The actress Juno Temple is good at many things, but one of them is not — and has never been — living in the real world. “I’m fucking really not good at reality,” she’d said on a recent Friday afternoon, while taking a turn or two around Tokio7, one of New York City’s most well-loved vintage shopping establishments, and picking up items that seemed to prove her point.
“That’s got some real good twinkle to it, right?” she asks, flittering to a display case that holds a denim...

No one will confuse "A Song Of Ice and Fire" with an old-fashioned fairy tale. George R. R. Martin, author of the still-incomplete epic, is not shy about admitting his influences, though, and classic fantasy is one of his greatest.
In "A Dance With Dragons," Quentyn Martell's doomed quest to marry Queen Daenerys Targaryen is compared with the tale of the Frog Prince (apparently a bedtime story in both Westeros and our world). This time, a princess' kiss does not make the frog into a romantic hero — Quentyn is kissed only by dragonfire. "The Frog Prince" was first told by the Brothers Grimm in the 1800s, but one can easily draw parallels to an earlier, even more famous French fable: "Beauty and the Beast."
In the 2012 "A Song of Ice and Fire" calendar, artist John Picacio drew 12 drawings of the series' most famous characters. For October, he picked Sansa Stark and Sandor Clegane/The Hound,...

Recently, Martin Scorsese shared a list of his top 39 must-watch foreign films. The list includes a note that the films are a "jump start" for film education. The long list includes some of the greatest films ever made, with many having helped change the landscape of cinema. It's hard to pick just 39, and Scorsese certainly saw something special in each film on his list.
Some of the reasons might seem obvious given that the films are considered legendary in their genre. For example, The 400 Blows kick-started the French New Wave, and films like The Rules of the Game were provocative at a sensitive time and received violent criticism. Films like Seven Samuri went on to inspire some of the most commercially successful films in recent years. There are also films that did neither. However, the reason why Scorsese chose them is worth pondering.

Aladdin was a groundbreaking film, but its outdated themes and portrayal of the Middle East have sparked controversy. The live-action adaptation pleased fans but fell short of the original, causing mixed reviews and a lack of lasting impact. Controversies over casting, Orientalist stereotypes, and offensive portrayals have tainted the legacy of Disney's Aladdin.
Aladdin was a huge success for Disney in 1992, but over three decades later, it's a bit tainted. Unlike previous Disney princess films, the movie-musical is centered on the male character Aladdin instead of the princess, Jasmine. It was also the first Disney princess film to feature a non-white prince and princess. Aladdin's release followed the success of Beauty and the Beast, continuing the Disney '90s renaissance.
Twenty-seven years after Aladdin's premiere, Disney released its live-action film adaptation, which saw Will Smith take on the iconic role of Aladdin's Genie. While it's impossible to recreate the animated film,...

This Star Trek: Discovery review contains spoilers.
Having fun isn’t hard if you’ve got a library card on the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery, which sees Captain Michael Burnham and company visit the Eternal Gallery and Archive, a mobile knowledge bank that is, hands down, the absolute coolest of the five locations we’ve visited on this season-long clue hunt. To be fair, “Labyrinths” isn’t an episode where all that much happens, but its premise still makes for a surprisingly satisfying hour, and the slow-moving approach of the Breen adds some nice tension to Michael’s vision quest into her own psyche.
Full of one-of-a-kind manuscripts, rare artifacts, and other priceless items from cultures both present and lost, the Archive is exactly the kind of location that fits the adventure-themed feel of the season. It also looks cool as hell, packed to the gills with books...

Josh Gad has built a massively successful career on-screen with standout roles in Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and more, but everything is about to come full circle, in his words, with his latest project - a Chris Farley biopic. Announced back in April with Paul Walter Hauser in the lead role, the film will mark Gad's directorial debut and immediately drew widespread attention for the love many still hold for the late Saturday Night Live star. It's set to explore the tragic journey of Farley, who quickly rose to become one of the sketch comedy's biggest stars before his tragic death at the age of 33. During an interview with Collider's Arezou Amin to talk about his Star Wars X Oreo collaboration, Gad lightly teased what to expect from his much-anticipated biopic, from the tone to what parts of Farley's story it would cover.

Traditionally, the concept of "the monster under the bed" is seen as a universal childhood fear, the most prominent example of our collective primal fear of the dark. For boys and young men, this mythical creature is typically seen as something to conquer, to stand up to. As fantasy, horror, and genre fiction continue to mutate into phases of postmodernism, this trope has expanded, where the monster isn't necessarily a threat to be subdued but rather a secret, special friend.
But what does this creature signify for girls and young women? If the horrific version represents the encroaching world of the patriarchy, might a cuddlier version see such a creature take the form of a confidant, companion, and protector? Where would he (assuming they're male) fit amongst the horror movie trope of survivor women being "paired" with their supernatural counterpart — is there something between "La Belle et la Bête" and...

The Criterion Collection restores cinema that holds cultural and historical importance, past and present. Popular classics like Caesar and Cleopatra, The Breakfast Club, and Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel are obvious, fan-favorite choices that have earned their place in the collection. Yet the Criterion Collection goes beyond the basics, too, and restores more off-the-wall films that would perhaps have been lost to time or obscurity.
Some films slip under the radar because their dark comedy doesn't reach a vast audience. Sometimes their quiet romances take time and investment from the viewer. But they're worth watching for their unique perspectives and cross-genre experimentation.

Beauty and the Beast has always been a romance. Written by French author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, many historians interpret the original story from the 1740s as a metaphor for arranged marriages. The titular beauty of La Belle et la Bête must look beyond physical pretenses and realize that the "monstrous-looking" man asking for her hand in marriage is actually a kind, honorable soul. Beauty falls in love with this so-called beast because of his personality; cue the quintessential happily ever after. Thanks to its motifs and thematic implications, La Belle et la Bête has seen no shortage of adaptations and reinventions across the centuries. Most of these modernized takes have centered the romance appropriately. However, only one boasts a leading man so sexy he shames all others practically out of existence. This swoon-worthy goldmine didn't emerge as a desperate marketing gimmick from a movie studio oligarchy — not even close.
