rage" and "Thanksgiving" -- you get the idea.
It might surprise you, though, that when it comes to the size and scope of the franchise, it's a horror franchise connected to St. Patrick's Day that lands the spot right behind Halloween. It might not take place on the holiday,...

Back in 2023, Liongate announced a Leprechaun reboot with Felipe Vargas directing from a script by Mike Van Waes (Lilo & Stitch).
News has been quiet on that front since, but our luck hasn’t run out completely! The studio just dropped official Leprechaun merch in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
The selection includes T-shirts ($24.99), long sleeves ($39.95), hoodies ($44.95), mugs ($19.95), and tumblers ($39.95), each with a unique design.
Written and directed by Mark Jones, the 1993 cult classic follows an evil Leprechaun on a killing rampage in search of his beloved pot of gold.
Warwick Davis stars as the titular slasher alongside a then-unknown Jennifer Aniston. Ken Olandt, Mark Holton, and Robert Gorman round out the cast.
It spawned five direct sequels, the 2014 reboot Leprechaun: Origins, and the 2018 legacy sequel Leprechaun Returns.

Top of the mornin’ to you! It may not be St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s never a bad time to watch Leprechaun movies, and we here at Arrow in the Head decided to go back over the whole Leprechaun franchise to rank them from worst to first. The Leprechaun Movies Ranked list can be seen below – check it out and let us know how you would rank the movies!
Leprechaun: Origins (2014)
This is appalling. Director Zach Lipovsky, writer Harris Wilkinson, and WWE Studios were given the chance to make a new Leprechaun movie, they cast a professional wrestler (Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl) as the title character, and then they just churned out a dull monster movie. I don’t know how anyone involved thought this was a good idea (“You know what we should do? Take everything people liked about Leprechaun and remove it!”) or how Leprechaun: Origins made it through production.

Once again resurrecting the horror franchise from the 1990s, Lionsgate is bringing Leprechaun back to life for a new generation. Debuting in 1993, the cult-classic horror-comedy series chronicles various people as they get on the bad side of the mythical Irish terror after taking his pot of gold. Though the series was always tinged with a bit of silliness, the subsequent Leprechaun sequels pushed the envelope until the verdant menace found his way into space and "tha hood" as the films continued into the early 2000s. Despite that, Lionsgate has seen the recognizable intellectual property's potential and developed a reboot.

"Leprechaun" is one of those horror franchises that keeps on keepin' on. It's not very good, and yet, we, the movie-watching public, return to these movies again and again, even as they grow progressively more ridiculous. One recurring element in all of the "Leprechaun" movies is a sense of humor, particularly from the titular Leprechaun, played in the majority of the movies by Warwick Davis. Like Freddy Krueger in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" sequels, the Leprechaun is a jokester; he likes to quip when he's killing.
But as silly as the series has grown, there was a point in time when the original film was going to be much different. Specifically, it was going to be something darker and more horror-forward. Things changed, and a sense of humor prevailed. But imagine an alternate timeline when the first "Leprechaun" movie was a full-blown serious horror picture designed to scare the hell out of you.

Not all horror villains are successful murderers; some like Ghostface from Scream and Annabelle relied on others for their kills. Mister Babadook and Lubdan the Leprechaun were terrifying but ultimately terrible at actually killing their intended victims. The Beast from Poltergeist failed to capitalize on opportunities to kill, making them more of a menacing presence than an effective killer.
Horror villains have kept audiences on the edge of their seats and fearing for their lives, but some were simply terrible at actually killing their victims. The best horror movies have introduced all kinds of villains to audiences, from the intelligent and sneaky to the brutally violent. These titles became known as the slasher film subgenre, focused explicitly on gruesome deaths, and became a hugely popular subgenre. As unhinged scenes of extreme violence and torture played out on the silver screen, several characters lost their lives at the hands of some...

The upcoming Leprechaun reboot has gotten an update from its director.
Planned to relaunch the Leprechaun franchise, the new film is directed by Felipe Vargas. The filmmaker addressed the movie in a new interview for the Splattercast podcast (per Collider), sharing how honored he is to have gotten the job. He also teased the horror-comedy vibe of the movie, promising that it will embrace its comedy aspects. Vargas also compared the upcoming reboot to the original film in terms of how the first Leprechaun perfectly balanced its comedy and horror.

