From winning MTV Roadies in 2004 to becoming one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, immense talent has fueled his rise. Starting his career as a radio jockey, Ayushmann quickly transitioned into television before making his Bollywood debut with Vicky Donor (2012). One of the more promising and consistent Indian filmmakers of this generation, Shoojit Sircar is most well-known for his steady, yet lightly feathered, bereft melodrama exploration of the human condition. Heavily leaning into the documentary style of storytelling, Sircar’s filmmaking is characterized heavily by unobtrusive use of the camera, hard cuts, and a vignette-heavy narrative that manages to encapsulate both the individualism as well as the collective nature of any political or historical event. It’s an extraordinary filmography, which is as remarkable as it is unassuming, simply because of the consistency of the quality of Shoojit Sircar’s movies.

Relatively weak in his filmography but no less impressive, “Yahaan” is also the first of two films where Sircar deals with a political conflict, albeit set as the backdrop rather than heavily foregrounded, and follows the story of a Hindu army officer, Captain Aman (Jimmy Shergill...

Bollywood A-list actor Ayushmann Khurrana scored another major hit in 2023 with comedy sequel “Dream Girl 2.” But he is still happy to have achieved what he describes as “validation.”
The film was one of several medium budget Hindi-language films that became box office successes, including “Omg 2,” “Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,” “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” “Satyaprem Ki Katha” and “12th Fail.” These effectively debunked the notion that only big budget spectacles like “Pathaan” or “Jawan” would work at the post-pandemic Bollywood box office, which had a poor 2022.
“There was a conspiracy theory, maybe a year back, that Indian audiences [were] only looking for spectacles or larger-than-life films, but this year, a lot of films, which not really big budget but mid budget, did really well,” Khurrana told Variety. ”Dream Girl 2′ did well, so did ‘Omg 2,’ and ‘Gadar 2’ was technically also a mid budget film. Khurrana stars as Karam, a young man in Mathura whom financial circumstances force to pose as a woman, Pooja, and the mayhem that ensues. The film, directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa and written by Shaandilyaa and Naresh Kathooria, is a follow up to 2019 film “Dream Girl,” which was one of the highest grossing films of the year.

Comedy drama ‘Dream Girl 2’ is a namesake sequel to the 2019 film ‘Dream Girl’, both directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa. Most of the cast remains the same except the leading lady is Ananya Panday instead of Nushrratt Bharuccha. Dream Girl 2 does not continue in terms of the story, it simply picks up the traits of Ayushmann Khurrana’s character Karamveer ‘Karam’ Singh aka Pooja.
Karam (Ayushmann Khurrana), a small-town boy from Mathura, plays female characters in plays (drama) as he has an uncanny ability of delivering sensuous female voice and look like one too. Like earlier he is still looking for a decent job, struggling every day to pay his father’s debt, who has borrowed money from almost everyone around.
While on one hand he is jobless, on the other hand, he is deeply in love with Pari (Ananya Panday), whose father (Manoj Joshi), though reluctant, agrees to their relationship but with a caveat.

These include playing a man who suffers from erectile dysfunction in “Shubh Mangal Savdhan” (2017); an alopecia sufferer in “Bala” (2019); an out and proud gay man in “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan” (2020) and a macho gym instructor who finds out that his fiancée used to be a man and has undergone gender reassignment surgery in “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui” (2021).
While these roles obviously fly in the face of traditional Bollywood macho stereotypes, Khurrana’s other role choices have also been unusual by the industry’s mainstream standards. These include playing a piano player who...

Spoiler Alert for those who have not seen the film “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.”
Bollywood A-lister Ayushmann Khurrana headlines the cast of transgender-themed romance “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui,” which is currently on release worldwide.
Across Indian cinema as a whole, trans characters have been portrayed sensitively as leads of films like “Daayra” (1996) “Tamanna” (1998), “Just Another Love Story” (2010), “Nanu Avanalla Avalu” (2015), “Njan Marykutty” (2018) and “Super Deluxe” (2019). However their representation in mainstream commercial Bollywood cinema veers between villainous characters, like Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s Maharani in “Sadak” (1991), and crude comedy parts. “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui” is unique in that it brings a trans character to the fore in Bollywood.
Khurrana plays Manvinder Munjal, a macho gym instructor in the northern Indian city of Chandigarh, who is smitten with Maanvi Brar, a Zumba teacher who shares his work space. They consummate their relationship and decide to get married when Maanvi reveals that she used to be a...

Shoojit Sircar’s films always have a certain charm of their own. Their distinctive subjects and idiosyncratic characters are a result of his writing companion- Juhi Chaturvedi, apart from his directorial decisions. What gave both of them such recognition was the 2012 release, “Vicky Donor”; which also won the National Award from that year. However, their collaborations have mostly dealt with people belonging to the middle-class from the social paradigm, who do not live in particularly grave financial conditions. Be it Piku, October, or Vicky Donor, the characters from their films were fairly privileged, largely sharing their emotional concerns. The characters in “Gulabo Sitabo”are hardly like that.
They need to hustle to fulfill their basic needs, which is what primarily interests in this new film. That is the first and foremost where the film becomes politically relevant, where the characters’ urgent needs and desires are more materialistic and less focused on their emotional being.

Actor Divyendu Sharma recently played a pivotal role in the digital film "Shukranu" that deals with the struggle of a man after sterilisation. The film, set against the backdrop of Emergency in 1975, makes the point that we need to stop practising toxic masculinity if we want to see a gender-neutral society.
"The definition of masculinity is changing, and I look at it as a positive change. With the kind of subjects that we are exploring in mainstream cinema, a dialogue has started. I mean, as a man I do not have to prove that I am a man and therefore I will not practice the age-old toxic masculinity. I am a man, I know it. I do not have to discriminate or belittle someone to prove, 'main hoon asli mard' (I am a real man). It never works," Divyendu told Ians.

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana is currently the audience's favourite imperfect hero on screen. He considers imperfect characters to be the most real and believes that the audience connects to such people instantly due to relatability.
"Our imperfections make us real and everyone connects to people and stories that are absolutely real, that they can easily relate to and are believable. People should be able to see the problems, the joys, the pain, the victories, the ambitions, the imperfections and say 'yes we are like this, we feel the same thing and we have lived the same life'. And this is what drives me to choose my films," Ayushmann said.

There's 'Vicky Donor', 'Badlapur', 'Kaabil' and Sarkaar, it did not do well but it will still be a special film because of Amitabh Bachchan, then 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' and now 'Bala'."
