It’s the end of Sundance as we know it and Hollywood feels … fine.
The indie film festival, created by Robert Redford in the 1970s but facing a crossroads in recent years with low sales and few breakout hits, is moving to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027.
Boulder, which rests about 30 miles north of Denver, beat out a Salt Lake City/Park City hybrid and Cincinnati, Ohio, in the final round of bidding. All of the industry insiders who spoke to TheWrap said the choice was solid, the change welcome and the move absolutely necessary for the long-running festival.
“It’s kind of sad not to go to a Sundance in Park City, but I am also kind of excited about the possibilities and maybe improvements in a different location,” Carla Gutierrez, a filmmaker and editor who’s been going to Sundance since 2004 and most recently attended with her documentary “Frida” in 2024, told TheWrap.

The Michael B. Jordan supernatural thriller, Sinners, is on track to become a winner for Warner Bros. at the box office. Jordan's latest collaboration with director Ryan Coogler gets an encouraging opening weekend projection ahead of its Easter release.
According to Deadline, Sinners looks set to make over $40 million domestically during its opening weekend, an encouraging number considering its $90 million production budget. Though some tracking services have Sinners grossing closer to $30 million in its first three days, the report notes that Warner Bros. will significantly step up its marketing push in the run-in to the film's theatrical release.
Warner Bros. acquired the rights to Sinners early last year, winning a bidding war for the project after Jordan and Coogler had been developing it extensively. The studio is banking on Jordan and Coogler's proven track record with previous collaborations as they found critical and commercial success with Fruitvale Station, Creed and both Black Panther movies.

The anticipated supernatural period thriller, Sinners, sees Michael B. Jordan pulling double duty in the Warner Bros. tentpole. A new preview of the upcoming blockbuster sees the award-winning actor portraying his twin brother characters.

The poster also confirms Sinners will be getting an IMAX 70mm release as the film was shot using IMAX cameras.
Though Jordan's characters are twins, he recently insisted that the characters have very different mannerisms, with Smoke, who's on the left in the poster, being the more confrontational of the two brothers, with Stack being the more reserved character. The hype for Sinners has officially increased tenfold, as an Academy Award-winning filmmaker has given the film a glowing endorsement. Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in a vampire film, the third Warner Bros. movie of 2025, where an actor plays dual roles — following Mickey 17 and The Alto Knights. Sinners is directed by Ryan Coogler, who has just come off two back-to-back Black Panther films, meaning expectations are high. But movie fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as Spike Lee has given the film a glowing endorsement.
The legendary director behind classics like Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, BlacKkKlansman, and Da 5 Bloods, had the chance to screen Sinners early, and has nothing but great things to say about the movie. Director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan are ready to enter the supernatural realm with their latest feature-length collaboration, Sinners. The upcoming Warner Bros. blockbuster gets its official rating, one not associated with a Coogler movie since his first joint venture with his Black Panther franchise teammate.
According to FilmRatings.com,Sinners landed an R-rating heading into its spring release for strong bloody violence and sexual content. This marks new ground for Coogler as Sinners is his first R-rated film since 2013's Fruitvale Station, his critically acclaimed first project alongside Jordan.
Warner Bros. is banking on Coogler and Jordan's partnership to bear fruit again, considering the success of their previous work. Before teaming up with Warner Bros. on Sinners, Coogler and Jordan worked on the beloved Rocky spinoff, Creed, and both entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Panther film series. According to FilmRatings.com, Sinners has officially been given an R-rating, the first time Coogler has directed an R-rated movie since Fruitvale Station (2013), the first film he ever directed in his career. After directing Fruitvale Station, which also stars Jordan alongside Kevin Durand, Coogler then helmed Creed, the Rocky spin-off movie, before stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to helm the Chadwick Boseman-led Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Now, more than 10 years removed from his debut, Coogler is returning to his roots and delivering what may well be his most violent film yet.

Sinners now has an official MPA rating, and it breaks a long-standing Ryan Coogler streak. Marking Coogler's follow-up to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as brothers Elijah and Elias Smoke. The supernatural horror-thriller film, which also stars Hailee Steinfeld and Jack O'Connell, follows Elijah and Elias as they return to their hometown, ready for a fresh start, before discovering that it has been overrun by vampires. Trailers for Sinners have teased that what follows will be a bloody and action-packed ride.
Now, FilmRatings.com reveals that the MPA has officially given Sinners an R rating for "strong bloody violence, sexual content and language." This marks Coogler's first R rating since 2013's Fruitvale Station, which also starred Jordan, with all of his movies in between earning PG-13s.