The erratic Leprechaun franchise is not known for sticking with a single concept for too long. The namesake (originally played by Warwick Davis) has gone to L.A., Las Vegas, space, and the ‘hood (not once but twice). And after an eleven-year holiday since the Davis era ended, the character received a drastic makeover in a now-unmentionable reboot. The critical failure of said film would have implied it was time to pack away the green top hat and shillelagh, and say goodbye to the nefarious imp. Instead, the Leprechaun series tried its luck again.
The general consensus for the Leprechaun films was never positive, and the darker yet blander Leprechaun: Origins certainly did not sway opinions. Just because the 2014 installment took itself seriously did not mean viewers would. After all, creator Mark Jones conceived a gruesome horror-comedy back in the early nineties, and that format is what was expected of any future ventures.

After a huge decade in the 1980s thanks to the slasher fad, horror was on the decline for the first half of the '90s, only making a comeback when Wes Craven's Scream came out in 1996. There were some hits here and there, like Candyman or Wes Craven's New Nightmare, but fans had mostly stopped caring about the big horror legends. Then came Leprechaun in 1993. It's a silly horror film, mostly known for introducing the world to Jennifer Aniston, but it's also a fun one thanks to the wild performance of Warwick Davis as an evil little leprechaun. It saw the creation of a new horror icon not to be taken too seriously. There have been eight films in the franchise, and while none of them are even close to great, one entry, in particular, took the formula and trashed it, resulting in one of the worst horror films in recent memory.

Halloween might be the next major holiday on the calendar but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a little luck o’ the Irish. Ahead of Halloween and to mark the occasion of the first Leprechaun movie’s 30th anniversary, director Mark Jones is giving his take not on the horror flick that launched an eight-movie (so far) franchise, but its sequels both good, bad and whatever Origins was going for.
Speaking with Comic Book Resources, director Mark Jones said he is a fan of most of the sequels, although there is one entry that stands out as notably bad. “I was a little bit involved in [Leprechaun 2]. To children, leprechauns have an innocent reputation of being the supernatural creature printed on the Lucky Charms cereal box. To director Mark Jones, leprechauns were a bit more devious. As the horror-comedy franchise Leprechaun makes its way to streaming on Hulu for its "Huluween" event this spooky season, Jones looks back on creating the Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston-led film that spawned seven movies.
Warwick Davis plays the titular role, where he hunts down civilians on a farm for a pot of gold he believes they stole. Leprechaun was also Aniston's film debut before she became famous on the highly acclaimed and popular television series Friends. In an interview with Cbr, director, and writer Mark Jones talked about how he took a low budget, a charismatic cast, and a mischievous vision to create the 1993 film and hinted at another Leprechaun installment in the future.

Horror was in a bad way during a good chunk of the 1990s. The slasher craze kicked off by John Carpenter's "Halloween" had more than run its course, so the studios, which never truly respected the genre in the first place, generally threw up their hands. If it wasn't a sequel or a Stephen King adaptation, they really weren't interested.
This is where upstart, mid-range production companies came in. There was still a healthy market for horror in the home video market, and, if you made the movie cheaply enough, potential to make a lightning-quick killing in theaters. Mark Jones' "Leprechaun" accomplished the latter in 1993. Released over the second weekend of January, the silly yarn about an ill-tempered fairy who goes on a murderous rampage whenever anyone steals his gold scared up $8.6 million at the United States box office. Given its $1 million budget, it was a modest hit for Trimark Pictures.

