A Pleasant Surprise

This was a decent TV series. It's too bad it didn't get to be seen by a larger audience, because it seems like this could have been Great.

It reminded me of "24". Not in context or even production value, but as a self contained series with lots of different stories going off of the main storyline. With "Harry" it takes you for a ride, as you get involved with the dynamics of the characters.

Oscar Knightley is the star here, even though Sam Neill is the famous name. Oscar take the limits of his character to a place that you almost forget it's a TV show.

If you like good drama with some action, this is for you.

I was just thinking...

I really enjoyed the series and would happily watch more. Oscar and Sam are the class acts (actors) for sure, but there are really no weak links in the caste. As an observation, in case anyone was wondering if this is worth watching... If you enjoyed the series 'Bosch' from the USA, you will enjoy 'Harry'. It is an interesting duality between the two shows. Both titular characters are good cops with a troubled past. Both have issues with authority and both tread a fine line with the law. I rate them equally in quality which is really quite a compliment to the NZ show knowing how small and hard fought for the budgets are in the tiny depressed economy.

a strong crime drama

Harry is one of those TV shows where your "vote" or number of starts you attribute to it doesn't matter. If you expect CSI New Zealand you'll probably be disappointed. But if you like it, you'll want more.

Harry is almost a docudrama which is at the same time it's highlight yet makes it less accessible to average viewers. As in real life, private problems influence the profession. In particular, main character's doubts and personal demons have a strong impact on his decisions. Since he is a police officer this will create real danger for the people involved. As the story progresses it becomes darker and might alienate the viewers who expect light fun after a long day at work.

Overall, Harry is a well done TV show with actors delivering a fine performance. It is based on true events and might affect your impression about otherwise idyllic image of New Zealand.