A couple of months ago, I had a movie experience that truly shook me up. It was early December, and I was in the middle of my end-of-the-year marathon, catching up with the big prestigious awards-season films I’d missed. One of them was “I’m Still Here,” Walter Salles’ acclaimed true-life drama, set in Brazil in 1970, about a family whose exuberant and loving existence falls off a cliff when the father, Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), is taken in for police questioning by the country’s military dictatorship. His wife, Eunice (Fernanda Torres), is told that it’s a routine interrogation, and that he’ll be back within a matter of hours. But that doesn’t happen. The hours stretch into days, then weeks, and then months. He is never heard from again.
I’ve been watching movies about political oppression, and scenarios like this one, for most of my life.

With so many classic shows getting reboots or remakes, Michael B. Jordan hopes one beloved series won't be revisited. The Sinners star shares his thoughts on a potential revamp of the acclaimed crime drama, The Wire, and why Hollywood should "leave it where it is."
During a career retrospective feature with GQ, Jordan addressed his most iconic characters in TV shows and films, including his breakthrough turn as Wallace in The Wire. According to the award-winning actor, Jordan believes The Wire doesn't need a reboot given how revered the original is among critics and fans. "I would love to see that just remain, you know, without a reboot, without a recast, any of that stuff. Just leave it. Leave it where it is," he said. "I mean, maybe I’m biased because I’m a part of it, you know what I’m saying? I don’t want to see The Wire rebooted at all.

A hallmark of every Sundance Film Festival is the freezing temperatures, trudging through the snow and ice of Park City. But at the 2025 iteration of the festival, that bone-chilling weather has extended to the market, resulting in an unprecedented cold streak.
Six days in, only one film has been sold: Neon picked up the Alison Brie/Dave Franco body horror “Together” on Tuesday, following its rowdy debut Monday night at the Eccles.
“Together” generated the festival’s first real bidding war, as Neon ultimately won out over A24 and Mubi with a low eight-figure offer said to be north of $10 million. The buzz around the film, which stars and is produced by real-life married couple Franco and Brie, offered a brief reminder of the kind of heated market activity that used to be commonplace at Sundance.
But beyond that? Zilch. And it’s got the industry nervous.

Some Marvel fans might still be hoping for a miraculous announcement for Blade, but Ryan Coogler’s Sinners might just fill that void. The filmmaker jumps to his first original since his debut Fruitvale Station with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan in the upcoming horror film. The trailers have hinted at being a vampire film set in the Jim Crow era.
Coogler’s last film was MCU’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The filmmaker mentioned that Sinners was far from just a vampire film and was his most personal film yet. He also credited noted filmmaker Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for guiding him through filming on IMAX cameras.

Following an intriguing teaser, here’s a longer look at Ryan Coogler’s upcoming ‘genre fluid’ vampire flick Sinners, starring Michael B Jordan.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the landscape of cinema in 2025 but the return of Ryan Coogler to original filmmaking has to be close to the very top. While he might have created one of Marvel’s most enduring heroes in the form of Black Panther and sculpted events from the Rocky films into a fascinating new franchise in the form of Creed, we haven’t seen Coogler tell a completely original story since his 2013 debut, the utterly compelling Fruitvale Station.
That’s just one of the reasons why anticipation for the April release of Sinners is so high. Add in too the fact that it’s a vampire film that Coogler has described as ‘genre fluid’, that it features a double performance from the film’s star,...

The Black Panther film franchise remains the magnum opus of Ryan Coogler's acclaimed career. However, the filmmaker believes his next project, Sinners, "maybe more exciting" than his Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.
Via GamesRadar+, Coogler delved into his time making Sinners, the upcoming Warner Bros. horror flick led by Black Panther franchise star Michael B. Jordan. While the Oscar-winning Black Panther films made Coogler a household name, the director admits he had a more enjoyable experience making Sinners, mainly due to the cast he worked with throughout production and the uniqueness of the characters.

Ryan Coogler is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. He's the rare writer/director who actually managed to make the jump from doing small independent movies to tackling massive blockbuster franchises without losing his style. Quite the contrary, in an era where the pipeline of Sundance darling to pawn in a superhero or big franchise machine has all but ruined the future of many a once-promising filmmaker, Coogler gave us not one but two exciting creative-driven properties.
First, he revitalized the "Rocky" franchise with the phenomenal "Creed," one of the best movies of the century and a nuanced and thrilling exploration of nature and nurture, with boxing thrown in for good measure. Coogler's legacy sequel approach worked wonders, kickstarting a trilogy, allowing Sylvester Stallone to do his best work in the franchise, and making Michael B. Jordan a star.
Next, Coogler went even bigger with "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