The Leprechaun movies balance absurdity and terror within the horror genre, delivering both ridiculous spectacle and frightening moments. Despite being absurd horror films, the franchise's installments vary in quality. They still manage to entertain with extreme kills and Warwick Davis' standout performance as the bloodthirsty Leprechaun. While not critical hits, the Leprechaun movies have capitalized on turning an innocent holiday into a grisly monster franchise. Leprechaun movies have dominated the St. Patrick's Day theme since the 1990s and continue to generate sequels.
The Leprechaun movies fit into a special niche in the horror genre where a movie can be both a ridiculous spectacle and a terrifying sight. Even under this consideration, the franchise's many installments are all over the map in terms of quality. The Leprechaun movies are clearly not trying to do anything innovative or sophisticated, so many of the would-be criticisms seem redundant to point out. They’re...

Leprechaun director Mark Jones reveals there is a director's cut of the horror-comedy, originally intended to be a comedy-horror. The film was initially planned as a kid's horror movie with a comedic twist, similar to live-action Scooby-Doo, but the studio wanted more violence. The biggest difference between the director's version and the theatrical release is the amount of violence, with cute scenes being removed.
During an exclusive chat with ComicBook.com, Leprechaun director Mark Jones discussed his 1993 classic and revealed that there is a director's cut of the horror-comedy.
Leprechaun was directed and written by Jones and starred Warwick Davis, Jennifer Aniston, Ken Olandt, Mark Holton, Robert Hy Gorman, Shay Duffin, and John Sanderford. The film follows an evil leprechaun (played by Warwick) who goes on a murderous rampage in order to recover his gold.

Horror is a subversive storytelling genre where it often feels like anything is possible. Horror remains one of the few genres of cinema where original ideas continue to thrive and a low-budget project can competently hold its own against major blockbusters. It is also no stranger to sequels and franchises.
It seems like any popular idea that does decently at the box office gets the chance to extend its story through at least one more installment. Some horror franchises make the most out of this and improve upon their foundation, but it's also quite easy for sequels to hit diminishing returns and go so off course from the original movie that it's impossible to get things back on track.

One of the more interesting slasher movie franchises is Leprechaun, even if it isn't the luckiest one. Though never critically beloved, the series has gained a fanbase over the years that loves the humorous and homicidal antics of Lubdan and his quest for his gold. Due to this endearing popularity, the Leprechaun series is getting a reboot, though there's one element that definitely needs to stay.
Though other classic slasher franchises have become known for their jokes, Leprechaun is the epitome of a laughable slasher. This mix of comedy and horror has become particularly successful in the modern day, with 2023 seeing several such combinations doing well at the box office. Instead of toning down the jokes and making them into something spookier, the Leprechaun reboot should continue the series' usual trend of getting high on low-brow humor.

A new Leprechaun movie is currently in development at Lionsgate with It producer Roy Lee. Commencing with the original 1993 horror-comedy Leprechaun, Star Wars and Willow actor Warwick Davis assumed the role of a homicidal leprechaun who would go to any lengths necessary to recover his stolen gold. Davis later returned for five more sequels before the role was taken over by WWE star Dylan Postl for 2014’s Leprechaun: Origins and then Linden Porco for 2018’s Leprechaun Returns.
A new report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Lionsgate plans to reimagine the long-running franchise with Lee producing the film under his Vertigo Entertainment banner along with Don’t Worry Darling’s, Miri Yoon. Felipe Vargas, who helmed the 2020 horror short Milk Teeth, has been tapped to direct using a script penned by Lilo & Stitch scribe Mike Van Waes. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Lionsgate has given the greenlight to a new film in the Leprechaun franchise – but it doesn’t sound like this one will see Warwick Davis reprising his iconic role, nor will it be a follow-up to Leprechaun Returns, where Linden Porco played the title character. Instead, the project is being described as a “reimagining”, with Felipe Vargas, director of the award-winning short film Milk Teeth, on board to direct.
Mike Van Waes, who wrote the novel Peeves and has worked on the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch movie, has written the screenplay for the new Leprechaun. Plot details are being kept under wraps. All we know right now is that Lionsgate is aiming to “reimagine the horror title for a new generation of moviegoers“.