It's been 12 years since Ryan Coogler made his startlingly assured feature filmmaking debut with "Fruitvale Station," but he still feels like an unknown quantity as an artist. We know from "Creed" and "Black Panther" that he's got a knack for imbuing franchise movies with uncommon heart, and no shortage of swagger when it comes to staging dynamite action set pieces. But due to circumstances beyond his control (the death of Chadwick Boseman and the Covid-19 pandemic), he's only made one movie over the last seven years. That's a lot of time for a still-young filmmaker (he's 38) to sit on the sidelines, especially one whose oeuvre is curiously light on original movies.
That's not a knock on Coogler at all. Christopher Nolan directed a remake ("Insomnia") and three Batman movies en route to becoming the most prominent and praised studio filmmaker on the planet, so Coogler is in excellent company. But...

A second trailer for Ryan Coogler’s fifth directorial feature film Sinners has arrived, and there is much to sink teeth into.
The horror film centers on Michael B. Jordan’s twins who return to their hometown to escape their troubled lives, only to realize that an even bigger threat lies in wait at home. Coogler hinted that vampires wouldn’t be “the only supernatural element” the film deals with. Coogler also opened up about how personal making the film was to him.

Ryan Coogler is one of the biggest and most respected filmmakers working today. From his breakthrough drama "Fruitvale Station" to making one of the biggest blockbusters of all time with Marvel's "Black Panther," the man truly doesn't miss. One common thread in his success has been Michael B. Jordan, who has collaborated with Coogler as a core star in front of the camera from the very beginning. This year, the two of them have reunited for "Sinners," an original, big-budget vampire flick being released by Warner Bros. Mainstream though the movie may be, Coogler decided to go big on the gore.

There are sinners, there are saints, and then there's that secret third thing that defies all labels entirely -- one that we're apparently supposed to play coy about when it comes to Ryan Coogler's upcoming original thriller, "Sinners." (Spoiler alert: It's vampires.) Starring Michael B. Jordan and, uh, Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Elijah and Elias Smoke in the Jim Crow-era American South, the film and its marketing have tried to hide the monsters at its heart. That's finally changing with the debut of a brand new and surprisingly lengthy trailer, which went online earlier today. The footage promises one of the year's most exciting experiences, but the main attraction just might be the fact that it's coming from the acclaimed director behind "Black Panther," "Creed," and "Fruitvale Station." Now, Coogler is opening up about the real-world history that influenced the making of the movie.

From Fruitvale Station to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ryan Coogler has established himself as one of the most vital voices in filmmaking over the past 12 years, and now he's stepping into the world of horror with his latest film, Sinners. Ahead of the movie's April 18th release in theaters, Warner Bros. revealed a new trailer for Sinners that sinks its teeth into visceral scares and unveils the vampiric side of its chilling and emotional story.

My maternal grandfather is from Mississippi. And my uncle James, who passed away while I was finishing up Creed, was also from Mississippi. And it was a place I had never been. My maternal grandfather passed before I was born.

Michael B. Jordan's venture into the supernatural takes an eerie turn with its latest preview. A new teaser for his upcoming vampire thriller, Sinners, features some intriguing and disturbing turns to get fans sinking their teeth into the action.
The Sinners teaser, which debuted during the 2025 AFC Championship Game between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, sees Jordan's twin characters, Elijah and Elias, confronted at a speakeasy by three bluegrass musicians, played by 28 Years Later's Jack O'Connell, Gone Girl's Lola Kirke and July Talk band member Peter Dreimanis. The bluegrass trio is "hungry like dogs" and then play a song which sounds sweet in melody, but soon sours the twins as they ponder whether the group is hungry for flesh. The rest of the teaser showcases a strange sequence of events that heavily hint at vampires being a major presence in the upcoming film.

In Barry Jenkins’ oneiric adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, Stephan James plays Fonny, an incarcerated sculptor wrongly accused of a crime. He enchants from the moment we see him on screen: When his character talks to his girlfriend (KiKi Layne) from behind a glass wall, James communicates the severity of carceral rupture with his anxiously clasped hands and melancholic gaze. The actor’s expressive eyes, often emphasized by furrowed brows, tell stories when words fail his character.
Language often fails Ricky, the protagonist of Rashad Frett’s meaningful but uneven feature debut. The 30-year-old Hartford native, portrayed with soulful precision by James, has just been released from prison. Life on the outside is a challenging obstacle course and Ricky, who was incarcerated at 15, understandably struggles to navigate it. He suffers from anxiety and Ptsd, as relayed through scenes of fitful sleep and muted sound as he enters states of agita.