St. Patrick's Day is a traditional Irish holiday, but it's also become a big part of pop culture with sitcom episodes and horror movies themed around the day. Although movies such as Leprechaun immediately come to mind when picturing St. Patrick's Day horror, there are several lesser-known gems in the subgenre that build upon the story Mark Jones created. Many horror movies with St. Patrick's Day-related themes include the involvement of leprechauns.
Leprechauns as present in horror movies stem from the Celtic folklore of "lobaircin", who were said to be small-bodied men that used trickery to guard their treasures. While the leprechaun has become the standard for horror films of this kind, recent filmmakers have explored other avenues of terror for the otherwise cheerful holiday. Many of the St. Patrick's Day horror movies are simply set on that day, like so many horror movies set on Christmas Day centering on the holiday,...

Darren Lynn Bousman, the director best known for directing four entries in the Saw franchise, including the latest entry Spiral: From the Book of Saw, has been very clear over the years that he wants to take a crack at Leprechaun. Call it a reboot, call it whatever you like, but Bousman wants to see Warwick Davis back in the role, give the killer a time machine and take him back to the old west.
I recently had the chance to speak with Darren Lynn Bousman in honor of the release of Spiral. During our conversation, I asked him why he is so intent on making this Leprechaun reboot happen, and why he is so confident he is the right guy, with the right take for the job. For him, it's about making a fun horror movie. Here's what he had to say about it.
"Here's what I love about the Leprechaun franchise.

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.

While the rest of the world is seemingly falling apart, there are some constants that we can hold onto. One of these is that Syfy will use St. Patrick’s Day to share at least one Leprechaun-themed movie, and this March 17th they’re doubling down by showing both 2018’s Leprechaun Returns and 2012’s Leprechaun’s Revenge. While the latter film isn’t actually part of the main Leprechaun franchise, Syfy’s theme means that audiences will be able to see the two titles alternate from 8pm to 4am Est.

This weekend marked another St. Patrick's Day, and to celebrate, writer-director Darren Lynn Bousman took to Twitter to let us all know that he still wants Lionsgate to hand him the keys to a semi-classic horror franchise: Leprechaun. Yeah, true story.
Evidently, Darren Lynn Bousman wants to bring back original franchise star Warwick Davis and send the little green guy back in time to the Colorado Gold Rush. Which sounds pretty awesome. Specifically, Bousman says this.
"It's that time of year again where I remind my good friends at @Lionsgate that I still want to reboot the Leprechaun movie (Again)... Lep gets in a time machine and goes back to the Colorado Gold Rush. You guys have my number, I'll be sitting by the phone."

It's been one heck of a year for horror. In particular, it's been a banner year for long-running horror franchises making their very welcomed returns. Halloween is easily the biggest and perhaps best example of this, but Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich also brilliantly (and bloodily) revived the puppet slasher series. And not for nothing, but Robert Englund even returned as Freddy Krueger in an episode of The Goldbergs for the first time in more than a decade. What more could we ask for? How's about a brand new Leprechaun movie that completely reinvents the franchise for a new generation?
That's exactly what we're getting in Leprechaun Returns, which takes a similar approach to the new Halloween. Instead of messing around with the long-standing continuity of the original movies, which saw the horror icon go to the hood (twice) and even to space, director Steven Kostanski (The Void) and SyFy...

With only a few days to go until Leprechaun Returns brings the little Irish killer back to our screens, a new round of official images has just been released that puts the spotlight on Linden Porco.
The Channel Zero actor will be the first to inhabit the role of the murderous Leprechaun since Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl played the part in 2014’s Leprechaun: Origins. But the performance that viewers will really be measuring Porco against will be the take offered by Warwick Davis for the franchise’s first six installments.
Earlier this month, Davis explained that fatherhood made him reluctant to come back to the horror property, teasing that he’ll do some more work in the genre once his son turns 18. That leaves the spot open for Porco to show us what he can do in the role, though the actor has explained previously that he didn’t feel a...

That leaves the spot open for Porco to show us what he can do in the role, though the actor has explained previously that he didn’t feel a...

Though the Leprechaun movies have never earned the favor of the critics, this decades-spanning horror-comedy franchise has still amassed an impressive following over the years, and it’s clear that the mischievous screen presence of Warwick Davis has a fair amount to do with it. With that in mind, perhaps there’s something a little misleading about the title of the upcoming Leprechaun Returns, in that Davis is no longer the psychotic star under all that makeup.
Speaking to Bang Showbiz, the actor reflected on his six-movie run in the series, and explained why fatherhood encouraged him to take a break from horror.
“You know what, we did six ‘Leprechaun’ films, and around Halloween people always watch them and love them,” Davis told the site. “Horror is an interesting medium. I think it’s different when you have kids; you look at horror in a slightly different way. Since I...

With Leprechaun Returns just a couple of weeks away from release, Lionsgate has shared a new set of stills from the horror-comedy sequel that give us another taste of the carnage coming our way.
The first installment in the horror-comedy series since 2014’s widely rejected Leprechaun: Origins, the Steven Kostanski-helmed film sees the familiar killer heading for Alpha Upsilon house, and in this latest batch of images, we’re given a couple more glimpses at the students charged with suffering through this frightful night. We also get another look at the makeup job done on the Leprechaun’s latest rendition, but the most notable photo in this set is almost certainly the pic in which Linden Porco’s character appears to be bursting out of a victim’s torso Alien-style.

The SyFy Network has released the first trailer for Leprechaun Returns. This is the first film in the series, since 2014's Leprechaun: Origins. There have been a total of eight films in the franchise, with the first one starring Jennifer Anniston and Warwick Davis, way back in 1993. This latest title follows the first film, with a Leprechaun searching for his pot-o-gold. Meanwhile, a sorority house is being built over his golden stash. This latest film stars: Taylor Spreitler, Sai Bennett, Pepi Sonuga, Ben McGregor, and Emily Reid. Steven Kostanski (The Void) has directed this feature, with more film details below. A creature feature, Leprechaun Returns was developed by a number of production companies. SyFy has been involved, along with Blue Ice Pictures and Out of Africa Entertainment. This team endeavour is slated for a mid-December run on Digital platforms. This latest film follows a similar plot, compared to the original.

"I've got a lot of killin' to make up for...!" Syfy has released an official trailer for the upcoming horror sequel Leprechaun Returns, being release straight-to-vod in December. Remarkably, the Leprechaun series is currently on its eighth film. The most recent two were Leprechaun: Origins in 2014 (did anyone see this?) and Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood, of course, back in 2003. This new one even includes an old character from the original 1993 film, Mark Holton. And unfortunately Warwick Davis is not back this time, instead Linden Porco plays the super creepy Leprechaun. He returns once again, when a group of girls unwillingly awaken him, while they tear down a cabin so that they can build a new sorority house. The full cast includes Taylor Spreitler, Sai Bennett, Pepi Sonuga, Ben McGregor, and Emily Reid. This seriously looks crazy messed up and seriously twisted, not to mention packed with a bunch of bad one-liners.

Earlier this month, we were treated to the first poster for the upcoming Leprechaun Returns, which featured the title killer emerging from a wishing well. Now, we’ve got a better look at where this depraved creature is headed thanks to a new trailer, which debuted online today and promises lots of carnage to come.
The first outing in the horror-comedy series since 2014’s disappointing Leprechaun: Origins, the Steven Kostanski-helmed film will be taking the action to Alpha Upsilon house, where some sorority sisters thought it’d be a good idea to use a nearby well as an environmentally friendly source of water. While trying to go green, though, they unfortunately awaken the titular Irish monster, who’s seemingly in the mood for some killing.

Longtime horror fans know it's been a wild ride for the Leprechaun movie series. The saga first began when Warwick Davis took on the role of the titular villain in the original 1993 film. Five sequels would follow, with each one somehow being even crazier than the one before it. Although WWE Studios released a film reboot in 2014, the franchise is now going back to its roots with the new film Leprechaun Returns, which will serve as a direct sequel to the original movie. This time, the evil Leprechaun will be going after sorority sisters, as shown in an all new poster for the upcoming sequel.
Of course, this isn't the first we've gotten to see from the upcoming movie. Earlier this year, a teaser trailer was released by SyFy for Leprechaun Returns with a 2019 release date attached. However, it has since been announced that Lionsgate will be releasing the movie on digital platforms next month.