A dozen years ago, at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, I sat in the Eccles Theatre and watched “Fruitvale” (later entitled “Fruitvale Station”), Ryan Coogler’s true-life drama about Oscar Grant, a young man who was fatally shot by Bay Area police, even though he had done nothing. By the time the film ended, everyone in the audience knew that we’d seen something straight-up extraordinary, and that Coogler was a born filmmaker. When he got up on stage, he was ebullient — grateful for the response, but you could also see, as his words poured forth, that he was already bursting with the stories he wanted to tell. This, for a viewer (or critic), is the Sundance dream: to go into a film you know nothing about, and two hours later you’ve witnessed a filmmaker — maybe a great one — being born.

Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler go together like eggs and bacon, peanut butter and jelly, or any other pairing that people won’t shut up about. The actor and filmmaker have long been in the business of collaborating and even have yet another project, Sinners, on the way. But, if you wanted to take things all the way back to the beginning of their beautiful friendship, you’d end up more than a decade in the past, settling in for 2013’s Fruitvale Station. The 94% Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes film served as Coogler’s feature-length directorial debut and further solidified Jordan's place in the spotlight. On February 1, everyone’s favorite free streaming platform, Tubi, will add the movie to its expansive collection, allowing audiences to see the two creatives become masters of their crafts.

The best Chad Michael Murray movies and TV shows include a mix of young adult releases, and in recent years, more adult drama fare. Murray got his start as an actor after he graduated from high school and won a modeling scholarship, which helped him pick up an agent. He moved to California and quickly earned a role in the MTV drama series Undressed. This helped lead to his breakout role on The Gilmore Girls as Tristin DuGray.
After another recurring role in Dawson’s Creek, Murray’s popularity exploded when he grabbed one of the leading roles in One Tree Hill. This also led to several film roles, mostly in young adult movies like Freaky Friday and A Cinderella Story. He hasn’t slowed down since aging out of many of those young adult releases, earning some great roles in movies like Fruitvale Station and TV shows like Marvel’s Agent Carter and Sullivan’s Crossing.

Get ready movie nerds and hold onto your seat because 2025 is about to bring a cinematic buffet we didn’t know we needed. Few days are left and we’re landing the territory of 2025 that will feature superheroes trying to outdo themselves (again), and yes, even a return to Pandora because James Cameron just can’t leave that blue magic alone.
Honestly, the 2025 movie lineup is stacked. Bong Joon Ho’s genius is making a comeback, Ryan Coogler is also cooking up something epic, and Paul Thomas Anderson? Probably crafting something so artsy it’ll make us feel smarter just for watching. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro is back to charm us once more with his spooky whimsy, and James Gunn is stepping into Superman territory (let’s just hope he doesn’t drop the kryptonite).

Honestly, the 2025 movie lineup is stacked. Bong Joon Ho’s genius is making a comeback, Ryan Coogler is also cooking up something epic, and Paul Thomas Anderson? Despite having been on track for release in early spring, Ryan Coogler's Sinners is finding itself being moved on Warner Bros.' calendar. The upcoming action-horror movie marks the fifth collaboration between Coogler and Emmy nominee Michael B. Jordan, going back to the filmmaker's directorial debut on Fruitvale Station. Jordan leads the Sinners cast as twin brothers Elijah and Elias in the mid-1900s who, upon returning to their hometown to escape their criminal lives, learn of an evil force lurking there.
Warner Bros. has revealed a number of major shifts in their upcoming release calendar, including Robert Pattinson's The Batman — Part II being pushed back by a year, and Tom Cruise and Alejandro Iñárritu's mystery movie taking its 2026 place. Included in the shift was the reveal that Coogler's Sinners is no longer set for a March 7, 2025 date, now set for April 18 the same year. The movie...

Moviegoers will have to wait a little longer to return to Gotham City, as Matt Reeves’ follow-up to “The Batman” has been pushed back until 2027. The superhero sequel was originally supposed to open on October 2, 2026, but will now shift a year and open on October 1, 2027, in Imax, Warner Bros. announced on Friday.
That left an opening for Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Tom Cruise’s upcoming film to hit theaters in 2026, just as the awards season race kicks off. The film, which still lacks a title, will open in Imax on Oct. 2 in the date “The Batman 2” vacated.
Warner Bros. made some additional tweaks to its upcoming release slate, swapping the openings of Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17” and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” Now, “Mickey 17,” which stars Robert Pattinson (who plays the Dark Knight in Reeves’ comic book series), will open on March 7, 2025, while “Sinners,” which re-teams Coogler...
